Who Is Myaap? Meet The Milwaukee Rapper

The formula for making a rap hit has changed a lot over the past five decades but at the same time, it seems that one almost surefire way to craft an inescapable bop is do what rap’s first-ever hit did: Sample a previous hit and turn it into something that would make the original creators’ heads spin.

We’ve seen a lot of the biggest hits in hip-hop lately do just that. Latto’s “Big Energy” liberally interpolates Tom Tom Club’s 1981 dance floor rocker “Genius Of Love,” while more recently, Doja Cat revivified Dianne Warwick’s “Walk On By” with “Paint The Town Red” and Coi Leray’s “Players” became the latest in a long line of songs looping Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message.”

In the same way, Milwaukee rapper Myaap is on the cusp of a huge breakout of her own thanks to a sample coming from one of the unlikeliest, un-hop-hop-iest song imaginable. “Getting To It,” which — like many of the aforementioned hits — derives much of its propulsion from an endless stream of TikTok videos utilizing the sound, employs Abba’s mournful 1976 hit “Dancing Queen,” slotting in blunt boasts over the original’s bright, disco production for a sweet and spicy blend that only needs the proper clearances to take off.

(Myaap’s music video for the track was wiped from YouTube over a copyright strike from Universal Music Group, but make no mistake — if it continues to gain momentum on TikTok, I have little doubt it’ll be back.)

So, who is the Milwaukee artist and what’s making her such a draw?

Well, unlike fellow Milwaukee star Lakeyah, she sticks to more of a locally-grown production style on tracks like “Wham” and “Party Crackin.” While Lakeyah’s connection with Atlanta-based hit factory Quality Control Music has put her on the national radar, Myaap’s approach ensures a dug-in hardcore hometown fanbase that’d be hard to uproot. From such a solid foundation, any moves she makes will likely be amplified by her hometown supporters — and if they can get loud enough, it’ll make it hard as hell for outsiders to ignore.

She’s also proven adept at capturing attention on TikTok — hard enough to do with the way that app is set up — and if she can keep getting minor viral hits there, it’s only a matter of time until interest in her off-platform music hits critical mass. But the key will almost certainly be whether “Gettin To It” can make a return to streaming services, as it’s clearly a hit in the same fashion as Sexyy Red‘s “Ah Thousand Jugs” — and we all know where Big Sexyy ended up: on top.

E-40 Praises NBA YoungBoy: “He’s An Old Soul”

E-40 had some major props for NBA YoungBoy while speaking about the Baton Rouge rapper during a recent interview with Billboard. Discussing their collaboration, “Get My Life Right,” the legendary Bay Area native described YoungBoy as an “old soul.”

“He’s an old soul,” E-40 said to the outlet. “He’s been there before. That’s a deep, young man. I always liked him. Birdman hit me one day and was like, ‘Hey, YoungBoy wants you on one of his songs.’ He sent it to me, we connected, and I knocked out one for his album.”

Later in the interview, E-40 also spoke about his relationship with Nipsey Hussle. In doing so, he revealed that he was initially set to appear on the rapper’s Victory Lap track, “Grinding All My Life,” but he couldn’t get the verse submitted in time. “He didn’t tell me when he needed it back,” E-40 recalled. “Next thing you know, I was like, ‘Oh man. This one of them ones too.’ Sometimes I’ll say, ‘When you need it back?’ We didn’t even discuss it. He just sent it. Next thing you know, he put a ticket to the face. I was like, ‘Damn.’ But, man, I miss Nipsey. He was really a good dude. He always showed me respect. He really patterned his hustle after mine. I really miss him and I think he would have really made an impact in rap right now if he was still living.”

Looking ahead for E-40, he also teased a follow-up to Rule of Thumb, Rule 1 that will be dropping in 2024. He collaborated with Gucci Mane, Larry June, Too Short, and NBA YoungBoy on the first project. Be on the lookout for further updates on E-40 on HotNewHipHop.

Lizzo Claims Designer’s Harassment Lawsuit Is False & Obscene

The lawsuits against Lizzo have quieted down as 2023 rolls to a close, but they’re still persistent. Moreover, there are two big cases on the floor right now, one from her former dancers whom she allegedly harassed. A similar harassment lawsuit came forth from designer Asha Daniels, who worked on the singer’s Special tour earlier this year. In it, she claims that she faced a “culture of racism and bullying” while working with her, which coincide with the dancers’ allegations. Regardless, the Detroit native’s legal team recently blasted this legal filing from Daniels and stand by their client, positing that the designer is a “disgruntled” former employee who “played hooky” one day of a show and was cut three weeks into their trek.

Furthermore, Lizzo’s attorney Martin D. Singer filed a motion to dismiss this case in Los Angeles court on Friday (December 15), just like the defense did with the dancers’ case. In it, he labeled Daniels’ side of the story as “meritless and salacious.” “During her brief employment by [Lizzo’s touring company], Plaintiff refused to comply with instructions from her supervisors and tour management, failed to perform the work that she was assigned and, eventually, just played hooky and refused to show up for work,” the motion reads. “Unsurprisingly, she was terminated after abandoning her post on the day of a concert in Paris, France.”

In addition, Singer and company also alleged that this lawsuit against Lizzo should vanish because of logistical errors. This stems from Daniels’ residence in New York while she’s filing the case in California. “[Plaintiff] is a New York resident who worked for a Delaware corporation in Europe,” Singer expressed. “She has alleged no nexus to California.” Meanwhile, the designer’s lawyers called this “yet another Hail Mary by Lizzo’s team to try to shift blame to the victims” for her supposed behavior. “Lizzo and her lawyers can continue trying to rationalize her illegal and wretched conduct. But we remain committed to seeking justice for our clients. [We] look forward to our day in court where Lizzo can explain her behavior in a public forum.”

The Cuz I Love You hitmaker’s team hired Daniels in February of 2023 to handle wardrobe of her design. Her suit includes the claim that dancers had to change “little to no privacy” as “primarily white males [of the stage crew] would lewdly gawk, sneer, and giggle” at them. When the designer expressed concern, the wardrobe manager allegedly “laughed” and told her to keep quiet. For more news and the latest updates on Lizzo, stick around on HNHH.

Nicki Minaj Lands 14 “Pink Friday 2” Songs On This Week’s Hot 100

Despite the massive influx of Christmas music that occupies the Hot 100 this time of year, Nicki Minaj still managed an impressive showing on the chart. A week after releasing her highly anticipated new album Pink Friday 2 more than half of the album’s 22 tracks made their debut on the Hot 100. It puts her among pretty impressive company with artists like Drake, Bad Bunny, and Taylor Swift who made similar album dumps earlier this year.

Leading the way is Nicki’s collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert “Everybody.” The song became the instant breakout hit of the bunch and had numerous celebrities sharing videos of themselves dancing to it on social media. The song made its debut at number 26 on the Hot 100, one of three songs that landed inside the top 50 on the chart. “Needle” which featured Drake continued the rapper’s massive year on the Hot 100 landing at number 34. Nicki Minaj Has 14 Songs On The Hot 100

She also released the songs “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” and “Last Time I Saw You” which peaked at number 13 and 23 respectively.

Nicki Minaj had an even stronger debut on the Billboard 200. Pink Friday 2 debuted on the chart over the weekend at the very top spot. jack harlow 2023
William Wark

Jack Harlow is bringing it back home — and this time, he’s taking us with him for the full experience. Back in November, Harlow returned to his home state of Kentucky to kick off his third annual No Place Like Home Tour, during which he performs in various venues across the state. During the final show in Lexington, footage was captured as Harlow performed at Rupp Arena, to later be used in a special concert film and documentary.

On January 4, 2024, fans will be able to tune into Jack Harlow No Place Like Home: A VR Concert through the Metaverse. On that day, fans can watch the concert film, and get an intimate look at the making of the tour, beginning at 5 p.m. PT. Using the Meta Quest VR headset, fans will be able to get a full, first-person experience of the concert.

“At some point last year I realized how much of my home state I’ve never seen. I suddenly got this urge to take a tour bus across Kentucky with all my childhood friends. So that’s what we did,” Harlow said in a statement. “Six shows in different towns across the state, with the final stop being in Lexington. We decided my first show at the historic Rupp Arena was the perfect moment to capture in VR. Enjoy.”

Those who aren’t able to tune into the live premiere will be able to replay the concert until January 25.

Every Monday, Billboard unveils the top 10 songs on the latest Hot 100 chart. The most recent rankings, for the chart dated December 23, are out now, so let’s run down who had this week’s biggest hits.

10. Dean Martin — “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!”

The holiday music takeover is nearly complete as this Dean Martin classic rounds out this week’s top 10.

9. Tate McRae — “Greedy”

McRae’s hit is one of just two non-holiday songs remaining on the new Hot 100. This follows her appearance on The Tonight Show last week.

8. The Ronettes — “Sleigh Ride”

This is the first time in the top 10 this holiday season for The Ronettes as “Sleigh Ride” bounds from No. 14 last week to No. 8 now.

7. Andy Williams — “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”

Williams had a modest ascent this week, up from No. 8 to No. 7, with his 1963 Christmas hit.

6. Jack Harlow — “Lovin On Me”

Once again, Harlow interrupts the holiday party as “Lovin On Me” remains in the top 10 despite the holly jolly season. Speaking of…

5. Burl Ives — “A Holly Jolly Christmas”

“A Holly Jolly Christmas” rose to No. 5 this week, so it’s now just one spot away from its all-time high at No. 4.

4. Wham! — “Last Christmas”

“Last Christmas,” meanwhile, holds steady at No. 4, a spot that represents its Hot 100 peak.

3. Bobby Helms — “Jingle Bell Rock”

Bobby Helms’ tune is also at its all-time high at No. 3, as there are two massive Christmas classics that keep getting in its way.

2. Brenda Lee — “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”

This has been a historic holiday season for Brenda Lee, who managed to hold off Mariah Carey’s timeless hit from reaching No. 1 for two chart-topping weeks. The tides have turned now, though.

1. Mariah Carey — “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

After Lee’s temporary roadblock, Carey is back at No. 1 for a fifth consecutive holiday season, although this means the two have combined for a joint record: This is the first time two holiday songs have been No. 1 in a single holiday season. This is the 13th total week at No. 1 for “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

DJ Akademiks Slams 6ix9ine’s Ex For Claiming He Slept With The Rapper

6ix9ine’s ex Jade broke the Internet on Sunday (December 17) when she claimed that he and DJ Akademiks have been “f***ing for a very long time.” Of course, social media reacted to this quite wildly, especially considering that both personalities get their fair share of sometimes due, sometimes undue hate online. On top of that, folks couldn’t wait to see how either would respond to this, although we could’ve definitely guessed what they’d say. To prove that, the streamer and commentator recently hopped on his livestream to respond to Jade’s claims. Throughout, he let out some very disparaging remarks against her own alleged sex life.

“So first and foremost, if you’re looking for the obvious, me and 6ix9ine has never ever been anything but friends like any other two dudes,” DJ Akademiks began. “We’re not gay. I’m not gay. Like, it actually bothers me. These are the things that bother me the most. The way to get under Ak’s skin is mention some gay s**t and put it on his name. Or get a gay n***a to go at Ak! We done seen the Saucy s**t.

DJ Akademiks Responds To 6ix9ine Rumors: Watch

“Listen, I gave y’all the chance to come tell me why,” DJ Akademiks continued. “Whatever y’all got going on, y’all should leave Big Ak out of it. The n***a moved on and left your a** in the dust! You was a hired prost*tute, you was an escort, okay? Don’t think too much about it. The bag’s getting low now, don’t be mad at me! This is what all y’all girls do. Y’all girls is really like an Airbnb, that’s what y’all p***y is. You get a rich n***a and hopefully he can just move in and just permanently f**k you all day long and give you gifts. Obviously, I’m telling you, this is fake. This is a woman who clearly must either be trying to do one of two things.

“She’s been recently accused after Cardi B viciously beat her a** and beat her sister’s a** in the club and they got banned from all New York clubs,” he concluded. “That’s a fact. Cardi B got sued, that’s a fact. Did she say this to spite me because I mentioned that? Now, with all of that being said, you was my man’s girl, so I let it fly! I don’t care! All these b***hes in the game right here, they’re prost*tutes. All of them, okay? Now, most of them– actually, all of them pretty much just high-class escorts. They all got a price. I know 6ix9ine gotta feel stup*d. She was a perennial side chick! Offset had her, A Boogie was f***ing her. Every n***a done piped the shawty out! I’m glad we talking, ’cause I love to talk.” For more on DJ Akademiks and 6ix9ine, come back to HNHH.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Former Bodyguard Shares Tory Lanez Song On Instagram Story

Even though the Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez shooing case was resolved earlier this year in court, it’s still a matter of public fascination. Megan has recently returned to music with a new single and some big soundtrack cuts. But that has also caused fans to take a renewed interest in the case. Despite all of the evidence proving Tory guilty in court and leading him to be convicted to 10 years in prison, there are many online with their own conspiracy theories about the trial.

Those particular fans got some drama to feast on over the weekend. That came when one of Megan Thee Stallion’s former bodyguards made a seemingly innocuous post on Instagram that went viral. The post caught on because the Tory Lanez and DaBaby song “SKAT” was shared alongside it. That was more than enough to get fans once again cooking up stories about how they think Megan somehow orchestrated the whole thing. Adding fuel to their fire is the fact that the bodyguard who shared it is the same one that failed to appear as a witness during Tory’s trial. Check out the post that sparked new debate over the trial below.

In the comments of a post recapping the events, fans try to share their narratives about Megan. “Please notice all her close friends stopped messing wit her theres one issue … her and yall refuse to see the issue,” one of the top comments reads. “This proves to me they really paid ppl off what would Meg gain lying about who shot her ? Her and Kelsey ain’t ride off into the sunset together I don’t get yall point,” another suggests.

Last month, Megan Thee Stallion returned with her new single “Cobra.” The song saw her leaning into some of her most personal feelings. Despite the intimate nature of the song it still featured her characteristic hard-hitting delivery. Over the weekend she teamed up with breakout singer Renee Rapp for a new soundtrack cut. The song is due to land on the soundtrack for the upcoming Mean Girls musical early next year. George Santos Knows More About Nicki Minaj Than He Does Key Civil Rights Leaders, As He Showed In A Ruthless Ziwe Interview

Disgraced former United States Representative George Santos may (or may not) be a lot of things. But one thing we can be sure of is the fact that he’s a Barb. During a sitdown interview with Ziwe, which was published to YouTube today (December 18), Santos spit some bars from one of Nicki Minaj‘s earlier verses.

In a portion of the interview, Ziwe went through a list of civil rights icons, and prompted Santos to tell her what they each mean to her.

When asked about Marsha P. Johnson, Santos deemed the LGBTQ+ rights trailblazer a “very respectful, honorable person,” though he wasn’t quite clear on why he admired her.

Santos also made it quite evident that he didn’t know who James Baldwin or Harvey Milk were. He did, however, say that Saturday Night Live actor Bowen Yang deserves an EGOT for his impression of him.

Ziwe then asked about Nicki Minaj, whom Santos called a “queen.” She proceed to rap a portion of Minaj’s verse on Kanye West’s 2010 hit, “Monster.”

“Pull up in the monster, automobile,” rapped Ziwe. Santos popped in, rapping “Gangsta, with a bad b*tch that came from Sri Lanka.” He then let out a big laugh, and Ziwe’s reaction said everything you need to know about her thoughts on the situation.

You can watch the full interview above (if you must).
