Lana Del Rey’s Hip-Hop Connection Is Much Deeper Than Quavo

Today (July 3), Lana Del Rey linked up with Quavo to drop “Tough,” a new collaborative single. Del Rey — who is best known for ethereal, Americana-inspired music that typically has little to do with rap — doesn’t exactly live and breathe hip-hop. At least, that’s what you might believe if you haven’t been paying attention.

Yes, she usually collaborates with artists like Taylor Swift and Father John Misty, but the truth is that hip-hop has been an undercurrent of Del Rey’s career since pretty much the very start. To drive that point home, let’s go through a few highlights that illustrate Del Rey’s long-running connection to hip-hop.

2012 — “National Anthem”

The world met Del Rey on her debut major-label album, 2012’s Born To Die. The project spawned a number of singles, the most relevant one here being “National Anthem”: In the video, she plays Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy, while she recruited ASAP Rocky to portray John F. Kennedy.

2015 — “Art Deco”

It was rumored that this song was about Azealia Banks, but Del Rey herself shut that narrative down, saying in an interview, “Definitely not. I have no idea where people got that from. I just don’t know what the correlation is. That song is actually about a group of teenagers who go out every night.”

That didn’t stop the two from getting into a Twitter spat in 2018, though, during which Del Rey showed her teeth: She invited Banks to “pull up” and declared, “I won’t not f*ck you the f*ck up.”

2017 — ASAP Rocky

Del Rey reunited with her “National Anthem” co-star on a couple of occasions in 2017: Rocky featured on “Summer Bummer” (as did Playboi Carti) and “Groupie Love” from the Lust For Life album.

2021 — Chemtrails Over The Country Club

When Del Rey revealed the album’s cover in 2021, she received some push-back over the apparent lack of racial variety among the people featured in the art. In response, she wrote in part on social media, “My best friends are rappers, my boyfriends have been rappers…. My dearest friends have been from all over the place, so before you make comments again about a WOC/POC issue, I’m not the one storming the capital, I’m literally changing the world by putting my life and thoughts and love out there on the table 24 seven. Respect it.”

(Per Harper’s Bazaar, Del Rey’s dating history includes G-Eazy; He’s the only rapper listed, but perhaps Del Rey has had some other relationships go under the radar.)

2021 — Migos

Del Rey manifested her Quavo collab in 2021 when she named Migos as the artist she’d most like to work with, saying, “I love them. Everything they do. There was kind of like a new revolution of sound 11 years ago in the singer-songwriter community, which I loved seeing. And then with Migos, I think they kicked off a new super fun, super autobiographical, completely different style of rap. I love them.”

2024 — Sexyy Red

Lana got in a good hang with Sexyy Red at this year’s Hangout Festival: The two made some waves online with their joint twerk session.

2024 — Quavo

Del Rey and Quavo were at the center of some dating rumors a few months ago, but Quavo explained, “We having hits,” ultimately teeing up their new song and bringing this timeline to an end.

Sexyy Red & Chief Keef Hit The BET Awards Together After Kayla B Tweets About Sosa

Sexyy Red and Chief Keef sat right next to each other at the BET Awards, for which the former had a couple of performances to offer over the weekend. Moreover, this was a particularly interesting development for fans considering that Sexyy recently fought over Sosa with Kayla B, King Von’s sister who also claims to be in a close relationship with him. In fact, she tweeted about him right before the awards show: “[crying-laughing emoji] my man on his way 2 the B.E.T. awards looking like a Chicago rich [ninja emoji] [heart-eyes cat emoji] [crying emoji].” It seems like this whole saga might not be over yet, and we all might just be biting the bait.

Furthermore, a lot of folks assumed that this conflict between Sexyy Red, Kayla B, and Chief Keef was a promotional stunt for Sexyy and Keef’s new music video for “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad).” With this new development, this puts that interpretation under a bit more scrutiny, as it seems like they should’ve let it go already. Still, maybe there’s a delayed kick on this promo campaign for a close, or they got more than they bargained for. Nevertheless, it’s not like any party involved is claiming a really committed and exclusive thing… I mean, the two rappers are practically pretending to diss each other on “F My Baby Dad.”

Sexyy Red & Chief Keef Might’ve Unwittingly Trolled Kayla B’s Latest Tweet At BET Awards

No matter what’s going on with Sexyy Red, Chief Keef, and Kayla B, we’re sure that it’s all good news for all of their promo cycles and next moves. The St. Louis MC, for example, lit up the stage at the BET Awards last night with her main performance after doing so at their Experience showcase previously. A lot of this drama hasn’t stopped some fire singles and visuals from dropping; in fact, that’s what many think it’s for. Shocker…

Jokes aside, we’ll see whether any other big updates emerge from this saga. Sexyy Red, much like Chief Keef and Kayla B, has bigger fish to fry right now, most likely. At least legends like MC Lyte are there to defend her against her haters. Not that Sexyy needs it or anything, but if life is all about a balance, then this is a worthy counter to the prudes.

Sexyy Red Twerked In Front Of The White House For Her 2024 BET Awards Performance Medley

It’s election season, and while the last presidential debate didn’t exactly inspire confidence, Sexyy Red threw her hat in the ring with her 2024 BET Awards performance.

Sexyy kicked things off with with “U My Everything” before a hard pivot into a massive White House-themed set, to shift into “Get It Sexyy,” complete with Secret Service-looking backing dancers. The performance ended, as all good ones should, with Sexyy twerking in front of the White House.

Sexyy Red has been taking advantage of election season by going politically themed with her latest output, like with her patriotic new video for “Bow Wow Wow (F My Baby Dad).” She also made her WWE NXT debut recently and twerked up a storm while doing so. She even made an unexpected cameo appearance at, of all places, Zach Bryan’s tour.

Sexyy is one of the night’s leading nominees, with five total nods. Her, Drake, and SZA’s “Rich Baby Daddy” is up for Best Collaboration; she’s up for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist; and “Rich Baby Daddy” is also up for Video Of The Year and the Viewer’s Choice Award.

MC Lyte Thinks Sexyy Red Gets Too Much Hate For Her Lewd Music

Sexyy Red’s superstardom rose alongside a lot of criticism over her raunchy content and presentation, which has sadly never been an uncommon reaction to femcees. One of the most legendary female rappers of all time, MC Lyte, recently reflected on this history during an interview with The Neighborhood Talk at BET‘s Media House ahead of their awards show this Sunday (June 30). However, it’s important to note that her comments on the St. Louis MC don’t really seek to answer the question of whether or not this should be an approach that women in hip-hop continue to engage with. Rather, it calls out double standards and a lack of historical context and knowledge that leads to unjust vilification.

“Nothing that we see is really new,” MC Lyte’s remarks on Sexyy Red began. “And so, you know, we’ve all lived through the advent of ‘My Neck, My Back.’ Trina, Kim, Foxy… You know, so we lived that. So nothing surprises us, I don’t think. As an artist, as a creator, everyone’s always pushing the limits and the boundaries. But also, she didn’t pop out of a planet. She came from a neighborhood where this is how they speak to one another, this is how they communicate. And so this is definitely art imitating life. I think it’s important for people to know that it appears to me that she’s being herself. Whenever you’re being yourself, how can anybody argue with that?”

MC Lyte’s Thoughts On Sexyy Red

Of course, we know that MC Lyte herself isn’t immune to lewd and controversial content. In fact, her comments about age gaps back in the day probably would get much more flack today than anything that Sexyy Red is doing in particular. But context is everything, and time heals all -– well, most wounds. Who knows how folks would’ve reacted to “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)” back in 1991?

Meanwhile, MC Lyte also came to the defense of other rappers like LL Cool J and even President Joe Biden when it comes to their public perception. When Biden called LL “boy,” it sparked a debate around the connotations of the word. Like a lot of other people online, Lyte didn’t find it to be a big deal and instead opted for empathy and forgiveness. We’ll see how this Sexyy Red take ages in comparison.

Sexyy Red and Chief Keef Drop Anticipated Video for “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)”

Sexyy Red and Chief Keef Drop Anticipated Video for "Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)"

Sexyy Red and Chief Keef have released the highly-anticipated video for their collaboration “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad),” a standout track from Sexyy’s acclaimed Hood Hottest Princess (Deluxe) project. Known for her advocacy for her child’s father, Sexyy takes a new approach in this track, encouraging mothers everywhere to leave their “hating a**” baby daddies and enjoy themselves. Chief Keef mirrors Sexyy’s energy, expressing similar disdain for his baby mama.

Directed by NSTY, the video features Sexyy and Chief Keef heading to “The Corry Show,” a playful spin on the infamous Maury Povich show, to prove that Keef is her baby daddy.

The video also marks the beginning of Sexyy’s new era as the hood’s hottest presidential candidate. The intro shows Sexyy informing constituents of her #MakeAmericaSexyyAgain campaign platform, promising enticing policies like free food stamps.

Sexyy recently announced her upcoming “Sexyy Red 4 President Tour,” a 26-city tour with support from Hunxho, Loe Shimmy, BlakeIANA, and a surprise special guest. The tour continues Sexyy’s streak of buzzworthy performances at Governor’s Ball and Roots Picnic, along with upcoming international festival appearances at Wireless Festival, Rokslide, Rolling Loud Europe, and more.

The tour follows the release of Sexyy’s In Sexyy We Trust mixtape, the follow-up to her 2023 debut Hood Hottest Princess, which includes the Billboard top 20 hit “Get It Sexyy” and the top 50 love anthem “U My Everything” ft. Drake. If you’ve never been to a Sexyy Red show, it’s a must-add to your summer bucket list, with crowds expected to twerk on top of their seats to “SkeeYee” and “Get It Sexyy!”

Earlier this week, Chief Keef, Sexyy Red, and King Von’s sister Kayla B made one big love triangle.

Sexyy Red hit social media, seemingly confirming she was romantically involved with Chief Keef, showing off his chain, including putting it in her underwear. “We got together now,” she wrote, tagging Keef. Keef and Red have become frequent collaborators.

In response, Kayla shared images with Sosa, and kicking off the drama, which Red responded “How I taste?”

The two then shared images of moments with Chief Keef, seemingly right after each other as he was in the same clothes. Kayla B also shared intimate moments with Keef writing, “First one to get pregnant wins.”

Sexyy Red Taps Chief Keef For A Presidential “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)” Music Video: Watch

The 2024 United States presidential election is coming up this November, and after last night’s (Thursday, June 27) debate between hopefuls Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the culture is looking to a new candidate to save the nation. Just wait until she finishes her Maury parody run. Sexyy Red, Ms. “Make America Sexyy Again” herself, just released the music video for the Chief Keef-remixed “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad).” In it, she engages with her presidential campaign with a comical ad at the start before hopping on a reality show to see if Sosa is truly the father of her child.

Furthermore, it’s about as wild, raunchy, and ridiculous of a mix as it sounds on paper, and the visuals are all the better for it. It’s a pretty funny and entertaining watch, and one that apparently proved that previous drama concerning Sexyy Red and Chief Keef was all a promotional stunt. For those unaware, the former had a social media spat with Kayla B, King Von’s sister, and fought with her over the Almighty So 2 rapper. While we’re not ruling out that some tension actually went down, it’s a very private affair that they seemed to play up for the Internet and to get some buzz around this new release.

Elsewhere, Sexyy Red continues to rally against her detractors for many different reasons, many of which concern her image and her visibility. Even though the problems we can attribute to any one artist are universal issues, this doesn’t stop folks from unfairly singling out their chosen scapegoats. For example, she recently dismissed a viral rant about how she supposedly has a “detrimental” impact on the Black community. Sometimes, criticism is called out as hating from a mile away, although there’s almost always some truth to it.

But that’s not concerning Sexyy Red on her way to hip-hop’s highest echelons, despite some understandable concerns with her previous Trump endorsement. We can’t wait for the next hit to receive a visual treatment, and to see how much farther this style will go. If it’s quality, we’re all for it. After all, there’s an art to raunchiness that too many people today just can’t seem to grasp.

Sexyy Red’s Surprisingly Patriotic ‘F My Baby Dad’ Video With Chief Keef Continues Her Campaign To ‘Make America Sexyy Again’

Sexyy Red wants your vote in her long-awaited video for “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)” with Chief Keef. It IS an election year, after all, and Big Sexyy takes advantage of the convenient timing to continue her campaign to “Make America Sexyy Again” with a campaign ad opening the video, advertising “F My Baby Dad” booty shorts and making some outlandish promises like “free food stamps,” “child support,” and “switches for the Glocks.” Never change, Sexyy. Never change.

Midway through the video, the previously teased Maury homage, Corry, kicks in, with interviews from Sexyy and Keef, who is accused of being the baby daddy in question. The lower thirds are absolutely hilarious throughout Keef’s verse, wondering if the results can be revealed as long as he keeps rapping and cheering Sexyy on as she gyrates across the stage — and on Keef’s lap.

Despite borrowing Donald Trump’s catchphrase for her album rollout, Sexyy distanced herself from the controversial businessman-turned-politician in response to some backlash online. “It’s Sexyy Red 4 President,” she told fans on Twitter. “I’m my own candidate I’m not endorsing anybody period.” However, that would appear to contradict her earlier (possibly facetious) statement about how much the hood loves Trump.

Sexyy Red Teased The Long-Awaited Release Of Her ‘F My Baby Dad’ Video With A Hilarious ‘Maury’-Inspired Trailer

Sexyy Red’s run of ratchet excellence continues with a Maury-inspired teaser for the long-awaited video for her fan-favorite single “Bow Bow Bow” — better known as “F My Baby Dad.” For those of you too young to have caught the lowbrow classic daytime talk show while staying home sick from school, host Maury Povich would often have guests on the show with paternity disputes that the show would then “resolve” (with a disclaimer protecting the show from any liability for false positives) with Povich’s signature catchphrase “you are/are not the baby’s father.”

The whole thing was equal parts hilariously entertaining and depressingly gross, making a spectacle of desperate, low-income people for their lack of “class” and decorum — basically a precursor for today’s more slickly presented modern reality TV. What can I say, it was the ’90s.

With that being said, Sexyy Red knows her audience and owns the characterization with tongue firmly in cheek, presenting the song’s guest feature Chief Keef (with whom she’s been rumored to be having a fling) as the dirtbag potential baby daddy. She even jokes that “I’m pregnant rn” in a tweet sharing the teaser, which … seems unlikely, but isn’t out of the realm of possibility, considering she just had her second child and isn’t shy about her (ahem) proclivities.

You can watch the “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)” video teaser below.
