Melle Mel: “Blasphemy” Nicki Minaj Is Higher Than Rakim On Top Rappers List

As Melle Mel’s reactions filter in, we aren’t yet out from under a cloud of Billboard and Vibe‘s Top Greatest Rappers of All Time list. The Hip Hop icon has been a hot topic in Rap conversations following his appearance on The Art of Dialogue. The platform often talks with veteran artists and industry professionals, and often they weigh in on the current state of Hip Hop. Melle’s recent chat has caused a stir, especially as he shares thoughts on that controversial Top 50 list.

This clip of his interview opened by the Top 20 being reviewed. Rakim took the 13th spot, LL Cool J followed at 14, and Big Daddy Kane came in at No. 20. It was noted that Nicki Minaj arrived at No. 10, which didn’t sit well with Melle Mel. “You know that’s some bullsh*t,” he said. The interviewer laughed. “C’mon, now. Kane and them and Rakim and them, they done put in 40 [years]. C’mon, now.”

Melle Mel Calls It “Blasphemy”

Before giving his complete thoughts, Melle noted that he “actually likes Nicki Minaj.” However, he reiterated that those placements were “bullsh*t.” Mel added, “You gotta understand what Hip Hop really, really is past whoever made what record. You see what I’m sayin’? Rakim should never be 14, because his style changed the game. The average rapper, from a certain point to a certain point, you had to rap like Rakim. That was the only time that cats from my era, that we had to alter our style to be more up to date with what he was doing and what was going on.”

Mel then detailed Rakim’s delivery. “How could you disrespect the game like that?” he further said about ranking Rakim at 13. “He’s easily—if you’re just talkin’ about the pure rappers—Rakim and somebody like Kool G Rap. Those are basically the top rappers of the game. Pure rappers. Records aside and all that, just a pure rapper. Rakim, he should never be 14. If you’re talkin’ records and allt hat, he would be closer to No. 1 because of what he did for the game and the culture. That’s the angle where I’m comin’ from.”

It’s Not About Your Taste

Melle Mel also stated that he doesn’t rank according to who he likes because he doesn’t listen to music like that. “But to say LL and Rakim is 14 and 15, but Nicki Minaj is No. 10. Based on what? That’s where it don’t make sense. Nicki Minaj being on—that’s blasphemy. And I don’t got nothing wrong with Nicki, actually I like Nicki Minaj. She can write, decent looking chick. Even if she was better than Rakim, you don’t put her over no goddamn Rakim.” Check it out above.

Nicki Minaj’s Ex-Manager Sickamore Recalls Her Blasting Him For Photo Shoot

Nicki Minaj’s ex-manager Sickamore just recalled how she blasted him for messing up a photo shoot. While Nicki’s clearly moved on to larger success since then, it’s interesting to hear a tale from when she was just getting started. Moreover, the music executive recounted the experience with Saigon and Mobb Deep’s Havoc on VladTV. During that conversation, he said that the rapper had a photo shoot with VIBE magazine and he didn’t set up a trailer for her to change in. In fact, Minaj’s subsequent scolding made him quit the position before she became a superstar.

“She had this VIBE magazine shoot, you know, it’s like a two-page spread,” Sickamore expressed. “She had a diner, and she got to the place. I wasn’t there, and she didn’t have no trailer. She had to change in the bathroom, and she called me like flipping out, as she should, and then I was cocky. I was like, ‘Man, I don’t need all of this. Just don’t worry about it, you can find your own manager.’ So she calls me back, she gave me an opportunity, she’s like, ‘Are you sure? Like, you sure you know what you’re doing?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, my own mother don’t talk to me like this. I’m not going to let anybody talk to me like this.’

Nicki Minaj’s Ex-Manager Recalls Messing Up Photo Shoot

“So we handled business,” he concluded. “It was like a little bit of money or whatever. We cleaned that up, next thing I know, ‘Super Bass,’ and I was just like, God damn.” Furthermore, Sickamore worked with the “Super Freaky Girl” star from 2007 to 2008. After he quit, she took on Deb Antney as a replacement, who previously managed Gucci Mane.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old might’ve fired up her beef with Megan Thee Stallion during her Rolling Loud L.A. performance. As such, many Nicki Stans are hyping up her next move, as new music and performances might result in a new album. Still, only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: maybe Sickamore regrets his decision now. Regardless, check back in with HNHH for the latest news and updates on Nicki Minaj.

Nicki Minaj Allegedly Sneak Disses Meg Thee Stallion at Rolling Loud

Nicki Minaj Megan Thee Stallion

Nicki Minaj took the stage on Day 2 of the star-studded Rolling Loud California festival alongside rapper Lil Wayne. The performance allegedly threw shade at 28 year-old rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

These comments come just days after Minaj addressed drama with rapper Big Latto on her “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” single. Not all Minaj news is drama coated. Monday, she announced the creation of her very own Record Label that already has an impressive roster.

Amidst the  Lil Wayne set, Minaj and Wheezy performed songs such as BedRock, Truffle Butter, High School, and more. Between spitting bars, many fans took notice of Minaj’s sneak comments allegedly aimed at Megan Thee Stallion. On stage she said, “I said, 700 horses will be fixing to leave, but I don’t f*ck with horses since Christopher Reeve.” Immediately after, she began a confident performance of “Chun-Li” as the crowd cheered her on.

On the other supposed diss line Nicki snaps, “Ya fuckin’ bozo/That .40 cal a make ’em dance like a go-go.” In an attempt to break down the shade for those lost, one twitter user wrote, “’Make em dance’ is saying to shoot at someone’s feet, what Tory Lanez did to Megan Thee Stallion. Nicki Minaj is once again attacking Megan even though Megan hasn’t said a word in months. Bitter Barbie is having one sided beef again because of the success Megan has.”

Beef between Nicki and Megan arose last year when Nicki Minaj appeared to call out Megan for being fake and encouraging her to have an abortion, though Megan denied these claims. It is clear that many following this beef are not fans of Nicki’s behavior. However, the Barbz do not play when it comes to their Queen B. Listen to what this Tik Tok user had to say below.

Nicki Minaj Shared The Roster (But Not The Name) Of Her Brand New Record Label

Nicki Minaj had herself a weekend. Friday, March 3, brought fans “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” her first single since her No. 1 smash “Super Freaky Girl.” Saturday, March 4, she manifested a full-circle moment by surprisingly joining Lil Wayne’s set at Rolling Loud California. (She was the first-ever woman rapper to headline last year’s Rolling Loud New York.)

Minaj perhaps unintentionally buried the lede, she also made a major announcement on the Friday episode of her Queen Radio.

“Well, I have a record label now,” Minaj confirmed on the latest episode (as noted by Complex). The diamond-certified rapper didn’t reveal the name of her record label yet, but Patty Lauren (aka Patty Duke) has been tapped as the A&R.

Complex additionally relayed that the roster includes Nana Fofie, London Hill, Rico Danna, and Tate Kobang.

Per Billboard, Minaj credited Republic co-president Wendy Goldstein with pushing her to create her own label — “I don’t want no little itty-bitty ting ting; I want to do it right”— and clarified that her artists will be diverse (“Don’t think my label is just rap or Black or anything”).

Fofie’s since-expired Instagram Story showed her and the rest of Minaj’s new roster toasting “to better days,” and Kobang also posted a celebratory Instagram. See the posts below.

Nicki Minaj recently announced her new record label. Early details reveal Paddy Duke will be the first A&R on the label and will be genre-spanning. The label’s name hasn’t been announced yet, but Minaj did reveal the inspiration, Lil Wayne.

“When I came in this game I didn’t have no paperwork with Lil Wayne,” Minaj said. “But he had us on tour, he had us in a studio, he was getting on my mixtapes. So I understand the importance of having somebody else doing the heavy lifting for you. I understand why people are coming out and they’re so, you know, microwaveable and they’re here today and gone tomorrow, because there’s no structure. There’s no real person that believes in them. That’s like, ‘nah, I’m gonna make it my business to see you shine’. That’s why I never wanted to do a label before because I said to myself …unless I’m ready to really put these artists on I’m not gonna ruin anyone’s life.”

Over the weekend, Lil Wayne, the weekend’s special guest, brought out Nicki Minaj to perform a number of classics like “Super Freaky Girl,” “Truffle Butter,” and “High School” before closing off the Gopuff Stage for the evening.
