YTB Fatt Shows That He Has An Ear For Great Beats On “Brazi Blue Cheese”

YTB Fatt has been on the rise over the last several months. That is because he got started almost a year go today! Yes, in just this short amount of time, he is becoming one of the names you have to know from the Memphis area. Today, we are back to cover YTB Fatt’s latest single “Brazi Blue Cheese.”

Listening to his music, you are going to hear the clear influence of the city envelop his style. The deep and intimidating cadence is there, similar to artists like Key Glock, Yo Gotti, and Young Dolph. Production wise he likes to choose beats with the heavy piano keys atop rumbling bass and quick hi-hats. YTB is still discerning himself from the rest of stars down South, but he is well on his way.

“Brazi Blue Cheese” standout feature is the instrumental from klutchfrenchie and Coldblime. It is one the most fierce sounding beats we have heard all year so far. There is also a fun Super Mario Bros. coin collecting sound thrown in for some extra character. YTB does hold up his end of things though too with a catchy flow and some solid bars.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “Brazi Blue Cheese,” by YTB Fatt? Is this one of his strongest tracks of his career, why or why not? What is your favorite element of the song and why? Do you need a new album from him at some point this year? GloRilla Is Unstoppable On “Yeah Glo!”

GloRilla’s stock is not that high for a good amount of hip-hop listeners out there right now. Unfortunately, music fans will kill an artist for dropping one or two lackluster songs. On top of that, her comments on Twitter (X) about her promiscuity and celibacy goals have turned even more people away. It is unfortunate because Glo got off to a blistering start.

“F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” and “Tomorrow 2” with Cardi B really got her career moving. So much so, that she would nab a short but memorable performance on Don Toliver’s “Leave the Club” from Love Sick. After some awkward tracks off the CMG label’s tape Gangsta Art 2, Glo might be rounding back into form with this newest single. “Yeah Glo!” is a fantastic time.

Listen To “Yeah Glo!” By GloRilla

The beat is all Memphis with earth-shattering bass, hard-hitting kick drums, and addicting cowbells. Glo’s verses are braggadocious as ever, with the hook being one of her most memorable. She is essentially hyping herself up throughout the track, and we are here for it. “Get ’em Glo! Stop overthinkin’, these h**s can’t f*** with you (Period) Get ’em Glo! Standin’ on business in these Chanel shoes.”

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “Yeah Glo!,” by GloRilla? Is this her strongest single ever, why or why not? Is she the best Memphis female rapper, why or why not? Do you think this is the start of a debut album rollout? Does she get too much hate? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. How Three 6 Mafia & Memphis Embraced Horror Movies

Memphis is not just known as the birthplace of rock n’ roll. Over the decades, the Memphis rap scene has become a giant in the industry and one of the most influential hubs in hip-hop. Moreover, the city has gained prominence for its horrorcore through its long-standing relationship with the horror genre. It dates back to the mid-late 1980s when horrorcore first emerged as a recognized subgenre. The genesis and development of the subgenre can also be credited to a handful of pioneering rappers in the scene at that time. One of the most prominent pioneers is the Hip Hop group, Three 6 Mafia.

By all accounts, Three 6 Mafia is an iconic Hip Hop act. Their influence continues to be heard today. However, their penchant for spooky films helped carve out their sound and legacy. Drawing inspiration from horror movies and scores, Three 6 Mafia and the Memphis rap scene provided a blueprint for horrorcore rap.

Memphis Rap & Horror

Horrorcore would not be the same without the cinematic experiences that inspired pioneer artists and producers. The film genre inspired Memphis rap artists and producers to draw hyperbolic parallels between their realities and the gruesome and macabre themes found in horror. References to violence, occult murder, supernatural elements, and movie characters are ubiquitous in Memphis rap songs. More importantly, these aspects help create the vivid and chilling narrative style found in plenty of Memphis records. Iconic films like The Return Of The Living Dead (1985), Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer (1986), and A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) helped fuel the minds of these creatives. DJ Paul particularly cited Henry and Friday the 13th as two of his earliest influences while he chatted with Passion of the Weiss.

Additionally, producers frequently sampled dialogue and soundtracks from popular movies to set the tone for the eerie themes. Soundbites were used for interludes and intros. These inclusions infused songs with a haunting atmosphere and created a palpable sense of tension and unease. Artists like Tommy Wright III, DJ Paul, and Juicy J typically employed these elements in their production.

However, the aesthetics often associated with Memphis’ early hip-hop scene further emphasized the horror genre’s influence. Horror-inspired imagery found in album art and music videos was reminiscent of classic movie posters and further carved out the overall creative direction. Projects from Gangsta Pat, Tommy Wright III, and Three 6 Mafia were heavily influenced by 80s and 90s horror movies.

Three 6 Mafia & Horror

Three 6 Mafia famously excelled at incorporating horror elements into their music. The group is known for their dark, aggressive sound and explicit lyrics. In a conversation with Passion of the Weiss, founding member DJ Paul shared that, while they had garnered a reputation for dark lyricism, it was all just a show. “It was nothing rebellious,” he said. “I just liked horror movies and horror music.”

Three 6 Mafia has since inspired a generation of musicians to continue to explore horror themes in their music. Rappers like Scan Man, Denzel Curry, and SpaceGhostPurrp have cited them as influences. Furthermore, even producers like Drumma Boy have been directly influenced by Three 6 Mafia and the Memphis horrorcore sound.

The group has played a significant role in the evolution of Southern Hip Hop. Three 6 Mafia gained national recognition with their iconic 1995 debut album, Mystic Stylez, which is widely considered a seminal album in horrorcore. The project excellently demonstrated how Memphis’ rap scene is unlike any other city in America. Mystic Stylez also delved into supernatural and occult themes, drawing inspiration from horror movies. Three 6 Mafia, with their horror-infused lyrics and production style, has inspired a generation of musicians to continue to explore horror themes in their music. Horror movies have not gone out of style, either. Consequently, horrorcore artists are still being inspired to create more interesting projects.

Hitkidd Drops Female Rap Posse Cut Single, “You The Type”

“F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” producer Hitkidd just released “You the Type” with Aleza, K Carbon, Slimeroni, and Gloss Up. Overall, it’s a fiery and hard-hitting trap cut with great energy from every single female MC. In fact, they’re all from GloRilla’s clique, with whom the producer made their breakout track last year. Furthermore, each rapper gets a moment of shine via short and sweet verses that don’t let the energy up. As far as the instrumental, it’s just as murderous and bass-heavy as you’d expect from a Memphis production. However, it feels particularly dramatic or menacing thanks to low piano chords and regal melodies.

Unfortunately, the “F.N.F.” collaborators had a small falling out a couple of months ago as GloRilla and Hitkidd discussed contract issues. However, the producer’s longtime business partner Kadeem Phillips provided a third perspective, albeit from Hitkidd’s camp. “Glo independently collects money for FNF its all hers she just doesnt own the song and never will,” he wrote. “We actually saved her from losing millions and Glo was able to get a deal without having to sell her independent record. FNF was created to help all the girls not for CMG.”

Still what did you think of this latest Memphis posse cut, “You the Type” with Hitkidd, Aleza, K Carbon, Slimeroni, and Gloss Up? However you feel, let us know in the comments and check out standout bars and the music video down below. Also, if you haven’t heard the track yet, you can find the loaded new song on your preferred streaming service. As always, come back to HNHH every week for the best new music releases.

GloRilla Attends Gangsta Boo’s Funeral, Wants To “Keep Representing” Her

When news broke of Memphis legend Gangsta Boo’s passing, sympathizers and artists like GloRilla attended her funeral with heavy hearts. As the hip-hop world and beyond mourns her loss, the next generation is recognizing the importance of legacy. Furthermore, GloRilla spoke at the proceedings about her commitment to keeping the Three 6 Mafia queen’s spirit alive.

“She’s still alive. You know what I’m saying?” she said at the funeral. Also, she reposted clips of talking to reporters on her Instagram story. “Big Memphis. We gonna keep representing her.” In another snippet, the 23-year-old added “Long live Lola. Big Memphis. Let’s go!”

Moreover, the two Memphis MCs collaborated with Latto on their song “FTCU.” After Boo was found dead in her native city on New Year’s Day at the age of 43, an official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Given the shocking news, many wanted and still want to pay their respects. After her passing was shared with the world, she was laid to rest on Saturday, January 14th. Furthermore, family and friends held the funeral at Brown Missionary Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi. According to The Commercial Appeal and Action News 5, she rests about 15 minutes south of her hometown.

Meanwhile, Boo’s other “FTCU” collaborator Latto shared her grief over the rapper’s loss. “The one hit different,” the “Big Energy” rapper wrote. “I’m just glad I got to feel your embrace & give u ur flowers before u left us. BIG BOO 4L.”

While the city of Memphis is hurting right now, the success of artists like GloRilla is forever indebted to the ground Gangsta Boo paved. Moreover, fellow Memphis star Moneybagg Yo just dropped “On Wat U On” featuring Glo. As two of the hottest rappers of the moment, they haven’t lost sight of the city that birthed them. That being said, we will see how Boo’s passing impacts the art the city creates in the future.

What do you think of GloRilla’s words at Gangsta Boo’s funeral? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments down below. Also, as always, check back in with HNHH to continue celebrating Gangsta Boo’s life and impact.

Clay “Krucial” Perry III Delivers “Switches” With NLE Choppa

Clay “Krucial” Perry III just tapped NLE Choppa for “Switches,” a woozy and relatively low-key cut from two Memphis MCs. While Krucial is still forging his way in the rap game, the support from a Memphis star is surely useful. Moreover, last we heard of Krucial on HNHH was his project If We Must Die, which featured the likes of Trippie Redd and Blocboy JB.

ATLANTA, GA – OCTOBER 6: Rapper NLE Choppa attends a Celebration of Black Culture at Republic Lounge on October 6, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Prince Williams/Wireimage)

Even though it’s been a while since that tape, Krucial put in some work last year. Furthermore, along with a few singles, he delivered his Clay EP. Also, this newest single came with the announcement of his upcoming mixtape, Wake Me Up When It’s Over. His team announced its February 2nd release and said it would be on Tay Keith’s Drumatize (DOA) label. Given the features, it seems like a Memphis round-up, as the names included Choppa, Blocboy, Lil Migo, Kevo Muney, and Lil Beezy.

On this newest track, Krucial and Choppa’s talent solidified excitement for this new album. Moreover, their flows are fast and emphatic, the autotune doesn’t overwhelm the verses, and their writing seems sharp and measured. Moreover, there are some very dramatic vocal samples used that give the track a slightly epic feel. Even if it doesn’t reinvent the Memphis wheel, it certainly is another example of the region’s overwhelming talent and chemistry between its artists.

Still, what did you think of Krucial’s latest track, “Switches” featuring NLE Choppa? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments and check out some notable lyrics and the song’s music video down below. Also, if you haven’t heard “Switches” yet, you can find the new single on your preferred streaming service. As always, stay tuned to HNHH for the best new hip-hop each week from Memphis and beyond.

Gloss Up Details The Female Rap Scene In Memphis & “Don’t Play With Me” For “On The Come Up”

Over the last several years, Memphis has become the only true rival to Atlanta as the new Hip-Hop capital. Now, the female rappers there have started to really gain steam, so Memphis may actually have an edge over the A. Following the release of GloRilla’s sensational breakout hit “F.N.F.,” the Hip-Hop community fell in love with the CMG signee. In addition to Glo, the Hip-Hop community also fell in love with her “ratchet ass friends.” Surprisingly, many of them were also rising Memphis femcees.

One of those talented rappers that made an appearance in the “F.N.F.” video was Gloss Up. However, the mother of two is much more than a video extra. After getting her feet wet with freestyles over popular Drake, Plies, and Nicki Minaj instrumentals, Gloss started releasing original music. Her first official project, Different Shades of Gloss, arrived in the summer of 2019.

In the years following that project, Gloss Up continued to work on her craft. In 2021, her team-up with HitKidd and his curated selection of Memphis female rappers — including GloRilla, K Carbon, Slimeroni, and Aleza — proved to be one of the most pivotal decisions of her career. That summer, the massive female ensemble released their first song together, titled “Set The Tone.” Needless to say, it lived up to its namesake, as it showcased how intriguing Memphis’ female rap scene was.

Following the momentum of “Set The Tone” and “Set The Tone 2,” “F.N.F.” just tipped the scales even further. This year, that song launched GloRilla, Gloss Up, and the rest of their frequent collaborators into the mainstream eye. As 2022 progressed, Gloss Up, a self-proclaimed underdog, ended up signing a record deal with Quality Control Music. Now, she’s here to introduce herself as one of the featured artists for HNHH’s On The Come Up.

On The Come Up: Gloss Up

Gloss Up on HotNewHipHop’s “On The Come Up.” (Cam Kirk, Collective Gallery)

HNHH: Gloss, how’d you get into music?

I would just write poems when I was little. My mom used to think they was poems, but they was raps. So yeah.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Megan [Thee Stallion], my best friend GloRilla, I like Lizzo, and as far as the dudes, I like Dolph.

What was the turning point that helped you realize that you were on your way to becoming successful? What was that moment of like “Damn, I’m doing something right.”

I went on tour, on my own little tour around different cities. I had went to 14 cities, and that’s when I really realized this is what I wanted to do.

If a music fan, brand new, were to discover you today for the first time, what song would you tell them to listen to?

“Don’t Play With Me.” Or my song “Sunshine.” My song “Sunshine” — I had wrote it for my kids. Well, I had one child at the time. Cause it’s like different. It’s versatile. It’s not bad. I really didn’t say no curse words in it.

Where can I find it?

On YouTube, my YouTube channel, Glitter Girl Gloss.

Tell me about a valuable lesson you’ve learned during your come-up.

Slow down on posting stuff. Don’t post too much. Don’t give em too much, and don’t be popping out for free.

Summarize your debut single, mixtape, whichever of the two you wanna touch on, and what inspired you to make that.

Well, right now the song I’m pushing is called “Don’t Play With Me”. I’m really pushing that song cause I’ve been pregnant for two years, I really haven’t just put no song out by myself. I’ve just been working with the other girls. Right now, I’m building a catalog, so I’m not sure when I’m gonna do my mixtape or my albums just yet. I’m just working

What inspired you to make that song?

People that play with you. It’s just one of them songs, you just be like, “Don’t play with me.”

Sometimes people get you fucked up…

Yup, they got you fucked up. So you be like — and it’s catchy — like, “Go play with your dick baby, don’t play with me.” You know. You know how that be.

Tell me about your hometown, tell me a little bit more about Memphis and how it influences your music.

Now it’s influenced me a lot, like, they giving me a lot of faith to keep going.  Cause it’s like, we the first girls that’s out of Memphis that’s actually doing something. For a long time, it’s been the dudes getting it on, so now it’s like, the girls getting recognition. It’s cool cause everybody supporting us right now, and I like it.

Speak on that. Like how does it feel being one of the first women from Memphis to really make it rapping? Getting signed and doing it with your friends. How does that feel?

You know, we got a little change and stuff, but like, at our age it feel real good. And like, we’ve been talking about this stuff so long. Like, too fucking long. And it’s crazy that it actually happened. I don’t know, it’s cool.

Making it to the cover, you good.

[Laughs]

Where do you hope your music career takes you?

I wanna be big, I wanna do different stuff, like, different kinds of songs– be very versatile, different genres. I wanna be on the biggest stage, one day. Yeah.

If you could create your dream song, unlimited budget, P says “you know what? Whatever you need, let’s make it happen.” What would it sound like and who would you feature on the song? Past artist or present.

I wanna do a song for the girls, like the regular girls. The girls, the mommas, you know. Giving people confidence to feeling confident in your body. Like, you don’t gotta be like everybody else. Be yourself. When I do make that kinda song I’m gonna put Lizzo on it. Lizzo, yep.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring musician on the come-up, what would you tell them?

Keep going, stay in your lane. Create your own lane if you don’t have it. Just keep going.

New Pop-Up Museum Set To Honor Young Dolph

It’s been just over a year since Memphis rapper Young Dolph’s tragic murder in his hometown.

Although the hip-hop community is continuing to mourn the loss of one of Southern rap’s most prolific stars, there’s some good news for Dolph fans.

The late rapper is set to be honored in the form of a museum called the “Dolphland Pop-up Museum Tour.” The announcement was made by his estate, his record label (Paper Route Empire) and the Trap Music Museum on Wednesday (December 21).

The exhibition will reportedly include both personal items from the Memphis native, as well as curated art. Furthermore, the focus is to reflect Dolph’s “unforgettable lyricism, personality, entrepreneurial spirit, philanthropy and historic moments from his legendary career.”

“The goal of the pop-up museum is to showcase the character of a leader and businessman, and to highlight the journey of someone whose early beginnings may mirror that of many young kids and entrepreneurs starting, so that they may draw inspiration to keep pushing on their own endeavors,” says Paper Route Empire CEO, Daddy-O in a statement.

The exhibit will be coming to several U.S. cities. The first of which will be New York City from January 13-15. Other stops it will make include touching down in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas.

The “100 Shots” rapper’s first posthumous album, Paper Route Frank, just arrived earlier this month. The 13-track project boasts features from the likes of Key Glock, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz and more.

Finally, make sure to stream the posthumous release, as well as the rest of Dolph’s music on your preferred streaming platform. He owns all of his masters, meaning that his family will see the profit from these streams.

If the pop-up museum comes to your nearest city, will you be checking it out? Comment down below and stay tuned to HNHH for the latest industry updates.
