Jim Carrey Initially Said No To Working With The Weeknd On ‘Dawn FM’

The Weeknd had a handful of collaborators on his latest album, Dawn FM, but perhaps the most important of them all was Jim Carrey, who does voice acting at various points throughout the project and helps move the narrative forward. While he ended up being a pivotal part of Dawn FM, Carrey says he initially turned down The Weeknd’s request to get on board.

Speaking with ET, Carrey said of The Weeknd and the album:

“He’s an incredible guy, an incredible artist, and a lovely person, and I feel very lucky to be his friend. He put it to me that he was doing this thing that was the radio station in purgatory, and I was like, ‘I love you, but I don’t want to do any work.’ And he said, ‘You know, you can just do it into your iPhone.’ Like, that it’s broadcast quality.

And then I started waking up in the middle of the night, which is what happens with me: I wake in the middle of the night and I start spitting bars [laughs] of all things, for god’s sake.

And to have our lives comes full-circle, because The Mask was the very first movie he ever saw and kind of inspired him to want to be in this thing, and boy, did he ever get in this thing.”

What Songs Is The Weeknd Playing On The ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ Tour?

The pandemic made it so The Weeknd couldn’t tour behind 2020’s After Hours immediately following its release, but he didn’t want that to stop him from putting out another album. He ended up doing just that, dropping Dawn FM earlier this year. That didn’t put an After Hours tour to rest, though. Instead, The Weeknd is supporting both albums on his ongoing After Hours Til Dawn tour.

The trek kicked off in mid-July and so far, The Weeknd has six shows under his belt (as of August 4). At those concerts, what songs has he been performing most?

The answer right now is all of them, according to data from Setlist.fm, the most comprehensive resource for concert setlists available online; For each show, he’s had the exact same 29-song setlist, which makes sense given how early into the tour he is.

Setlist.fm also has an “average setlist” for the After Hours Til Dawn tour, which is based on setlists from previous shows, so it’s an indication of how an upcoming The Weeknd show might be structured. This one was probably pretty easy to figure out.

As for album-by-album representation on the setlist, Dawn FM has the most songs included, followed closely by After Hours. Then, it’s Starboy, Beauty Behind The Madness, House Of Balloons, My Dear Melancholy, and Kiss Land. If all the “covers” (songs The Weeknd performs on but isn’t the primary artist of on the album version) were considered an album, they’d go after Starboy in the rankings and before Beauty.

The Weeknd Adds Summer Walker To A High-Stakes Remix Of ‘Best Friends’

Earlier this week, rumors circulated that The Weeknd would release a remix to “Best Friends,” a Dawn FM cut, featuring Summer Walker. The Starboy quickly confirmed the reports, saying the “Girls Need Love” singer “carried” and “f*cking crushed it.” Well, the track is officially here and he did not lie.

The Over It artist’s emotive vocals and sharp pen provide an even fresher take than the original version. The emotionally bound narrative here aligns well with what she often sings about, struggling to balance love and friendship as well. As two of the most vulnerable voices in music today, this was a smart choice.

This unexpected collaboration comes at an opportune time for both artists. The Weeknd is surfing the waves caused by his 80s-inspired January album Dawn FM featuring Lil Wayne, Tyler, The Creator, Quincy Jones and Jim Carrey. “Out Of Time” and “Sacrifice” emerged as standouts and maintained that place for some time.

As for Summer Walker, aside from verses on Lil Durk and Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 albums, she has been quiet. The “Come Thru” broke streaming records back in November with Still Over It powered by appearances from Lil Durk, SZA, City Girls and more.
