Vybz Kartel and His Wife Get Matching Tattoos

vybz

In case you missed it, Vybz Kartel is once again a free man. Since returning to the streets, one of his first public acts was saluting his love with his wife, Sidem. Vybz and Sidem got matching tattoos, as captured by The Shade Room.

Vybz Kartel and his co-accused were set free a couple of weeks back after the Court of Appeal ruled against retrying them for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. The decision was made by a three-judge panel of Justices Marva McDonald-Bishop, Paulette Williams, and David Fraser.

According to the Jamaica Observer, the ruling was preceded by an abbreviated summary to assist the public in understanding the matter. The full judgment will be made available at www.courtofappeal.gov.jm.

Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, were convicted of the September 2011 murder of Williams. Their initial appeal to the local Court of Appeal in 2020 upheld their convictions.

The case was then taken to the United Kingdom-based Privy Council, which, on March 14, 2024, overturned the murder convictions on the grounds of juror misconduct. The Privy Council returned the case to the Jamaica Court of Appeal to decide on a retrial.

Despite the conviction, the trial has been marred by controversies and appeals regarding evidence tampering and judicial misconduct.

This ruling marks a significant turn in the high-profile case that has captivated the public for years. As of now, Vybz Kartel and his co-accused are free men, but the legal battles and controversies surrounding the case continue to be a topic of public interest.

Vybz Kartel Gets Matching Tattoos With His Fiancee

Vybz Kartel is out and about, focusing on himself and his health after being released from prison after a 13-year stint. Moreover, he got some new ink to commemorate this freedom, but that’s not the only menaingful body art that he added. In addition, the dancehall artist also got matching tattoos with his fiancée, Sidem Ozturk, with each one of them putting the other’s name on their arm. It’s always a wholesome affair, as small of a detail as it is, to see couples represent each other and tribute each other in this way. We also imagine that it carries a particular weight after all of his legal issues and the like.

Furthermore, Vybz Kartel could get right back to building his career and clout as a free man, and while he has, there are stronger priorities in mind. “Just finished my morning workout […] I can’t overdo it yet […] You know what I say, fitness and family? That’s the greatest,” he told his Instagram followers, as he’s focusing on his health journey after a rough time behind bars fighting Graves’ disease and a mysterious heart condition.

Vybz Kartel & His Fiancée’s Matching Tattoos

Still, for fans out there, this moment is a lot more about this health journey and Vybz Kartel’s personal growth and stasis than it is about new music or getting his career back together. After all, listeners got two dozen albums and mixtapes during this prison stint, so it’s clear that this prolific release schedule could come back at any time. He dropped First Week Out, a collection of loosies from past years, as his first official release since finding freedom, and it’s unclear whether or not he plans to keep the pace up. Hopefully, no matter what the outcome is, the emphasis on health and happiness remains.

Meanwhile, a lot of artists are very happy to see Vybz Kartel released, including one longtime fan in Drake. He recently posted himself wearing a “Free Vybz Kartel” shirt online to celebrate this freedom, and many others are following suit. Vybz Kartel Reveals His Biggest Priority Following Release From Prison

After 13 years, Vybz Kartel and three co-defendants gained their release from Jamaican prison on July 31. Back in 2014, the court sentenced the dancehall legend to life in prison for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Williams was one of Kartel’s associates at the time. Kartel’s trial was the longest in the island’s history, lasting 65 days. Toward the end of the process, the jury suspected that a juror was offering bribes to the other jurors. That contributed to Vybz receiving a guilty verdict, though he always maintained his innocence.

This past March, a London appeals court threw out the defendants’ convictions. They stated that allowing the juror accused of bribery to continue serving led to a “miscarriage of justice.” The Jamaican Court of Appeal then decided a retrial wasn’t worth the effort and set the four men free. Besides the passage of time between trials, the court also cited Vybz’s poor health in their explanation. Vybz Kartel suffers from Graves’ disease and an undisclosed heart condition, likely in part from the poor conditions of the prison he served his term in. His doctor gave statements in court saying that his heart was in such bad shape that he could die in his sleep at any time. Now that he’s free, he wants to get healthier.

The 48-year-old is hopeful to get back to normal after his time in prison. In a recent interview with Fox 5 New York’s Lisa Evers, he mentioned that he also purchased a bike and a treadmill to “hit the ground running” in his fitness journey.

Kartel stayed active musically during his time in prison. Between 2011 and 2024, he released nearly two dozen mixtapes and albums. To celebrate his newfound freedom, he released First Week Out, a mixtape of loosies from the last few years of his career. Now that he’s back home, the artist is looking to turn his life around and get back to doing what he’s made his living doing best.

Who Is Vybz Kartel’s Fiancée? Everything To Know About Sidem Ozturk

With Vybz Kartel back home, there have been several questions surrounding his next moves. We know that he got engaged from behind bars, popping the question to Sidem Öztürk, a 32-year-old woman with an impressive academic background. Since the two began dating, Öztürk has been behind the scenes, helping Kartel with his social media, uplifting his spirits, and holding him down personally and professionally. However, there have been plenty of questions surrounding who she is.

Early Life and Background

Sidem Öztürk, a 32-year-old woman of Kurdish descent, was born in Turkey. She moved to the UK at a young age and has lived in London for over 29 years. Öztürk pursued her education in psychology, sociology, and philosophy and reportedly worked as a social worker with vulnerable adults and children, according to Fox 5 News.

Öztürk’s relationship with Vybz Kartel began in an unconventional manner. While she’s been a fan of his music, the two began corresponding in 2015. However, they finally met in 2019 once she traveled to Jamaica. The relationship blossomed, and eventually, he popped the question. “How it happened was. we were just calling each other ‘hubby’ and ‘wifey” and he was like, ‘We’re heading toward marriage so you calling me hubby, or me calling you wifey is not serious enough. So you’re my fiancée, we’re going to get married,’” she said.

Commitment Amidst Challenges

The couple’s relationship has faced significant challenges due to Kartel’s imprisonment, though that’s clearly changed now that he’s been released. She explained how they weren’t able to have any physical contact when she visited him as a barrier separated them.

“Well, there’s glass between us so we don’t get to touch each other. We just look and talk through some little holes that are in the wood beneath the glass, so it’s not perfect, but we’re making the most of what we can,” she told Lisa Evers. “Oh the man I love, he’s so witty, even when you’re angry or you’re upset about something, he knows how to turn that around, and he can just make you laugh, and make you see the brighter side of things.”

Despite these obstacles, Öztürk remains devoted to Kartel and has even relocated to Jamaica to be closer to him. As he was away, she managed Kartel’s Instagram account and handled various business transactions on his behalf.

Public Attention & Criticism

Öztürk’s engagement with Kartel has attracted both support and criticism from the public. While some fans of Kartel have expressed their approval, others have been harsh and even hateful towards her. Öztürk, however, remains unfazed by the negativity and stays focused on her relationship. She has expressed her belief in the authenticity of their bond and dismissed accusations that their relationship is a publicity stunt. Furthermore, she was the muse for Kartel’s EP, True Religion.

Optimism For The Future

Vybz Kartel and  Öztürk can finally be together, now that he’s home. Following a decision by the UK Privy Council, Vybz Kartel was released from custody after his conviction was overturned. Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop of Jamaica’s Court of Appeal and two other judges decided against a retrial. Their decision highlighted procedural issues in Kartel’s original trial.

Immediately after he was freed, he shared videos of himself and Öztürk celebrating his freedom. They’re clearly making up for lost time. No word on when they will be getting married but his release could indicate that it could happen in the near future.

Vybz Kartel Freed: Everything We Know About The Dancehall Legend’s Release

Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, has been released from prison after judges ruled he should not face a retrial for murder, BBC reports. Kartel, who was imprisoned in 2014 for the alleged murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, has always maintained his innocence. His conviction was overturned by UK judges in March. On Wednesday, appeal judges in Jamaica decided the case would not go back to court. This decision marks the end of a long legal battle for the 48-year-old artist, who is said to be in poor health after spending 13 years in custody. Here’s everything we know about his release and the events leading up to it.

The Initial Conviction & Appeal

Vybz Kartel was convicted in 2014 alongside co-defendants Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John. The prosecution argued that Kartel and his associates were involved in the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams in August 2011. Williams and another man, Lamar Chow, were reportedly summoned to Kartel’s house after failing to return two unlicensed firearms. Chow testified that they were attacked and that he saw Williams lying motionless on the ground before the house was burned down. Williams’ body was never found.

Despite their consistent claims of innocence, Kartel and his co-defendants were sentenced to life in prison. Kartel, specifically, received a minimum term of 35 years. Following his conviction, Kartel appealed to courts in Jamaica, which upheld the verdict. However, his legal team did not relent and took the case to the Privy Council in London, Jamaica’s highest court of appeal.

The Privy Council Ruling

In March, the Privy Council in London ruled that the conviction was unsafe due to the presence of a biased juror. Kartel’s defense had argued that a juror had attempted to bribe other members of the jury, which should have led to their removal from the trial. The Privy Council agreed. They stated that the decision not to remove the juror infringed on the defendants’ fundamental right to a fair hearing. The judges concluded that this oversight was “fatal to the safety of the convictions which followed.”

Decision Against A Retrial

Despite the Privy Council’s ruling, Jamaican authorities had the option to retry Kartel and his co-defendants. However, on Wednesday, Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop of Jamaica’s Court of Appeal, along with two other judges, decided against a retrial. They considered several factors, including the “egregious nature and seriousness of the offense,” the unavailability of access to witnesses and evidence, the passage of time, and the considerable expense of a retrial. Additionally, Kartel’s declining health played a significant role in their decision. The judges concluded that “the interests of justice do not require a new trial,” and formally acquitted Kartel and his co-defendants.

Reaction To The Release

Kartel’s release has sparked widespread reactions in Jamaica and beyond. Known for hits like “Clarks,” “Ramping Shop,” and “Summer Time,” Vybz Kartel is one of Jamaica’s most influential dancehall artists. His music career, which continued to thrive even while he was imprisoned, has shaped and propelled dancehall internationally. Vybz’s release is seen as a monumental moment for dancehall music.

His release has been met with plenty of praise, from mainstream artists like Drake and Cardi B to 1Xtra’s Dancehall Show presenter, Seani B, who described Kartel’s release as a “mammoth day” for Jamaica and the dancehall community at large. Seani also acknowledged the lingering pain of Williams’ family, emphasizing the need to remember the victim amid the celebrations. No doubt that he’ll be releasing new music soon, indicating his plans to reclaim his spot as the top artist in the dancehall scene.

Drake Rocks “Free Vybz Kartel” Shirt To Celebrate Kartel’s Release From Prison

Drake has always had a contentious relationship with dancehall. The rapper was criticized for exploiting the Jamaican genre during the making of the “Find Your Love” video way back in 2010. That said, he has repeatedly voiced his adoration for its artists. He has collaborated with numerous dancehall legends, and helped to boost their profile with American listeners. It’s been a while since Drake dabbled in dancehall in his own music, but the rapper’s recent Instagram post confirms that he’s still very much a supporter. He celebrated the release of Vybz Kartel by rocking a “Free Vybz” t-shirt on Instagram.

This is not the first time Drake has shown off his “Free Vybz” merch. The rapper posted a photo of the shirt on his Instagram Story back on April 2. “Up 2 Di Time,” the rest of the text on the shirt reads. “Free Kartel, free world boss.” The timing could not have been better. Vybz Kartel was sprung from prison on July 31. The Jamaican deejay was convicted of murder back in 2011, but the Privy Council in the United Kingdom overturned his conviction back in March. The Privy Council cited juror misconduct and bribery as the main causes, according to Rolling Stone.

Drake Cites Vybz Kartel As A Huge Musical Influence

Drake has advocated for Vybz Kartel’s release for most of his career. The rapper praised the deejay during a 2016 interview with Narduwar. “Vybz Kartel is one of my biggest inspirations, one of my favorite artists,” he explained. “You want to talk about a guy coming out of a place that has their own thing, their own culture, and absolutely just taking over. The one person to idolize.” Drake proceeded to single out Kartel’s ability to transcend era, and maintain longevity within Jamaican culture. “I been to Jamaica,” he explained. “And no matter what, people are always holding up Vybz as an icon.” The Toronto artist also revealed that PARTYNEXTDOOR shares his admiration for Kartel.

Drake and Vybz Kartel have never collaborated on a song, for obvious reasons. The former did link up with Kartel’s longtime producer, however, in 2022. Rvssian posted photos alongside the 6 God on IG, fueling rumors that they were going to cook up music together. Sadly, nothing from the sessions has seen the light of day. The closest fans have come to getting an OVO and Vybz Kartel collaboration was the PARTYNEXTDOOR single “Not Nice.” The 2016 song featured a sample of Kartel’s “Real Bad Gal,” which was unreleased at the time. Hopefully fans will get an official Drake and Kartel song, since the latter is a free man.

Drake Supported Vybz Kartel’s Release From Prison, And As With Anything Drake-Related, People Had Thoughts

Drake hasn’t released a song since Kendrick Lamar metaphorically punted him into the sun with “Not Like Us,” and Drake meekly responded with “The Heart Part 6.”

However, Drake has had plenty to say on his Instagram Story — from causing a stir with a graphic tee to seemingly referencing Lamar and calling out Gordo (formerly known as DJ Carnage).

The trend continued on Wednesday, July 31, when Drake celebrated Vybz Kartel’s release from prison by posting a selfie showing him posing in a “FREE KARTEL FREE WORLD BOSS” graphic tee.

According to Rolling Stone, the Jamaican dancehall artist is “a free man after a decade in prison” after “a Jamaican court of appeals declined Wednesday to retry Vybz Kartel after the dancehall star’s 2014 murder conviction was overturned earlier this year.”

As per Rolling Stone, Kartel had been found guilty in 2014 of murdering Clive “Lizard” Williams, but the UK-based Privy Council overturned the ruling this March after “finding evidence of juror misconduct in Kartel’s initial trial.”

As happens every time Drake gets involved with anything, this news was overshadowed online by people reacting to Drake’s post — mostly jokingly (or maybe seriously) hoping that Kartel will not collaborate on a song with Drake.
