It’s been a great couple of weeks for Kendrick Lamar fans, as the rapper just unleashed his new album, GNX. The project arrived with zero notice and has since earned mostly positive reactions. On top of this, Drake recently decided to take legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG), resulting in a great deal of clowning for the Toronto artist and his die-hard supporters.
Recently, however, Adam22 turned the tables by roasting his own security guard. In a clip, the guard is seen sporting a pgLang hat and getting ripped to shreds for it. “Yo, you know you’re not just gonna come around with a pgLang hat on without us cooking you right? Kendrick head ass,” the No Jumper host said before bursting into laughter. Luckily, the security guard was able to laugh along with the internet personality, indicating that he wasn’t too upset by his clowning.
This clip arrives shortly after Adam22 defended Drake after he threatened UMG with a lawsuit. In a legal filing, Drake accuses the label and Spotify of artificially boosting Kendrick’s diss track “Not Like Us.” He also accuses the label of defamation, alleging that they could have stopped the release of the song, in which Kendrick “falsely [accuses] him of being a sex offender.”
“UMG … could have refused to release or distribute the song or required the offending material to be edited and/or removed,” the lawsuit alleges, per Billboard. “But UMG chose to do the opposite.” According to Adam22, Drake might actually be onto something. In a tweet posted earlier this week, he argued that Drake could end up being praised for exposing alleged corruption depending on what direction the legal battle ends up going in. “Anyone acting like Drake is just a bad loser hasn’t read this sh*t yet,” he wrote. “If half of this gets proven, Drake will look like a hero for exposing the corrupt music industry.”
Kendrick Lamar’s GNX album is projected to be the biggest release in 2024 with his anticipated track, “squabble up,” leading the way. The song, originally teased in July, is on pace to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hip-Hop charts. It has already topped the Apple and Spotify charts after Lamar released the album on Friday (Nov. 22). The song was teased at the beginning of the music video for Lamar’s Grammy-nominated hit “Not Like Us.” Fans couldn’t get enough of rapping the song’s intro verse, “Woke up looking for the broccoli.”
“Squabble Up” has accumulated over 3.2 million views on YouTube and over 14 million streams on Spotify. The song samples Debbie Deb’s 80s classic “When I Hear Music.” The legendary singer would comment on Lamar’s use of the classic on Friday. She tweeted, “I’m excited and honored to be on Squabble Up! Thank you @kendricklamar for keeping Old Skool alive!.” The iconic sample joins others like Luther Vandross’ “This World Was Mine” and 2Pac’s “Made N***as.”
Despite “squabble up” taking center stage, the buzz around the album shows no signs of waning. The album is receiving widespread acclaim for its bold themes and incisive lyricism. The conversations it has ignited—both within the music industry and beyond—demonstrate Lamar’s extraordinary talent for provoking thought and stirring emotion, one line at a time. Lamar’s release follows a huge year for Top Dawg Entertainment that saw the release of new music by Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Doechii.
In a single day, GNX accumulated over 44 million streams on Spotify. The addition of “wacced out murals” and “squabble up” has earned Lamar a record-breaking five #1 hits in 2024. The streak began with “Like That,” Kendrick earned #1 hits with “Not Like Us” and “Euphoria.” “Not Like Us” received seven Grammy nominations for the 58th award. The Grammy-nominated hit united Los Angeles hip-hop in July at the iconic Pop-Out concert.
This weekend, Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album, GNX, has been the only music topic. Since its release on Friday morning (Nov. 22), both Apple Music and Spotify have charted all 12 songs. NFR Podcast shared a screenshot of both charts on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday (Nov. 24). “Squabble Up,” originally previewed in July, sits at the top of both charts. After that, both charts have mixed rankings of the tracklist, with “wacced out murals” being #2 on Apple and “luther,” featuring SZA, at #2 on Spotify.
GNX is believed to have the biggest first-week sales in 2024, which will be revealed in a week. The album adds to Kendrick Lamar’s massive year with hit songs “Not Like Us” and “Euphoria” breaking several records. Both tracks were submitted for Grammy nominations with “Not Like Us” earning seven nominations. While “wacced out murals” was teased in the music video, “Not Like Us” and “Euphoria” do not appear on GNX. Another Mustard-produced track appears on the new album after the two delivered “Not Like Us.”
Kendrick Lamar’s Surprise Album Dominates The Charts
The first official release on his PgLang imprint, Lamar unites Los Angeles hip-hop once again with features by emerging stars Lefty Gunplay, Wallie The Sensei, Hitta J3, Peysoh, and Roddy Ricch. The album is produced by longtime Lamar producer Soundwav and Taylor Swift producer Jack Antonoff. SZA and Lamar duet on a few tracks, including the fan favorite “luther.” SZA’s past collaborations with Lamar include the chart-topping hit “All The Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack.
Lamar’s latest release has created many social media trends outside the charts. Yelling “Mustard on “tv off” has created a season of memes that include McDonald’s “honey mustard” tweet. Fan-made videos have used the popular line using classic moments from various pop culture shows such as Dragonball Z, Boondocks, Peanuts, and more. As a result of the new fanfare, Mustard has been resharing all the content on his social media accounts.
Back in 2022, Tanna Leone was signed to pgLang where he immediately made an impact. He came through with some new music as an introduction before being featured on the song “Mr. Morale” from Kendrick Lamar’s album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Unfortunately, Leone’s relationship with pgLang has not proven to be a lengthy or fruitful one. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Leone was no longer signed to pgLang. There was no reasoning given for this, so fans have been left to speculate.
Regardless, Leone is still out here making new music which is certainly good news for all of the fans out there. Recently, Leone blessed fans with a new song called “Stuntman” which is supposed to come off of his upcoming album. As you will hear, this song is short but it is certainly effective as we hear numerous different flows from Leone. Furthermore, the production is bombastic and energetic, making this an undeniable banger.
When it comes to new artists, you want their art to be filled with personality. There needs to be something there for fans to latch onto so that they can keep coming back for future releases. This is definitely something Leone’s music has and it is why fans continue to look forward to whatever he has on the horizon. Hopefully, we get a new album, very soon.
When I got the goop it was stepped on (Yeah, yeah) So I decided I’ma stick to the weed (Yeah, yeah) Couple of my dawgs threw me plays When I got back in the game That’s the type of face card that you need (Yeah, yeah) Stay down till you take off in a jet on they ass
Cash App has launched the latest phase of its financial literacy brand campaign “That’s Money” in collaboration with project3, pgLang’s in-house creative agency. The new video, titled “The Barbershop,” stars rapper and singer Doechii alongside comedian ExavierTV and is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Calmatic.
“The Barbershop” emphasizes the importance of strategic self-investment and the sharing of financial lessons learned along the way. “I’m at a place now where I’m starting to make a budget and set financial goals for my future,” said Doechii. “I think it’s so important to be honest with each other when we talk about money, which is why I’m excited to be part of this campaign and share what’s been working for me.”
Calmatic expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “What I loved most about this project was the opportunity to essentially describe to the audience what ‘interest’ is in one of the most raw and straightforward ways I’ve ever seen in financial advertising. I wish I could’ve seen something like this when I was growing up. Thank you, project3 and Cash App, for trusting me.”
Launched in 2022, “That’s Money” aims to promote financial education and empowerment while highlighting how Cash App can streamline money management. A previous spot from the campaign, “The Balcony,” featured 17-time Grammy Award winner Kendrick Lamar and entrepreneur Ray Dalio, and won two Bronze Lions at the 2023 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. ExavierTV, who appeared in “The Balcony,” continues the narrative in “The Barbershop,” sharing the financial wisdom he gained from opening his own barbershop.
“Project3, the agency developed by pgLang, collaborated with Cash App to continue the storytelling that began in 2022 with ‘The Balcony,’” stated pgLang. “Appreciation to Calmatic for reapproaching this story with young entrepreneurs growing their businesses in an authentic tone.”
Catherine Ferdon, Cash App’s Chief Marketing Officer, added, “We wanted to show how financial wisdom can spread within communities through real, everyday conversations. With ‘That’s Money,’ we’re continuing to combine culture with financial literacy in a way that’s unique to our brand and makes people think about money differently.”
“The Barbershop” will be available across various formats, including digital video, Out of Home, and cinema, as well as on Cash App’s social channels. Another installment of “That’s Money” is slated to launch later this year.
Financial literacy has become a hot topic in the past few years; thanks to pandemics and recessions, it’s become more important than ever for average folks to learn to manage their money. Hip-hop, which has traditionally been all about flexing, has begun to play a bigger part in helping to educate the public, with Jay-Z and Megan Thee Stallion hosting classes and several artists releasing music related to the subject.
Kendrick Lamar’s PgLang has joined in, teaming up with Cash App to release a short film giving financial advice direct from TDE artist Doechii. The short, “The Barbershop,” sees comedian ExavierTV seeking advice from his barber and getting it instead from Doechii, who’s also in the shop getting her hair braided. Cash App’s ongoing “That’s Money” project aims to help teach hip-hop fans about money management skills. The short is directed by Calmatic, and continues threads from a prior film from “That’s Money” and PgLang’s Project3 initiative, “The Balcony,” which saw Kendrick himself offering up similar snippets.
“I’m at a place now where I’m starting to make a budget and set financial goals for my future,” Doechii said in the press release. “I think it’s so important to be honest with each other when we talk about money, which is why I’m excited to be part of this campaign and share what’s been working for me.”
It’s no secret that Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free have found serious success with their imprint pgLang, and now, Free has shared some of their valuable trade secrets. During a recent interview with Elephant, he detailed both their vision and recipe for success. He broke what he calls the company’s “No Yapping” policy in the process, though fans certainly can’t complain.
“We want to treat artists like they’re start-ups,” Free began. “We want them to take ownership of their brand, which is really taking ownership of themselves. You always hear people talking about all these elements of the business that they don’t like, but it’s not like there are a lot of active participants putting their money where their mouth is. We were like, ‘Let’s not talk about what we want to see from the industry — let’s just do it.’”
“Here’s the whole process,” he continued. “Kendrick or I will dream something up, although the idea could come from staff members too, and we’ll come into the office, and we’ll figure out how to create a system around the idea to make it self-sufficient. We make sure it’s going to be impactful, influential, financially stable, it’s going to shake people up, and it’s going to tell a story.”
“When it’s developed, we ask, ‘Does it move you?’ Eventually, after repeating that process enough times, we get to a place where we can’t poke any more holes,” Free also added. That’s what we call ‘break and repeat.’ Once there are no more holes to poke, I feel comfortable putting it into the universe. So that’s the process. We apply that to everything that we do.” What do you think of Dave Free opening up about his and Kendrick Lamar’s process and vision for their pgLang imprint? DJ Akademiks has been arguably the fieriest commentator amid the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, and his OVO repping keeps getting more and more heated. Moreover, he recently responded to shady Ab-Soul tweets and the general reception to the “Not Like Us” video, as well as rumors that either K.Dot or Drizzy are looking for a round two. Well, Ak has a pretty different perspective, accusing Kendrick’s camp of milking this beef and trying to bait The Boy into another response. This rant seemingly occurred during the same livestream in which he trolled artists for not having or getting Kendrick features despite their participation in The Pop Out show or the aforementioned music video.
“So my last thoughts on this is a pathetic attempt, I believe, by pgLang and TDE to try to bait Drake out,” DJ Akademiks remarked. “Talking about ‘redemption is not off the table.’ N***a, listen, call me the spokesperson for Drake or OVO, but I can tell you, n***a. Drake is gonna drop amazing music, it’s gonna be good. If you think he gon’ keep going back and forth with that n***a calling him a pedophile and lying, he’s not. So move on, hurry along, and y’all go drop y’all music. See you n***as on the f***ing charts. That’s it, okay? That’s it. There’s no more conversation, that’s it.”
DJ Akademiks Wants Kendrick Lamar To Stop “Milking” The Drake Beef
Of course, there are a lot of rumors around what Drake will drop next, with some like DJ Akademiks claiming that it won’t have anything to do with Kendrick Lamar and others anticipating more shots. We won’t really know until more new music comes out, but we doubt that the Toronto superstar wouldn’t have a subliminal bar or two over this situation in the future. As for his Compton rival, perhaps his supposed new album will focus more on the West Coast or on other topics that aren’t “Other Vaginal Option”-related. What are you betting on?
Meanwhile, even Siri is glitching out over this battle, and to see its crossovers into pop culture is a pretty comical and curious affair. DJ Akademiks doesn’t want this to keep progressing, but there are a whole lot of fans who say otherwise. We’ll see what sides of their duality these MCs choose to feed into. But what’s true is that on both sides, there are plenty of people who want to speak on behalf of these artists and dig the hole deeper down a combative path.
Following two months of dominating streaming platforms, Kendrick Lamar finally unveiled the music video for “Not Like Us,” on the 4th of July, no less. Let’s just say it’s a victory lap across the board, especially considering that some of the symbolism and shots aimed to debunk some of Drake’s major talking points across the beef. Nonetheless, the visuals of “Not Like Us” will undoubtedly extend its lifespan throughout the summer.
Directed by Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar, the music video comes on the heels of the Juneteenth concert at the Kia Forum where practically every Los Angeles rapper joined forces on stage for a moment of unity. The music video is another moment that exemplifies this effort. Plus, some of the symbolism across the visual will have you doubling back to catch some of the cryptic messages that you didn’t pick up on the first time around.
We were blessed enough to receive four new songs from Kendrick Lamar in the span of a few days. However, it seems like we might be fortunate enough to get even more music in the near future. Kicking off the “Not Like Us” video is a snippet of new music that we hope will be released soon.
“Beat Your Ass & Hide The Bible If God Watchin’”
Just a slick interpretation of the bar.
Tommy The Clown & The General Choreography
Tommy The Clown’s appearance embodied Los Angeles in a major way. A staple in West Coast culture as a whole, Tommy’s segment at the Pop Out was undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights. To have him basically help lead the music video felt like a nod to Los Angeles’ history, both in music and dance. Plus, the choreography and shots in that final verse added an lighthearted touch to such a vicious song.
Kendrick Playing Hop-Scotch
Considering the nature of the song and the allegations Kendrick made against Drake, the hop-scotch scene that aligns with the “A-Minor” line certainly isn’t a coincidence by any stretch.
Push Ups
Between the viral clip of Kendrick doing push-ups in Compton randomly with soul music playing in the background and Drake’s “Push Ups,” Kendrick has really been driving home the importance of calisthenic exercises. Plus, on “meet the grahams,” Kendrick also tells Adonis to “do some push-ups” instead of using Ozempic. Seems like the DAMN. rapper is trying to lead by example. However, considering the amount of Easter eggs we’re still uncovering from the beef two months later, this particular image could be referencing this TikTok that Drake did with a young fan last year. That’s just a guess.
Kendrick Lamar and Mustard bust a move in front of Compton staple, the legendary Tam’s Burger.
Demar Derozan Makes A Cameo
The former Raptors star also makes a cameo in the music video after joining Kendrick Lamar on stage at the Pop-Out. Clearly, his Compton pride takes center stage on this one but I would imagine that Raps fans are feeling a bit betrayed today.
Black Hippy reunites along with the Top Dawg Entertainment executives. Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q appeared on stage with Kendrick during the Pop Out concert in June.
Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” show continues to make waves in not only music but also in various communities across Los Angeles. For the performance, the Compton-born rapper was joined by several of his peers onstage, uniting artists from different backgrounds for a truly historic night. His impact didn’t stop there, however. It was recently revealed that he, pgLang, Tim Hinshaw’s Free Lunch, and other artists teamed up for a massive donation. Reportedly, they pooled together a whopping $200K, which will go toward multiple charities and community initiatives in the LA area.
“We haven’t seen this type of Unity on the West since we lost our brother Nipsey Hussle,” Hinshaw told Billboard. “As Dot said on stage, this moment was bigger than a back and forth; it was about supporting each other and showing the world that we could come together for a greater cause. All of these organizations play a pivotal role in the development of our community and the hope is that we all continue to support them moving forward.”
DJ Mustard also shared some heartfelt words with the outlet about the generous donation. “The Pop Out concert had a significant impact on the city, unifying West Coast hip-hop, providing a platform for emerging talent, celebrating Black culture, and revitalizing the local music scene,” he explained. “It garnered global attention but also allowed us artists to give back to different programs based around South L.A. and put L.A. back in the driver’s seat for music, something that’s been long overdue.”
