Nicki Minaj may be popping off on Megan Thee Stallion right now, but in many’s eyes, her main antagonist as a femcee is Cardi B, and vice versa. Their feud, however vague or subliminal, rages on following years of alleged incidents, battles between their partners, and fanbase clashing. But any two rivals can come together if it’s for the right cause, and they found one in a new bill proposed in the U.S. Congress to regulate artificial intelligence. The bipartisan No Artificial Intelligence Fake Replicas And Unauthorized Duplications Act (“No AI FRAUD”) was introduced in the House on January 10, and Nicki and Cardi joined over 300 other artists and creatives in signing an open letter supporting it.

Furthermore, other big names include 21 S*vage, Chuck D, Common, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Questlove, Smokey Robinson, and many more. The “No AI FRAUD” act would federally protect voices and likenesses from unchecked replication with AI technology. The Human Artistry Campaign (H.A.C.) published this letter as a running ad in print editions of USA Today on Friday (February 2). “The No AI FRAUD Act would defend your fundamental human right to your voice & likeness, protecting everyone from nonconsensual deepfakes,” it reads. “Protect your individuality. Support HR 6943.”

For those unaware, the H.A.C. relayed seven core tenants about this technology back in March of 2023. Of course, these include proper licensing for artistic works used to craft AI models and limitations on the government’s ability to change intellectual property law to provide exploitable exemptions that artificial intelligence developers could take advantage of. Not only that, but this new act follows the “NO FAKES” Act from October of last year. The “No AI FRAUD” Act’s architects are Representatives María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Rob Wittman (R-VA), Nathaniel Moran (R-TX), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), and Joe Morelle (D-NY).

“It’s time for bad actors using AI to face the music,” Rep. Salazar stated when they announced it. “This bill plugs a hole in the law and gives artists and U.S. citizens the power to protect their rights, their creative work, and their fundamental individuality online.” What’s more is that Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee proposed similar legislation on the same day: the Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security -– or “ELVIS” -– Act). Nevertheless, “No AI FRAUD” received support from many industry titans like the Recording Academy, Universal Music Group, and more. No wonder Cardi B and Nicki Minaj saw eye to eye. The Black Eyed Peas artist recently announced his newest radio show called will.i.am Presents the FYI Show, with a computer-generated co-host named qd.pi (cutie pie). Premiering on SiriusXM, the show will feature in-depth conversations about music, culture, and technology.

Will.i.am states, “I didn’t want to just do a traditional show, I wanted to bring tomorrow close to today, and so I wanted to have my co-host be an AI. I’m ultra-freaking colorful and expressive. [qd.pi is] ultra-freaking factual and analytical. And that combination, we ain’t seen in the history of freaking broadcasts anywhere.”

Most of the goods and services West plans to use the words for are in relation to interior/logo design. Interestingly though, he also named “Cloud seeding,” “Graphoanalysis,” “exploration services in the field of the oil, gas, and mining industries,” and “biological cloning” as areas of interest.

DMX AI Tracks Earn Fan Backlash

Fans have protested after news broke alleging that DMX’s record label, Cleopatra Records, released a number of songs using AI to recreate the late rapper’s vocals. “Silent Night”, “Halloween From Miami To LA”, and “Long Live X” were all released in September and October. All three tracks appear to include heavily edited or AI-enhanced vocals of the rapper who died in 2021. “DMX’s label is releasing new DMX songs made with AI on Spotify… bro this is so disrespectful, especially when the artist isnt even alive anymore. Its Not even good AI. you can tell its not DMX,” one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Cleopatra Records had previously released Exodus as a posthumous album a month after DMX’s death. Furthermore, Swizz Beatz had alluded to the possibility of a second posthumous release, given the sheer amount of unreleased content DMX left behind. However, that second release has yet to come and now the record label is scrambling to retain fans after their adventure in AI. However, at this time, Cleopatra Records has not yet issued a statement about the releases and whether they do in fact use AI.

It’s been a big year for AI music, with the technology recently being used to release the “last-ever new Beatles song”. However, it’s use remains heavily debated and highly controversial. Mike Tyson called an AI 2Pac and Biggie track “f-cked up”. Meanwhile, Khalid told TMZ earlier this year that he saw the potential benefits of AI but was afraid of what it meant for human performers.

However, the technology does have its advocates. Speaking with TMZ, JoJo called AI music technology “interesting” and argued that it could be used for “harmonies and backgrounds”. Additionally, she said that the use of the technology was inevitable and the music industry shouldn’t wait too long to embrace it. As mentioned, the debate is not going to end anytime soon.

Before climbing the charts to reach the level of superstardom he’s at now, the Uncut Gems actor went viral for putting a unique spin on Drizzy’s “Trust Issues.” It’s been over 12 years since the track first surfaced online, and today (December 18), it finally appeared on Tesfaye’s Spotify profile. While fans were excited to see the beloved single available for listening, we now know it wasn’t the 33-year-old’s intention to release it.

A tweet from @dawnfm103_5 was reposted by Abel this afternoon, noting that his streaming account was compromised. “‘Trust Issues’ is NOT an official release!” they wrote. “The Weeknd’s Spotify account was hacked and the hacker released the song ‘Trust Issues’” they reiterated. At the time of publication, the Drake cover is no longer on Spotify, though you can still find it elsewhere online.

Even without “Trust Issues” being available on DSPs, it was an impressive year for The Weeknd. His listeners helped to rack up over 12 billion streams on Spotify alone, with even more coming in thanks to others like Apple Music and YouTube. “I wouldn’t care. I think to say ‘no’ would be selfish.
