“The Simpsons” Showrunner On Prediction Of Russia-Ukraine Conflict: “Very Sad To Say This Was Not Hard To Predict”

The Simpsons has been praised for its ability to seemingly predict the future in the past, but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Al Jean admitted that a resurfaced clip of the animated series from back in 1998 that’s lining up with current world events has left him feeling “very sad.”

“In terms of predictions, there are two kinds we have: The trivial, like Don Mattingly getting in trouble for his hair in ‘Homer at the Bat,’ and then there are predictions like this,” the 61-year-old animator explained, speaking specifically about the “Simpson Tide” episode, in which Homer unintentionally fires the captain of a nuclear submarine out of the vessel and into Russian waters.

Later in the show, we see Russia revealing that the Soviet Union “never truly dissolved” as tanks and troops take over the streets and the Berlin Wall finds itself being rebuilt. “I hate to say it, but I was born in 1961, so 30 years of my life were lived with the spectre of the Soviet Union. So, to me, this is sadly more the norm than it is a prediction. We just figured things were going to go bad,” Jean went on.

“Historical aggression never really goes away, and you have to be super vigilant,” the Michigan-born father of two told THR. “In 1998, when this clip aired, it was maybe the zenith of U.S.-Russia relations. But ever since [Russian President Vladimir] Putin got in, almost everybody has made it clear that he’s a bad guy and bad things are going to happen.”

CNN reports that, as of Friday morning, an increasing number of countries have been responded to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, implementing sanctions against the Putin-led country as it moves in on the capital of Kyiv.

“There is the kind of prediction, where we reference something that has happened, happening again — we hope it wouldn’t, but sadly, it does,” Jean shared, mentioning that viewers probably won’t see a specific Russia-Ukraine reference, but the series will “likely address how the world is changing.”

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky Step Out to Gucci Fashion Show

The fashion killas strike again.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made a surprise appearance at the Gucci autumn/winter 2022 show during Milan Fashion Week on Friday (Feb. 25).

The pregnant singer was glowing as she showed off her maternity style in a black latex crop top that revealed her baby bump, along with dragon-print pants, a lavender fur coat, and mirrored headdress. Rocky also brought his “jiggy” style in yellow Gucci x adidas gloves while holding a Gucci suitcase.

All eyes were on the fashionable couple as they entered hand in hand before grabbing a seat in the front row at Alessandro Michele’s runway show.

Rihanna opened up her approach to maternity dressing in a recent interview. “I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I could, and fashion is one of my favorite things, so redefining what it even means to be pregnant and maternal,” the fashion icon told “ET.” “It can get uncomfortable at times so you can dress the part and pretend.”

And just because she’s pregnant, that doesn’t mean she’s putting a hold on her music career. “You’re still gonna get music from me,” she teased.

Bow Wow Plans To Release His Final Album On The Snoop Dogg-Owned Death Row Records

Bow Wow has been talking about releasing his final album for a long time now, but today, we at least found out part of his plans for its release. Now that Snoop Dogg has retained ownership of the legendary Death Row Records, Bow Wow, whose name was actually inspired by Snoop, his onetime mentor, wants to put out his swan song with the rapper who helped him start his rap career almost 30 years ago.

Bow Wow, who loves to participate in Twitter Q&A sessions (even though the app’s users haven’t always been so kind to him), revealed his plans when a fan asked him, “When you getting back in with uncle Snoop?” The younger rapper replied, “Spoke to snoop last week. Very soon. My plan is to put my final album on death row and close my music career out where it began.” He also compared himself to the recently retired future NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade. “Im tryna do the d wade and come home and close it out.” D Wade famously finished his illustrious NBA career in Miami, where he was drafted, after leaving to play for his hometown Chicago Bulls and reunite with LeBron James in Cleveland.

Over the years, Bow Wow has taken a lot of flak for some of his antics on social media, but he’s also recently begun to receive an increased acknowledgment from his peers and successors such as Drake, who said, “If it wasn’t for you, there wouldn’t be no me,” as well as Soulja Boy, who he joined for a raucous edition of the Verzuz battle series.

Wireless Festival Has Been Expanded To Three Venues With Dave, Cardi B, And J. Cole Headlining

The UK’s Wireless Festival has announced its headliners for 2022, as well as a big change to the festival format. After being held at a single location since 2015, the festival has once again expanded to multiple venues this year, taking place at two of its old locations, Finsbury Park and Crystal Palace Park, as well as the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham.

Fittingly, the roster of headliners has also expanded to include an impressive collection of mostly US-based acts, which include ASAP Rocky, J. Cole, and Tyler The Creator at Crystal Palace Park on July 1-3, then Cardi B, SZA, and Nicki Minaj at Finsbury Park from July 8-10. On that same weekend, BRIT AWards winner Dave, Cardi B, and J. Cole will be the headliners at the NEC.

Local headliner Dave is coming off a strong 2021 that saw him release his sophomore album We’re All Alone In This Together. Dave was nominated for — and won — the Best Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Act award at this year’s BRITS, where he performed “In The Fire” from his new album complete with a flamethrowing guitar. His selection as a Wireless headliner signals his leap from emerging artist to bonafide superstar.

No other acts have been announced as yet, but you can find more information on the Wireless Festival website.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
