R.I.P. Rico Wade: A Pivotal Bridge In Hip-Hop’s 50-Year History

“I just think timing is everything,” Rico Wade opens up the first song on Killer Mike’s Grammy Award-winning 2023 album, MICHAEL. “Like, n***a, this it. This, this one right here… That ain’t easy. Stay motivated, stay inspired. I owe it to myself, stay down on it. And it ain’t been hard throughout the journey: it’s been a journey.” On April 12, 2024, Wade passed away at the age of 52, and Mike offered a touching tribute. “I am Praying for your wife and Children, I am praying for the Wade family, I am praying for us all. I deeply appreciate your acceptance into The Dungeon Family, mentorship, Friendship and Brotherhood. Idk where I would be without ya’ll.”

Much like the Run The Jewels MC, countless hip-hop artists, legends, and fans have much to thank Rico Wade for. From Outkast to Future, from Goodie Mob to Janelle Monáe, and even acts outside of their Dungeon Family collective like TLC, Ludacris, and more, it’s clear that the East Point native is among the key reasons why the South (and Atlanta, in particular) has such an omnipresence right now. Not just hip-hop, but music and pop culture at large. He lives on in many ways: as a host, a talent judge, a gifted producer alongside Sleepy Brown and Ray Murray as Organized Noize, a curator, a liaison, an organizer… But perhaps most importantly, Rico is a bridge. He is the crux through which 50 years of hip-hop history can be examined, as one of his greatest achievements was honoring the old and shaping the new.

The Growth Of The Southern MC In Rap’s Ecosystem

While Houston already created a blueprint for Southern rap through acts like the Geto Boys, the talent that Rico Wade introduced to the “Dungeon” (the studio in his mom’s house’s basement) proved instrumental in furthering the identity of the Southern MC as opposed to their East Coast and West Coast counterparts. They were not simply backpack rappers, cold-blooded lyrical killers, or hot-headed gangsters. They could be a little of everything with unique self-awareness, diverse melodic sensibilities, and palpable passions for soul and cultivating the mind. “It was street without the crime,” Rap Pages editor Allen S. Gordon said of their content. “How do we live, how do we survive? How do we encourage each other, how do we kick it, how do we have fun? None of it is degrading.”

For examples of this, look no further than André 3000, who as early as Outkast’s first single “Player’s Ball” (on which Rico Wade provides the intro), previewed his eventual space in GOAT conversations alongside legendary lyricists like Nas, Ice Cube, and Scarface. On the flip side, look at one of the Dungeon Family’s late-era bloomers: Meathead, or as he’s better known today, Future. While he may not have the same weight behind his pen, he’s easily one of the most influential artists in music period working today thanks to his auto-tuned crooning and other aesthetic innovations, his earworm flows, and that same woozy, soulful, bass-heavy, and ATL-drenched idiosyncrasy that he attributes to his time with his big cousin Rico in the Dungeon. “Nobody could ever do what Rico Wade did for me,” Pluto said in 2014. “Everything I know about music, I know because of Rico.”

Rico Wade & Organized Noize’s Production: Defining The Dirty South… And Beyond

Ever since the very early 1990s, Rico Wade’s mentorship, instincts, talent curation, and sensibilities put innovative and impressive rappers at the forefront no matter the style. But of course, that’s also because of the production that Organized Noize perfected. In the face of sample-based and therefore expensive production styles dominating the Coasts (and thus, all of mainstream rap), the Dungeon Family cut down and got live: bass, multiple different drum sounds for each new song, horns, guitars… you name it. Just listen to the lushness of “Crumblin’ Erb” by Outkast, “The Day After” by Goodie Mob, or “Sumthin’ Wicked This Way Comes” by TLC and Andre 3000. However, the percussion was still rooted in grimy and familiar rap rhythms, and in terms of songwriting, Organized Noize knew exactly how to capture the culture.

Rico Wade provided plenty of hits and commercial smashes to etch Organized Noize into many popular styles of music of the time in addition to the musty underground. The most notable of these is likely TLC’s “Waterfalls,” whose combinations of vocal harmonies, guitar plucks, and horns are Dungeon all the way. While Wade definitely built off of established g-funk and other scenes, it was this overtly colorful production that most tangibly laid the groundwork for the Pharrells, the Kanye Wests, the Tyler, The Creators, and the JIDs of rap history.

Why Rico Will Forever Represent The Roots And The Fruits

Rico Wade’s place in hip-hop history will never fall victim to old-head biases or new-school ignorance. One of the most interesting ways in which he links the roots and the contemporary fruits of rap is how he welcomed the first and final waves of the Dungeon Family for two completely different reasons. Outkast had to audition and ended up delivering 30-minute-plus verses, which impressed Wade and earned his trust and support. Meanwhile, when he found out that Future was his cousin, they started to speak about Rico’s father’s side of the family that Fewtch was connected to, which he knew very little of because many of them were incarcerated. The trap icon stuck around in the Dungeon and soaked up so much game, all simply because he was family.

At the end of the day, neither approach is more valid or heartening than the other, and they resulted in amazing art for the culture regardless. On MICHAEL, the album that the late legend opened up just last year, “SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS” reunites representatives from three distinct waves of the Dungeon Family: André 3000, Killer Mike, and Future. 30 years after “Player’s Ball,” and 50 years since hip-hop was born, he continued to evolve the game, to fuse it with other beloved and important music, to represent his city to the fullest, to embrace the next talents, to preserve the culture’s foundations, and to always create something greater and more compelling than the sum of the old and the new. It was extremely hard for Rico Wade to forever be the bridge in hip-hop history. But to him, it wasn’t hard throughout the journey: it was just a journey.

Taylor Swift Seemingly Targets Kim Kardashian And Even Kanye West On New “Diss Track”

Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West have had their problems in the past. The Swift and Kanye feud dates all the way back to the VMAs, 15 years ago. Furthermore, this feud extended to Kim Kardashian thanks to the infamous “Famous” verse and subsequent leaked phone call. Since that time, it has become clear that the whole thing left a sour taste in Taylor’s mouth. Although, for the most part, she has stayed quiet on it. Now, however, it seems as though she is making her feelings known with some subliminals on a new track.

Today, Swift dropped off The Tortured Poets Department. On top of these 16 tracks, she delivered 15 new songs in the form of The Anthology. On this deluxe version, there is a track called “thanK you aIMee.” Fans immediately clocked the fact that the capitalized letter spell Kim. While this might just be a coincidence, there are numerous lyrics that could be interpreted as about Kardashian. ““All that time you were throwing punches, I was building something / And I can’t forgive the way you made me feel / Screamed ‘F*ck you, Aimee’ to the night sky, as the blood was gushin’ / But I can’t forget the way you made me heal,” she sings.

Taylor Swift Takes Subliminals

Moreover, there are lyrics towards the end of the song in which Swift acknowledges she has changed the name of the person she is talking about in the song. She also alludes to the person’s kids singing her songs not knowing they are about them. Uproxx noted that this could very well be a North West reference as North has sung Taylor’s songs on social media before. Ultimately, this all seems very petty, especially given how big of an artist Taylor has become. That said, beef seems to be on the menu these days, and pop stars are not exempt from wanting a taste.

Let us know what you think of the new Taylor Swift song above, in the comments section below. Do you think that she is taking aim at Kim Kardashian here? Have you listened to the Taylor Swift album? REASON Explains Why He Rapped Over Drake’s “8AM In Charlotte”

REASON recently dropped a killer freestyle over the song “8AM In Charlotte” by the 6ix God, which is optically a pretty interesting move considering that he’s signed to TDE. If you’re reading this from under your rock in the middle of nowhere, Kendrick Lamar is in some pretty heavy beef with Drizzy right now… or is it the other way around? Either way, the West Coast MC noticed two problems with the general reaction to his freestyle. The first is that people called this instrumental a “Drake beat,” and the second is that he’s doing this to pick a side against K.Dot, who’s not even on Top Dawg anymore but obviously still has some strong bonds with his former parters and label mates.

“It’s “Conductor’s” beat not drakes. I love good production!” REASON replied on Twitter to a page posting his freestyle. With that first statement, and a reply affirming that the beat is actually produced by Conductor Williams and Mario Luciano, he rightfully attempts to combat producer erasure in hip-hop discussions, something we should all do a better job of avoiding. Also, the “I Don’t Trust You! MC seemed to avoid taking specific stances with that last sentence, simply standing by his love of good production. As such, maybe this doesn’t have to be the “civil war” that we’re all painting it as.

REASON Freestyles Over Conductor Williams & Mario Luciano’s “8AM In Charlotte” Beat: Snippet

In fact, good production was also the reason behind REASON’s co-sign of Drake’s Kendrick Lamar diss, commonly referred to as “Push Ups.” However, this was just co-signing the new beat for it, not the actual lyrics or sentiment against Mr. Morale. But for fans who are familiar with his trajectory with TDE, you know that he has plenty of conflict with the label and is actively trying to get out of his deal. They butted heads over realized potential, album delays, and an overall lack of support from the higher-ups that they attribute to not making the right moves as an artist. Furthermore, this complicated web is one that Aubrey Graham’s shots at Top Dawg Entertainment might slightly illuminate.

Still, that’s just speculation at this point, as there’s no clear link between all of these parties and situations. Elsewhere, the TDE camp also reacted to J. Cole apologizing to Kendrick Lamar from dropping a diss of his own. But your biggest takeaway from all this should be very simple: check this dope freestyle with On The Radar out! For more news and the latest updates on REASON and Drake, stick around on HNHH.

Drake Shows Up For Nicki Minaj At Toronto Show

Drake is easily one of the biggest artists in the history of music. Overall, his records speak for themselves. Although some like to pontificate on whether or not he is the best hip-hop artist of all time, there is no doubt that his influence is felt. During his come-up, there were certain artists he was linked to thanks to label affiliation and overall chemistry. One such artist was none other than Nicki Minaj. He and Nicki have maintained their friendship over the years, and they still support each other’s endeavors.

In fact, Drake came through for Nicki in a big way the other day. While trying to get into Montreal, she was having trouble with the border. As she explains, Drake made a few boss calls and was able to get her in. Although she started her Montreal show extremely late, she was able to get in her set, and move on to Toronto where she performed last night. As it turns out, Drake pulled up to last night’s show, and could be seen in one of the loges up top. He seemed to be having a good time, and it was cool to see him supporting a friend.

Drake In The Building

After all, the Scotiabank Arena is a place that he is most definitely accustomed to. The Toronto arena is home to the Toronto Raptors and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Moreover, Drake has performed countless shows there at this point. One day, he will probably have some sort of jersey in the rafters over there. Either way, despite all of his recent feuds, he seems to be enjoying life, and living on with business as usual.

Let us know what you think of this showing of support from Drake towards Nicki Minaj, in the comments section down below. Do you think that they have another collaboration in the tuck? Joe Budden Accuses Drake Of Spreading Kendrick Lamar AI Tracks

Like most hip-hop fans right now, Joe Budden has a lot of questions about the explosive beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar right now. Moreover, a big point of contention for fans is where these Kendrick A.I. leaks are coming from, which some believe are real diss tracks. However, close listens show that something’s up, and one TikTok producer in particular came forward to explain how he made that “diss” using artificial intelligence technology to replicate K.Dot’s voice. Furthermore, the Slaughterhouse MC thinks that the Toronto superstar is actually behind these leaks and A.I. verses, as he’s been accused before of using online bots and other methods to troll and harass his enemies on social media.

“To address some of that stuff we talked about earlier with all of this A.I. stuff,” Joe Budden began. “Don’t kill me, I’m just a messenger here. I have it on good information that that’s just Drake. Drake is responsible for the Kendrick leaks, A.I. leaks, Drake and the bots.” “That makes sense,” his co-host added. “He plays the bot game, he plays the Internet game. There’s been issues with other rappers where they got thousands of bots. There was a time where, if you said Pusha T’s name, your mentions would get flooded with bots that have nothing… ‘Pusha T is really half-lizard.’”

Joe Budden’s Theory On Drake Being Behind Kendrick Lamar AI Diss Tracks: Listen

“Pusha T has accused Drake of this, salamander or some s**t,” Joe Budden continued. “Meg has accused Drake of this. People have accused Nicki of this, I think, in the past. You can’t even accuse somebody of these things if you don’t know that game. Right? So these are people that understand that game.

“This would explain Drake every day posting, ‘Come out. Is it today? Is today the day? When are we gonna hear this?‘” he concluded. “Sounds like he’s just trying to take some of the luster off of whatever is coming. And he’s playing Internet games and A.I. games to do it. Apple’s son.” For more news and the latest updates on Joe Budden, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar, come back to HNHH.

Travis Scott Receives Praise From The Barbz After Scintillating “FTCU (SLEEZEMIX)” Verse

Travis Scott is easily one of the biggest artists in hip-hop right now. Overall, his album Utopia was a bit polarizing, however, it was still one of the biggest albums of 2023. Furthermore, he went on a tour that also did extremely well. Now, he is on a bit of a break, however, he is still very much in high demand. Even if his features have been hit or miss, artists know that his fanbase will consume anything he does. The artist streams incredibly well, and it has led to appearances on major albums and song remixes.

On Friday, Scott was on Nicki Minaj’s SLEEZEMIX version of “FTCU.” This new version of the track also came with features from the likes of Chris Brown and Sexyy Red. You can listen to the official audio, below. As you will hear, Scott got his very own beat switch. This is kind of amusing when you consider how Scott is known for his beat switches and expensive-sounding production. Either way, he certainly delivers a solid performance here.

As you can see in the tweets below, fans were feeling Scott’s performance on the track. There was a whole lot of praise being dished out, especially from the Barbz. It felt like the Barbz used to hate Scott thanks to the Queen and Astroworld sales debacle. However, now, everyone has made up, and some solid music is being created. If you can get praise from the Barbz, it is an accomplishment in and of itself. Hopefully, Scott uses this verse to build momentum for more solo material.

Fans React

Drake Really Did Send A Cease & Desist To French Montana, Gamma CEO Says Record Execs Love Rap Beef

Drake and Rick Ross are currently engaged in a petty feud that has been going on for an entire week at this point. Overall, Ross unfollowed Drake on social media, which subsequently led to some Ross bars on “Push Ups.” From there, Ross delivered “Champagne Moments” in which he alleged that Drizzy had once hit French Montana with a cease & desist over a verse he was going to release. Fans were a bit confused by this and weren’t so sure about the veracity of the claim. Although now, it seems like we have confirmation that this was true.

During an appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, Gamma CEO Larry Jackson spoke about the allegations against Drake in regards to the now infamous cease & desist. As he explains, Drake really did send it to French. “The cease-and-desist letter was a real thing. I thought that was really funny…but other than that, I got nothing,” Jackson said. “We all have different senses of humor. I thought it was funny. I didn’t think anybody was really trying to be nefarious. I just thought it was a joke.”

Drake Is Beefing With Everyone

Meanwhile, Jackson went on to deliver some interesting comments about rap beef and their implications. In his eyes, the label executives are the ones who are really winning right now. They get the money from the diss tracks that are dropped. Moreover, because these diss tracks stream well, it just makes the label more money. Ultimately, it serves a lot of these label execs for the beef to continue. This is a similar take to what Vince Staples said just a couple of weeks ago.

Let us know what you think of these comments from Larry Jackson, in the comments section down below. Do you agree that this beef is only benefitting the executives? Do you think that Kendrick Lamar will eventually respond to Drake? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will continue to keep you informed on all of your favorite artists and their upcoming projects.

New Kendrick Lamar Leak Seemingly Makes Reference To Drake’s Mom

Kendrick Lamar has been quiet since he dropped “Like That.” The aftermath of his verse has been absolutely chaotic, with diss tracks popping up seemingly every day. Regardless of who tries to clown Drake on Instagram, though, the main event remains Lamar vs Drake. They are the big two, now that J. Cole has taken himself out of competition. Drake responded to “Like That” with “Push Ups,” and now fans are waiting for K. Dot to fire back. A new leak suggests he may already be loading up his weapon.

On April 18, a snippet of an untitled song surfaced on X (formerly Twitter). The snippet is 22 seconds long, and features Lamar (or what sounds like Lamar) crooning over a soul beat. The mood is silly, as people can be heard laughing in the background, but the lyrics give reason for pause. “Sweet p***y Sandra, please come home,” the rapper sings. “Sweet p***y Sandra, please don’t go, whoa whoa.” Lamar fans may not the similarities between the snippet and “untitled 04,” which appeared on the untitled, unmastered project. The big difference here, though, is that Lamar is singing the name of Drake’s mother, Sandra Graham.

Kendrick Lamar Sings About A Woman Named Sandra

Drake is famously close with his mother, and mentions her frequently in his music. She made a cameo in the music video for “Started from the Bottom,” and even had the song “Sandra’s Rose” named after her. It’s worth noting that very little information about the leak has been uncovered. Genius has made a lyrics page under the name “Sweet P***y Sandra” (what else), and the producer credited on the song is DJ Dahi. Lamar and Dahi have collaborated on “Money Trees” and “LOYALTY,” so it makes sense they’d reunite for such a monumental a diss.

The lack of information does force one to question the leak’s validity, however. Kendrick Lamar was just linked to a diss track titled “One Shot,” and days after its release, a TikTok producer admitted he made it with AI. It’s getting harder to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not, so a healthy amount of skepticism is good with leaks like “Sweet P***y Sandra.” If it is real, though, the battle between Lamar and Drake is going to turn into an all out war.

Doja Cat Reaches Chart Milestone After Her Coachella Performance

Doja Cat has had a unique career path. She broke through with a viral song and exploded into pop stardom in the span of just a few years. She’s one of the most consistent hitmakers of the last half decade, and yet, she had never topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Charts. For all her success on the Billboard Hot 100, Doja has struggled to crossover with genre audiences. Until now, that is. Doja Cat bodied the Coachella stage with her recent performance, and it gave her latest single an unexpected boost.

The performance in question took place on April 14, and the single in question is “Agora Hills.” Doja’s eccentric slow jam performed well on the Hot 100, peaking at number seven, but it was R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay that proved tougher. It peaked higher than any of Doja Cat’s previous entries, at number three, but it wasn’t until her Coachella performance that it finally claimed the number one spot. According to Billboard, “Agora Hills” increased in weekly plays by a staggering 19%. It’s fitting that “Agora Hills” be Doja’s first R&B/Hip-Hop chart topper, given that it samples the classic R&B song “All I Do Is Think of You” by Troop.

“Agora Hills” Is Doja Cat’s First R&B/Hip-Hop Number One

It’s also appropriate that Doja’s R&B/Hip-Hop breakthrough came on the album Scarlet. The artist made it very clear that she wanted to ditch her radio-friendly aesthetic for a darker hip-hop sound. The singles “Attention” and “Paint the Town Red” reflect this darker sound, while “Agora Hills” and “Go Off” split the difference between pop and R&B. Finding the right balance was the trick, according to an interview Doja gave to Harper’s Bazaar.

The artist told the outlet that her goal with Scarlet was to mix stories and bops. “It’s a nice mixture of both,” she explained. “I think this project is a really fun canvas for me to play with my rap skills and talk about what’s going on in my life. But I’m not abandoning who I was and what I know about pop and singing and that aspect of music.” Doja’s creative shift proved fruitful, as Scarlet has already been certified platinum and spawned number one singles on multiple charts.

Lucky Daye Is Ready To Shake Up Our World On His New Single, ‘HERicane’

It’s our lucky night. R&B hitmaker Lucky Daye is kicking of the era to his upcoming third album. Tonight (April 19), he has shared his new single, “HERicane.”

Full of metaphors pertaining to natural phenomena, “HERicane” features Lucky ready to get au natural with a special lady.

“I’ll take you to the top floor, baby / If you want it, don’t let me go, hold on, just ride / What you wanna do? I’ll drive you through midnight / Let it rain, baby, rain / Till we slide into the heart of hurricane,” he sings on the songs chorus.

The song features production by D’Mile, who gives the song a rocky, electric guitar-drive groove, paired with sexy, soulful vocals. Late last year, Lucky Daye shared the Bruno Mars-produced single, “That’s You.” In a recent interview on 105.3 R&B, Lucky detailed his upcoming album, saying that his upcoming project will be more happy in tone, after his previous two album were comprised of love songs and break-up ballads.

“It’s about being grounded in chaos,” Lucky said. “Whether it’s a relationship, or whether it’s the industry it’s all about not being afraid to be yourself, not being afraid to spread your wings.”

You can see a video performance of “HERicane” above.
