“The Death Of Slim Shady”: The 7 Best Bars From Eminem

If you forgot to dress in all black for the occasion today (Friday, July 12), don’t fret: The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is less of a fatal blow and more like a Frankenstein-esque creator-versus-creation resuscitation. Eminem’s new album sees him tackle his alter ego in very similar ways as he’s done in the past, but more overtly and satirically than ever before. There are a whole lot of “offensive” bars to gasp at, some really funny flips to indulge in, and compelling reflections on his life and career.

While some of it is a mixed bag, we’re happy to say that the Detroit legend feels right at home, no matter which personality is taking the mic… or the gun, in this case. The new material on The Death Of Slim Shady (following “Houdini” and the BabyTron and Big Sean-assisted “Tobey“) is quite sharp. Through clever, nearly nauseating, but still nasty wordplay, Eminem expresses himself unabashedly and hangs all the best and worst corners of his mind outside of his butcher shop. We’re sure we missed plenty of highlights, so let us know what your favorite bar from this album was down in the comments section below.

“Renaissance”: F**k The Critics

Bar(s): Everything is either too tame or there’s too much anger / I didn’t like the beat, so I hated ‘Might Delete Later’ / You nerdy pricks would find something wrong with ’36 Chambers’

The Death Of Slim Shady kicks off, unsurprisingly, with a middle finger to what Eminem sees as fake rap fans bringing the genre’s icons down. The first line points to the culture’s hyper-obsession with both narratives of staleness or the “doing too much” argument, emphasizing that fans are more concerned with what they want to hear than with artists pursuing their vision. Em brings up J. Cole’s Might Delete Later mixtape as a recent example, possibly alluding to the hated-on Kendrick diss “7 Minute Drill” and how many didn’t like the first beat on that track. Finally, by alluding to the Wu-Tang Clan classic, he makes the case that legendary albums will live on far longer than the hate surrounding them. Maybe all it takes is time for the culture to understand these artistic drives and not jumping down MCs’ throats so eagerly and maliciously.

“Habits”: His Love Of South Park

Bar(s): Would this rhyme be okay if ‘South Park’ had did it? / Would it make you less angry if Cartman spit it?

Onto one of the more cheeky bars on The Death Of Slim Shady, which reiterates Eminem’s love of (and close parallels with) the classic animated TV show South Park. With this bar, he calls out the hypocrisy of people tolerating offensive content when it comes from an expected place, but condemning it when it appears in other, more “serious” areas. Perhaps, Marshall Mathers feels like people view him more critically because of his skill. Since he does have very sobering moments, maybe, they fail to realize that this skill is what gives his music his titanic quality and not the content within. While he’s definitely made this point in a lot of his past material, it sounds a bit fresher this time around as society opens and closes more and more spaces for irreverence, a practice that he’s all too comfortable with disrupting.

“Lucifer”: Eminem’s… Struggles?

Bar(s): Yeah, they listen to me like when Manson spoke / They say I don’t know struggle no more, that’s a joke / B***h, the f***ing elevator in my mansion’s broke / I have to walk like half a block to get a can of Coke

However, this is hands-down one of the funniest bars on the whole album, as Eminem is well-aware of his privilege, wealth, and most importantly, his attitude. Having to walk across a massive luxury property just to get a soda from the fridge is exactly the sort of rich, arrogant, ignorant, First World problem that someone like him would be so angry and frustrated over. But it’s still a flex, of course, or else there would be no “joke” to talk about. Also, this bar is among the only hilarious moments on The Death Of Slim Shady that doesn’t have to clown a celebrity, belittle a marginalized group, or rant about PC culture to do so. As such, it stands out as a vivid image on the project and, even though this catalog’s full of flaunting, rarely do we get glimpses into little annoyances that become big tantrums for superstars.

“Lucifer”: Slim Shady X K.Dot?

Bar(s): As far as smoke with me, I don’t think it’d be smart, so / Might as well go looking for smoke with Lamar, bro

It’s 2024; of course Eminem was going to throw in a reference or two to the biggest rap battle since Nas and Jay-Z. However, what makes this bar a bit more than just a shoutout is actually how it lyrically calls back to Kendrick Lamar’s “Euphoria,” which itself topically called back to Pusha T’s previous beef with Drake. “Yeah, f**k all that pushing P, let me see you push a T / You better off spinning again on him if you think about pushing me,” K.Dot raps there. So not only is Slim Shady also praising a fellow lyrical killer, but he’s also invoking their shared lineage in the Dr. Dre family tree. Also, we know that Em might’ve shaded Hov on “Tobey,” so to see more combative lines against the rap game on The Death Of Slim Shady was a given.

“Fuel”: Diddy’s Alleged Deeds

Bar(s): I’m like a R-A-P-E-R  / Got so many essays, S-As / Wait, he didn’t just spell the word ‘rapper’ and leave out a ‘P,’ did he? / R.I.P., rest in peace, Biggie / And ‘Pac, both of y’all should be living / But I ain’t tryna beef with him / ‘Cause he might put a hit on me like Keefe D did him

Along with Caitlyn Jenner and little people, Diddy was one of Eminem’s most consistent and eviscerated targets on The Death Of Slim Shady. While there are many bars on this topic to talk about, this line from “Fuel” (which has a stunning JID feature) is a very comprehensive one as far as the angles it tackles. The first part has some clever wordplay (“‘P,’ did he?” = P. Diddy, rapper = essays & r**er = SAs [sexual assaults]) about Sean Combs’ various lawsuits and accusations concerning sexual assault, abuse, and sex trafficking, all of which he’s denied. The second questions Puffy’s alleged involvement in Big and ‘Pac’s murders and Keefe D’s current court case for the death of the latter. You’ve also probably heard the “Antichrist” bar that mutes Cassie’s name, which stung more on impact. But this one adds the extreme lyrical reaches that fans love.

“Head Honcho”: Slim Shady Sons The Rap Game

Bar(s): These rappers, I’m above them, but punching down ain’t beneath me / Cold as the wind chill factor, but the fact is I don’t know when to chill / But every time I come out, they expect me to f***ing reinvent the wheel / Rappers get praised for spitting bars with less than the tenth of skill

Out of the many bars against lesser rappers on The Death Of Slim Shady, this one is perhaps Eminem’s most layered commentary on the matter. We all know he loves punching down, and we all know that he’s exactly the type of person to flip “wind chill” and “when to chill” in borderline corny fashion. But as fans and as artists, folks continually expect Marshall to bring something completely new to the table when he’s made his intentions and artistic drives clear and largely unchanged throughout his career. In addition, this alludes to the contrast between artistry and novelty, perhaps suggesting that just because things are new, we give them a pass on actually being good. Em toes this line very dangerously thanks to his aesthetic clashes whenever he does try something new, but his skill as a lyricist has never been in question.

“Temporary”: Marshall Mathers’ Family

Bar(s): But don’t you dare shed a tear, what I tell you? / “Straighten up, little soldier,” them times when I held you

Finally, we have to mention the emotional core of The Death Of Slim Shady: the 51-year-old’s tribute tracks to his daughter Hailie (“Temporary“) and his family (“Somebody Save Me”). This is after Eminem “kills” Slim Shady on “Guilty Conscience 2,” and after he talks about his addiction to controversy and the rough experiences that birthed it. So to hear him speak about Hailie saving him from this struggle through a quote that ties back to “Like Toy Soldiers” is a sweet and touching moment. These songs are his final messages for his family after he dies, saying what he couldn’t say on this earthly plane. Much like the rest of this album, it stands up against adversity, but this time, the obstacles aren’t Gen Z’s “wokeness.” Instead, we understand that if Slim Shady and his provocative nature died, then it’s Eminem’s family that brought Marshall Mathers back to life.

Zacari Comes Through With His Flashy & Stylish Debut Album “Bliss”

Zacari is someone who rose into the world of stardom through a now unforgettable feature. That of course is on the DAMN. cut “LOVE.” with the one and only Kendrick Lamar. Just two years after that 2017 collaboration, the Bakersfield, California singer/rapper would go on to sign with TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment). Since being with the label, he has put forth a handful of EPs (SOL & Run Wild Run Free) and a lot of singles. Some of which make Zacari’s debut album Bliss even two years later. That would be the title track with a feature from fellow label-mate Isaiah Rashad.

So, what took so long for Zacari to release Bliss? Well, he took the time to speak with Billboard on why this debut was important to get right. Part of it came from the studio sessions with Kendrick and ScHoolboy Q and just being around them throughout the creative processes. “When you’re in the room with these people like Kendrick and ScHoolboy, and they have their track record of albums and you’re watching them do it, [you see] what it really takes. It’s super important for the quality to not only be in the sound, but [also] in the writing and introspectiveness. Your pen is going to grow, you’re going to experience more things, and then you have to learn how to put them out in in the right way. I think that’s what takes time”.

We can see and hear that Zacari brought that mindset over to Bliss. The soundscapes are rich are very well mixed. Zacari’s vocals are consistently strong and uses those various sounds we mentioned to do some experimenting as well. While it still might take some time to fully develop a true “Zacari” track, this album is a great start to that journey.

Action Bronson Continues His Wonderfully Absurd & Whimsical Ways On “JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHLAVA THE DOCTOR”

Action Bronson never shies from being himself. It is one of the many redeeming qualities of the unapologetically blunt rapper who hails from Queens, New York. Overall, it is probably what he is most synonymous with, and we are happy that he stays true. To be honest, hip-hop can use more light-hearted and unique lyricists like him. The 2013 XXL Freshman is bringing out his usual self on another tight project for 2024 and it comes after a handful of singles. Action Bronson’s JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHLAVA THE DOCTOR is led by “NOURISH A THUG” and “SEGA”, both of which were released just two months before it.

Bronson is working alongside familiar faces for this project, both on the production and feature front. The former sees him recruit Daringer and The Alchemist once again, and the MC also chips into the creation of the beats. As for the accompanying performers, mainstays Julian Love and Yung Mehico (instrumentalists) are here, as well as Meyhem Lauren and Larry June. As we stated, Bronson is still wonderfully wild and colorful bars. For example, take a look at these from the jazzy and grand “HIDEO NOMO”. “Finish quick, she spit my seeds on the floor, a tree grew (Uh) / Then she continued seasoning the sea food / I got more karate movеs than Steven Seagal (That’s a lot)“.

Like Bronson’s past release, Cocodrillo Turbo, JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHLAVA THE DOCTOR, sees as him the titular doctor. He presents himself as this on several tracks, with one being “SEGA”. It is unclear what this all means for the album, but what we can tell you is that there are some great tracks to be had. That is thanks in part to the funky and catchy instrumentals (“SALVAJE” “KOMPRESSOR”). Give Bronson’s new outing a try with the links below.

Drake Executive Produces Gordo’s Upcoming Debut Album “DIAMONTE”

It’s been an undoubtedly hectic few months for Drake, but regardless, the hitmaker recently linked up with Gordo to work on his upcoming project. Earlier today, Gordo took to Instagram to announce DIAMONTE, his debut studio album. The project will be unveiled on July 26 and was executive produced by Drizzy himself.

Aside from Drake, listeners can expect to hear Maluma, Young Dolph, Feid, Nicki Nicole, and more on the LP. “It features work from artists I’ve looked up to and artists who inspire me,” Gordo says of the upcoming album. “Some I’ve known for years and others I’ve met more recently.” To get fans even more excited to hear what he has up his sleeve, he dropped off the cover art, a scenic shot of himself sitting on a boardwalk captured by photographer Ivan Amet Achao Acuna.

Gordo’s New Project DIAMONTE Drops July 26

“Most of the album’s production was done at home in Hawaii,” Gordo also adds. “I would produce until 6 PM, then I’d take a break, sit on my terrace, and watch the sunset while listening to the album and taking it all in. It’s an album you can listen to at home and at a 5 AM rave; it can be the pinnacle of your night or the perfect come-down after a long day. I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on.

He’s been teasing new music with Drake for a few months now, sharing a selfie alongside the Toronto-born performer back in May and asking fans if they were “ready for summer 2024.” What do you think of Drake executive producing Gordo’s upcoming debut album, DIAMONTE? Eminem Cleverly Shades Diddy On “Fuel” With JID

Eminem has always been someone who is never afraid to air things out on his albums, so it is no surprise he is doing it again on “Fuel”. This is one of 19 tracks off the Detroit MC’s highly-awaited 12th studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). “Fuel” features the likes of Georgia MC JID, a collaboration that makes a lot of sense on paper. Both have elite pen games, and their flows are almost always engaging. Thankfully, the track really comes together in all phases, and it makes “Fuel” one of the major highlights.

So, what is Eminem getting into on this cut? Well, with him being one of the most intimidating figures in the genre, it is not wise to diss him. For example, the hip-hop community saw what happened to mgk after “Rap Devil”. It seems the hate gives Eminem extra juice to unleash on any competitor that tries to step to him, and its why naming this song “Fuel” is such a W. However, what also makes this track fun is that Eminem is playing the role of the instigator. He is coming for Diddy’s neck and does so in a clever manner. He starts of the series of bars with, “I’m like a R-A-P-E-R (Yeah) / Got so many S-As (S-As), S-As (Huh) / Wait, he didn’t just spell the word, “Rapper” and leave out a P, did he? (Yep)

It combines wit and humor to the nth degree, talking about Diddy’s longlist of sexual assault allegations. Then, Em continues to unleash on him by referencing how Diddy allegedly hired Keefe D to put out hits and two of rap’s legends. “R.I.P., rest in peace, Biggie / And Pac, both of y’all should be living (Yep) / But I ain’t tryna beef with him (Nope) / ‘Cause he might put a hit on me like Keefe D did him“. Overall, Em and JID split great verses over a glitchy and dark trap production and it’s one we highly recommend.

Eminem Dismisses Kendrick Lamar Critics As “Complainers” On New Album

Eminem likes to name drop. He always litters his verses with contemporary artists, whether it be in the form of praise or mockery. He poked fun at Megan Thee Stallion on his single “Houdini,” for example. On the opening song to his new album, however, Em name drops a handful of legendary artists. He cites the most recent work they released, and undermines the criticism they’ve gotten from fans. In the rapper’s estimation, someone like Kendrick Lamar should be getting even more respect for the caliber of music he’s making.

“Renaissance” isn’t a particularly long song, but it sets the tone for The Death of Slim Shady. Eminem uses dense wordplay to illustrate how insane he (or rather, Slim Shady) is. As the song reaches its end, though, he decides to speak up for his peers. Kendrick Lamar is the first name on his list. “‘Cause I don’t see no fans, all I see’s a bunch of complainers,” he raps. He then proceeds to assume the perspective of said complainers, and make statements that he’s vehemently against. “‘Kendrick’s album was cool but it didn’t have any bangers,’” he mockingly adds. “‘Wayne’s album or Ye’s, couldn’t tell you which one was lamer.’”

Eminem Loves Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale Album

Eminem has made his admiration for Kendrick Lamar clear in the past. The two rappers collaborated on the 2013 song “Love Game,” and Em has labeled him a “top tier lyricist” on multiple occasions. Eminem was also vocal in his adoration for Lamar’s polarizing album, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. The same album that “didn’t have any bangers,” according to Eminem’s designated “complainers. Em tweeted that he was absolutely floored by Mr. Morale shortly after it dropped in 2022. “This Kendrick album is f*cking ridiculous,” he wrote. “I’m speechless.”

Kendrick Lamar has returned the praise. During a 2016 interview with GQ, the Compton rapper claimed that Eminem was one of his biggest influences. He cited Em’s 2000 album, The Marshall Mathers LP, in particular. “The day I heard The Marshall Mathers LP, I was just like, How does that work,” he explained. “His time is impeccable. When he wants to fall off the beat, it’s impeccable. These are [the] things that, through experience and time, I had to learn… I got my clarity just studying Eminem.” Talent recognizes talent.

Eminem Gives Fans A Worthy Curtain Call With “The Death Of Slim Shady”

Eminem took his time with this one. The Death of Slim Shady feels like the most important Em release since The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Which, not coincidentally, is considered to be one of the rapper’s last good albums. The rollout has been mysterious. The music videos have been entertaining. And the Slim Shady concept has lots of potential. Fortunately, the finished product delivers on the hype. The Death of Slim Shady is a strong Eminem album, his best of the decade. The reception to the singles, particularly “Houdini,” was mixed, but both fit within the context of the album’s framework.

Eminem urged fans to listen to the album in order, and, true to his word, the songs play better with the context of what came before. “Renaissance” is jolt of an opener, with Em’s typical wordplay in top form. “Habits” and “Trouble” dig into the darker side of the Slim Shady alter ego, with production that doesn’t overpower the lyrics. The darker songs are what work best on the album, like “Antichrist” and the tense “Bad One.” They are not only catchier than something like “Brand New Dance,” but they are progressions of the Slim Shady sound that don’t have to rely on cheap nostalgia. Em has admitted that he’s struggled to evolve with the times. Ironically, it’s in saying goodbye to his breakout character that he finally manages to do so.

Eminem Locks His Alter-Ego In A Basement In New “The Death Of Slim Shady” Trailer

Eminem’s new album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is right around the corner, yet the promo material for it hasn’t slowed down one bit. Moreover, he shared yet another trailer for the new project after already revealing its conceptual tracklist flow and imploring fans to listen to it in order. In it, Slim Shady (presumably) sits with his hands tied to a chair in the basement, watching a news report on how the Detroit rapper is trying to “cancel himself” with this new LP. In the video’s description, it makes reference to the “Real Slim Shady” bar about locking people up in basements, although in that classic track, the victim was Dr. Dre.

Furthermore, this rollout for The Death Of Slim Shady has roped in other pop culture happenings today, such as Eminem embracing the “Hawk Tuah!” meme while visiting his alter ego’s gravesite. It’s all a pretty campy and overt display of showmanship, but this is Marshall Mathers we’re talking about: is the cartoonish vibe really surprising you? Regardless, he’s certainly not slouching on the lyrical end, at least with his latest single “Tobey” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron. Whatever this new album has in store, there’s a good chance that its story will make all these extracurricular promotions make much more sense.

Eminem’s Latest The Death Of Slim Shady Teaser

As for previous trailers for this album, one of them showed Slim Shady rising from the dead, so maybe the persona’s “death” will be a little more complicated. After all, Eminem has “retired” and “come back” so many times now that it’s hard to tell when he really means to emulate his other half. Perhaps this record will instead reflect on whether or not this “death” is even possible, since an aspect of his contemporary output is that he doesn’t make that distinction as obvious as before. Still, there are a lot of possibilities and angles for Em to explore here.

While Eminem’s chart performance with the new singles wasn’t anything out of this world, we can expect the album to be an absolute smash. Some fans want that conceptual greatness that’s been teased, others want straight-up bars, and many just want something new from him. No matter what road the “Houdini” spitter chooses, it’ll be a fun one to travel alongside him. So join us in eagerly anticipating The Death Of Slim Shady, which will be out in just a couple of hours as of writing this article.
