First U.S. Case of Polio in Nearly a Decade Found in New York State
A case of polio has been detected in an unvaccinated man in New York State. According to the New York Times, the New York State Department of Health identified the man as a resident of Rockland County.
According to the Department of Health, the infection was transmitted from someone who did not receive the vaccine, which has not been administered in the country since 2000. There is optimism that the virus originated outside the United States.
“I want to stress that this individual is no longer contagious,” said Ed Day, the Rockland County executive. “Our efforts now are focused on two issues: vaccinations and figuring out if anyone else has been impacted by this disease.”
Officials now recommend completing vaccinations for those who have not, citing that those who have had all three shots are close to 100 percent protection.
The man infected with Polio is believed to have “weakness and paralysis” and now his family and close contacts are being surveyed to ensure no additional risk to the community.
Prior to this case, the last trace of polio in the U.S. was in 2013, when the disease was brought from abroad. There has not been a case that originated in the United States since 1979.

Cardi B Debates New York’s Best Chopped Cheese With Adorable Child Journalist Jazzy’s World
Watch out, Nardwuar, Jazzy’s World is coming for your spot. The 11-year-old Brooklyn-bred reporter (real name Jazlyn Guerra) has been going viral left and right thanks to adorable and earnest interviews with some of the biggest names in music and sports, including Jay-Z, J. Cole, and Shaq, and it turns out she’s just getting started. Her latest big get is Cardi B, who looks absolutely delighted to be getting interviewed by a kid who is only a few years away from being her own daughter’s age.
In the clip below, the pair share one of the timeless New Yorker debates: Which borough has the best chopped cheese sandwich. Jazzy has one stipulation though: “Before you answer,” she says. “Do not say The Bronx just because you’re from there… Let’s talk facts.” Listen, this kid’s got the right stuff. She’s gonna make it in this biz. “Let my tell you why I’m gonna say The Bronx,” Cardi shoots back. “I go to the studio here in downtown [Manhattan], and every time I leave the studio, it be like three or four o’clock in the morning and when I be hungry… I order a chopped cheese and they just don’t have like how I remember it growing up.” She does admit, however, that she’s never had one from Brooklyn.
Of course, Jazzy thinks her home borough of Brooklyn makes the best chopped cheese, suggesting that the debate will continue forever. Meanwhile, hidden in there is the knowledge that Cardi has been going to the studio and working on her upcoming sophomore album until late (or early), so there must be some progress being made, right? Check out the clip above.
Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
Jake Paul Set To Fight Tommy Fury At MSG In August
Are you Team Paul or Team Fury?
YouTube star-turned-undefeated Pro Boxer Jake Paul (5-0-4 KO) will return to the ring on August 6 to take on the Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s younger brother, Tommy Fury (8-0-4 KO), in Madison Square Garden. Originally scheduled for last December, however, Fury was forced to withdraw due to injury, leaving Paul to fight a rematch bout against Tyron Woodley instead, and earned a knockout victory in the eighth round.

A rivalry between Paul and Fury erupted in early 2021 with the two boxers exchanging words across social media. The upcoming fight marks Jake Paul’s third fight in a six-fight deal with Showtime Boxing. Paul-Fury will be co-presented by Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.
“I wasn’t sure I was going to say yes to another potential matchup against Tommy after he pulled out of our matchup last year,” Paul said via press release on Thursday. “But ultimately, knocking out a Fury was too appealing to pass up.”

Tommy Fury will be the first “actual” boxer to face Jake Paul after accumulating a buzzing undefeated resume with two MMA fighters (Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren), a Basketball player (Nate Robinson), and a fellow YouTuber star (AnEsonGib). “The Paul brothers’ boxing charade is about to come to an end once and for all,” Fury said. “I am a boxer. My opponent plays boxing. Jake Paul has been dressed up to look like a boxer against retirees from other sports. On August 6, I will show the world that he does not belong in the ring.”
Now a promoter, Paul signed his first boxer, WBC and WBO featherweight champion Amanda Serrano, last December. Serrano will co-headling the August lineup with Paul as she will fight Argentina’s Brenda Carabajal.
An official press conference for the upcoming boxing match will be held this Wednesday. Paul vs. Fury will be available on Showtime Pay-Per-View. Tickets go on-sale Wednesday, July 29.
