Meek Mill Reminds Us He Used To Pray For “Times Like This” On “HEATHENISM” EP

Rather than letting the gossip circulating about him and Diddy in the news get him down, Meek Mill is capitalizing on his moment in the spotlight. He’s not bothering himself with allegations in a recent lawsuit about allegedly being sexually intimate with Sean Combs (who was linked to Usher and Stevie J in the same documents). Instead, the Philadelphia native wants to keep all ears on his lyrical abilities, which he proudly shows off on today’s (February 29) HEATHENISM EP.

The five-track effort includes two collaborations, “Whatever I Want” alongside Fivio Foreign and “Giving Chanel” with Future. Meek handles the other three titles by himself with total confidence, and for our music panel, we’re highlighting his bars on “Times Like This.” Over production by OthelloBeats and Gabe Lucas, the Dream Chaser reflects on how much life has changed for him since first coming up in the rap game.

Meek Mill Remains Focused On Music Amid Diddy Rumours

“I’m on the chopper, me and Rubin, and I’m exactly where I belong / Came up trappin’ out the phone, these ni**as weren’t happy I was home,” he spits prior to a “Dreams & Nightmares” shoutout. “You ever make a bad decision? Ni**as happy that you wrong? / I used to pray for times like this, you can’t even imagine what I be on, ni**a.”

Before showing us how he’s moving in 2024, Meek Mill closed out 2023 with a collaborative album in tandem with Rick Ross. Too Good To Be True remains in rotation for many hip-hop heads since arriving last November, but if you haven’t tuned in already, you can do so at the link below. Make sure to check back in with HNHH this weekend for more of our new music recommendations.

Drake Gave Us A Worldwide Bop And Lyrical Banger On “Scary Hours” EP

Drake is one of the few artists who can have a song blow up without much notice or rollout. He was able to pull that off six years ago (January 19) with his two-pack EP, Scary Hours. It began the running theme within Drizzy’s catalog that has now produced a follow-up and is the title for the For All The Dogs extended version. As we mentioned, the first Scary Hours possessed one of Drake’s biggest songs ever, that is “God’s Plan.”

It took over the internet and it was his first single since “Signs” about a year prior in 2017. Joining the global phenomenon was the more lyrically-heavy “Diplomatic Immunity.” While “God’s Plan” is more of a triumphant and thankful cut about how far he’s come amidst adversity, the latter flexes a more braggadocious Drake. “‘Cause n****s started talkin’ to me like I’m slowin’ down / Opinions over statistics, of course / Gassed off journalistic / Come at me and all you’ll get is the ballistic report.”

But, when you can stack hits like Drake, that is going to happen. While a good amount of people have grown tired of the track for its constant radio and playlist attention, you have to admit he knows how to pen an earworm. Do not lie you still repeat those lyrics below here and there. Even all these years later, the song is still in his top 10 on Spotify with over 2.4 billion streams. Its accompanying iconic visuals have racked up an astounding 73 million views.

What were your thoughts on Drake’s EP Scary Hours when it dropped six years ago? Out of “God’s Plan” and ‘Diplomatic Immunity” which one was your favorite at the time? Quotable Lyrics From “God’s Plan”:

She say, “Do you love me?” I tell her, “Only partly
I only love my bed and my mama, I’m sorry”
Fifty Dub, I even got it tatted on me
Eighty-one, they’ll bring the crashers to the party
And you know me
Turn the O2 into the O3, dog

Blueface Drops New EP After Arrest

Blueface’s recent arrest for apparent parole violations is still pretty unclear, but folks are reacting to so many different angles for it. For example, there’s his baby mamas’ reactions, his mother’s reaction, his manager, and a whole slew of other pop culture happenings he was involved in that now seemingly took a long pause. However, it’s clear that the California rapper’s set on profiting off of this as much as he can, and what better way to do so than some music? Moreover, he just dropped the Free Blueface EP, a seven-track, 16-minute offering of West Coast jams and more traditional trap cuts.

Furthermore, features include DDG and Kevin Gates, plus Tru Carr and YungMagnificent. As far as its quality, Blueface is really doing the same thing he’s always done here, so if you’ve liked him before, you might find something to enjoy. Of course, as of late, he had dedicated himself more to pushing his own artists (mainly his baby mamas) rather than developing his own musical career. One of these is Jaidyn Alexis, who is currently beefing with the 26-year-old’s mother Karlissa Saffold once again thanks to this arrest.

Free Blueface EP: Stream

In other news, it seems like his reality TV show is still happening despite this recent arrest, as Zeus Network still rolled out Rap Queens West. The “BDD” MC will accept auditions from various female rappers, and we know how that went for him in the past. Regardless, the winner will receive a whopping $1 million payout, plus a deal with MILF Music courtesy of Zeus and the label. He’s still looking for his next talent, even if the Free Blueface suggests that his own artistic days are likely mostly behind him.

Meanwhile, Chrisean Rock’s reaction to this arrest caused many fans to beg for her to avoid him. Apparently, she suggested some saddened emotions when she found out, which viewers hope won’t turn into a reconciliation. With jail time and the overall legal situation still up in the air, we can’t really make any solid bets yet. On that note, stay logged into HNHH for the latest news and updates on Blueface.

Nicki Minaj Says Dropping An EP Before “Pink Friday 2” Is A “Great Idea”

After playing several snippets of unreleased songs on Instagram Live, Nicki Minaj admitted that dropping them as an EP prior to the release of her next album, Pink Friday 2, is a “great idea.” She’ll be releasing the project as her fifth studio album on December 8. Minaj considered the idea of an EP on Twitter, on Saturday.

“I think an EP with these songs is actually a great idea @RepublicRecords,” she wrote in one post. In another post, she also revealed that one of the unreleased tracks “was gonna be” her first single, “but I was heavily preggers and didn’t feel comfortable. Then there’s a song called ‘Memories’ that would’ve been the second single. Lol. So glad I waited. The album really turned out perfect.”

Ransom & Nicholas Craven’s “Deleted Scenes 2” EP Review

Ransom and Nicholas Craven’s Deleted Scenes 2 is an EP with track titles sharing their name with movie titles. No samples from the respective movies appear on the songs on this project. However, a snippet from The Shining’s opening scene with the character Jack Torrance does play at the end of the opening track, “American Made.” In this project, Ransom combines creative bars with motivational truths from his own life. He drops punchlines and references with ease, never forcing the listener to dwell on them long because he’s already moved on to the next one. Lyrics like, “Look, they ain’t support your flight, shouldn’t mean they stop you from soaring,” combine motivational advice with creative imagery. Less complex but equally effective bars like, “You struggle for pennies and still you won’t change,” frequently appear, too. Ransom’s direct delivery ensures their efficiency.

Nicholas Craven’s Production Falls Short

In Deleted Scenes 2, Ransom’s verses blend well with all of Nicholas Craven’s production. However, the display is somewhat formulaic and sticks out because of the short length of the project. Every beat is either a pitched up or down soul sample loop. This method is part of Nicholas Craven’s signature style but can get repetitious here. The loop on “American Made” mirrors Ransom’s lyrics which was an effective creative decision. “Arrival” offers some pleasant strings and piano keys, while “Homefront” has a dusty guitar loop. However, Craven’s production doesn’t have the same impact as it has had on other projects. His ability to find, chop, and loop the samples is still commendable, but it is not quite as dynamic as expected on this. It’s not bad – but he has done better.

Ransom & Nicholas Craven Are Underground Staples

Deleted Scenes 2 brings two popular names in the underground together. Nicholas Craven is a producer from Canada. He’s known for his work with underground artists such as Tha God Fahim, Boldy James, Mach-Hommy, and, of course, Ransom. He’s also done several songs with fellow Canadian artist CHUNG. Craven creates ominous, elegant, or smooth soundscapes – and everything in between – for the artists he works with. Meanwhile, Ransom is an underground artist who has worked with Conway The Machine, Che Noir, 38 Spesh, and others in the gritty underground scene. However, he has made quite a name in the same space, despite the falling out of his group with Hitchcock and Joe Budden called The A-Team.

Deleted Scenes 2 Is A Good Project

Deleted Scenes 2 offers listeners who like clever bars, long but strong hooks and soul chops something to enjoy. At just under 15 minutes, those who support these techniques may restart it from the beginning after the final song ends. Ransom effectively uses his time by dropping short but impactful verses, and Craven’s production complements it despite its issues. With the featureless project, listeners get a glimpse of how well Ransom can hold down a song on his own, and he does a good job at it. The project serves as another entry in the ever-growing catalog of underground music and would be a decent point for anyone curious about this world of rap.

Tracklist

  1. American Made
  2. Arrival
  3. Body of Lies
  4. Homefront
  5. Deliver Us from Evil (Remix)

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown Unleash “Scaring The Hoes: DLC Pack” EP

One of the best albums of 2023 just got an upgrade, and it’s just as raw and impressive as its first volume. Moreover, JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown just released the Scaring The H*es: DLC Pack, a four-track expansion on their stellar collaborative project from this year. Peggy’s obviously back on production, and his instrumentals are still a wonder of impressive sampling, gritty drum patterns, and dynamic motion. Furthermore, these beats provide a wild but addictive bed for both MCs to dominate, with hilarious references and wordplay plus some sharp lyricism. Overall, if you’re not a fan of the fringes of hip-hop that become more and more important with each year, then let this be your starting point.

First off, the opening track “Guess What B***h, We Back H*e!” is a classic flow and formula for the duo, with woozy synths and hard-hitting drums. However, “HERMANOS” takes things in a more laidback direction (instrumentally, at least) with a breezy guitar sample, reminiscent verses from JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown, and a wild outro. In addition, the following cut “Tell Me Where To Go” is also a chilled-out cut with a great Al Green sample, calm delivery, and a solid boom-bap rhythm. Also, the final song brings back the gospel chops with distorted drums and a hilarious but sharp acapella outro from Danny.

In other news concerning the rappers, the Veteran artist looks like he’ll have a busy year, with him saying he has two more albums in the year. While it’s unclear whether this EP counts, he did spark rumors of a collab tape with Denzel Curry. Meanwhile, the unkowhatimsayin¿ creative recently spoke on working through writer’s block with Logic, and as complicated as the creative process might be, it’ll probably yield some more gold from all artists involved in the future. Russ Reveals New EP From CHOMP Series, “CHOMP 2.5”

New Jersey rapper Russ has released a new EP, titled CHOMP 2.5. The six-song EP is the artist’s third installment of his CHOMP series and features the work of various notable producers. Russ’ next full-length album is slated for this summer, titled CHOMP 3, with CHOMP 2.5 preceding its release. The EP features one self-produced track, “Wicked Race.” It also features contributions by producers Statik Selektah, Havoc, The Alchemist, Boi-1da, and 9th Wonder. The EP follows CHOMP (2020) and CHOMP 2 (2021). The EP and album notably feature artists like Snoop Dogg, Benny the Butcher, Busta Rhymes, and more.

Russ announced the release of CHOMP 2.5 yesterday, saying “CHOMP 2.5 @ MIDNIGHT.” The tweet led to fans’ excitement and was met with responses from users that “[can’t] wait” to hear the EP. The rapper then took to Twitter again shortly after the EP’s release. He shared that he “[loves]that people are havin to look up some of the bars and punchlines on CHOMP 2.5.” He added, “That’s the kind of rap I like.”

Russ Adds To Fan-Favorite Series

The EP explores themes of self-reflection and growth, with songs like “Perfectionist” about the artist “working on becoming the person” he wants to be. CHOMP 2.5 showcases the artist reminiscing about his past, and also celebrates his continuous, ever-changing journey to success.

Russ also shared a single earlier this month, titled “Fire.” The artist released “PUT YOU ON GAME” in January of this year, which he followed up shortly after with “Can’t Get This Right.” Several singles dropped over the months in 2022, which was also year of consistent releases for the artist. 2022 releases included “Home,” “BET,” “Last Night,” and more. Additionally, Russ discussed turning down $50 million for his music catalog in the song “Too Much” in December 2022. He also shared that he finished writing his second self-help book earlier this month. His first book titled “IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD,” debuted in 2019.

Quotable Lyrics:

I gave my twenties to the dream like Nivea (C’mon)
