We are a just about a month out from Offset’s second solo album, Set It Off. Ahead of the album, Offset has shared a new single, “FAN.”
On “FAN,” Offset has come to terms with his circle growing smaller, and keeping around a select few who have demonstrated loyalty to him.
“Now I’m over it, thank God I’m over it / Tired of stressin’ about what I can’t control / I think I’m better on my own,” he sings on the song’s opening verse.
As the song details the beginning of a new chapter in Offset’s life, the video symbolizes a rebirth for the former Migo.
In the video, the city is in a state of disaster, as riots break out. Still, Offset remains confident in himself, as he channels one of his idols, Michael Jackson. Offset recreates several moments of Jackson’s career, including reenacting the movie theater scene from the “Thriller” video and posing for his own versions of Jackson’s album covers.
Elsewhere in the video, he is seen dancing in the street, wearing a suit and white gloves, similar to those of Jackson’s wardrobe.
You can see the video for “FAN” above.
Set If Off is out 10/15 via Quality Control and Motown. Find more information here.
Back in July, Offset dropped his new single “JEALOUSY.“ The track saw him teaming up with his wife, Cardi B, for a funny and hard-hitting collaboration playing on some of the public perceptions of their relationship. He said in a later interview that the song would serve as the lead single for an upcoming album he has planned for later this year. Now, he seems to be taking another step toward that project.
In a short Instagram clip posted today, the former Migos rapper teases the release of his next song and video. “FAN!!!! 9/15” the caption reads, confirming that the new track will be dropping later this week. In the short video, he also plays a brief clip of the song. With lyrics like “Tired of stressing bout what I can’t control,” and a more somber instrumental it seems like Offset will be getting heartfelt and reflective on this one. Check out the full tease below.
Recently, Offset has found a surprising ally in streamer Kai Cenat. When Kai was arrested for inciting a riot in New York over an ill-planned giveaway he held, the rapper came to his defense. Later the pair got on a stream together where Kai asked for some help to shoot his shot with SZA. Even though they both liked the approach they came up with, ultimately it didn’t work and he ended up getting blocked by the R&B darling.
One thing that has pervaded much of Offset’s recent promotional material is references to Michael Jackson. That has come in a few different ways, starting with his fashion. Since at least Paris Fashion Week earlier this year he’s popped up numerous times in fits that feel analogous to the King Of Pop. Even in the new song teaser a vinyl copy of the singer’s famous Off The Wall album can be seen. What do you think of the short tease Offset shared of his new single? The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.
I guess this is the new normal. Migos, as a group, is definitely gone. The trio’s surviving members, Quavo and Offset, may have resolved whatever bad blood caused the split in the first place (or at least resolved to move forward in the wake of tragedy), but with Takeoff no longer available to offer the third dimension to their music, even a reunion between them just wouldn’t be the same. A few years ago, this might have spelled disaster for both Quavo and Offset as solo artists. This may be harsh, but Quavo’s 2018 solo debut Quavo Huncho just didn’t display the sort of depth to suggest that his artistic output would continue to match his personal charisma for very long.
But Quavo’s latest solo project, Rocket Power, showcases a tremendous amount of growth. Here, he sounds hungry and engaged again, and he has just enough to talk about outside his typical range of wealth and gang talk to carry the majority of the album’s 17 songs. Unfortunately, that “just enough” includes the recent violent death of his close friend, nephew, and bandmate, Takeoff. It feels vaguely icky to attribute his artistic evolution to personal trauma — something the journalism industry does way too much of to begin with, if you ask me — and yet, there are now undeniably added facets and shades to Quavo’s music that weren’t there before.
Of course, in the five years since Huncho, Quavo, like all of us, had a lot of time to sit around, and it could be that he just spent that time sharpening his craft. He also got into a high-profile relationship with a fellow rapper, Saweetie, as well as an equally public breakup. He has, in short, lived a bit, and I think that has always been the primary component of constructing a long-lasting and compelling catalog of albums. The other half of that is, of course, technique. Quavo always came in third among the Migos’ brotherhood in that respect, with Takeoff coming off more practiced, and Offset sounding more wise. The songs on Quavo’s debut just wound up sounding hollow by comparison, and it didn’t help that the album was weighed down by so many guest stars.
On Rocket Power, Quavo pares back the call list, restricting the invites to Atlanta natives. Future makes two appearances, as does the late Takeoff (on one song, together), while the incarcerated Young Thug reminds us why he has such a passionate following on “Focused.” Two younger artists, BabyDrill and the fortuitously named Hunxho, show up on “Stain,” reflecting Quavo’s willingness to pick up the torch once passed to him by Gucci Mane and mentor the next generation of his hometown’s rap talent. Otherwise, Quavo is the sole voice on Rocket Power, which puts greater pressure on him to actually hold the listener’s attention for almost the full 50 minutes. Miraculously, that’s what he does for much of the runtime, although the album is still somehow a hair too long, even clocking in at under an hour.
Quavo manages this feat by employing a new tool in his increasingly diverse kit: vulnerability. He’s always been a bit vague as a storyteller, more prone to setting up pristine tableaus from a rags-to-riches story, but on songs like “Mama Told Me,” he finally provides the connective tissue to fill in the blanks. On “Greatness,” he directly addresses the fate of his band and admits “I don’t got all the answers.” “Hold Me,” while unfolding an otherwise rote “gangsta’s pain” style meditation, lines like “lost my nephew to gunplay and smoke sh*t” lend the song an air of authenticity. It sucks that we can’t necessarily buy such expressions without seeing the physical and psychic damage for ourselves, but that’s what happens when they usually only warrant one or two songs and a couple of throwaway lines amid a non-stop ball-off.
The celebration songs, like “Turn Yo Clic Up” with Future and “Who Wit Me,” have the benefit of Quavo’s gift for writing quirky, inescapable hooks, but the songs worth returning to are the more reflective ones like “Rocket Power.” That certainly says something about when Quavo — or really, any rapper — is at his best. Flexing is fine, but the element that makes us fall in love with these artists, that makes them so intrinsic to the fabric of our everyday lives despite the differences in circumstances with the artists themselves, is their ability to tell us who they are. With Rocket Power, Quavo finally offers a glimpse of the man behind the ad-libs, and gives us more reason to follow along as he keeps Takeoff’s memory alive.
Rocket Power is out now via Quality Control Music / Motown Records.
Quavo celebrated his late nephew, Takeoff, and the release of his album, Rocket Power, in spectacular style on August 17, in New York City. The event took place at The Hayden Planetarium and featured a mesmerizing intergalactic-themed laser light show, a fitting tribute to his nephew, Takeoff aka “The Rocket.” Despite his recent loss, the […]
Quavo is in full-on album mode. The former Migos rapper is gearing up to release his first new solo album in 5 years this week. He’s been teasing the project on Instagram for weeks since it was delayed from its original release date in early March. That included a number of promotional images, a confirmed album cover, and just this morning a brand new snippet of one of the album’s songs. But even while he’s in the process of promoting a new album, he couldn’t resist stopping by for a Beyonce show.
Celebrities have piled up at various stops on the Renaissance tour all summer. It’s no surprise that during a recent show in Atlanta, some hip-hop royalty was in attendance. A video made the rounds last night of Quavo at the show but he was doing something unexpected. The clip shows the rapper bartending, or rather, making a drink for himself to his own specifications. Onlookers were exceedingly amused by his display at the show. The clip comes just a few days after 21 Savage, who is on a pretty substantial tour of his own right now, stopped by a Renaissance stop and seemed to have a great time.
Recently, Quavo celebrated a meaningful musical milestone. His collaborative album with TakeoffOnly Built For Infinity Links was certified gold less than a year after its release. The album featured the hit song “HOTEL LOBBY” and a number of features from the likes of Young Thug, NBA Youngboy, Gunna, and more.
The project was released less than a month before the tragic death of Takeoff at a Houston nightclub. Since then artists from across the spectrum of hip-hop have poured out praise for Take. That included a viral moment at the BET Awards when Quavo and Offset had a surprise reunion show to honor their former Migos collaborator. What do you think of Quavo putting his bartending skills on display at a Beyonce concert? Let us know in the comment section below.
After it was originally scheduled to release earlier this month, Quavo’s Rocket Power is scheduled to drop this week. After posting some album covers and promotional material for the project over the past few weeks, he’s continuing to tease the forthcoming release. Earlier today that former-Migos rapper shared a snippet to Instagram giving fans a tease of what’s to come. “Rocket Power Friday Who Wit Me???” the caption of the post reads. Fans and fellow artists flooded the comments to express their own excitement for the project.
Quavo has spent a lot of time recently paying tribute to his fellow former-Migos member Takeoff. Take was tragically murdered in November of 2022 at a nightclub in Houston. Last week Q celebrated the pairs collaborative album Only Built For Infinity Links being certified gold. The stacked tracklist featured collaborations with Mustard, NBA Youngboy, Gunna, Young Thug, Summer Walker, Birdman, and Gucci Mane. It’s lead single “Hotel Lobby” has racked up over 260k streams and stuck in the Hot 100 for multiple weeks.
Quavo tributed Takeoff in a different way a few weeks ago. He hosted a massive giveaway of school supplies in his local Atlanta. Fellow Atl native 6LACK was in attendance as they gave out tons of school supplies to families in need. Those working the event wore black and white jerseys which paid tribute to Takeoff.
The most public tribute made in honor of the late rapper came during the BET Awards earlier this year. Quavo and fellow former Migos member Offset surprised fans by reuniting on stage. The pair gave a performance that honored the memory and legacy of Takeoff which immediately made a viral smash. It was recently confirmed that some of the material Takeoff recorded during his life is being assembled into a posthumous album which is could be released later this year. What do you think of the new snippet from Quavo? Let us know in the comment section below.
It’s been a pretty busy year Quavo outside of music and it’s about to get even busier with the release of a new album. Quavo has been teasing the release of his new album “Rocket Power” for a while now but it’s finally right around the corner. The album is slated to drop next week on the 18th and the former Migos rapper may have just shown fans the album cover. He posted four new pictures to Instagram two of which feature pictures of a young child dressed up as an astronaut with the other two being childish illustrations of space. While he didn’t confirm if they’ve album covers or which one specifically will serve as the project’s primary cover, the implication is clear.
In the caption, Quavo continues to tease the project. “The Power Is In You Don’t Stop Dreaming #RocketPower 8.18 ” the text attached to the post reads. In the comments, fans began to express their hopes for the project. “manifesting offset on the album,” one of the top comments reads. The possibility seems a lot more likely following the pair teaming up at the BET Awards for a performance paying tribute to Takeoff, who was tragically killed last year. Elsewhere in the comments, there were more tributes to the late rapper. “What Huncho is doing right now is incredible. LL TAKE,” reads one.
Last week Quavo was forced to push back the release of “Rocket Power.“ It was originally supposed to release on August 4th but for unspecified reasons was pushed back 2 weeks. “We gotta run some more tests before the rocket is ready to launch,” he said in a Tweet.
Both Quavo and Trippie Redd ended up delaying projects slated to release on August 4th. Subsequently that caused some fans to speculate that Drake could be dropping his new album. The rapper has been teasing a new album called For All The Dogs all summer. Ultimately that wasn’t the case and the delays seem unrelated. What do you think of the potential album covers for “Rocket Power”? Let us know in the comment section below.
It looks like we’re going to have to wait a little bit longer for Quavo‘s second solo album, Rocket Power. Yesterday, the Migos rapper took to Instagram to share that Rocket Power has been pushed back.
In a video on Quavo’s account, the Atlanta rapper is seen listening to mixes of the new album. “We gotta run some more tests before the rocket is ready to launch,” the post’s caption reads.
The album was originally set to drop this Friday, but has now been pushed back two weeks. The album is largely inspired by his Migos bandmate Takeoff, who was killed last November following an altercation in Houston.
In a recent interview with Jamie Crawford-Walker, Quavo shared that he has felt Takeoff’s presence everywhere as he’s been working on the project.
“I miss him a lot and I love him,” Quavo said. “He know I love him. That’s what we always know. So when you see me and you see me smiling or something like that, you don’t gotta never think I forgot about him or I’ll forget about him. I think about him all the time. Sometimes I cry myself to sleep. And that’s it. I just know he’s here. If I can’t feel him, I just know he’s around.”
Rocket Power is out 8/18 via Quality Control/Capitol.
There likely won’t be any new Migos music in the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean you won’t hear from the two remaining members, Quavo and Offset. Both rappers have been working on their respective solo albums for a bit, and now, it looks like Quavo’s, Rocket Power is soon to be released.
After releasing the single “Turn Yo Clic Up” with Future last week, today, Quavo shared an album trailer on his Instagram. Fittingly, it features Quavo facing off with a rocket shuttle in the desert, gripping Takeoff’s Migos chain (the album’s title is an homage to Takeoff, whose own solo debut was called The Last Rocket).
In the song playing over the scene, Quavo mentions Offset’s departure from the group (“my cousin jumped out the car, I had to keep goin’”) and recent comments about their familial relationship (“now he tellin’ the whole world that we ain’t blood”), which was foundational to the group’s mythology. However, he measures the lyrics by remembering that “it’s all love.” The trailer ends with the title displayed on screen, along with the imminent release date: August 4, 2023. You can check out the trailer below.
