Latto Performs With TLC, Social Media Shares Mixed Reactions

Beyonce was the starlet many were most excited to see at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards as she took home the Innovator Prize from fellow icon Stevie Wonder. Still, the show had countless other pop culture crossovers, including a performance from TLC who surprised some viewers with the femcee they recruited to stand in for the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. In the past, Lil Mama has been a top contender for the part after playing the fallen member in the 2013 biopic, Crazy Sexy Cool, about their come-up. However, this year, it was Latto who joined Chilli and T-Boz for renditions of the girl group’s biggest hits, “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs.”

Big winners at the awards ceremony on Monday (April 1) include Taylor Swift (Best Artist), Morgan Wallen (Country Artist), SZA (R&B Artist, Album, and Song), Joshua Halling (Tour Photographer), Selena Gomez and Rema (Best Collaboration), and Latto took home Best Music Video for her work with Jungkook on “Seven.” As for performances, Justin Timberlake, Tate McRae, Green Day, and the evening’s host, Ludacris, were all on the roster. As per usual, viewers are sharing all of their thoughts on social media, and we’re seeing a lot of mixed reactions to the 777 hitmaker’s appearance.

TLC Taps Latto to Sing With Them at the iHeartRadio Music Awards

“Just last year TLC was introducing Latto to perform and [now] she is performing with them. SO ICONIC!!!” one fan account on Twitter/X wrote. “Now who tf approved of Latto rapping Left-eye’s verse for TLC’s ‘Waterfall’ performance?” a hater chimed in, desperate for answers.

Latto Performed ‘Waterfalls’ With TLC At The iHeartRadio Awards And Fans Are Gushing Over Her Rendition Of Left Eye’s Classic Verse

Latto might be one of the biggest names from her native Atlanta (although she’ll be the first to get really specific and clarify she’s from Clayton County), but she stands on the shoulders of giants. During her performance at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards (hosted by another Atlanta native, Ludacris), Latto acknowledged one of her late forebears with a rendition of Left Eye’s classic verse from TLC’s “Waterfalls” alongside TBoz and Chili. Her performance left fans on Twitter gushing in appreciation — although, of course, a certain fanbase looked less than enthused. However, even the Barbz couldn’t put a damper on the wave of love from the performance, which one accounted noted is a full-circle moment for Latto and TLC.

Meanwhile, with both Latto and Ice Spice in attendance — and no news of an outright fight, as of press time — fans are waiting with bated breath to see if the two rappers set their differences aside to celebrate their mutual successes or… well

Meanwhile, Latto’s got another big performance coming up: This Saturday is the NCAA’s Super Saturday event in Cleveland ahead of the Women’s National Championship Game. She’s racking up accomplishments left and right, and with so many co-signs from legends in addition to her own penchant for supporting up-and-coming artists, they are all well-deserved.

Latto Is the First Woman to Headline Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash

Latto is making history again as the first woman and female rapper to headline Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash this summer. This marks the 29th annual music festival and will be held at the State Farm Arena on June 22. The rapper recently stopped by the radio station to drop the announcement.

“It’s pressure for them, not me,” Latto said after the radio host asked if she felt pressure to be the first female headliner for the iconic Atlanta festival.

Latto teased that there would be special guests, who would be announced at a later date.

“I’m bringing out hellaaaaaaa special guests,” she posted on Instagram before inviting fans to buy tickets. Latto has collaborated with big names as of late, including Jennifer Lopez and Usher, just this year alone.

She is currently promoting “Sunday Service,” her latest solo single.

Get this: Latto may be the first woman to headline the Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash, but it won’t be the rapper’s first time performing at the festival. Last year, she was a surprise guest with Cardi B, NLE Choppa, and 21 Savage.

Expect this summer’s Hot 107.9’s Birthday Bash to feature performances by rapper Killer Mike, Key Glock, Hunxho, Bossman DLow, Boosie Badazz, Tee Grizzley, and Rob49. The event will pay homage to Atlanta’s Big Oomp Records, the city’s first independent record label, with rap pioneers Big Oomp and DJ Montay.

The story began when @TayRoseOnline took to Twitter to express their frustration about being unable to afford their rent. In a now-viral tweet, they wrote, “My rent due and I ain’t got it.” Little did they know, their tweet would catch the attention of Latto, who empathized with their situation and decided to take action.

Is Drake Dating Latto’s Sister Brooklyn Nikole?

When Drake crowned himself a “certified lover boy,” it wasn’t a reach. The “One Dance” rapper has been romantically linked to dozens of women across the industry. From Rihanna to SZA, Drake’s Canadian charm seems to pull in entertainment’s biggest names. Although he’s currently traveling the world with J. Cole for the It’s All A Blur Tour — Big As The What? Drake isn’t going to let his love life take a backseat.

According to fanfare online, Drake might’ve found his next romantic muse in Uproxx cover star Latto’s sister. Continue below for more information.

Is Drake Dating Latto’s Sister Brooklyn Nikole?

Yesterday (March 8), footage began to circulate online of Drake making a grand exit from a quiet dinner. Usually, the footage would not cause a huge stir. However, upon closer examination, fans pointed out that one of the guests exiting the restaurant with Drake was, in fact, Latto’s younger sister, Brooklyn Nikole. Although the clip doesn’t show the two showing any public displays of affection, users believe the two are, in fact, dating.

Fans’ first piece of supporting evidence is none other than Drake’s latest verse on OVO Records’ latest signee 4Batz’s song “Act II: Date @ 8 (Remix).” In the track, Drake raps, “How you get all of that body and face, though?/What kinda water they servin’ in ClayCo,” which listeners claim refers to Brooklyn Nikole’s stomping grounds.

The pair also follow each other on Instagram, and fans pointed out Drake often hearts Brooklyn’s uploads.

Users online had a mixed response to the claims, calling out the age difference between the two.

“Brooklyn is only 22 years old, and Drake is 37. When will he date someone his age???? I don’t see why he talks about marriage, but he keeps going after young girls,” wrote one user.

While others stick to the previously denied rumors that Latto and 21 Savage are a secret couple, therefore, her sister dating Drake is the perfect fit.

The public initially thought Drake started to date Camila Cabello after the pair were spotted on vacation. However, Cabello offered a work-related explanation for those images. But what about Drake’s last rumored girlfriend, Lilah Pi? Reports say the two called it quits late last year.

According To Joe Budden, The ‘Girl Rapper Wave Is Over’ For Several Reasons, But He Did Make A Few Exceptions

Joe Budden REVOLT Summit 2019

Joe Budden is no stranger to controversy. In fact, the musician-turned-media figure’s takes on trending topics on his namesake podcast often land him in hot water. In fact, his past opinions of women rap stars Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion had fans pulling out their pitchforks. Well, Budden’s recent hot take will have them on the attack yet again.

Yesterday (March 2), in a teaser clip for a forthcoming episode, Budden boldly claimed rap fans shouldn’t get excited about the push for women acts. “Y’all ain’t gonna want to hear it from me, but the girl rapper wave is over,” he said. “Just telling you what it is. I’m normally a few months ahead with this stuff, sometimes a few years ahead with this stuff. The girl rapper wave is finito.”

Budden went on to share the reasonings behind his claim. “I think labels are looking at it like, ‘Very few of y’all are selling records, it’s too much work to get your coin back, we got to go do brand deals all over the world with y’all, y’all are expensive, some of y’all are annoying,’ and none of these records are working,” he said.

But all hope isn’t lost, according to him, as there are a select few recording artists that he expects to have longevity. “The cream rises to the top,” he said. “So, Latto shall remain; Flo Milli shall remain; Rapsody will always be there, but she wasn’t really a part of [that scene]. But all of that, ‘Go find a girl, send her to Columbia, get it done, put her in the studio with fucking Mike WiLL [Made-It] or any one of them n****s’ … all that planting the girl in the scene, getting the record and it taking off — that wave is over.”

From ‘Fresh Prince’ To ‘The Vince Staples Show,’ How Hip-Hop Has Pushed The Boundaries Of Black TV

hip hop television

In a recent interview about his new Netflix series, The Vince Staples Show, the Long Beach rapper gave a profound answer to what seemed on the surface to be a relatively straightforward question. “Every character is you,” he said. “I think that’s what gives us nuance.”

Now, he was responding to a question about how his show character — who is ostensibly a fictionalized version of himself — differs from the genuine article. But the thing is, his answer could be applied more broadly — not just to Vince Staples, or even to any actor/character combination, but to the very idea of representation itself.

We love TV because we see ourselves in the characters and situations onscreen. This is what gives those depictions their authenticity, what pulls us in, what engages us. This goes doubly for Black folks, who so rarely see ourselves and our lives onscreen that practically any representation can feel like a breath of fresh air.

Hip-hop, which marked its “official” 50th birthday last year, has had a profound effect on that representation. These days, Black audiences see themselves most clearly in boundary-pushing shows like The Vince Staples Show and Atlanta, but those shows are only the latest in a proud lineage of Black TV shows that wear their hip-hop influences on their sleeves.

Shows like The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air and Living Single proved our favorite musicians could transition to screen stardom, while shows like Empire and The Breaks followed the behind-the-scenes inner workings of the business of hip-hop music (with an engrossing helping of drama to help them along), as shows like The Rap Game and Rhythm + Flow offered a path to stardom for real-life aspirants. A few years ago, I wrote about the hip-hop sketch comedy shows that also gave the culture a greater platform.

From Fresh Prince to Vince Staples, here’s a look at how hip-hop has pushed the boundaries of Black TV.

Sitcoms

In many ways, hip-hop’s legacy of extending the boundaries of television started with sitcoms (there’s a reason the title of this piece marks those two shows as bookends). Will Smith, the titular Fresh Prince of Bel Air, was the first rapper with a regular role in a scripted TV series, let alone a starring one. While it was the existing stardom from his and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s first album Rock The House that got his foot in the door, it was his acting chops that proved he belonged in Hollywood — and helped open the door for future rappers turned sitcom stars like Queen Latifah (Living Single), LL Cool J (In The House), Eve (who had her own eponymous show in 2003), Kid Cudi (How To Make It In America), and even Method Man and Redman (Method & Red, which ran for one truncated season on Fox in 2004).

The groundwork these shows laid allowed for the newer, more experimental approaches of shows like Atlanta and The Vince Staples Show, which drew inspiration from more offbeat shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, but paired them with hip-hop sensibilities. Atlanta, for instance, takes sharp detours in format and setting, sometimes opting for documentary-style episodes or standalone anthologies, which have been praised for moving not just Black TV but television as a whole forward.

Drama

The golden laurels for putting hip-hop on TV in a drama format almost certainly go to Empire, which took the dysfunctional family workings of classic soap operas like Dynasty and updated them to suit the trappings and lifestyle of a successful entertainment family, complete with a patriarch with a lengthy rap sheet. You can see shades of Succession, as well as star turns from both aspiring and established rappers. No doubt, the show’s success (including a slew of primetime Emmy Award nominations) opened the door for future network TV swings such as Queens. The theme of sisterhood from the latter carries over to Rap Sh!t, which chronicled the rags-to-riches story of a Miami rap duo inspired by City Girls.

Meanwhile, hip-hop’s fertile 50-year history offers a wealth of fascinating stories about its birth (The Get Down), development (The Breaks), and the biographies of some of his biggest stars (Wu-Tang: An American Saga). Meanwhile, rapper-turned-mogul 50 Cent has built an entire cinematic universe, Power, filling it with rappers like Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs, and Joey Badass.

Competition

Naturally, with the popularity of musical competitions like American Idol and The Voice, similar competition shows would focus on hip-hop, as the odds of succeeding on other shows can be slim (The X Factor eliminated teen rapper Astro, who nevertheless went on to have a solid film and TV career himself, including initially being cast on Euphoria, although he later turned the role down). One of the first rap-focused shows was 2003’s The Next Episode, which was produced by Showtime and Interscope Records to take advantage of the fervor surrounding Eminem’s film debut 8 Mile.

And while that show’s results would prove less than satisfactory, future efforts have produced genuine stars. Jermaine Dupri’s The Rap Game, which aired on Lifetime from 2016-2019, is notable for launching the career of Latto, as well as featuring future standouts like Flau’Jae. Meanwhile, Netflix’s Rhythm+Flow saw the rise and breakout of D Smoke, who went on to receive a Grammy nomination for his debut album Black Habits. The show is set to return in 2024.

Reality

As much as reality shows are looked down on as “trash TV,” there’s no denying their popularity — or their ability to share details of our favorite entertainers’ lives. Growing Up Hip Hop chronicles the lives of second-generation hip-hop stars, while a whole bunch of stars, from Snoop Dogg to Rev Run, have their own shows about their respective family lives and the often wholesome bonds that maintain them throughout their hectic lives.

Of course, no hip-hop reality show is better known or more engrossing than Love & Hip-Hop, the long-running series chronicling the ins and outs of romance in the rap scenes of several major cities. While many come for the mess, the show is responsible — at least in part — for the rise of one of the most notable names in rap: Cardi B, who spent several seasons in the cast of Love & Hip Hop: New York, becoming a breakout fan favorite and giving her the launching platform for one of the most successful careers in rap for a woman ever.

Latto “Sunday Service”: Breaking Down The References

Latto’s latest single “Sunday Service” has a lot involved with it. Mainly, audiences viewed it as her response track to Ice Spice’s “Think U The Sh*t (Fart).” The two artists have been throwing shade at each other in a variety of ways for the past few months. Listeners have mostly been drawing their own conclusions about what triggered this feud, especially since it appeared to bubble from nowhere. However, on the day the music video dropped, Latto cleared the air on Instagram Live, claiming the song was not a diss. Still, many feel as though this supposed beef is worth tuning into if the ladies keep it in the booth.

In 2024, virality is the name of the game when it comes to promotion and both artists took advantage of this in different ways. Ice Spice’s initial meme-based promo, unfortunately, only brought more scrutiny to her career. However, it’s clear that the song still has 2024 in a chokehold, thanks to platforms like TikTok. Meanwhile, Latto’s already had listeners in high anticipation from what many thought was the cover art alone. It featured her in a room with pictures from other women in the rap game from all generations, including a few ladies whom she supposedly has issues with. However, their eyes had black bars over them and Latto’s did too.

Latto Channels H.E.R

When an artist pays homage to another artist, audiences see it as a sign of respect. Latto’s “Sunday Service” music video has references to other artists and the media world overall. The hook of Latto’s “Sunday Service” features the lines “I don’t sing R&B but, b*tch, I’m really her” in a creative reference to the R&B singer H.E.R. In the music video, there’s a scene where Latto’s hair is styled like hers and she’s also sporting some circular shades. This is H.E.R’s signature look, especially with the sunglasses that she once wore to conceal her identity and make people focus on her music. Now, the shades have become a part of her identity. Latto’s homage shows that she has love for artists that aren’t in her genre of music but she admires them still. This quick but effective visual reference helped enhance the creativity of Latto’s lyrics.

Latto Channels Missy Elliott

One of the most prominent artists Latto references in her music video for “Sunday Service” is Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes. In one scene, she wears a yellow leather jacket while holding a flip phone. Many artists in the early 2000s wore jackets like this from a brand called Avirex. During this moment, she raps to a fisheye camera lens, a perspective viewers have seen many times in videos from those iconic rappers. Longtime fans know this is a tried-and-true technique from director Hype Williams. He used this effect in several of his music videos, including Missy Elliott’s classic “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).”

During the fisheye lens scene, Latto was in front of an obvious green screen. This choice doubled down on the nostalgic aspects. Many videos from that era look dated in comparison to today’s technology but it shows how far we have come. Viewers also noticed that Latto’s name and the name of the song were in the bottom left corner of the screen during this scene. This was common for music videos throughout the early 2000s, especially ones that played on music video countdown shows.

Latto References Belly

Latto also paid homage to the iconic opening scene from the Hype Williams directed film Belly. The deep rich blue lighting and glowing eyes are unmistakable. Latto recreates the exact look in her music video and even replicates the slow-motion camera movement. Multiple artists have referenced this scene across the years since the film’s release in 1998. Hype Williams is an all-time legend in directing music videos. It’s a full-circle moment for his star-studded film to be referenced in music videos too. Once again, Latto has referenced the greats that paved the way for her.

Latto Stands Out

Listeners have praised Latto’s “Sunday Service” for its bars and music video. In terms of her beef with Ice Spice, they have concluded this track was miles above the one from the “Deli” rapper. Latto and her team seem committed to showcasing her at the highest level possible and the intentionality with the promo and music video for this track are a testament to that. Knowing where you come from is the only way to know where you’re going and the homage that was shown in this video shows that Latto fully understands that.

Latto Will Headline The NCAA Super Saturday Concert Ahead Of The Women’s Basketball Championship Game

Uproxx cover star Latto has already had a busy 2024, releasing a new single, “Sunday Service,” after appearing on up-and-coming rapper Anycia’s single “Back Outside.” The Clayton County native has even more on her plate for the future, including judging Netflix’s second season of Rhythm + Flow. Still, that’s not stopping her from adding to her agenda, announcing a headlining set for the NCAA Super Saturday Concert ahead of the Women’s national basketball championship game in April. March Madness has arrived, and it looks like Latto has caught the basketball fever.

Maybe in Cleveland, she’ll get a chance to connect and clear the air with fellow Georgian MC and The Rap Game alum Flau’jae Johnson, who felt left out when her LSU teammate Angel Reese appeared in Latto’s “Put In Da Floor Again” video with Cardi B. It appears the schedules just didn’t line up, but Flau’jae couldn’t help wondering if the other Peach State rapper left her out on purpose.

Obviously, the ideal outcome would be Latto collaborating with yet another lesser-known artist, whose profile has been rising both on and off the court, thanks to some big-name co-signs like Wyclef Jean.

Latto’s Super Saturday show will be on April 6 at the Cleveland Public Auditorium and will be free to the public.
