Saturday Night Live is obviously a pillar of the comedy community, but it has also played host to many moments in music history thanks to its long-running tradition of musical guests. SNL is going hard celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, and now Questlove has joined the effort: It was announced today (December 19) that he has co-directed a documentary alongside Oz Rodriguez, dubbed Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years Of SNL Music.

Questlove says in a statement, “Everyone knows the most famous SNL appearances, whether it’s Elvis Costello or Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they’re the tip of a huge iceberg. The process of going back through the incredible archival footage was like being in a time machine, DeLorean or other. I’m so happy I went on the trip and happy I now get to share it with everyone.”

Just about everybody was interviewed for the doc: Per a press release, that includes Bad Bunny, DJ Breakout, Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish & Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Tom Morello, Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, MC Sha-Rock, Paul Simon, Chris Stapleton, Justin Timberlake, Lee Ving, and Jack White.

And that’s just the musicians: Also involved are Lorne Michaels, Fred Armisen, Conan O’Brien, Eli Brueggemann, Jane Curtin, Jimmy Fallon, Al Franken, Josiah Gluck, Bill Hader, Steve Higgins, Marci Klein, Melanie Malone, Tom Malone, Mary Ellen Matthews, Eddie Murphy, Ego Nwodim, Liz Patrick, Leon Pendarvis, Lenny Pickett, Joe Piscopo, Andy Samberg, Brian Siedlecki, Akiva Schaffer, Paul Shaffer, Sarah Sherman, Howard Shore, Robert Smigel, Jorma Taccone, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudolph, Hal Willner, and Bowen Yang.

Diddy Allegedly Acted Like A “Jerk” During “SNL” Appearance

Diddy allegedly acted like a “jerk” while appearing on Saturday Night Live in 1998, according to former cast member Ana Gasteyer. Gasteyer recalled meeting the Bad Boy mogul during a recent interview on the Las Culturistas podcast with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. She explained that Diddy requested the studio be on lockdown as he rehearsed his single, “Come With Me,” featuring a sample from the iconic Led Zeppelin song, “Kashmir.”

“You can spot the five jerks in my six years there [from 1996 to 2002]. They’d come in, and suddenly it’d be, ‘So-and-so is in the building, everyone stay in your dressing rooms,’” Gasteyer said on the show. “It makes sense for a president, but otherwise? No. This is our house. For P. Diddy, he demanded a totally closed set.”

She explained that Will Ferrell then decided to dress up as a character named Ron to lighten the mood. “I have video from the control room,” Gasteyer recalled. “Sean Combs is rapping, with that ‘da-na-na, da-na-na’ Kashmir riff, and here comes Ron wandering around looking totally lost. It’s the best thing ever because, honestly, imagine interrupting Combs—a guy whose whole image was built on exaggerated importance—with Ron. (Combs) was absolutely uncomfortable, but it was so perfect. It exposed how overblown all of the seriousness was.” Ferrell previously recalled the incident during an interview with Vulture in 2020.

Ana Gasteyer Recalls Diddy’s “Saturday Night Live” Appearance

Gasteyer’s comments come as Diddy remains behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while awaiting trial on charges of alleged sex trafficking and racketeering. He’s pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations. Check out Ana Gasteyer’s full appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast below.

Matty Healy Shoots Back At Azealia Banks For Fiery Criticism Of Charli XCX

Matty Healy fired back at Azealia Banks on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday afternoon after she criticized Charli XCX’s performance on Saturday Night Live. Reacting to a clip of Charli performing her hit Brat single, “360,” Banks accused her of making a “lazy” interpolation of Ciara’s “1, 2 Step.” Healy’s 1975 bandmate, George Daniel, is currently engaged to Charli.

“I legit just a caught how this song a lazy artist studio interpolation of Ciara’s 1,2 step. First off, nobody even know or cares about aj cook enough her to be riding Ciara’s ‘This beat is Outrageous, so contagious, make you crave it Jazze made it (Ha!),’” Banks wrote. “… I guess brat is when nobody has to tell u ur trash because u already know ur trash. This actually gets worse and worse.” In response to the post, Healy wrote back: “Shut up you f*cking prat,” with a laughing emoji. “Being more annoying than me is actually impressive.”

It’s not the first time Healy and Banks have traded shots on social media. Last year, the “212” hitmaker called Healy out after his viral comments about Ice Spice. “Does Matty Healy know that no one actually thinks The 1975 makes good music?” she asked her followers on Instagram at the time. “And that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing. He’s clearly so pressed about a Black girl who knows nothing about him or his music is making more moves and money than him.”

Matty Healy Fires Back At Azealia Banks

Elsewhere during the latest SNL episode, Charli performed one of her other Brat singles, “Sympathy is a knife.” Check out Healy’s latest response to Azealia Banks below.

Matty Healy Has Some Harsh Words For Azealia Banks After She Calls Charli XCX’s ‘SNL’ Performance ‘Trash’

Azealia Banks was not a fan of Charli XCX’s dual role as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. “I legit just a caught how this song a lazy artist studio interpolation of Ciara’s 1,2 step,” Banks wrote on X (formerly Twitter) about her performance of “360.” After accusing Charli of having “flow just without the swag,” she continued, “I guess brat is when nobody has to tell u ur trash because u already know ur trash. This actually gets worse and worse.”

The “rantings of a lunatic” (as Banks describes herself) caught the attention of Matty Healy, whose 1975 bandmate, George Daniel, is engaged to Charli. “Shut up you f*cking prat,” he wrote in response. In a follow-up tweet, Healy added, “Being more annoying than me is actually impressive.”

This isn’t the first time Banks and Healy have sparred. She called him a “full incel” while he was rumored to be dating Taylor Swift. “Taylor, this guy is gonna give you scabies. He’s not on the level of powerful p*ss you worked hella hard to build. Ugh, so many much cooler people in music to work with,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “You cannot be letting him climb the rich white coochie mountain, sis.” In a separate incident, Banks also advised Healy to eat “a strong green salad” and “wash [his] d*ck.”

Diddy Faces Ruthless Jokes From “Saturday Night Live”

Michael Che and Colin Jost took aim at Diddy during the latest episode of Saturday Night Live. In doing so, the two comedians poked fun at the number of allegations made against the Bad Boy mogul in the wake of his arrest in New York City, last month. Authorities have charged him with alleged sex trafficking and racketeering. He’s already pleaded not guilty to the alleged crimes.

Che kicked things off during the “Weekend Update” segment. “It was reported that the U.S. added 245,000 new jobs. Unfortunately, they were all ‘Diddy accusers,’” he joked. “It was announced that Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs’ sex trafficking case has been assigned to a new judge. One that Diddy hopes is cool with rapes.” From there, Jost joined in on the jokes. “It was reported that Diddy once invited Prince Harry and Prince William to one of his parties, but they did not go,” he said. “Although before Diddy could even finish writing the invite, Prince Andrew was there.”

Attorney Tony Buzbee Announces Allegations Against Diddy

The day after the Saturday Night Live episode aired, Diddy’s mother, Janice Combs, broke her silence on her son’s arrest. In a statement provided to Local 10 News, she wrote: “It is heartbreaking to see my son judged not for the truth, but for a narrative created out of lies. To bear witness to what seems like a public lynching of my son before he has had the opportunity to prove his innocence is a pain too unbearable to put into words. Like every human being, my son deserves to have his day in court, to finally share his side, and to prove his innocence.” Her son is currently residing at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while awaiting trial.

Michael Che And Kendrick Lamar Might’ve Been Pushed Into A Beef Following The ‘SNL’ Weekend Update’s ‘Joke Swap’

Kendrick Lamar is the self-proclaimed Boogeyman of rap, but does that extend to the comedian space. While the “Not Like Us” rapper’s feud with Drake is officially over, yesterday (May 17) his next foe might have stepped up to the plate during Saturday Night Live‘s season finale.

To go out with a bang, Colin Jost used the beloved ‘Weekend Update’ segment’s joke swap to rile things up for his co-anchor, Michael Che. As the duo traded off-kilter and at times outright insensitive lines, Che unknowingly walked directly into a potential feud with Kendrick while discussing the rapper’s recent war of words.

“And speaking of b*tches, I wanna call out the biggest b*tches of them all, Kendrick Lamar,” he joked. “Or should I say littlest? Your war with Drake may be over. But your war with Michael Che is just beginning. So, to quote ‘Hamilton,’ shoot your shot player.”

Based on Che’s hesitation to read the script, it is clear Che has kept up with Kendrick’s lethal lines. Although he didn’t want to poke the bear, seemingly out of fear of Kendrick’s reaction, Che was a good sport and powered through the hilarious callout. He then took a moment to praise Jost for the clever setup. “That was pretty well done,” he laughed.

Jake Gyllenhaal And The ‘SNL’ Cast Said Goodbye To Season 49 In Pure ’90s R&B Fashion

49 is big number. Tonight (May 18), Saturday Night Live closed out its 49th season with a bang. Though finishing 49 seasons is a huge milestone, tonight’s host Jake Gyllenhaal was seemingly hoping to be in the running to host the premiere of season 50, which will take place later this year.

But of course, Gyllenhaal was determined to make this finale special. Near the end of his opening monologue, Gyllenhaal broke out into song — a special rework of Boyz II Men‘s ’90s classic, “End Of The Road.”

During his cover, Gyllenhaal surprised the audience with his pipes, delivering strong vocals as he hilariously jokes that Pedro Pascal and Ryan Gosling were asked to host this episode before him (even though they have both previously hosted this past season).

While Gyllenhaal was captivating the audience with his singing, a few of the cast members elevated the performance.

Punkie Johnson, Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, and Devon Walker joined in, giving the song additional harmonies, taking it to the next level.

Although a hosting slot for the season 50 premiere of SNL is highly coveted, the quality of this opening monologue is going to be hard to match.

You can watch Gyllenhaal’s full opening monologue above.

Maya Rudolph As Beyoncé Couldn’t Handle The Southern Heat In A Hilarious ‘Hot Ones’ Parody On ‘SNL’

Beyoncé can do it all — singing, dancing, acting, and recently, launching a haircare brand. And even though she carries hot sauce in her bag — as she noted on her 2016 hit single “Formation” — it’s possible that even she can’t handle the spice level of the wings on Hot Ones. In a Saturday Night Live sketch tonight (May 10), Mikey Day played Hot Ones host Sean Evans in a parody of the iconic YouTube show. Joining Day was tonight’s (May 11) host, Rudolph, as the one-and-only Beyoncé.

Hot off the release of her latest album, Cowboy Carter, Rudolph’s Beyoncé reminds us that she’s a southern country queen. But the flavor and heat of the wings proves to be too much — even for the Queen Bey.

Rudolph’s Beyoncé takes to the first few wings pretty well. But by the time she tries the “Sergeant Sphincter’s Volcanpeño sauce, with a Scoville rating of 530,000,” she appears to meet her match.

“This wing is stompin’ my ass,” she said. “Damn, my bones are hot. That wing was a real one.”

But thanks to the help of Bey’s loyal assistant, De’Raphael (Kenan Thompson), the world, perhaps, might never see Beyoncé in this rather humbling scenario.

You can watch the sketch above.

Even Dua Lipa Couldn’t Resist Breaking Down The Drake And Kendrick Lamar Feud During An ‘SNL’ Sketch

Dua Lipa‘s third album Radical Optimism is finally here. But while this weekend is huge for her, she — like most of us — can’t help but get invested in Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s ongoing beef.

In a Saturday Night Live sketch, Lipa plays a culture reporter on a fictional talk show hosted by Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner. Though the hosts are clueless about the beef, Lipa helps by offering some informational tidbits.

“One clue on the song ‘Euphoria,’ when Kendrick describes Drake as Canadian, that’s because Drake is from Toronto,” said Lipa.

While this piece of information is rather obvious, Lipa continued, explaining one of the names Lamar calls Drake on the song.

“And he calls Drake ‘Crodie,’ which is a term used by the Crips,” said Lipa, “which according to Wikipedia is an alliance of street gangs based in Southern California.”

Lipa also touched on one of Drake’s diss records, “Taylor Made Freestyle,” on which, he used artificial intelligence to emulate Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur’s rap stylings. This particular song wasn’t well-received, and could potentially end Drake up in legal trouble.

“Drake is being sued by Tupac’s estate for using an AI version of his voice,” said Lipa.

Day and Gardner continue the sketch, imitating Drake and Lamar — but as one can imagine, it doesn’t end well.

You can see the sketch above.

Caitlin Clark Joins “SNL” To Troll Michael Che For Jokes About Women’s Basketball

Caitlin Clark made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, this weekend, joining Colin Jost and Michael Che for the “Weekend Update” segment. In doing so, she trolled Che for the jokes he’s made about women’s basketball over the years. She instructed Che to read from a list of jokes she had prepared for the show, which all poked fun at the comedian.

“This year, Caitlin Clark broke the record for 3-pointers in a single season and I have 3-pointers for Michael Che,” he said. “One, be. Two, funnier. Three, dumbass.” She finished the segment by giving a shoutout to “Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, the great Dawn Staley, and my basketball hero, Maya Moore.” She added: “These are the women that kicked down the door so I could walk inside. So, I want to thank them tonight for laying the foundation.”
