Heems Returns With Saul Williams And Lapgan For “Accent,” The Lead Single To His Upcoming Project

New York has so many corners of hip-hop, with underground being one of its most prevalent. That is where Punjabi-American rapper Heems has resided for his career. Overall, he has not been extremely active. He has delivered a decent string of singles over the past year as far as Heems’ standards are concerned. But, the last full-length tape we got from him came back in 2015 with Eat Pray Thug.

However, that is all changing after almost nine (!) years. Heems will be dropping a collaboration album with Indian-American producer Lapgan. The tape will be titled LAFANDAR and is due to be released on Friday, February 16. It will be an offering from Heems’ label Veena Sounds which is another exciting project of his.

Quotable Lyrics:

When premises betray promises, who do you run to?
Your feet are tired of running from hate
And they put a gun to your head and so you pray for peace
Become a piece of prey
Cried out, ‘How do you muster tears for today?’
Do I aspire to a hashtag of my memory?

Slum Village Unveils Another Single Ahead Of New Album, “Request”

It’s been quite some time since listeners have heard a new album from Slum Village, but luckily, they won’t have to wait much longer. Currently, the duo is gearing up to drop their upcoming full-length project, FUN. While fans are still waiting for an official release date, it’s safe to say they can’t wait. Lil Nas X Is Living Up To Entering His Christian Era On Upcoming Single “J CHRIST”

Lil Nas X had one of the more dominant runs in music in the past several years from 2019-2021. His viral tracks such as “MONTERO” and “INDUSTRY BABY” had him constantly topping the charts. However, the past year and a half has been quiet for the Georgia native. In 2022, Nas X put out two singles. Those were “Late To Da Party (F*CK BET)” with NBA YoungBoy and “STAR WALKIN’.” The latter was a collaboration with the League of Legends video game.

Part of the reason for his lack of production is because Nas X feels he was “blackballed” from releasing in 2023. According to Billboard, it is because of “promoting God to the masses.” The latter of the comments were made late last week. Around the same time, Lil Nas said he was going to “expose the industry” and that he needed to “watch his back.”

In addition to all of those statements, the multi-talent made one last year. He claimed he was going to enter his “Christian era.” Well, he is living up to that promise it seems. According to Pitchfork the platinum recording artist revealed the cover art and release date for “J CHRIST.” “MY NEW SINGLE IS DEDICATED TO THE MAN WHO HAD THE GREATEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME!” It will be out on Friday, January 12. Also according to Billboard, this track is rumored to be put out independently, and not through Columbia Records. Nas X is doing this because “[my label] gave me the choice of going independent to release my gospel music or staying with them.”

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new single announcement by Lil Nas X? Will “J CHRIST” be his best song in the last couple of years? How do you feel about the rumors that this will have gospel inspiration? Does this mean that he is getting ready to drop an album this year? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Fabolous Recaps Dubai Travels On New Single & Music Video, “OSHO Freestyle”: Stream

Fabolous“Freestyle Friday” series has been giving us heat for a while, and why would 2024 be any different? Moreover, he opened up the year with a new off-top song and music video, “OSHO Freestyle,” in which he recaps his Dubai travels in the visuals. The New York rapper starts the video with a phone call from his plane, and shows the lavish New Year’s celebrations and performances that he engaged in during his time there. Overall, it’s a pretty opulent cut with a thematic focus that centers it around his success and career moves after what many would argue is his peak. Fab’s still not slowing down after all these years, so the quality drop is practically nonexistent.

Furthermore, “OSHO Freestyle” uses what sounds like a dramatic and grand Middle Eastern sample to accentuate his surroundings in the music video. Perhaps that’s a misguided assumption, but the important part is that it fits incredibly well with Fabolous’ evolutionary flow. In addition, the hardened trap drums give this song a nice edge that he also displayed on recent “Freestyle Friday” entries like “Tuluminati.” That also saw the 46-year-old make a connection to his location, and we can’t complain about the results so far. As far as lyrical focus, there’s not much new here: luxury, skill, and the like.

Meanwhile, this comes amid claims from French Montana that his collaboration with Loso, “Ball Drop,” should have won a Grammy. It also follows previous freestyles, such as Drake’s Scary Hours 3 challenge, in which he was as lyrically sharp and charismatic as he’s ever been in his post-prime career. But with this new offering and many others, it’s clear that we can’t box Fabolous into a specific era in which he was top-tier; he’s just too good to do so. If you haven’t heard “OSHO Freestyle” yet, check out the music video above and some standout bars below. Also, as always, check back in with HNHH for more great hip-hop releases around the clock.

NBA YoungBoy Assists Tre Savage On New Song & Music Video “FYN”: Stream

Tre Savage is a new name in the game that just made a big splash with the new NBA YoungBoy-assisted single and music video “FYN” [F**k You, N***a]. Moreover, it’s a classic Southern-inspired and soulful trap beat on which Savage displays a lot of influence from the Baton Rouge native. In the track’s visuals on YouTube, a space that YB continues to dominate, they move through his Gravedigger Mountain property in Utah while on house arrest. However, it’s heartening to see that both MCs still perform with plenty of energy, charisma, and confidence for this record. With this, we think that we’ll be seeing a lot more of Tre’s output in 2024.

Furthermroe, “FYN” strikes a common balance in YoungBoy’s catalog: soulful instrumentation and samples with hardened trap drums. The claps, shuffles, hi-hats, percs, and kicks all sound crisp and infectiously groovy on this cut. In addition, they support dense electric bass, woozy guitar chords, some key arrangements, and even an organ thrown in there. Not only that, but Tre Savage comes through with some impactful lines, combative boasting, and a hardened delivery. It’s been great to see the I Rest My Case spitter collab with more artists, as he’s apparently working with the one and only B.G. soon.

Meanwhile, this new cut follows a lot of recent press for YoungBoy, during which he spoke a lot about his current state, career, and legal troubles. Another important topic during recent interviews is his relationship with substances, something that he hopes to improve upon moving forward. This move to support a burgeoning artist and show him the ropes is a win-win situation, and hopefully we get many more of those in 2024. If you haven’t heard “FYN” yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and peep the music video above. BabyDrill Asks “What’s The Ticket” On New Single & Music Video: Stream

BabyDrill might be one of the hottest names in the game in 2024, and it looks like he wants to kick things off strong. Moreover, he just released a new single and music video, exclusively on YouTube at press time and not on streaming services, titled “What’s the Ticket.” Furthermore, it follows previous singles like “Watchin Now” and other big moments from the rapper’s breakout 2023, which hopefully translates into better material moving forward. This new cut is a solid indicator of that reality, displaying his penchant for warbled but charismatic flows. Not only that, but the Atlanta MC makes sure to pace himself appropriately throughout his verses to break up their progression.

Meanwhile, the instrumental on “What’s the Ticket” is a dark and menacing one with ghostly synth pads, a very faint and simple melody building off of them, and a hardened Southern trap drum pattern. It doesn’t evolve or go in any significantly new direction, so you know it’s meant to emphasize BabyDrill’s verse and wordplay. On that front, his lines are more vivid and impactful than anything else, but he still has sharper ones in the bag. “The city full of lollipops, stay away from suckers,” the “WHAT’S THE MOVE?” spitter warns after the first chorus. With eclectic ad-libs, lyrical focuses on street proficiency and larger success than his rivals, and a very light additional synth melody for the chorus, this song will make you feel untouchable on a late night drive.

Meanwhile, it will be exciting to see where DelQuristo Wilson goes from here considering his career, particularly his collaborative history. He crafted the banger “Issa Party” in support of Latto last year and also popped out on Young Nudy’s “Duntsane” in 2022. Hopefully this knack for chemistry and team-ups is a skill that keeps going up as this year draws on. FTP Records, Sematary, Hackle & Chief Keef Drop New Banger “F**k The World”: Stream

FTP Records, based from the F**KTHEPOPULATION merch brand, will likey have a breakout 2024 with a mixtape reportedly on the way. To get some hype behind it, the collective just released a destructive new single with some former collaborators. Moreover, Sematary, Hackle, and the one and only Chief Keef rip through their aggressive and misanthropic verses on this new song, “F**k The World.” The incredibly distorted instrumental takes heavy inspiration from early Chicago drill sounds and more harsh trap styles, plus mixtape-like DJ drops. Sosa in particular, who just remixed one of Sexyy Red’s biggest songs this year, doesn’t hold anything back with wild delivery and unbridled rage.

In fact, Sematary had previously spoken to Complex about how excited he was about this Chief Keef collab back in June. The pioneer inspired a lot of the Haunted Mound leader’s work and artistry, so to see this full-circle moment is heartening and exciting.  “I got a Sosa feature on my song,” the King Of The Graveyard visionary expressed. “With Zac FTP for the FTP album. It’s called ‘F**k The World.’ I got Chief Keef on my s**t, so no one can ever say s**t about me now. Like he made all of this, there ain’t no any of this without him. I can’t even put it into words.” To see the Glo Gang MC join one of the scariest and most explosive sounds adjacent to hip-hop right now is truly special, and it helps that “F**k The World” ends up being so catchy and energized.

Meanwhile, Chief Keef is living large at his mansion these days, so we’re sure that he and the rest of the crew are having a great time ushering in 2024. “F**k The World” is certainly a killer way to kick off the year, and with the FTP album on the way, we hope that it’s a solid indicator of its quality. Elsewhere, we’re sure that Sematary and Hackle will continue to put out amazing material within their niche in the next 365 days. Uncle Murda References Sexyy Red, Young Thug & More On “Rap Up 2023”: Stream

As is tradition at this point, Uncle Murda summarized a lot of pop culture and hip-hop’s biggest events of the year on his new song “Rap Up 2023.” However, in contrast to previous years, it looks like this is actually part one of three, the next of which will hopefully come in the near future. As such, we know that he has so much more to talk about when it comes to some of the last 365 days’ biggest stories, perhaps over the same sample of Mary J. Blige’s “All Night Long.” Moreover, when it comes to the song, there’s not a lot to say here. The beat is classic New York all the way and the G-Unit rapper’s flows and delivery is a little choppy.

Still, that’s understandable considering all the different topics that come up on the first part of “Rap Up 2023.” Blueface, Chrisean Rock, Sexyy Red, Andre 3000’s new album, Offset, Cardi B, Donald Trump, Jamie Foxx, Young Thug, Gunna, Lil Baby, and so many more get a mention here for their various headlines. There’s also the Remy Ma and Papoose cheating drama, Keke Palmer’s scandal with Darius Jackson, the Lizzo lawsuits, Boosie and T.I.’s relationship, and the list goes on. Not everyone’s a fan of these cuts, but it’s at least entertaining to hear these takes and the stories link together. The Brooklyn MC held no punches through controversial assessments and wild claims.

Meanwhile, he also hinted at fully diving into the Diddy accusations in the next parts of this installment. Kanye West’s ghostwriter was still able to fit a lot into this track. Other celebrities include Da Brat, Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez, Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert, Nicki Minaj and Elliott Wilson, etc. We won’t spoil his observations. BabyTron Wishes Us A Very “MERRY S**TMAS” On New Single & Music Video: Stream

Before we close out 2023, let’s take a look back at an underrated holiday rap song that dropped on Christmas Day this year. It comes from none other than Michigan rap leader BabyTron, who had a pretty prolific and hectic year. In addition to his own solo projects, he, StanWill, and TrDee finished their collaborative tape series as S***tyBoyz with Trifecta 3: The Finale. Speaking of that collective, which the Detroit native always reps, he did the same on this new Christmas song, “MERRY S**TMAS.” It’s available exclusively on YouTube as a music video as of writing this article, and flips the “12 Days of Christmas” melody and song structure.

Of course, the track adds some rapid and deep kicks, sharp snares, and muted rattling hi-hats to give it that Detroit bounce. BabyTron is flowing on “MERRY S**TMAS” as quickly as ever, working in some funny turns of phrase and narrative moments throughout his verse. In fact, he often likes to work with this sort of planned structure, specifically writing bars for a given set of numbers or with a certain theme. Unsurprisingly, the “Mr. Hanky” MC delivers once again here, even working in a tempo slow-down with casual ease. His flows and wordplay are pretty idiosyncratic and beloved at this point, showcases by albums like MegaTron 2.

Meanwhile, this has also been a pretty big year for the 23-year-old in other ways that further his career. For example, he featured on JID and Lil Yachty’s “Half Doin Dope” and had a killer verse on there. Hopefully BabyTron will bring us many more gifts in 2024 that continue to cement his status as a new generation star. Boldy James & Your Boy Posca Claim “They Vouching” On Grimy New Single: Stream

As if Boldy James didn’t prove himself enough this year after a nasty car crash, he came through with the help of producer Your Boy Posca for one more excellent drop in 2023. Moreover, they just released the single “They Vouching,” the only digital release from their new project 1LB (One Lucky Bastard). It released exclusively on various vinyl and cassette variants through the Near Mint website, and some copies still remain at press time, so act fast to get yours in the mail soon. It’s a grimy cut that showcases the Detroit spitter’s excellent flows, rhyme schemes, and wordplay.

Furthermore, Your Boy Posca highlights this style with some ethereal flute samples, ambient synth tones, and a very light but crisp drum beat. Lyrically, Boldy James keeps finding new ways to rap about street life and its parallels with his skill in the rap game with a lot of vivid imagery, clever turns of phrase, and a cold, calculated, but hyper-focused demeanor. It’s a style that he easily dominates with nonchalant but impressive flows, which makes the content within once you peep past his monotone delivery that much more impressive. The 41-year-old displayed similar characteristics to equally quality results on this year’s projects Prisoner of Circumstance with producer ChanHays and Indiana Jones with producer RichGains.

Meanwhile, he’s no stranger to physical-only releases, either. This year, Bo also came through with the physical-exclusive ADU with producer Real Bad Man, which comprised of a couple of tracks based on Sade samples. Given merch for 1LB, it seems like this will be a seven-track effort, plus the instrumentals, which suggests a no-frills and all-killer approach that “They Vouching” attests to.
