Freddie Gibbs Says He’s Now Working On Not One, Not Two But Four Albums At Once

Uproxx cover star Freddie Gibbs has been more prolific than ever in recent years, releasing no fewer than five projects over the past five years. Beginning with Freddie in June 2018, he’s released at least an album a year since (if you count October 2018’s Fetti with Curren$y as his 2019 project). That number is about to rise drastically according to a new interview with XXL in which he boasts he’s now working on not just one but four joint projects with different producers, including ones with past collaborators Madlib and The Alchemist and his long-awaited R&B album.

“I’ma hit y’all with some sh*t that y’all thought y’all was ready for, but you really ain’t ready for,” he promises in the interview. Alchemist and Madlib ain’t going nowhere, so keep that in mind. And me and Boi-1da in the studio now real, real, real heavy. I’m making the best music of my life, so it’s no reason to stop. And I’m the king of R&B, so I gotta do that album as well.”

Gibbs first teased an R&B album in 2021, telling Revolt that Soul Sold Separately, his Warner Records major label debut from last year, “might be” one of his final rap albums. “I ain’t gotta rap no more, man,” he said. “After SSS, I’ma show y’all … I’m ’bout to bust out with an R&B album. R&B is what I started out doing before all the rap sh*t. Now, all you n****s just wanna make me rap all day, and I don’t wanna rap.” Given Fred’s sense of humor, he could well have just been joking, but considering he’s earnestly moving into movies and television and proving equally adept at acting, I wouldn’t put it past him to follow through and become just as accomplished while singing instead.

Freddie Gibbs Has Four Albums In The Works

Freddie Gibbs is proving to have an overwhelmingly successful career in the rap game. As he ventures off into other creative endeavors such as acting, music has always been his main focus.

He’s apparently working on four different projects right now. The Indiana native made the announcement in a recent lengthy interview with XXL.

“Alchemist & Madlib ain’t goin’ nowhere, keep that in mind. Me and Boi-1da in the studio now, real heavy. I’m making the best music of my life, so it’s no reason to stop. And I’m the king of R&B, so I gotta do that [too],” he says in a part of the interview.

Of course, the “Crime Pays” rapper has full-length collaborations with both The Alchemist and Madlib in his discography. In 2014, he linked up with the Madvillain producer for Piñata. Five years later, the duo blessed fans with its follow-up, the 15-track Bandana.

In 2018, The Alchemist and Freddie linked up with Curren$y for a short, collaborative album, Fetti. The Indiana native and the decorated producer re-united in 2020 for a full-length release between just the two of them, Alfredo. They saw a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2021 Grammy awards for their effort. However, Nas and Hit-Boy took the award home for the first album of their collaborative trilogy, King’s Disease.

Furthermore, the 40-year-old is still fresh off the release of his latest album, $oul $old $eperately. Serving as his fifth solo studio album, the project finds Gibbs making music with both his past and more recent sounds in one place.

Although he’s yet to make a full-length project with Boi-1da, the pair have collaborated in the past. Most recently, the Canadian producer has a production credit on “Space Rabbit”, off of $$$.

After implying that his 2022 album would be his final one, it’s certainly surprising to hear this news. “As of right now, I feel like I gave the world what it needed with $$$. I just wanna sit down and live life with my people…” he said during an AMA session on Twitter in October.

Madlib And Mark Ronson’s New Collaboration Is In The Can And Made From Recycling Plant Sounds

From conscious hip-hop to environmental consciousness, Madlib has dropped a new album featuring samples of sounds from the Coca-Cola recycling plant. Having teamed up with Mark Ronson, the two superproducers introduced Recycled Records in a new video narrated by rap veteran MC Lyte.

“It sounds very crazy and overstated to say it, but anything can become a sample, right? Ronson said in the video. “Like any sound, you can somehow manipulate in to a drum. The sounds and the rhythms and the pulses of sounds from everyday life can also be incredibly inspiring.”

In the video, we see both Madlib and Ronson in their studios, mixing, looping, and distorting sounds from the recycling plant — like the sound of crushing trash, and warping and reshaping bottles — into hip-hop-influenced instrumentals.

“It’s not everyday you get the opportunity to create music using objects found in everyday life to emulate new forms of sound,” Madlib said in a statement on the Coca-Cola website. “Recycled Records is an EP of original tracks made from the sounds of the closed loop recycling process.”

The album consists of seven unnamed tracks, five of which are Madlib beats, and the other two, Mark Ronson beats.

Maxo And Pink Siifu Try To Have Hope In The Sobering ’48’ Video

It is tough enough navigating one’s own personal journey, but looking at the way the world has been spinning on its axis for the last two years, it is very understandable why it may be hard for anyone to have hope. What is the right way to battle both internal strife and external pressure? Which should be defeated first? It seems Maxo and Pink Siifu are looking to lead that fight by example in the video for “48.”

The Madlib-produced track isn’t too instrumentally layered, allowing Maxo and Siifu an open canvas to outline the highs and lows. The Los Angeles artist raps about having a heart full of fear but preferring that to dying from an unwillingness to live. Later, Pink Siifu raps about leftover trauma from his father and how quickly life can turn upside down.

“48” is the first offering from Maxo’s upcoming album Even God Has A Sense Of Humor, coming soon via Def Jam. This will be his first release since his 2019 debut LP Lil Big Man. Since then, he has doled out sparse features, including an appearance on Pink Siifu’s “Call The Bro (Tapped In)” and Remy Banks’s “Tomorrow.”
