The world is watching as Los Angeles, the greater Southern California area, and Mexico are reeling from unprecedented natural disasters. Moreover, a tropical storm, Hilary, weakened from a hurricane before it landed on Sunday (August 20), the first of its kind to hit the region in over 80 years. Amid flash flood warnings, heavy rain, and the cancellation of various events such as concerts in the affected areas, this made many worry about not just this event, but the effects of climate change as a whole. Not only that, but a magnitude 5.1 earthquake also hit these locations, centered in the city of Ojai.

Cardi B was one of many celebrities to react to this, and though she kept things light, many others expressed more concern and well-wishes. “That earthquake woke me the f**k up,” the rapper expressed in a short video uploaded to her social media. Fortunately, as of writing this article, it seems like these natural disasters haven’t caused a lot of significant damage, whether physical or life-threatening. Still, it’s a scary sight to see, and hopefully this lack of danger persists throughout the affected areas’ recovery.

Tyler, The Creator Joins Earl Sweatshirt Onstage At LA Show

During a recent performance at the Novo in Los Angeles, Earl Sweatshirt surprised audience members with a very special guest. The Chicago-born rapper was joined onstage by fellow Odd Future artist Tyler, the Creator. The duo performed “Whoa” from Earl Sweatshirt’s 2013 album Doris, and fans went wild. The performance was in celebration of his solo debut’s 10-year-anniversary, with a few more anniversary shows still lined up for this month. As Tyler, the Creator makes his way onto the stage, attendees immediately erupt into a cheer. It’s no shock that the crowd was pleased to see the performer, as it’s not too often they get together these days. Partway through the song, Earl Sweatshirt approached him, and the two shared a hug.

Tyler wasn’t the only Odd Future associate to come out for the show. A photo began circulating this morning showcasing various members of the collective posing together. The photo features Syd, Taco, Mike G, Jasper Dolphin, and more. With that being said, several fans pointed out that Frank Ocean, Hodgy, and Left Brain weren’t in the photo. It left fans pining for an official reunion, however, in the past Tyler’s claimed it probably won’t happen.

Tyler, The Creator And Earl Sweatshirt Perform “Whoa”

In a 2020 interview, Tyler was asked about whether or not Odd Future would be putting out any new projects in the near future. “Nine times out of seven, no,” he replied. “I would be open to it, but I think everyone is kinda past that. I think some people base it on nostalgia rather than like, ‘Would it actually be good?’ Like, we don’t always need a Bad Boys 5. Even though I like the last one. N***a, it’s there, listen to it.”

Earlier this week, Tyler, the Creator also unveiled the lineup for his 2023 Camp Flog Gnaw carnival. Syd, Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G, Domo Genesis, and Left Brain are set to take the stage at the two-day event. Camp Flog Gnaw 2023 will take place on November 11 and 12 at Dodger Stadium, where fans can also catch performances from SZA, Ice Spice, Rex Orange County, Lil Yachty and, of course, Tyler himself.

LA Sports Franchises Combine For A Shockingly Low Donation To Maui Wildfire Victims

Last week, wildfires ravaged the island of Maui, which forms part of the State of Hawaiʻi. Driven by the perform storm of high-pressure areas and Hurricane Dora, high winds blew the fires across the island. Additional fires started when live electric poles collapsed. Hundreds were evacuated and millions of dollars of property was destroyed. Elsewhere, at least 55 people have died in the town of Lāhainā. Furthermore, smaller and quickly-contained fires broke out on the islands of Hawai’i and O’ahu.

The fires have been attributed to the spread of invasive grass species like Guinea Grass and a prolonged period of hotter, drier weather. Additionally, recent US National Climate Assessments show that the state has received less rainfall. This is consistent with projections about the impact of anthropogenic climate change. However, the specific cause of these wildfires is as yet unknown. President Joe Biden stated he was diverting “all available federal resources” to Hawaii. Meanwhile, celebrities like Floyd Mayweather made donations to help the victims. However, the donation put forward by the 12 professional sports teams in Los Angeles has been widely criticized.

LA Sports Teams Donate Less Than Half A Million Dollars

The Lakers announced that all 12 pro sports teams in LA are teaming up to donate $450,000 to help people affected by the Maui wildfires.

Through the Lakers, it was announced that 12 professional sports teams of Los Angeles (Angels, Angel City FC, Chargers, Clippers, Dodgers, Ducks, Galaxy, Kings, LAFC, Lakers, Rams, and Sparks) had come together to make a joint donation to victims of the wildfires. Those 12 franchises are worth a combined $31 billion. And yet they gave a joint donation of just $450,000. That’s an average contribution of $37,500.

What made the situation worse for many social media users was the self-fellating press release that went to great lengths to talk about how much California teams had utilized facilities in Hawaii before also having the audacity to ask fans to also contribute via the American Red Cross. All of this while donating an amount equivalent to 0.0014% of their combined worth. As a reminder, the Lakers are paying LeBron James $47.6 million for the 2023-24 season. Chalk up another W for rampant, late-stage capitalism.

50 Cent says that Los Angeles is “finished.” He made the comment while reacting to a viral video of a mob of thieves stealing an estimated $100k worth of merchandise. The group targeted a Nordstrom store at the Topanga Mall in Canoga Park on Saturday. According to the LAPD, there were about 30 to 50 people involved.

“I told you LA was finished,” 50 captioned a screenshot of the news story. “They are gonna have to lock the doors, appointment only. SMH.” YG, a native of L.A., commented on the post: “We ain’t finished. We just getting started.”

Drake Begs Audience To Not Throw Bras Because His Son Is Backstage

Bra-throwing has become a staple of the It’s All a Blur tour. Undergarments of increasingly large sizes have been launched on stage as Drake and 21 Savage have traveled across America. At the time of writing, the largest that has appeared on stage has been a 42L bra. Of course, the bra-throwing got additional media attention when a woman used it to promote her acceptance to Playboy‘s Centerfold content website.

So when Drake hit up the KIA Forum in Inglewood, bras once again rained down on the stage. However, instead of setting a new size record, Drake was in the mood to roast the contributors. Drizzy kicked one of the bras back off the stage, dismissing it as a “glue-on.” However, the Toronto rapper then made a passionate, and hilarious, plea to the assembled crowd.

Drake Says He “Can’t Talk About Titties”

“Hey y’all listen. I can’t talk about titties tonight here in LA because my son is at a show for the first time ever. So we gotta keep this real PG. Keep your bras on. Don’t be throwing them up here or nothing.” As if to prove this, Drake would later perform to his son, Adonis. It has not been reported if the crowd complied. However, it’s like they did, as there does not appear to be a clip of Drake more sternly telling them not to throw bras.

However, it wasn’t all breast-related fun in LA. Separate video footage also shows Drizzy getting into it with a fan in the crowd. The incident came after the LA show. Drake threw his towel into the crowd, aiming for a group of girls. However, it was instead caught by a man. This appeared to annoy the performer, who seemingly got into with the fan. He tried to square off before his security team convinced him to leave. It’s unclear if the girls were able to get their Drake towel. However, it does mark one of the more unpleasant fan interactions of the tour. Typically, everyone has been in on some sort of joke. Hopefully, the other three shows in LA aren’t quite as eventful for similarly negative reasons.

Dominic Fike Strips Down To Change Clothes On Stage

Dominic Fike stripped down to his boxers during a concert in Los Angeles, earlier this week. He did so while changing outfits on stage in full view of his fans. A clip of the incident is circulating on social media.

Fans had mixed responses to the move when Pop Crave shared it on Twitter. “You either get the ick or you like this there is no in-between and this is just giving me the ick,” one wrote. Another joked: “That man don’t have one song where he need to be doing all that.” Others remarked that Fike is “living his best life.”

The Los Angeles antics aren’t the only thing Fike has made headlines for on tour. During a more serious moment from a show last week, the 27-year-old paused his performance to reflect on the passing of his Euphoria co-star, Angus Cloud. “I guess I lost a friend of mine recently,” he said on stage while strumming his guitar. “He died the other night, which is wild to say because I don’t deal with grief often. I haven’t had a lot of death happen around me, and this was the first time I feel like I knew the person well enough to cry over and feel something. It was weird.”

“I sometimes look at people like sparks,” Fike continued. “I zoom out, and I think people have wavelengths. If you zoom out far enough, you see some people — probably not a lot of us at all — but I think if you zoomed out millions of miles, you would see this kid’s spark. You could see it from so far away, even if it was a short flash. He would light up a room, any room he walked in. He’s a fucking good dude. I felt stupid coming out here. Like, this is so stupid, doing a show and being happy. But he would’ve wanted me to do that. He would’ve been like, ‘No, do the show, have fun.’” Fike has performances scheduled throughout North America in the coming months. He’ll be traveling abroad in the fall.

Petition To Prevent Kanye West From Relocating Donda Academy To L.A. Receives 12,000 Signatures

Kanye West is facing opposition to his plan for moving his Donda Academy from a campus in Simi Valley to Cornerstone Christian Church in Los Angeles. Over 12,000 people have signed a petition to block the rapper from doing so, as caught by The U.S. Sun. The outlet reports that the petition has successfully thwarted Ye’s plan for his controversial private school.

The petition includes a letter directed to Pastor Ronald Nagin. It reads in part: “As your fellow Christians, we strongly object to the possibility of Cornerstone Church renting space to Ye (Kanye West). There is no room in God’s house for hatred. Allowing Ye’s Donda Academy to operate out of a place of worship would give it and him credibility that at this point they do not deserve. As your siblings in Christ, we ask you not to host Ye’s unaccredited private school on your church grounds.” The group appears to be referencing Ye’s erratic behavior in 2022, which included numerous antisemitic rants.

The latest roadblock for Donda Academy comes as Timanii Meeks became the third ex-teacher to file a suit against Kanye. In her lawsuit, Meeks claimed the school let her go after she complained about building safety. “Clearly, Ye has a big problem on his hands with this school, and the addition of Ms. Meeks to the complaint only serves to reinforce the nightmarish conditions for staff and students at Donda Academy,” attorney Ron Zambrano said.

He added: “Ms. Meeks was fired months before Cecilia Hailey and Chekarey Byers were terminated but all three clearly witnessed the same illegal and disturbing code violations and conduct at the school, and all three were given the same retaliatory and unlawful treatment merely for trying to stand up for the students’ rights to a meaningful education.” Be on the lookout for further updates on the lawsuit on HotNewHipHop.

Afroman Confirms Death Of L.A. Rapper Lil Sodi

Los Angeles rapper Lil Sodi has tragically passed away, Afroman recently confirmed via Instagram. Moreover, the two were close collaborators in the scene, going on tour together and working on many different ventures together within hip-hop. In fact, they were in the middle of a tour, and he shared a post mourning his friend and partner on Friday (August 4). However, he did not reveal exactly when Sodi passed away, and also did not disclose a cause of death. As such, it’s unclear whether that it still unknown information or if the South Central MC just wants to maintain privacy.

Furthermore, in his tribute post, Afroman included various dove emojis, prayer hands, a peace sign, and a blue heart. Not only that, but various other figures from within the rap landscape came forward with their own messages of sympathy, grief, and support. For example, Adam22 tweeted some pictures of them together and wished Lil Sodi well on his journey, as he had interviewed him for No Jumper back in 2021. L.A. Rapper Sirtanky Found Dead, Lifeguard Discovered Body Inside Barrel In Malibu

Los Angeles-area rapper Sirtanky has been found dead inside of a metal barrel that washed up on Malibu’s shores. Moreover, police suspect “foul play” and announced the launch of a full investigation into the rising MC’s death, which occurred under horrifying conditions. Reports from The Los Angeles Times indicate that a lifeguard found Sirtanky’s body (real name Javonnta Murphy) on Monday (July 31) on the shores of Malibu Lagoon State Beach. However, the coroner did not identify the body inside the barrel as Murphy until Thursday (August 3). Sirtanky is survived by his mother and four brothers, and recently released an EP titled The Chronicles of a Capricorn this January.

Furthermore, Lt. Hugo Renaya of the sheriff’s homicide unit stated that a maintenance worker first discovered the barrel on Sunday (July 30) on Malibu’s beach. Upon discovery, the worker did not open it, nor suspect anything was wrong about it. Then, the lifeguard found it to be suspiciously heavy, and discovered Sirtanky’s body inside. Given that his body wasn’t decomposing, it stands to reason in law enforcement’s eyes that he passed away shortly before the barrel showed up ashore. Still, the coroner did not confirm this conclusion as of writing this article.

In addition, police shared no further information or details about Murphy’s body or coroner reports. They confirmed that this is an open homicide case, as Sirtanky was naked when they found him in the barrel. “At about 8 p.m., there’s a high tide here,” Lt. Renaya remarked to the Times. “There’s a possibility that the container could have come in from the ocean and then got stuck in the lagoon. But we don’t know.”

Meanwhile, these details are what lead authorities to believe that this was a murder. Also, detectives found that this barrel came from presumably a printing company. As such, they maintained that they sought information on whether the company is somehow connected to the L.A. artist’s death. Don Toliver Surprised By Travis Scott During LA Show

Travis Scott made a surprise appearance at a Don Toliver show in LA this weekend. In fact, it was so much of a surprise appearance that it appeared to be a surprise to Toliver himself. While Toliver was dancing on top of a diner set, Scott can be seen dancing his way onto the set as well. He continues to dance behind Toliver before Toliver turns around and spots Scott. Toliver then proceeded to greet Scott excitedly before the two began to perform together. It’s very clear from his reaction that Toliver was not expecting Scott to come out.

Of course, Travis Scott has been kind of everywhere recently. While performing at Wireless Fest in London, he brought out Sexyy Red, who performed her song “SkeeYee” alongside him in a red cropped hoodie and black leggings. After the event, the pair were seen DJing at the exclusive London nightclub, Tape. Now he’s gone from having the guest appearances to being the guest appearance. However, there is something definitely iconic about being so much of a guest appearance that the headliner doesn’t even know you’re coming.

Of course, Travis Scott is currently a very busy man. Alongside the constant teasing and promotion of Utopia, Scott is currently doing the festival set circuit. He has primarily spent the last few weeks in Europe before he performs at Rolling Loud in Miami later this month. So far, Scott has given a fan the clothes off his back while performing in Dublin. Also in Ireland, Scott performed “Aye”, his track on Lil Uzi Vert’s The Pink Tape for the first time.

Elsewhere, he has teased a new collab with Michael Jordan, said that Utopia will have five separate album covers, and given away more shoes while in Germany. Furthermore, Scott’s next major festival stop, Rolling Loud, will reportedly feature tracks from Utopia on the setlist. As a reminder, Utopia is still not out. However, as mentioned, it appears to be coming sometime at the end of July.
