2Pac’s brother, Mopreme Shakur, has responded to Keefe D’s arrest and the theory that Diddy may have been involved in the killing of the legendary rapper. Addressing the situation on The Comedy Hype News Show on Monday, Shakur admitted that it feels like his brother is “being vindicated.”

“I don’t have to do anything. This individual [Keefe D] mentioned [Diddy’s] name. Law enforcement has a job to do. Will they do it? It does feel like Pac is being vindicated because back in them days when things were going down everybody thought he was crazy,” Shakur said. “He may have not expressed it properly but that don’t mean he was wrong. Ya dig? So we’ll see.”

That’s why the R&B darling was probably as shocked as anyone else when a lawsuit was filed against Lizzo earlier this year with damning allegations of workplace misconduct and harassment against the singer. The “About Damn Time” singer and her team were accused of bullying dancers for their weight and race and in one now notorious incident forcing the entire team through a grueling re-audition.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, SZA talked about all kinds of different things. One thing she didn’t want to address directly were the legal issues that Lizzo was facing, but she did comment on the singer herself. “I’m just saying, based on the values and the energy that I see in my friend, I just really think that she’s a beautiful person,” she began. It’s not a surprise to hear as many fellow performers like Beyonce and Grimes have also spoken positively about the singer’s attitude since the allegations emerged. “I just really pray that everybody recovers from this because everybody deserves to heal and feel safe and feel loved,” SZA continues. Thanks to the end of the WGA strike, late-night TV is back — and with it comes the return of musical guests to shows like The Tonight Show, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Of course, with the strike not so far in the rearview — and the SAG-AFTRA strike still ongoing — a music fan might wonder if any of the musicians’ unions has ever gone on strike, or ever will. Since there are two unions for musicians, the answer might not be as simple as you’d expect.

Has The Musicians Union Ever Gone On Strike?

As American Federation of Musicians, the union representing professional instrumental musicians in the United States and Canada, there is one strike on record: the 1942–44 musicians’ strike. This strike was predicated by disagreements over royalty payments with the major record labels. While musicians refused to record in sessions, they were still allowed to play live, allowing them to remain on strike for over two years, with the labels Decca Records, Capitol Records, RCA Victor, and Columbia eventually capitulating to the AFM’s demands. This strike in part helped cause the move away from big bands and the rise of vocalists.

Meanwhile, musicians covered under SAG-AFTRA’s music division have naturally gone on strike a number of times with the rest of their guild, including strikes in 1980, 2000, and the one currently taking place. In 1980, SAG (then a separate entity from AFTRA, which also struck in solidarity) boycotted the primetime Emmys, increasing minimum salaries and royalties for movies made for premium TV. In 2000, actors refused to appear in commercials, although many non-union actors scabbed for advertisers during that strike.

The current strike finds the guild negotiating for royalties from streaming and on limitations on the use of AI to reproduce their work. Given recent applications of the technology to music as well, one could imagine that this could also benefit musicians within the guild (and highlights the need for solo vocalists and smaller bands to start looking into forming their own union).

Jay Rock Is Taking Control Of His Life On New “Ambition (Freestyle)”

One of the first members of TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment), Jay Rock, has remained fairly dormant over the past five years or so. The last full-length offering we heard from him was his 2018 record, Redemption. You had solid tracks on there. From “The Bloodiest,” “OSOM” with J. Cole, to “Wow Freestyle” with Kendrick Lamar, there was plenty of quality to be heard. Since then, though, Rock has put on some loose collaborations and singles. However, we did hear some rumblings that the West Coast artist would be dropping a new project soon.

We do not know any dates yet, but the album is expected to be called Eastside Johnny. Rock might have given us two lead singles from this LP earlier this year. The fun hit “Too Fast (Pull Over)” with Latto and Anderson .Paak, with production from Mustard, was released in July. Then, before that, was “Eastside” with Kal Banx. Now, we could possibly be hearing the third track with “Ambition (Freestyle).”

The song is only about a minute and a half long but Rock makes the most of the short runtime. He spits very aggressively and with urgency. Kodak Black has disagreed with Boosie Badazz’s comments on Tory Lanez’s 10-year prison sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. The Baton Rouge rapper had described it as a good deal and not that much time behind bars. “That’s a long ass time,” Kodak said in a clip circulating on social media, disagreeing with Boosie.

As for Boosie’s full comments, he said after the sentencing: “I think he came out good, bro, I don’t know how California work. I think he’ll only do five, that’s state time. S**t, in Louisiana? That n**ga would’ve did 40. A crime on a woman? Highly televised? 40, n**ga. No cap, n**ga. That n**ga would’ve got 40. I got 10 for third-offense marijuana, n**ga. Straight to Angola, n**ga.
