Complex’s Top 50 Atlanta Rappers List Leads To Outraged Social Media Debates

Rankings and lists of any nature in the field of hip-hop always cause some form of uproar. The latest example in this long and nonetheless honorable tradition is Complex‘s list of the top 50 Atlanta rappers of all time. You can check out the full list with the “Via” link below, but here are some highlights… Or lowlights, for some. Sean Paul at 40, JID at 27, Lil Yachty at 24, Takeoff at 19, Playboi Carti at 12, Gucci Mane at 4, and André 3000 at the very top spot. Of course, this led to a bunch of outraged social media reactions. These indluce backlash to the high placement of Latto, the underrating of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and other considerations.

Also, this reflection on Atlanta’s hip-hop legacy comes at a very interesting time for the city’s place in the culture. Just a couple of months ago, Kendrick Lamar accused the biggest rapper in the world right now of colonizing ATL’s sound for his own gain. While the conversation around Drake’s proximity to MCs from the A has been going on for a long time, it’s never been more present or direct. Regardless of where you fall on that debate, one thing is clear: the city is up.

Complex Picks Its Top 50 Atlanta Rappers Of All Time

In addition, Tyler, The Creator recently called out white rappers for appropriating and ridiculing the classic Atlanta sounds of high-ranking artists on this Complex list. “This white kid, regular Caucasian man,” he said during his recently published Maverick Carter interview. “And he’s, like, mocking Future and Gucci Mane… Like, rap music. People are like, ‘This s**t hard.’ It’s not even like satire… I hold rap music so close to my heart. This s**t changed my life and everyone’s life around me.” Check out more reactions to this top 50 list below.

Fan Reactions

Meanwhile, Latto is currently leading Atlanta’s wave thanks to her new album Sugar Honey Iced Tea. We’ll see who the next artist to rep the city with a huge release is, and what other names emerge to continue that community’s traditions and musical legacy. As this Complex list ironically proves, there are far more than just 50 notable rappers from ATL. And there will be many more that take the sound and the culture to new innovations, changes, and worthwhile contributions to the city. Let us know what you think of the list and what your own picks look like down in the comments below.

Dr Umar Accused Of Posting Fake Text Message From Kamala Harris’ Campaign

Dr. Umar Johnson is a very popular and often divisive voice in Black culture these days. Whether it’s his thoughts on the rap battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake or, in this case, his thoughts on politics, he’s always making waves for his staunch perspectives. But a lot of folks think that the psychologist and social media personality was too quick to hop in that conversation. Moreover, he posted a screenshot of an alleged text message that the Kamala Harris campaign sent him to link up, along with his enthusiastic response. However, many reacted to this post by doubting that this was actually from the Harris campaign. Did Dr. Umar fall for the trick or is he trying to make this conversation happen through some Internet hijinks?

“Hello Dr. Umar Johnson. [redacted] from the Harris2024 team,” the alleged text message from the Kamala Harris campaign to Dr. Umar began, sent at 10:30PM local time. “You are a big part part of the Black community. Can you help us by completing a Zoom meeting with VP Kamala Harris. Paying [redacted]. We are looking for about an hour of your time. Please advise if you would like to complete the Zoom call. Your help can get us across the finish line. HARRIS2024.” Scroll through the replies in the Twitter post below to see folks’ skepticism.

Dr. Umar’s Alleged Text Exchange With Kamala Harris’ Campaign

“Peace & PanAfrikanism,” Dr. Umar responded at 11:45PM local time. “I hope that all is well. I’m not interested in your money. However, I am very interested in having the zoom conversation with Vice President Harris to discuss our needs and her plans for the Black community. This zoom must be livecasted to the national Black community and may not be prerecorded. I promise to be completely respectful of the Vice President but I will ask direct questions about miseducation, mass incarceration, police brutality, economic strangulation, gentrification/migrant crisis, reparations & and [sic] the need for a federal anti-Black Hate Crimes Bill.”

Other figures like Meek Mill might share some of Dr. Umar’s sentiments. “I wanna ask Kamala Harris questions about her past as a da. Even if she had to be tough….” he recently tweeted. “All I hear is rumors of her. I would ask her 3 questions about black and brown men going to prison. And her views and try to help her understand from a survival standpoint point she may have never had to encounter!”

Tina Knowles & Richard Lawson Divorce Settlement Figures Revealed

Tina Knowles and Richard Lawson have reportedly settled their divorce, and new details about the numbers involved and other considerations recently emerged thanks to court documents reportedly obtained by In Touch Weekly. Moreover, these docs state that they split due to “irreconcilable differences that have arisen between the parties which have led to the irremediable breakdown of the marriage, making it impossible for the parties to live together as husband and wife.” But it seems like this settlement satisfied both individuals.

Furthermore, one of the terms is that Tina Knowles must pay her estranged ex-husband a one-time payment of $300K. Neither she nor Richard Lawson will receive spousal support from the other. As a result of their settlement and agreed-upon terms, Tina also got a 2018 Tesla, a 2020 Bentley, the Matriarch Book partnership with Penguin Random House, a one-percent interest in Kirby Beauty Management LLC, furniture and art in her possession, and all creative works, ideas, drafts, and materials that she generated during their marriage. These awards don’t change the fact that Knowles must pay all credit card debits she garnered during their relationship.

At least Tina Knowles will keep her Los Angeles home and the belongings within. On the other hand, Richard Lawson’s awards were a 2021 Cadillac Escalade, various bank and retirement accounts, all money owed to Richard Lawson Studios, earned royalties, and all his creative works that manifested during the marriage. As far as the Cadillac, he had to pay everything for it. The court docs also reveal an NDA that both must sign, which bars both of them from speaking negatively about the other party, their children, or their grandchildren.

“With respect to the mutual desire to protect the privacy rights of any and all present or future grandchildren of either party, the parties agree that they will not, when asked by any media or person, discuss said grandchildren or future grandchildren whether verbally or in writing,” Tina Knowles and Richard Lawson’s agreement reportedly reads. In other news, Tina’s endorsement of Kamala Harris put some more Beyoncé songs on the campaign playlist. As her family continues to see success, we wish her and Lawson the best in the future with all their endeavors.

Sexyy Red Clears The Air Surrounding Chief Keef Relationship Rumors

Sexyy Red and Chief Keef have so much collaborative chemistry that they apparently have a joint album on the way, but fans are still wondering if there’s more to it than that. Moreover, following some social media jabs back and forth with King Von’s sister Kayla B, many are speculating as to whether or not the two rappers are a romantic item. Kayla and Sexyy joked about sharing the Chicago legend and, while many thought their clash was legitimate, it seems like there’s a good chance it was all joking or all for show. During a new Thoughts In A Culli interview with GRM Daily CEO Post, the St. Louis femcee spoke on how she would characterize her bond with Sosa.

It’s genuine,” Sexyy Red said of her relationship, professional or otherwise, with Chief Keef. “That’s my peoples, that’s my dog. Like, I don’t got too many homeboys that I can sit on the phone with. And I’m not even saying that’s my homeboy ’cause I don’t know what we got going on. We like each other, but we can sit on the phone, we can be around each other and act like we been knew each other all these years.”

Sexyy Red Speaks On Chief Keef Relationship

Not only that, but when Post doubled down, Sexyy Red seemed to double down as well: “That’s my n***a.” In fact, she even joked about making Chief Keef her third baby daddy after advocating for her first’s freedom. Still, while these words don’t put an official label on them or even confirm that these statements refer to a romantic fling, it does seem like they at least have a great bond together that they still have yet to define.

As such, maybe we can expect a more formal relationship reveal somewhere down the line for Sexyy Red and Chief Keef. The “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)” dynamic duo certainly have fans on the edge of their seats for more chemistry-filled collaborations. But are they actually an item or just good friends leaning into the promotional and engagement opportunities that a romance would bring them? Either way, we’re here for it.

Skai Jackson Ignores Fan Questions About Recent Arrest

In a TikTok livestream on Wednesday, Skai Jackson decided not to address her recent legal issues. After a fan asked her what happened at Universal Studios, she opted to go into detail about a new show she finished filming. The same day, she made a sponsored post with Cantu Beauty, limiting the comments to those that follow her so that she didn’t get bombarded with comments about the situation. She also disabled comments on her previous posts. At that point, disgruntled fans accused her of ignoring the questions by making up fake ones. None of the “questions” she actually answered were visible on the screen at any point.

Of course, younger fans will best remember Skai Jackson for her time on Disney Channel. She played Zuri Ross on the hit show Jessie from 2011 to 2015. She reprised the role on the first three seasons of Bunk’d, a spin-off series, from 2015 to 2018. In 2020, Jackson finished in fifth place on the 29th season of Dancing With The Stars. She most recently appeared in The Man In The White Van, a thriller film starring Sean Astin, Ari Larter, and Madison Wolfe, scheduled for a theatrical release in North America on October 11. Based on her recent stream, she has another project on the way. It is possible that she isn’t answering questions since the case is has not yet been resolved, but it is unlikely that she’ll ever address it at all.

Michael Rubin Addresses Backlash To His Comments About Black Culture

Michael Rubin’s recent appearance on The Breakfast Club drew some significant uproar from the Internet for a couple of different reasons. One of these was his comments about Drake attending his White Party in the aftermath of the Kendrick Lamar battle, which led DJ Akademiks to claim that the 6ix God took 20 OVO affiliates with him to bring some muscle to the table in case anyone was about to ask why Baka was still around. But the real controversy behind Rubin’s radio show appearance was his comments about not liking certain parts of Black culture, remarks which he’s now apologized for.

“I got a phone call from one of the people I have the most respect for in the world,” Michael Rubin tweeted on Thursday afternoon (August 15) after his comments on Black people hating on other Black people caused viral backlash. “They told me while they appreciate my intention, it’s not my place to speak on Black culture. I get it and really appreciate the input! My intention was to say how important it is that we need to uplift each other, stop hate on each other, and push each other to win, and always root for each other’s success! My bad, Much love and appreciate the feedback [two heart emojis]. @breakfastclubam @djenvy @cthagod @LorenLorosa.”

Michael Rubin’s Apology For Black Culture Comments

Elsewhere, this is what Michael Rubin had to say about banning Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss track at his Fourth of July White Party this year since Drake was attending. “It was true,” he said of the rumors on The Breakfast Club. “I just didn’t think it was appropriate, so I said, ‘Hey, let’s not play anyone’s music that’s feuding with anyone here.’ That was a me decision. I just thought it wasn’t the appropriate thing to do.”

Meanwhile, Michael Rubin also defended Meek Mill’s heterosexuality amid rumors spurred by the Diddy revelations that he’s actually attracted to other genders. “When I see the narrative of a really good friend of mine like Meek, and people are trying to… Again, if he was gay — which there’s not one gay bone in his body — who cares, number one,” he shared. “If people wanna be gay, it is 2024. Who the f**k cares? Number two, there’s not a gay bone in his body, so why do people wanna lie about that? Why do people want to change the narrative of a bet he made with me to try to hurt him?”
