Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Just Got Its First Awards Nomination

One of the funniest lines in the whole Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef comes on The Boy’s “Family Matters”: “Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now.” Not only is it a comically dismissive assessment making fun of K.Dot glazers in the white-dominated industry, but it’s also pretty accurate at Drizzy’s expense. Because it seems like the most fun, mocking, disparaging, and lightly disrespectful track in the whole battle, “Not Like Us,” is not just a hit with fans and critics, but with awards shows. Moreover, the Mustard-produced banger has just received its first award nomination: Song of the Year at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

While it’s no golden gramophone, it’s still a pretty big and visible award that speaks to what Drake meant to say about Kendrick Lamar. Disses aside, the song and music video is undeniably worthy of high praise from pretty much every corner under the sun. But there are a lot of fans out there that find this nomination (and presumably more to come) pretty odd. On one hand, it’s a great song and visual treatment, but on the other, do we really want big corporations and the larger music industry to chip into a rap beef that should really just be a one-on-one cultural affair?

Kendrick Lamar Pops Out In MTV VMAs Nominations

OVO Stans will use this and other “Not Like Us” nominations to call Drake a prophet and clown Kendrick Lamar even further, whereas pgLang fans will rejoice in how embarrassing of a look this is for Aubrey Graham in the industry. But at the end of the day, a huge chunk of both fanbases couldn’t care less about awards, and would rather have ceremonies ignore their material instead of trying to pick a side, remove their context, or give praise to both.

We’ll see how this discourse evolves, and whether or not Kendrick Lamar or Drake actually show up to the event. We don’t have a clear idea of what all the nominations for this year’s VMAs look like, so keep an eye out for that in the coming days. In any case, the ceremony goes down on September 10. Will the Compton lyricist pop out, is this just an obligatory nomination, or does he really not care at all as long as the culture knows his victory?

Deputy Who Shot Sonya Massey Claimed He Feared For His Life In Field Report

Former deputy Sean Grayson claimed that he feared for his life when Sonya Massey remarked, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” during the 911 call that ended with him shooting the 36-year-old Black woman in her home. In his field report, which became public on Monday, Grayson wrote that he “interpreted to mean she was going to kill me.”

“As I approached the cabinet, Sonya stood up from a crouched position, grabbing the pot, raising it above her head and throwing the boiling substance to me,” Grayson wrote on July 9. “I was in imminent fear of getting boiling liquid to my face or chest, which would have caused great bodily harm or death. I fired my duty weapon in Sonya’s direction.”

The killing of Massey began gaining national attention after police released body-camera footage from the incident. The video shows Grayson shooting and killing her after she apologizes for the remark. The sheriff’s office fired him afterward and he now faces first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and official misconduct charges. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in police custody.

Massey’s family and other community leaders have called for the resignation of Sheriff Jack Campbell, but he’s declined to do so. “I will not abandon the sheriff’s office at this most critical moment. Yesterday evening, she had this to say regarding what’s in store for her after traveling all over the place, “Yesterday was my last show for a while. Finally bout to get my life together thank u God.”

This could mean an absolute host of things. This could be a loose allusion to her current dating life. In a past interview on the Chicken Shop Date, she told the host, Amanda Dimoldenberg, that she can never seem to keep men around. “I feel like I can catch ’em, but I cannot keep ’em. They get with me and they realize I’m f***ing weird, and then it’s just like, ‘Aight’”. More realistically, it could be a reference to her getting some new music out.

SZA Has Some Work To Do

With Lana still in limbo thanks to leaks, the now full-fleshed project could start to be rolled out here in these ensuing months. Moreover, RiRi recently stole the show at her home country’s Crop Over Festival this year on Monday (August 5), donning a jewel-heavy carnival costume with feathered wings and a luxurious crown. As she and her friends (including Ayra Starr) partied on a float for the festivities, they said hi to fans and overall seemed to have a fantastic time. For those unaware, Crop Over is a centuries-old gathering celebrating the end of the harvest in Barbados and is similar to Carnival celebrations in Brazil and Trinidad, for example.
