Tory Lanez Update: DA Says Rapper Is “Avoiding Accountability” With Alcoholism Excuses

On Monday (August 7), Tory Lanez was due to find out his fate regarding his Megan Thee Stallion shooting trial. The Canadian was found guilty in late 2022 and has since been behind bars. He’s facing up to 13 years in prison for his crimes. Due to the sheer amount of discussion that took place yesterday, sentencing was pushed to Tuesday. The internet has been busy speculating exactly how much time Lanez will end up doing. There are some, such as Iggy Azalea, who wrote letters to the judge suggesting a reduced sentence that would focus on transforming her longtime friend, rather than destroying his life.

Megan Thee Stallion didn’t attend in person (to protect her mental health), though she did write a letter requesting no remorse for Lanez due to the trauma she’s endured at his hands. According to journalist Meghann Cuniff, the father of one’s legal team painted the picture of Tory as a heavy drinker in hopes of garnering sympathy from the District Attorney, but that didn’t go over so well. “Judge Herriford said while the shooting obviously involved alcohol, there is no evidence of Lanez [having a drinking problem], including in the 76 letters submitted for Lanez,” she reported via Twitter this morning.

In addition, Herriford also pointed out that Lanez has never once admitted to shooting Megan. “What is he alleging he did as a result of alcohol-use disorder if he didn’t do anything?” the judge pondered. “What did the doctor conclude he did as a result of alcohol use? It’s very unclear.” According to the singer’s lawyers, “yelling” and the “argument that went back and forth in the car” were a direct result of intoxication problems.

When given his turn to speak, DA Alex Bott was clearly unimpressed with the defense. He stated that it shows Lanez’s “willingness to do anything and everything to avoid accountability for the crime.” Bott also accused the “Say It” hitmaker of “talking out both sides of his mouth” by representing himself as both someone with alcoholism/a mental disorder and a positive role model for his son.

Iggy Azalea Explained The Letter She Wrote For The Tory Lanez Shooting Trial And Her Relationship With Him Now

Tory Lanez’s sentencing in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting trial was set to be delivered yesterday (August 7), but it was ultimately postponed to today. One interesting note from yesterday, though, was the fact that Iggy Azalea was one of many people who wrote a letter on Lanez’ behalf. Now, she has clarified what’s going on with that.

An X (aka Twitter) user wrote, “I’m trying to find an issue with this. What is the big deal with Iggy showing support to her friend? Anyone who followed the case would know there was inconclusiveness and lies throughout the whole thing. Even Megan tried to protect Tory, so what is the big deal with Iggy comforting her friend with a PRIVATE letter? @MeghannCuniff stated there were over 70+ letters sent, yet she only name-drops Iggy? Weird. Iggy sending a letter doesn’t mean she condones what Tory allegedly did. It is simply her being there for her friend; many of you would do the same.”

To that, Azalea responded:

“For the record:

1. I have not been in touch with tory for months, I have no reason to be, but I do wish him well.

2. I don’t ‘support’ anyone.
the whole thing is full of oddities. My letter never mentioned anything in regard to what happened that night.

3. I was told this was for a judge only, yet it’s being discussed in public? I never intended to publicly comment.

4. Iam not in support of throwing away ANY ones life if we can give reasonable punishments that are rehabilitative instead.
I support prison reform. Period.

5. I was asked to write about my genuine experience and the type of punishment I think he deserves: I did.

It’s not really that interesting but I understand why it’s being sensationalized. . . [shrugging emoji]

See ya next week to discuss pizza toppings I suppose. Lol.”

Another user responded, “people really get on this app and say anything for a few clicks you shouldn’t even have to address this.” Azalea replied, “I really hate that this is todays discourse online because it’s not really an explosive revelation. Yes: he should be held accountable. No: the charges don’t warrant 5plus in prison. Most agree with that sentiment because it’s a reasonable take. This is not news worthy. [shrugging emoji].”

Iggy Azalea Responds To Tory Lanez Letter Drama

Iggy Azalea recently caused a lot of controversy on Twitter when the court in Tory Lanez’s case revealed that she wrote one of over 70 letters supporting him. Of course, this ruffled feathers because of Lanez’s guilty conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, a fellow female rapper. Not only that, but some believe that this is because Megan never collaborated with the Australian rapper. However, Iggy actually responded to all this drama on Twitter. Replying on Twitter to coverage of her letter, she addressed this development and the criticism towards her, maintaining that she didn’t side with anyone and that her beliefs go deeper than who’s right in this case.

“For the record,” Iggy Azalea’s tweet began. “1. I have not been in touch with Tory for months, I have no reason to be, but I do wish him well. 2. I don’t ‘support’ anyone. The whole things is full of oddities. My letter never mentioned anything in regard to what happened that night.” Her subsequent points detail the circumstances of the letter itself, and why she thinks advocating for Tory Lanez is important regardless of guilt.

Iggy Azalea’s Statement On Tory Lanez Letter

“3. I was told this was for a judge only. Yet it’s being discussed in public?” Iggy Azalea continued. “I never intended to publicly comment. 4. I am not in support of throwing away ANY ones life. We can give reasonable punishments that are rehabilitative instead. I support prison reform. Period. 5. I was asked to write about my genuine experiences and the type of punishment I think he deserves: I did. It’s not really that interesting but I understand why it’s being sensationalized… See ya next week to discuss pizza toppings I suppose. No: the charges don’t warrant 5plus in prison. Most agree with that sentiment because it’s a reasonable take. This is not news worthy.”

Iggy’s Response To Fan

Meanwhile, speaking of statements, Megan Thee Stallion issued one of her own during the hearing on Lanez’s sentencing via the District Attorney. Given the animosity-filled and murky nature of this discourse and case, statements like these were never going to land well for everyone no matter what. Still, it stands to reason that the 33-year-old’s motive behind the letter isn’t as vindictive or dismissive of Megan’s story as it might seem to fans. With that in mind, stick around on HNHH for more news and the latest updates on Iggy Azalea and the Tory Lanez case.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Recent Statement On Tory Lanez Sentence Has No Mercy

Part Of Megan Thee Stallion’s Statement About Tory Lanez

“Important: Judge Herriford said he believes Lanez’s actions after the shooting, the social media posts and harassment of Megan, are a major aggravating factor in his sentence,” the journalist went on. “He says he won’t consider lack of remorse, but he says considering the post-shooting actions are similar. More from Megan Thee Stallion’s statement at Tory Lanez’s sentencing: ‘He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma, he tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul.’ ‘He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media, he released music videos and songs to damage my character and continue his crusade.

“‘At first, he tried to deny the shooting ever happened,’” Cuniff concluded. “‘Then, he attempted to place the blame on my former best friend. In his tantrum of lies, he’s blamed the system, blamed the press and, as of late, he’s using his childhood trauma to shield himself and avoid culpability.’ ‘For once, the defendant must be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice.’ The sentencing hearing continues tomorrow at 10:30 am in Los Angeles.” For more news and the latest updates on Megan Thee Stallion and the Tory Lanez case, stay up to date on HNHH.

Tory Lanez’s Sentencing Was Postponed Another Day, But In Court Documents, Megan Thee Stallion Was Sure To Weigh In On The Matter

All eyes were on the Los Angeles County courthouse as hip-hop fans awaited the fate of Tory Lanez. In December 2022, the rapper was found guilty of committing assault with a firearm, which caused great bodily injury to Megan Thee Stallion. Lanez’s sentencing being rescheduled in June, and not it’s been postponed again.

People assumed Lanez’s sentencing was supposed to happen on Monday, August 7. But according to legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, the presiding judge, David Herriford, surprised them with yet another delay.

“Incredibly, Judge Herriford managed not to finish today,” wrote Cuniff. “We are coming back tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. A few more things to talk about, then an argument, then Herriford will sentence Tory Lanez.” She added, “Megan [Thee Stallion] did not speak in person, but she submitted a statement that District Attorney Kathy Ta read aloud.”

In the series of posts shared to X (formerly Twitter), Cuniff wrote, “Megan said she struggled with whether to attend in person, and her absence should be seen as preserving her mental well-being. She said since Tory shot her, ‘I’ve not experienced a single day of peace. He lied to anyone that would listen.’”

Lanez could face up to 13 years behind bars. Several recording artists, including Meek Mill and Iggy Azalea, have weighed in on sentencing recommendations. In court documents, Megan shared her thoughts with the district attorney. “Megan said mercy is for people who show remorse, and Lanez has shown none,” wrote Cuniff adding, “[Megan] wants the sentence to be a message for every woman [that has faced] violence.”

Cuniff was sure to note that the judge mentioned that Lanez’s behavior post-incident would play a part in his sentencing. “Judge Herriford said he believes Lanez’s actions after the shooting, the social media posts, and harassment of Megan are a major aggravating factor in his sentence,” wrote Cuniff. “He says he won’t consider lack of remorse, but he says considering the post-shooting actions are similar.”

Tory Lanez Sentencing To Continue On Tuesday For Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

It seems like Tory Lanez’s sentence for being found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion back in 2020 will take just a little longer to emerge. Moreover, reporter Meghann Cuniff took to Twitter to update followers on the news. However, it’s unclear as of writing this article exactly why there were so many delays in the process. For those unaware, the court was supposed to sentence the Canadian artist today (August 7), but session will continue tomorrow Tuesday, August 8. In addition, Cuniff relayed other important parts of today’s court happenings as related to the sentence.

“Incredibly, Judge Herriford managed to not finish today,” she wrote on the social media platform. “We are coming back tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. A few more things to talk about, then argument, then Herriford will sentence Tory Lanez. Megan did not speak in person, but she submitted a statement that DA Kathy Ta read aloud.” In subsequent tweets, the journalist went on to detail some of what this statement contained. Not only that, she also stated that the judge in the Los Angeles case hinted at what the future sentence could be impacted by.

Iggy Azalea Reportedly Wrote A Letter Of Support For Tory Lanez Ahead Of His Sentencing For Shooting Megan Thee Stallion

Tory Lanez is due to be sentenced in a little over 90 minutes as of this writing, but first, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford had over 70 letters of support for the rapper to read through as he considered his decision, according to independent journalist Meghann Cuniff. One of those letters, she reported, comes from fellow rapper Iggy Azalea, who was rumored to be dating Lanez after collaborating with him late last year. She reportedly asked for a sentence that would be “transformational, not life destroying.”

No stranger to controversy herself, Azalea was criticized by fans online for her connection with Lanez, who was accused of shooting Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the back of her feet after a disagreement in the summer of 2020. Azalea took the backlash in stride at the time, writing on Twitter, “You’re all very welcome to speak your opinion freely about me… just as long as we all have an understanding: you are having a monologue & not a discussion with me – because (respectfully) my bills remain paid without your two cents.”

Tory had previously announced he was executive producing the Australian rapper’s next album, although his motivations struck some as dubious. While he said he wanted to produce a female artist’s album “for a while,” to some observers, the announcement appeared to be a PR move, as he was then facing a criminal trial for assaulting a female artist — a crime for which he was later convicted. Meanwhile, Azalea has been censured multiple times in the past for allegedly co-opting her rap persona from existing Southern female rappers.

In addition to summarizing the letters of support for Lanez, whose defense requested a lenient sentence of probation and rehab against the prosecutors’ recommended 13 years in prison, Herriford heard from three speakers on the rapper’s behalf. One was Tory’s father, who apologized for his outburst after the original verdict, and a jail chaplain who spoke to Lanez’s character. Another jail employee wrote a letter calling him “remorseful,” which Cuniff notes is the closest Lanez has ever come to admitting guilt or taking responsibility for the shooting.

Tory Lanez’s Defense Filed A 41-page Memo Requesting He Be Sentenced To Probation And Rehab Instead Of Prison

Tory Lanez’s August 7 sentencing hearing is rapidly approaching, and after doing everything in their power to delay the inevitable, his lawyers are now asking for leniency from the court, according to Meghann Cuniff via Rolling Stone. While prosecutors have recommended 13 years in prison for the Canadian entertainer, his defense team filed a 41-page memo requesting he instead be sentenced to probation and sent to rehab, citing an alcohol addiction and childhood trauma.

Don’t be alarmed. That noise you just heard was me rolling my eyes so hard that they actually made a sound audible through your device’s screen. Strap in, it’s going to get louder.

The memo is quoted saying that the evidence against Tory is “questionable at best and by no means overwhelming” (roll), writing, “Assuming the allegations are true, Mr. Peterson’s psychological, physical, and childhood trauma was a factor in the commission of the offense” (roll). “Likewise, the current offense is connected to Mr. Peterson’s childhood trauma and mental illness, alcohol-use disorder,” it continues. “compromised his ability to manage and regulate his emotions and behaviors and that his alcohol use disorder played a significant role in the alleged offenses” (mega roll).

Tory Lanez, lest we all forget, was found guilty of committing assault with a firearm causing great bodily injury; concealing a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He was accused of shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the back of her feet in July 2020 and although he maintained his innocence, he was also never able to explain the shooting, insinuating her friend Kelsey was the one who pulled the trigger.

However, it was his own defense’s witness who identified him as the shooter during the trial, which also considered gunshot residue on Tory, text messages, and calls from jail that pretty thoroughly suggested he tried to not only apologize for the shooting, but also bribe the women to keep quiet. He also apparently led a harassment campaign against Meg, trying to paint her as a liar, leading to her admitting to suicidal thoughts.
