Andre 3000 “New Blue Sun” Review

On “?,” an underrated gem from Outkast’s Stankonia, Andre 3000 blazes through a relentless verse pondering on what makes humans do horrible things, either to others or themselves. Through the sounds of poured-out bottles towards the end, he seems to hint at his conclusion: alcohol. Excluding the Atlanta native’s latter half of Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, this is one of the very few songs to feature him without his partner Big Boi. On the rapper and flautist’s new album New Blue Sun, he’s asking a different question through a 90-minute ambient, new age, spiritual jazz album: What’s the next phase of his career? Instead of asking the world, Andre Benjamin asks himself and finds the answer from within. The result is a raw, imperfect, gorgeous, and deeply emotional statement of self-discovery.

One thing about New Blue Sun that anyone should be able to appreciate, regardless of their experience with new age, is the sonic craft behind it. Carlos Niño, who acts as producer, percussionist, and Andre 3000’s right-hand man in this album’s creation, brought a surprising aesthetic to the table. The production is heavy and dense despite the woodwinds leading us elsewhere. Bass elements are dark and cavernous and can add real evil to otherwise breezy soundscapes. Often, sharp static feedback, white noise, and hisses during the recording process give this record an earthy, grounded, and very raw feel. It all works together very seamlessly- and so do all the players, given the improvisational nature of these compositions which the production puts at center stage.

New Blue Sun‘s Production

In addition, the clicks of Andre 3000’s digital flute and other unwanted sounds as folks play their instruments occupy significant space in the mix. It adds to this feeling that you’re right there in the room with them — or rather, the mystical meadow and fantasy land that the music and the album’s title point to. The track “Ghandi, Dalai Lama, Your Lord & Savior J.C. / Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, And John Wayne Gacy” highlights Diego Gaeta’s gorgeous piano, while the closer “Dreams Once Buried Beneath the Dungeon Floor Slowly Sprout into Undying Gardens” is the most overt instance of ethereal guitar worship from Nate Mercereau’s playing.

That’s another thing: the production is so enveloping and dense that you can barely tell whether what you’re hearing is a guitar, flute, synth, or someone’s faint voice. Their intent to vary each song structurally when compared to the next is key to this album’s appeal. For example, for every improvisational linear and jazz-like moment, like the head melody and pondering movement of the opening track, “I swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time,” there’s a song of pure ambient and meditative worship, like the next song “The Slang Word P(*)ssy Rolls Off The Tongue With Far Better Ease Than The Proper Word Vagina . What Makes New Blue Sun Unique? What Hinders It?

This, plus its aforementioned density, sets New Blue Sun slightly apart from its influences. The tribal, primal, rhythmically patient, and tense hunter mind-state presented on “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther And Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control … Sh¥t Was Wild” is among this album’s most unique moments. But it’s difficult to identify those when talking about Andre 3000’s album holistically. Each track is a microcosm of the whole experience. Still, this versatility means that some moments will lean heavily enough into an ambient and meditative state that feels uneventful and disengaging. “Ninety Three ’Til Infinity and Beyoncé,” whose four-minute length feels like thirty seconds in the grand scheme of New Blue Sun, still makes an impact. The longer cuts, though, fall victim to their length and static stasis on occasion.

Also, the playing on New Blue Sun isn’t perfect, which is where it falters when compared to influences like Alice Coltrane, Laraaji, and others. In fact, it’s almost an ironic reality. Andre 3000’s flute, which he sometimes plays out of key and too meanderingly, might be the weakest aspect of this album’s composition and musicality. Even though space, meditation, and patience are key tenants of ambient music and spiritual jazz, sometimes this album stretches itself out a bit too thin with its adherence to that vibe. But don’t get it twisted: it’s still very expressive, serene, cohesive, and immersive. It just doesn’t hold up to other improvisational standards. Then again, Andre doesn’t know chords, notes, and music theory like that, which is totally fine.

What Did Andre 3000 Achieve Here?

For what it is, it stands as a great intro to this sound for casual music fans, not the next best thing in it. But what does it matter what a hip-hop writer says about an album that is so explicitly not hip-hop? Well, I’m going to invoke blasphemy and recall Drake’s Honestly Nevermind as a comparison point. The most important thing that album did, regardless of quality, was welcome an audience who might not have known how much they could like house music. So, Andre 3000’s New Blue Sun knows exactly what it’s doing. It ends up being a fitting tribute to these sounds from Steve Roach, Yoshio Ojima, Yusef Lateef, and more, rather than a distilled novelty.

All throughout New Blue Sun, there’s tension, and then release, which these inspirations are true masters at. Subtle key changes, futuristic effects, and melodic variations of each other’s structures do provide some respite for listeners looking for the fine details. As a background listen, it feels unrestrained and tender enough to focus on the bigger picture, so you can check Andre 3000’s album out either way. Just be cognizant of what you’re in for and take it at face value.

Even with little words, Andre 3000 still says a lot. New Blue Sun is deliberately peaceful, often somber, and sometimes chaotic with incredible swells on tracks like “BuyPoloDisorder’s Daughter Wears A 3000™ Shirt Embroidered.” Emotionally, the album covers everything under the sun with the same sense of passionate wonder. Take “Ants To You, Gods To Who ?,” for example, with its cold, dreamy atmosphere accentuated by a unique flute tone and melodic direction. It also represents the “She Lives In My Lap” artist’s own role amid all this. This isn’t really a solo album — in fact, none of his work truly is. But his skill and sensibilities shine through on everything he touches, and 3 Stacks is incredibly grateful for all the avenues that championed his artistic freedom, of which this is the latest.

New Blue Sun‘s closer’s title references the Dungeon Family, the first space in which the flautist felt fully free to express himself in his career. Back then, that mode of self-discovery was through rap, which he pondered intensely as he wrote verses. If Andre’s a rap architect, then this is him as a gardener, planting seeds and experiencing how they grow. Those can’t blossom without the company he chose, and that synergy is palpable on this album. In that humility and inspiration, he crafted one of the greatest artistic legacies of all time, in which New Blue Sun is a pivotal piece. There’s nothing more emblematic of Andre 3000, or compelling to him as a human, than the constant search for an answer. He found it, is finding it, and will always seek the way the wind blows him next time.

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards went down on Sunday (November 19), and had a lot of big winners. Taylor Swift and Morgan Gallen were among the most awarded musicians of the night, but what’s a top dog conversation without the 6 Dog- I mean, God? Moreover, Drake won a total of five BBMA trophies for the occasion, pointing to his excellent commercial run over the past few years. Specifically, these awards were Top Rap Album for his 21 S*vage collab Her Loss, Top Rap Song for the project’s opener “Rich Flex,” Top Rap Artist, Top Male Rap Artist, and Top Rap Touring Artist.

Furthermore, this caps off a pretty great 2023 for Drizzy, with the expanded version of his album For All The Dogs coming out just a few days ago as of writing this article. Sure, that promo cycle brought him his fair share of beefs, too. But what’s the industry without a little tussling, especially when you’re at such a high peak of success and polarization? Tyler, The Creator and everyone’s favorite Internet interview sleuth, Nardwuar, go way back- at least over twelve years, in fact. As such, it’s always heartening to see them link up, because few figures are so perfect for each other’s brand, passions, vibes, and humor. Moreover, the two linked up for their fifth interview at the rapper’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles. Backstage, they chopped it up about their history, the festival, Tyler’s influences, the gifts that The Human Serviette had for him, and so much more. We won’t spoil the whole thing for you, though; few music media treats are as wholesome and compelling as a Narduwar interview first-watch.

However, something from this interview that lit the Internet up was Tyler, The Creator’s comments on music journalism. “We’re at a point where a musician talking in detail about music and people are like ‘Why does he keep doing that?’” he remarked. “But if I was on here gossiping, people would feed into it. A few hours after these comments started to make rounds on social media, Tyler, The Creator clarified that he doesn’t hold any hard feelings for Hot Ones and wishes that he would’ve used a different example. After all, he agrees that shows like this are not the problem, and actually has other podcasts or programs that he actually dislikes. Overall, it seems like the Hawthorne native just wants more of a balance between deep conversation and some fun.

These artists have already had a prolific, very successful, and acclaimed 2023, but would they really be the amazing hip-hop figures we adore if they didn’t keep striking when the iron is hot? Moreover, The Alchemist, Curren$y, Boldy James, and Westside Gunn just dropped a remix to “No Yeast.” This cut appeared on Uncle Al and Spitta’s 2022 collab album Continuance, and featured the Detroit MC. However, this isn’t a question of just throwing a verse from the Griselda icon on here; each lyricist wrote a new verse for it. It would’ve been cool to see the producer switch up the beat a little bit, but with three brand-new sets of bars to sink our teeth into, how could we complain?

Furthermore, the instrumental here is a tender sample flip with gorgeous vocals, deep bass, and dreamy guitar lines, plus some ambient applause noise. The Alchemist dominates these soundscapes, and always knows how to keep up potent chemistry with the rappers he works with. In this case, this provides a warm bed for Boldy James, Curren$y, and Westside Gunn to come through with confident, emphatic, but still reflective and laidback verses. Well, Flygod still comes through with his trademark energy, charisma, and braggadocious attitude as the brand-new artist over this beat. Even when he switched to trap-inspired sounds on his 2023 album And Then You Pray For Me, he always showed why he’s so captivating as a mic presence and writer.

The Alchemist, Curren$y, Boldy James & Westside Gunn’s “No Yeast” Remix: Stream

Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2023 Recap: The Five Best Sets Of The Weekend

Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2023 is exactly as its father, Tyler, The Creator, explained during his set over this past weekend: the spirit of Los Angeles in two days. Dodger Stadium became a playground of approximately 56,000 music nerds’ on November 11 and 12, and was the Odd Future creative’s first edition of the concert and ride extravaganza since 2019, following a couple of years off due to COVID.

Now that it’s over, in all of its sun-drenched, expensive, passionate, grueling, talented, chaotic, diverse, and above all, fun glory, what was the best from CFG? And, is it worth attending next year? Tyler’s brainchild is up there with the best in the world when it comes to its hits and misses. The lines were eternal (especially for merch), pricing was quite steep, and there could’ve been fewer “fake fans” in attendance. Still, these definitely weren’t as bad as every other major fest. These issues haunt everything from the biggest of stages to the most humble multi-artist lineup. However, if you’re like me and you wouldn’t rather do anything else on a weekend, then you’re in luck.

I obviously didn’t get to see even close to the amount of acts I would’ve wanted. Some I caught the whole way, and others I saw from afar, making a line for some pork buns or on my way from one stage to another. I’m sure that Balming Tiger, d4vd, Liv.e, Domo Genesis, beabadoobee, Fuerza Regida, SPINALL, Khamari, DAISY WORLD, Toro y Moi, and many, many others put on amazing shows which I, unfortunately, couldn’t make it to. Below, we’ve ranked the top five sets we got to see, along with some honorable mentions.

The Hillbillies (Kendrick Lamar & Baby Keem)

Might as well start with the big dogs, right? There were plenty of huge names on the lineup this year in addition to those already mentioned. Lil Yachty brought out Offset, WILLOW performed with her brother Jaden Smith during her excellent sunset show, and The Hillbillies tapped Tyler, The Creator to join them onstage for their self-titled track’s performance. It’s fitting that we start here because the music video for Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem’s 2023 single launched this year’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival back in June. Now that we finally made it, it’s no surprise that they closed off Saturday expertly across 24 tracks and alternating sets with spoken-word interludes. It was another masterclass in crowd control, mood shifts, lyrical performance, and dedication. As such, The Hillbillies is this year’s standout experience from CFG’s top-tier mainstream performers. Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem showed everyone how it’s done.

For every few bangers, like their opener “family ties,” there was a cool-down moment like Kendrick’s “A.D.H.D.” and Keem’s “HONEST.” Their chemistry was evident, too, as they hyped each other up for their collaborative cuts and knew exactly how to play off of each other’s energy when they switched out onstage. Furthermore, this is what separated this performance from The Big Steppers tour, and showed another dimension to their already legendary reputation.

Kevin Abstract

Next up is Kevin Abstract, the former BROCKHAMPTON main brain who was one of many genre blenders this weekend. The ARIZONA BABY artist was also one of a few with brand-new projects to unveil in a concert setting. Sure, it wasn’t the sharpest or most fine-tuned, but it crystallized something more important beneath those fluorescent lights.

Kevin Abstract clearly cared a lot about his first solo performance in about six years. His performance, vocally and demeanor-wise, was very raw, grateful, unfiltered, and fully sunken into the vibes that he and his band created onstage. He played killer tracks like “Madonna” and “What Should I Do?” off of his new album Blanket and revisited fan favorites like “Baby Boy” and “Empty.” The cherry on top was that he revamped these tracks to fit his new, shoegaze-like style. While many artists played their hits or stuck to their most popular sounds, the 27-year-old fearlessly dove into a new era, and crafted a gear-shifting and deeply personal moment in his career for old and new listeners.

Kali Uchis

Kali Uchis is one of many artists on Camp Flog Gnaw’s lineup whose work with Tyler, The Creator is very beloved. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone on the bill who isn’t at least good friends with the Hawthorne native, and the Colombian-Virginian singer goes way back with T. With a great backing band, dancers, and impeccable stage design, she crafted one of the most visually stimulating sets of the weekend. Her blends of soul, R&B, and other genres were just as wavy as those from PinkPantheress, Syd, and of course, SZA.

Moreover, she performed many old and new hits: the dembow anthem “Muñekita,” “See You Again,” “telepatía,” “Blue,” etc. What’s more, is that the 29-year-old even brought out Omar Apollo for their collab “Worth The Wait,” and they seemed to really enjoy their time onstage, especially Omar. If there’s one thing that this set represents from this festival, it’s the confident and fitting stage presence that many of these artists embodied. No one did a better job of creating that illusion and grandeur than Kali Uchis. As you’ve probably already noticed, Camp Flog Gnaw is full of superstars with underground sensibilities and sounds. Part of their charm is how they stay down-to-earth within their styles, but Kali knows that she’s larger than life. Among massive fame and acclaimed artistry, she’s right at home.

BADBADNOTGOOD

Don’t let that name fool you: if you live under a dozen rocks and have never heard of this jazz group, they are anything but. Among a cavalcade of indie, R&B, hip-hop, and rock-adjacent artists, plus some Afrobeat and Latine representation, BBNG still stands as the most unique set of the weekend. Not many artists can pull off opening their set with “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath, going into ambient saxophone passages, and then coming through with a killer remix of their KAYTRANADA collab “Lavender” while still sounding cohesive as a unit. But BADBADNOTGOOD has been doing this for too long. They had perfect crowd control and a varied collection of jazz improvisation, psychedelic rock, Latin percussion, spacey soundscapes, amped and groovy drum solos, and some of their best compositions across their impeccable discography.

For day one fans, we didn’t get to hear their famous rap covers from back then, but we did get a gorgeous rendition of “Confessions.” On the other hand, we’d be remiss not to mention their incredible performance of “The Chocolate Conquistadors,” their MF DOOM collab. Drummer Alexander Sowinski and the rest of the band dedicated that cut to the late masked villain, and they also made sure that the crowd was having the best time of their lives. There were moments to gaze in awe at a solo, dance the night away, sing along to a melody, or take a moment to appreciate your place in the world right then and there. Music festivals can be overwhelming, especially CFG, but artists like BADBADNOTGOOD remind you of why it’s all worth it. No other set this weekend had me as completely immersed in the present as theirs.

redveil

Finally, we have the leader from Prince George’s County: redveil. He represents the amazing hip-hop on Camp Flog Gnaw’s bill: from Yachty to Earl, Domo to Ice Spice, Maxo to Maxo (Kream), The Hillbillies to Clipse to Paris Texas to AG Club… easily making up the most vocal and numerous fanbase here (although every other group felt just as welcome). Regardless of subgenre and labels, this festival had a lot of verses and moshpits, incredible crowd dynamics, and hungry MCs learning from the previous generation’s greatest. So why write this whole reflective and nostalgic intro for a 19-year-old, the freshest and youngest face here? Well, it’s because he’s the best proof that this weekend is not just Odd Future or Tyler’s festival: it’s the future’s festival.

Vibrant energy and fun moshpits from the crowd? Check. Unbridled hype, control, and stage presence from the learn 2 swim artist? Check. Sing-alongs, hardcore fans’ satisfaction, and new listeners falling in love with each song? Check, check, check. He ripped through all of his verses like “2daside,” thanked everyone who helped him along the way, kept his will, determination, and performance ethic at 100%, and put a spotlight on the world outside of CFG. Ice Spice continued to prove why she’s one of the most beloved artists right now despite a short set time, and Pusha T and No Malice reunited as the Clipse in the most legendary and triumphant set of the weekend… that I only got to see footage of. At the end of the day, everyone on the lineup deserves a mention. This festival really focused on consistency, quality, and a no-frills attitude throughout its 48 hours. It’s all a matter of your personal taste. SPINALL and Fuerza Regida gave global spotlights, while new names joined a lineup of veterans. Baby Keem even took some time to unveil the trailer for his Amazon Prime short film, The Melodic Blue, which will be released on December 5!

Alas, there’s still so much to say, and such little time. For example, Earl Sweatshirt’s discography-spanning set, plus some new unreleased gems, could warrant a breakdown of its own for how he hypnotized the crowd alongside special guests The Alchemist, Domo, and Zelooperz. No other festival has this level of intangible closeness between fan and performer, and its atmosphere invigorated the Dodger Stadium grounds in ways hard to explain.

Pressa Won’t Go Back To “Minimum Wage” On Hard-Hitting New Single: Stream

Toronto rapper Pressa is making sure that you won’t forget about his place in the game as we near the end of 2023. Moreover, he just came through with a new song and music video, “Minimum Wage,” and it chronicles his desire to never work for that again. Of course, this MC of Filipino and Jamaican heritage goes through the usual suspects: getting his money up in his career, being good with the ladies, but still remembering the harsh realities he came up in. Much like previous material, such as his May single “Unfollow Me,” this new track displays his penchant for effortless flows and a dangerously infections vocal tone.

Furthermore, “Minimum Wage” is quite the dramatic and picture-painting cut, whether that’s instrumentally or lyrically. With deep piano chords, atmospheric synth pads, a catchy little whistle melody, and busy percussion, the beat is dynamic enough to engage, but not stacked enough to distract. Pressa’s lyrics aren’t always introspective or deep, but the “Blame Me” artist still comes through with vivid descriptions. “You don’t know how it feel to be locked in the cage and run out of numbers to dial,” he raps at one point. Either way you slice it, the 27-year-old definitely knows how to put a lot of weight behind his material.

38 Spesh & Elcamino Team Up For Gritty New EP “Martyrs Prayer II”

As brief as EPs can be, sometimes they are truly the distilled and absolute best parts of an artistic link-up. Here to prove that are rapper Elcamino and rapper-producer 38 Spesh, who take up bar-spitting duties and behind-the-board responsibilities respectively on Martyrs Prayer II. Moreover, if you are a fan of Griselda, you’ve probably heard these names before; if you’re not but you love hip-hop of the Golden Age, you should check this out. It’s a concise, skillful, and often reflective and dense collection of six tracks, which equal all killer and no filler. Spesh’s production is dusty, nonetheless versatile, and punchy, whereas the They Spit On Jesus MC is a compelling and narratively talented spitter.

Furthermore, Martyrs Prayer II‘s title indicates a somber reflection on lives of crime and struggle, which is definitely reflected on a few bars and beats. Just look at the languid bass on “No Drums” or the wistful keys on “Streets Don’t Love Us” for indications of that, in addition to Elcamino’s wordplay and picture-painting. Of course, this chemistry between him and 38 Spesh is hardly a shocker, as they have collaborated on full-length projects to great success before. For example, there’s the 2020 record Sacred Psalms, plus many other one-off tracks.
