Today In Hip Hop History: Common Released His ‘Resurrection’ Album 29 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 10 04 at 9.49.11 AM

On this day in Hip Hop history Chicago legend, Common, released his sophomore LP Resurrection. Produced completely by No I.D., this album was a fitting follow up to Common’s debut Can I Borrow A Dollar.

Structurally, the album was split down the middle into two sections. The first half was the “East Side of Stony” and the second half was the “West Side of Stony”. Stony Island Avenue is a street that run’s through the South Side of Chicago, where Common grew up. Throughout the album, Common continued to relate his themes and lyrics to himself, his past, and his surroundings in Chicago creating a very introspective experience.

This album also features one of Common’s most controversial singles “I Used to Love H.E.R.”. As Resurrection‘s lead single, “I Used to Love H.E.R.” was an ode to golden era Hip Hop. The song in it’s entirety is a metaphor in which Common relates Hip Hop to a girl who loses her innocence after being enticed by the materialistic side of life. The acronym “H.E.R” actually stood for “Hip Hop in its essence is real”. In the song, Common explains how Hip Hop culture is being destroyed by gangsta rap culture (which was centered around violence, materialism, and misogyny according to him). This opinion of course upset the West Coast, especially rap legend Ice Cube, who felt it was a personal attack on his brand of music. He in turn responded with the single “Westside Slaughterhouse” featuring Westside Connection.

Commercially, the album was a marginal hit peaking at #179 on the Billboard 200. It showed a growth in sales from his debut and prompted the success of the coming album, one Day It’ll All Make Sense.

Is Childish Gambino Retiring?

Donald Glover has faced recent rumors that his time in music as Childish Gambino is over. Over the past few years, Glover has focused more on television, with his work on shows like Atlanta and Swarm.

In 2017, he had also said that he would retire his stage name after his next album. The record then dropped in 2020, and he changed his mind.

Because of this, fans have stuff on the way to still look forward to — as he discussed his future as Gambino in a new interview with Complex.

“I feel like it’ll be clear sooner rather than later,” Glover shared. “It’d be better for people to just tune in, I suppose. But I’m trying harder to not be cryptic. Tyler [The Creator] is always, like, ‘You’re so cryptic.’ But I’m like, ‘I’m really not.’ I just like suspense, I guess. I think it makes stuff better. But that’s just me.”

He also referenced Cam’ron as a relatable figure, with the two both continuing with music because they’re nice, not for the money. “I don’t think I’d ever stop, because of like…” he added. “I always liked it because I liked it. I never did it because it was like, man, this is a good way to get put on or something. I like the feeling of it. I do this because I’m nice. In a certain way, I think that makes me old school.”

Back in January, he also confirmed to E! News at the Golden Globes that he was in the studio working on new music.

Here’s hoping we get to see what Glover has planned for his Childish Gambino project soon.

Kai Cenat Does Not Approve Of GloRilla’s New Song: Watch

Kai Cenat’s streams have only continued to gain more and more popularity over the course of the past year. The 21-year-old from New York has had some incredible moments in his young career. He has been able to meet some of the biggest rappers and social media personalities and it is truly incredible. Cenat’s net worth is hovering around $9 million to $12 million, which not many young adults can say they have at this point in their lives. Over the past couple of weeks, he has been getting his fans ready for big-time collaborations.

In the latter half of September Kai hinted that a stream with him and Travis Scott could be on the way. Apparently, the two met and bonded and there is a decent possibility of this happening. Kai also reacted to UTOPIA and Travis shouted him out on his IG story a few months ago. In addition, Drake could also be another featured guest. The streamer disclosed some of their conversations after the met. “He’s saying, ‘bro, I want to pull up to the crib. We gotta get a stream in,” Cenat said. As we mentioned, Kai also likes reacting to music on his channel, and it another reason why his success has grown.

One of his most recent listens was a new GloRilla and Fivio Foreign track, “Cha Cha Cha.” The song blends a few different samples. One includes the beat from J. Cole’s “Album of the Year (Freestyle).” GloRilla then does an interpolation of the classic dance track “Cha-Cha Slide” from the late legend, Mr C The Slide Man. On top of that, the beat also includes elements of drill due to Fivio’s inclusion. Kai was not digging the sound. In disappointment, he said, “I love Glo bro. I love Glo but no.” Did you have the same feelings as Cenat?

What are your initial thoughts on Kai Cenat’s reaction to GlorRilla and Fivio Foreign’s new song “Cha Cha Cha?” Do you agree or disagree with the streamer’s take on the track? Is Kai the best live streamer right now? We want to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Travis Kelce Asks NFL To Ease Up On Taylor Swift Content

It seems that Travis Kelce is over the amount of focus the NFL has put on his new relationship. “I think it’s fun when they show who all is at the game. I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you’re watching. But at the same time, I think they’re overdoing it a little bit for sure. Especially my situation.” With Swift watching the Chiefs beat the Jets in person, cuts to Swift were frequent. Some fans complained that Swift’s reaction was being prioritized over the action on the field. One notable example was when the broadcast cut away from an Isaiah Pacheco touchdown celebration to get Swift’ reaction.

Elsewhere, the NFL changed several of its social media bios to reference Swift and has posted a bunch of memes and content about the singer. It’s understandable why Kelce, who asked for privacy after the couple became official, may feel a little overwhelmed by all the attention. Swift attended Chiefs-Jets with an a-list cast of Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman.

Kelce “Smitten” With Swift

Meanwhile, Kelce is reportedly “completely smitten” with Swift and the pair “talks every day”. Furthermore, “Taylor’s really enjoying getting to know Travis. They’re taking it day by day, but she has high hopes. [She] likes [that Travis is] a normal, nice guy [who’s] down-to-earth, not affected by fame, and so hot. Taylor has decided she’s not going to hide anymore. She’s going to be her authentic self and enjoy life,” a source told Us Weekly.

Swift is expected to attend the next Chiefs game this weekend, another road game up in Minnesota. However, while the Vikings are excited to have Swift in attendance, they don’t plan on going easy on Kelce. “Oh man, the social media is going crazy. And I’m not hating against it. That’s the world we’re living in. Is she going to come to this game? We’re locked in, but that would be something. I’ve been watching her since I was a kid. That would be cool, for sure. Not for him, because we’re going to try to get our hands on him in front of her,” cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. told reporters. Furthermore, Murphy Jr. promised some Swift-related trash talk to “get him [Kelce] going”.

Suge Knight “To Blame” For 2Pac‘s Murder Case Stalling, Retired LAPD Detective Claims

Suge Knight is the one “to blame” for the lack of progress made in 2Pac’s murder investigation, says retired Los Angeles Police Department detective Greg Kading. Kading previously led an interagency task force looking into the murder of The Notorious B.I.G. He also authored the book, Murder Rap: The Untold Story of the Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations, in 2011. Speaking with Rolling Stone on Tuesday, Kading explained how Knight’s lack of cooperation hindered the case.

“If there’s anybody in the world to blame for this taking 27 years to solve, it’s Suge Knight,” he told the outlet. “He knew the moment it happened who did it. And all Suge had to do when Las Vegas [PD] asked him to come in and sit down for an interview, all he had to do was say, ‘They pulled up alongside, I looked right across the car, I saw Keefe D in the front seat.’”

Las Vegas Police Share Image Of Suge Knight & 2Pac After Arrest Of Keefe D

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – SEPTEMBER 29: An image on a television monitor shows a photo of Tupac Shakur (L) and Marion “Suge” Knight Jr. in a car in Las Vegas the night Shakur was killed as (L-R) Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson hold a news conference at the LVMPD headquarters on the arrest and indictment of Duane “Keefe D” Davis for the 1996 murder of Shakur on September 29, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. A Nevada grand jury indicted Davis on one count of murder with a deadly weapon in the fatal drive-by shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

He added: “That’s all he had to say: ‘I saw Keefe D.’ That alone, that witness statement would’ve changed everything. There’s nobody else who could have helped more than him, and he didn’t, because evidently, his reputation was more important than 2Pac’s life.”

The comments come after Knight recently admitted that he doesn’t plan on testifying in the arrest of Keefe D. Las Vegas police arrested the former gang member in connection to the killing, last week. Speaking with TMZ, Knight explained: “I wouldn’t be. Well, number one, I’m not gonna get on the stand and testify on somebody for what? […] I wouldn’t go, I wouldn’t testify. None of that shit.” Be on the lookout for further updates on the investigation into 2Pac’s death on HotNewHipHop.

Cam’ron “Embarrassed” After Mase Ditched Colorado For USC At Halftime

Cam’ron called out his It Is What It Is co-host Ma$e for his antics in Boulder this past weekend. The pair rolled up to support Deion Sanders and Colorado. However, Ma$e ditched the Buffs for the Trojans as they entered halftime with USC leading 34-14. Ma$e went as far as to post a video of himself dancing to “Who Let the Dogs Out” on USC’s sideline.

“How da fuck he get on their sideline?! N-gga Betha talking bout ‘USC adopted him’ in his caption. I told n-ggas had everything laid out for you. You had your own suite ready, they had the car service ready for you, catering, and once n-ggas start losing. How the fuck you get on the USC sideline? … You embarrassed me, man… People seen that it was a little embarrassing for me, man.” Ma$e tried to defend himself, saying he was off getting Smashburger when he was simply swept up by the USC crowd.

Cam’ron Sticks With Colorado Through Failed Comeback

While Ma$e may have ditched the Buffs at halftime, that’s when the game actually got interesting. Trailing 34-14, a completely different Buffs team took the field in the third quarter. The Buffs outscored the Trojans 27-14 in the second half and were an onside kick recovery away from at least forcing overtime. However, USC recovered the kick and killed the clock to hang on for a 48-41 victory. If they had been successful, the 27-point comeback would have been the largest in school history. That record is held by the Buffs’ 20-point comeback against Missouri in 1978.

The loss dropped Colorado to 3-2 on the season and made their all-time record against the Trojans a dismal 0-17. Shedeur Sanders had 371 yards, four touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, receiver Omarion Miller had 196 yards and a score. However, the defense was absolutely torched through the air by USC. Caleb Williams had six passing touchdowns, with two going to former Buffs receiver Brendan Rice. Next week, the Buffs travel to 1-4 Arizona State.

Destroy Lonely Pop-Up Devolves Into Chaos, Police Put An End To It

Destroy Lonely has been enjoying quite a bit of success as of late. For those who may not know, he is signed to Playboi Carti’s Opium label. The man has delivered some huge viral hits, including the “If Looks Could Kill.” Overall, his album of the same name was an ambitious undertaking with 26 tracks. Now, however, he is looking toward the next stage of his career, where he hopes to become just as famous as his mentor Carti.

Recently, Lonely dropped the “Director’s Cut” to his album, If Looks Could Kill. Fans were very happy with the project, and they have been looking to support him, in any way they can. Consequently, the artist decided to hold a pop-up in Fairfax on Tuesday. This was going to be a gather of fans where Destroy Lonely could talk to those who listen to his music. Unfortunately, the entire event devolved into chaos and the police had to come and call the whole thing off.

Destroy Lonely Chased By Fans

As LA Weekly reports, the event ended up starting two hours later than expected. Consequently, fans were not happy and they started behaving as such. When things got too wild, the police came and it led to a disappointing end for the event. There is some footage of the artist being chased by fans, who simply wanted a glimpse at the rapper. It wasn’t the pop-up that Lonely had planned, which is most certainly unfortunate. Hopefully, he can plan a different kind of event, in the not-so-distant future.

Moving forward, Destroy Lonely is going to be a huge name to watch in hip-hop. He has the potential to become more mainstream, and fans are excited to see what he does next.
