Pete Rock Goes Bar For Bar With Common On “All Kind Of Ideas”

It is safe to say that Common and Pete Rock are pouring their souls into this upcoming album, The Auditorium, Vol. 1. The July 12 release will be the first time this tandem has made a full-length effort together and so far, it has yet to disappoint. These East Coast legends have given fans two offerings from the tape, and they include “Wise Up” and “Dreamin’”. Both cuts feature incredible jazzy, boom-bap production, as well as intricate lyricism from the Be MC. However, Common and Pete Rock are apparently looking to one up themselves, as “All Kind Of Ideas” proves to be equally impressive.

Things are a little different on this single, as Pete is now laying down some bars. “Keep your top five, I’m god’s favorite producer / Sixteen bars of pressure, no metronome / Thinking outside the box, that’s a better zone“. It is clear that he wanted to deliver his best stuff as he is in fact trying to complement the lyrical mastermind that is Common. “On the mic, I’m Micah Parsons any subject I tackle / And grapple with wack dudes / And school n****s like black schools ‘cause they lack rules“, the Chicago MC spits. Pete and Common have both been thrilled to share this passion project with fans since they first teased it, and we are just as anxious them to get this out on July 12.

Latto Is On Another Playing Field With Multi-Phased Banger “Big Mama”

The female rap scene is churning out hit after hit this year it seems, and we are here for it. Latto is one of those leading ladies right now, and songs like “Big Mama” are the reason why. From her to stellar feature on Anycia’s “BACK OUTSIDE” to the threatening “Sunday Service”, Big Latto is putting her heels on the necks of her competition. This has the possibility of being the sixth single from her upcoming album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea. “Big Mama” was previously teased a couple of weeks ago on social media, and from the snippet, it seemed the song was going for more of a syrupy and seductive, R&B vibe.

Well, that is partially true, as Latto and her fleet of talented producers (COUPE, Tay Keith, OZ) switch things up halfway through. The intensity level goes from 0-100 almost instantaneously, as her flows and bars get more aggressive. Throughout the 2:54 runtime, she talks about various feelings one experiences throughout a relationship. From insecurities to being incredibly smitten, she covers it all. Like the instrumental, Latto is dynamic, as you get hints of seriousness, vulnerability, and humor all in one.

Lil Durk Recounts His Life Lately On “Went Hollywood For A Year”

Lil Durk is getting into his introspective and heartfelt side on “Went Hollywood For A Year”. This is the newest and second solo release for the Chicago, Illinois rapper, following up February’s “Old Days”. It seems that the prolific veteran is getting back into his more melodic and personal bag for 2024, but it makes sense. He is getting ready to drop Love Songs 4 the Streets 3 very soon.

This is a series in which Durk switches his turnt energy for mellow cuts about his life, relationships, and more. The last time fans got an entry in this series was 2019, which came two years after the original. Lil Durk has also been on this energy for a minute, though, as his 2023 album Almost Healed focused on similar topics. “Went Hollywood For A Year” sees Smurk work with frequent collaborator trap legend Southside. The Atlanta producer lends him a skittering, piano-heavy instrumental, which he raps passionately over. “Tell your mama I send my love and we forever gon’ be a family / Big brother died at the club (Oh, woah), I don’t like to party or be around it (Woah, woah, woah)“. Stream the brand-new single now, or watch the music video below.

Ravyn Lenae & Ty Dolla $ign Are A Perfect Match On “Dream Girl”

Ravyn Lenae and Ty Dolla $ign have a winner with “Dream Girl”. The Chicago, Illinois native has just teamed up the California powerhouse for single number three off the former’s sophomore album. Ravyn will be releasing Bird’s Eye on August 9, and it figures to be a stellar R&B tape for 2024. The veteran singer and songwriter’s instantly recognizable high-pitch and cutsy vocals, along with her stellar production choices make her a force in the space. With those things going for her, she figures to make some noise later this summer.

“Dream Girl” supersedes “Love Me Not” and “Love Is Blind”, both of which dropped on May 3. Each track sound completely different from this Ty Dolla $ign collaboration, ensuring that we have a diverse sound palette on our hands. The tandem we got over a month ago was fantastic, and this solo drop is equally impressive. On “Dream Girl”, Ravyn and Ty are singing about the feelings they get when they meet that special someone over a creative instrumental. It blends a beautiful guitar loop with a groovy drum pattern that will make you want to dance the night away. Additionally, for a first-ever team-up, they sound like they have worked together for decades. “Dream Girl” is addicting as hell, and it figures to be in constant rotation for us going forward.

42 Dugg & Sexyy Red Have One With “N.P.O.”

42 Dugg is inching closer and closer to dropping his first solo album in three years with 4EVA US NEVA THEM. The Detroit, Michigan native and CMG signee has one single from the project out right now called “Win Wit Us”, which dropped back in the middle of May. Overall, this track is a great indicator that the blue-collar MC is going to give this tape his all, as he sounds hungrier than ever. However, we would argue that 42 Dugg sounds just as amped on “N.P.O.”, the second offering from 4UNT.

It makes sense why the veteran is bringing a lot of energy right now. 42 Dugg was recently released from prison in October of 2023 after receiving a one-year sentence for gun possession as a felon. So, he is probably feeling the need to prove to listeners that he did not go anywhere. If that is the case, then 42 Dugg is going to have a successful album on his hands, especially with tracks like “N.P.O.” on it. This song is raunchy and unhinged, thanks to a guest appearance from nonother than Sexyy Red. From the ratchet bars to the banging and anthemic instrumental, this new pairing is 1/1 in our books.

Rema & Shallipopi Collab For Exhilarating Afrobeats Banger “BENIN BOYS”

Rema has pretty quickly become a mainstay in the Afropop/Afrobeats space, but also just in general. Ever since exploding with his viral radio hit, “Calm Down”, as well as its even more popular remix featuring Selena Gomez, he has managed to keep up the momentum. While his last few releases, including the RAVAGE EP are not on that same level, there is still tons of quality to be had. However, this new Rema/Shallipopi collaboration “BENIN BOYS” has a chance to reach a similar mark.

This is the Benin City native’s first record of 2024, and it seems to be starting the rollout for his sophomore album, HE IS. There is no drop date for the project yet, but we feel pretty good about it will coming out sometime later this summer or early fall. Hopefully, that happens, because “BENIN BOYS” is a rollercoaster ride that continues to twist and turn with every passing second. Both Rema and Shallipopi bring some uncontrollable energy to the already dramatic and thrilling instrumental. From the rhythmic drums to the hard-hitting keys, this track has it all. It makes sense why Rema and Shallipopi are giving this one their all, as this single is about showing love to their “hoods”, the lead artist explains to Rolling Stone. There are plenty of cultural nods in the music video as well, so be sure to check that out too with the link below.

Ice Spice Reveals Alternate “Y2K” Cover & Fans Are Split On Their Thoughts

Ice Spice is coming out with her new album Y2K very, very soon, and it looks like she’s got a few different ways to increase hype for it and deliver some notable art to fans. Moreover, she recently took to social media to share an alternate cover art to the original artwork, and it certainly has a lot of aesthetic similarities. For example, there’s still a heavy blue and green color scheme for the most part, city sights, and a general art style that harkens back to the 2000s… to absolutely no one’s surprise. However, on this new art, there are two Spices: one trapped in the train, and one towering over the NYC skyline with her OG orange curls, not the slick hair that she’s been rocking as of late.

Overall, there are plenty of differences that could make a fan prefer one over another, but also enough similarities that would have them disliking or praising both equally. Regardless, it’s a small but effective way to further tease Y2K and give fans a full preview of what the album will sound or feel like. Ice Spice has already hinted at the sonic direction with plenty of singles, most recently the rapid-flowing “Phat Butt.” But the visual aspects will surely prove crucial to the full-length record’s perception, as well.

Ice Spice’s New Cover For Y2K

Still, you might remember that the reception to the original Y2K cover art was pretty divisive. In fact, Ice Spice stepped in to defend the artwork online shortly after its reveal. “David LaChapelle is #Y2K!” she said of its creator. “soooo sweet + legendary he didn’t even charge me cus he f**ks wit a real b***h [lipstick mark emoji]. thank U for all the incredible art you’ve put out through the years this cover means everything to me [red heart emoji] & yes Y2K was placed on the trash can on purpose can u guess why?”

Meanwhile, as the Latto feud seems to heat up, we might get even more of a promotional push for Ice Spice’s Y2K. Whether this works out in either femcee’s favor or not, there’s certainly a lot of interest in determining whether we’ll see a back and forth. Maybe they will just continue their not-so-cold war without getting in each other’s way too much. Or maybe this alternate cover will be part of one of the shots that they trade.

Jay Worthy Builds On His Momentum With Album Single “105 West” Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Channel Tres & More

Jay Worthy is always going to be a popular voice in the underground hip-hop scene, especially on the West Coast. However, after popping out to The Pop Out: Ken and Friends a couple of days ago, this could be one of the most vital turning points in his career. On top of that, if Kendrick Lamar is indeed shooting a music video for “Not Like Us” in Compton, that would be the cherry on top. Because of all of this, he has chance to break into the mainstream, that is of course if he wants to. He is already extremely successful in his lane and does not absolutely need some viral moment to propel his career. In that same breath though, Jay Worthy is definitely capitalizing on this period, dropping a new single “105 West”.

This is a massive collaboration track, as it features DaM-FunK, A-Trak, Ty Dolla $ign, Channel Tres, and DJ Quik. On “105 West”, Jay Worthy and the crew bring the ultimate California summer vibes, as the production from DaM-FunK is playing heavy on the synth-funk sound. Everyone delivers great and energizing performances, especially Ty Dolla $ign, as he interpolates the melody from the chorus on Snoop Dogg’s “Gin & Juice”. On top of this being a great track on its own, it will soon find a home on an upcoming Jay and DaM-FunK album. According to Stereogum, Magic Hour will hit streaming platforms sometime next month. If “105 West” has shown us anything, it is that this project will be one to remember for the year and perhaps beyond. The West Coast notches another W for the books.

Boldy James Is Nearing Project #3 With Conductor Williams-Produced Single “Offwhite Lumberjack”

Boldy James and Conductor Williams are cooking up something grandiose without the pretentiousness. Their collaborative record, Across the Tracks, is due in just one week. June 28 should be a special day for these two prolific and consistent artists, as the lead single, “Terms And Conditions”, is getting is receiving tons of adoration from listeners. These two are no strangers to each other, so you already know their chemistry will be off the charts once we get the full tape. For the gritty Detroit, Michigan rapper, this will be project number three. It will follow up his album of the year contender, Penalty of Leadership, as well as Trapper’s Alley: Pros & Cons. With just several days remaining, Boldy James and The Conductor are looking to give fans presumably one more taste of the record with “Offwhite Lumberjack”.

They way we have described the sound of Across the Tracks so far is tough yet elegant. There is a good chance that these two are going to carry that throughout the eight other songs as well. We say that because “Offwhite Lumberjack” provides those same qualities. The purposefully dirty guitar sample woven into the instrumental feels special but adds that blue-collar feel that you expect from Boldy. Additionally, the spaced-out drums add a nice hazy feel. Per usual, the bars are great too, as there are plenty of enjoyable one liners to be had. It might be crazy to say this early, but there is a chance that Boldy James has two potentials for the best rap album of 2024. We foresee Across the Tracks winding up on a lot of end-of-the-year lists and you will almost assuredly see it on ours.

Tyga & 310babii Collide On Bouncy Single “Uh Huh”

Tyga is staying hot as he drops a club-ready track with 310babii, “Uh Huh”. This is now the California veteran’s third solo release of the year, following “Sensei” and “Hello B*tch”. The latter is taking off, raking in about 2.2 million views on YouTube in two weeks. Part of the reason it is doing so well is the instrumental and the sample that it works in. Lil Jon’s classic “Couldn’t Be A Better Playa” is used to great effect, modernizing the eerie beat for the youth. In a similar way to “Hello B*tch”, Tyga is putting people on to something or someone many people might not know. 310babii is relatively new to the rap game, with the Inglewood, California native blowing up just last year.

The song to know is “soak city”, which has an equally popular alternate all-West Coast version. Tyga makes an appearance, along with Blueface, OHGEESY, and the BlueBucksClan. Subsequently, that seems to be where him and 310 begun to develop some synergy. Now, Tyga has him one of his tracks, that being “Uh Huh”. Also like the last single, this one is also ready for the night club atmosphere. Both rappers are extremely braggadocious, as per usual, and the instrumental is also pretty ear-grabbing. The quick piano keys and heavy bass play really nice together. Tyga and 310 do find pockets very quickly and they are able to keep things engaging throughout the short but punchy run time. There is a chance that this track, along with the other two we mentioned, do have some chance of making an album this year. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but if Tyga proceeds in that manner he has a solid record on his hands.
