Kaytranada has had us dancing to his mixes since his reign over SoundCloud almost a decade ago. His music embodies the importance of approaching hip-hop without monolithic preconceptions. A Canadian native, his beats forged a path to blend musical genres and push the bounds of what a hip-hop producer could be or sound like. He also highlights another important intersection in the hip-hop cultural landscape: that is, with the LQBTQ+ community.
In a deeply personal interview with The Fader in 2016, Kaytranada courageously shared his coming out story, stating, “I don’t call myself straight, I don’t call myself gay, it’s just me… But, I guess, I am gay.” Almost eight years ago, he expressed living with his deep depression and frustration for years until he finally relieved by coming out to his family and eventually the greater public via his interview.
His openness about his sexuality marked a significant moment in hip-hop, challenging stereotypes in a genre historically rooted in masculinity. For decades, hip-hop has grappled with issues of identity and representation. Yet, slowly but surely, voices like Kaytranada’s have begun to emerge, pushing boundaries and expanding the horizons of hip-hop’s cultural landscape.
Although a leader in the house and hip-hop production space, Kaytranada’s story is not just about music; it’s about courage, visibility, and the power to reshape narratives. Born Louis Kevin Celestin, Kaytranada began to create buzz with his hit SoundCloud mixes “If” and “Sock It To Me,” following with his first album, 99.9% released in 2016. After releasing Bubba, which won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2021, we knew Kay was here to stay.
Released in 2019, Bubba exemplifies his ability to seamlessly blend electronic, R&B, and hip-hop. His true talent lies in pairing infectious beats and soulful collaborations with artists like Estelle, Durand Bernarr, and Charlotte Day Wilson. From the infectious grooves of “10%” featuring Kali Uchis to the smooth vibes of “Midsection” with Pharrell Williams, each track on Bubba brought something unique, proving there would be no sophomore slump for the producer.
Kay’s latest album, Timeless, released on June 7th, continues to showcase his evolution as an artist. Including 17 tracks and four bonus tracks, the album offers a diverse range of guest vocalists, such as Sir and Don Toliver, and explores disco, soul, and hip-hop influences. One featured artist is especially dear to Kaytranada, his brother, Lou Phelps, who appears rapping on the album’s third track, “Call U Up.” Timeless demonstrates Kaytranada’s deep versatility and is a fierce competitor to his previous projects.
In an interesting move, Kaytranada began his tour in Paris on June 1, six days before the release of his latest project. Timeless tour dates will continue throughout the summer, promising an exciting musical experience for fans.
One special tour date, Kaytranada will join PinkPantheress, Rick Ross, and others at the III Points Festival in Miami this coming October. After collaborating on “Snap My Finger” on Timeless, fans are eager to see the musical chemistry between Kay and PinkPantheress in person. This upcoming performance also signifies Kaytranada’s return to the III Points lineup after a three-year hiatus.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Kaytranada reflected on his journey, acknowledging his growth in confidence and leadership within the studio. He admitted, “I think I’m kind of shy… It took me a while to understand, OK, I got to be the one that says ‘Do it like this.’” His personal and professional evolution is felt in his music, reflecting emotions over beats that resonate deeply with listeners.
He also commented on hip-hop’s growth within the LGBTQ+ community, “Now, we got Lil Nas X and rappers from the LGBT community just coming out. R&B artists, too,” he says. “It’s more acceptable and more welcome. I heard Snoop and Dr. Dre were performing at Pride in L.A. That’s crazy.”
As he continues to push boundaries and inspire others, we are witnessing Kaytranda’s personal and professional growth in real time; emotions reflect through his music over dope beats. With Pride Month coming to a close this year, Kaytranada’s story resonates deeply, symbolizing progress and acceptance within the industry. Artists like Kaytranada, Syd, and Lil Nas X pave the way for broader inclusion and diversity in hip-hop.
The summer of 2023 was all about KAYTRAMINE. In 2024, the hottest months of the year beloing to Maetranada. That is the unofficial name of singer/producer duo Maeta and KAYTRANADA. The former is a Indianapolis, Indiana native and Roc Nation signee. KAYTRANADA is the world-renowned multi-genre instrumental genius who works with everyone. These two talents have a work history together, joining up for a couple of tracks over the last couple of years. However, Endless Night is the first time that Maeta is leaning on the Canadian for a full body of work. This is not an LP, rather a seven-track EP with zero features.
To be honest, that does not really bother us. When you have a beautiful voice like Maeta, and the colorful production of a KAYTRANADA, that is all you need really. The 24-year-old balladeer was very thrilled to drop Endless Night, according to her team. “I’m so excited for this project to be out. I just want everyone to have fun, dance and be free this summer!”. Well, they certainly will be as both are making it easy as ever to float away and loose themselves on the dancefloor. There is never a dull moment on this EP, even with the sultrier takes on dance. The presence of R&B is strong still and in a good way. Of course, fans just a got full listening experience from KAYTRANADA a couple of weeks ago with the highly-praised TIMELESS. But for Maeta, this project comes a year after her LP When I Hear Your Name, which featured Ty Dolla $ign, James Fauntleroy, Lucky Daye, and more.
It’s impossible to divorce music from the social, cultural, and physical spaces that it was born out of and exists in, and when it comes to musicians perfectly evoking a particular location, KAYTRANADA is one of the industry’s most accomplished magicians. His production, songwriting, and groove-driven sensibilities allow him to turn any set of headphones or festival crowd into a 5AM nightclub propelled by killer house beats and even better melodies. It’s a staple of his career that brought vivid and lively projects in 99.9%, BUBBA, and the collab album KAYTRAMINÉ. But the question is, does TIMELESS allow us to immerse into that party or are we back to checking our phones?
If you’re at all a fan of the Haitian-Canadian creative, it’s no surprise that the latter option, albeit a big risk on this new hour-long album, is practically impossible. Compared to previous work, KAYTRANADA built something a little more consistent groove-wise, a little less exploratory in its genre fusions, but even more focused on crisp production, engaging songwriting, and keeping your mellowed attention with few breaks in mood or rhythm. It doesn’t always result in a winning formula, but it’s very compelling to hear these inspirations from so many genres coalesce into some of his best pop-adjacent material yet. If nothing else, it’s proof that the “#RICHAXXHAITIAN” musician can still have tricks up his sleeve even if the goal this time around is constance.
“Pressure” is a perfect preview of this, as the rubbery kicks, chopped Lupe and Hov sample, and staccato keys let listeners know that this will go down as one of the funkiest albums of 2024. TIMELESS is a very fitting title, as the album’s main strengths are the cleanliness of the production and the cohesion and catchiness that the songwriting offers, aspects that KAYTRANADA owes most deeply to classic house and disco production plus its soul and funk roots. Other instrumental moments like “Dance Dance Dance Dance,” “Seemingly,” and “Please Babe” are impressive isolations of the beat-making’s prowess, whereas cuts like “Witchy” with Childish Gambino, “More Than A Little Bit” with Tinashe, and “Video” with Ravyn Lenae showcase bubbly, buttery, and satisfying interplay between verse melodies, instrumental embellishments, soaring choruses, and tension-building bridges.
Furthermore, as far as the production quality itself, there’s a consistent sheen to TIMELESS‘ tracks that puts it somewhere in between the brightness of 99.9% and the submerged feel of much of BUBBA. It doesn’t craft a wholly unique sonic identity, but it definitely switches things up here and there to entice and excite skeptics. There’s the melancholy “Feel A Way” with Don Toliver, the frantic and buzzy “Drip Sweat” with Channel Tres, and tender Latin percussion on cuts like “Lover/Friend” with Rochelle Jordan and “Hold On” with Dawn Richard. As for classic KAYTRANADA funk and groove, look no further than the infectious guitars on “Weird” with Durand Bernarr.
TIMELESS is perhaps KAYTRANADA’s most stacked and well-performing guest list to date. He himself grabs the mic on “Stepped On,” which is one of the more frustrated points in the album’s constant “highs and lows” narrative about falling in love, having fun, letting go, living in the moment, and all the things that the album doesn’t have to say for you to feel through the jams. In terms of chemistry, The collaborative highlight is easily “Do 2 Me” with Anderson .Paak and SiR, with the most progressive instrumental on the record. PinkPantheress also emerges as a no-brainer recipe for collaborative greatness on “Snap My Finger,” and we hope there’s more on the way.
However, despite the fitting but imperfect transitions and the generally cohesive aesthetics and guests, there are still some bare and stretched-out elements to TIMELESS that both casual listeners and longtime fans might dismiss. While the vocal melodies are always tight, the short runtimes on “Spit It Out” with Rochelle Jordan, “Call U Up” with Lou Phelps, and “Stuntin” with Channel Tres can’t save them from feeling disengaged loops towards the end. Still, Thundercat’s comical roasting sounds gorgeous on “Wasted Words,” and Charlotte Day Wilson’s performance is heavenly on “Still,” so it’s overall not a massive blemish.
With that in mind, the 31-year-old crafts music that is as lush, fun, catchy, intoxicating, and above all loving as it’s ever been on TIMELESS. It feels like the most amorphous, watery, and meticulous genre fusion that he’s done up to this point, even if it does sacrifice the vibrance and unpredictability of previous LPs for the consistency and wide appeal of what many might call a “pop era.” But KAYTRANADA worked too hard on this tracklist flow, the production, and the quality of the songwriting to say that as a dismissive comment. It’s just another step in his evolution, one that seems to target artistic growth in the studio over a sonic change in these sessions’ results.
Frankly, TIMELESS further defines the classic KAYTRANADA bounce as a single idea rather than the multi-faceted amalgamation of shifting focuses and appeals that albums like 99.9% are so beloved for. By the time we hit the jittery and wavy “Out Of Luck” with Mariah The Scientist, some aspects of this project might feel redundant to some listeners. But it’s primarily a house, funk, and disco record, and one that tactfully succeeds in keeping the groove alive, creating sweetly addictive songs, and immersing you in the party. Here’s hoping that KAYTRA’s next moves, no matter what direction they go in, continue to champion this timeless dedication and heartfelt passion for the joy of “Think (About It)” drum breaks and the warmth of melody.
KAYTRANADA is giving Metro Boomin a run for his money. The latter might have more hit singles under his belt, but KAYTRANADA has proven to be one of the most versatile and adventurous producers of the last few decades. There isn’t a sound or a style he isn’t comfortable with, and he always seems to bring out the best in his collaborators. It helps, of course, that he’s able to attract some of the most exciting names in hip-hop and R&B. Timeless is his first solo album since 2019, and it was well worth the wait.
The biggest guest features on the album deliver. Childish Gambino dips back into his “Redbone” bag with the bouncy, constantly mutating funk jam “Witchy.” KAYTRANADA and Childish Gambino seemed like a great fit on paper, and it’s satisfying to see them deliver on what was easily the most anticipated song. PinkPantheress’ airy vocals mesh perfectly with KAYTRANADA’s jittery production on “Snap My Finger,” while Anderson .Paak and SiR add tons of gritty charisma to the Neptunes-laced instrumental “Do 2 Me.” There are a few missteps, like the overly cutesy “Wasted Words” with Thundercat, but the album hits way more often than it misses, as evidenced by standouts like “Drip Sweat” and “Hold On.”

Tour dates
At the time of writing, Kaytranada has not announced a tour in support of Timeless.
The video for “Drip Sweat,” the new single by Kaytranada and Compton house-hop rapper Channel Tres from Kaytra’s upcoming album Timeless, is slippery, steamy, and wet. The two dance music mainstays throw a packed rave in a building’s lobby, complete with strobe lights and a blasting sprinkler system. Think of the rave scene from Blade with more Black people and less blood.
The song is the second single from Timeless after Kaytranada revealed that the previously released “Lover/Friend” with Rochelle Jordan and “Stuntin” also with Channel Tres, were the introductory singles for the album cycle. The album is Kaytra’s first since 2019’s Bubba, which won a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album and a Grammy for Best Dance Recording for its single “10%.”
Although Kaytranada hasn’t released a solo album in five years, he maintained a presence in the limelight thanks to his collaborations with IDK (Simple) and Aminé (Kaytraminé). He also produced underground hits for R&B stars like Anderson .Paak, Joyce Wrice, Ravyn Lenae, and Victoria Monét, playing at last year’s Coachella with a slew of guest stars, including Kali Uchis. This August, he’ll be one of the performers at Aminé’s inaugural festival, The Best Day Ever.

Ahead of his new album Timeless coming out next week on June 7, KAYTRANADA recently gave Rolling Stone a wonderful interview. In it, he reflects on much of his personal evolution and his career trajectory, with one particular moment being a key point of support and reminiscing. Moreover, the Haitian-Canadian producer came out as gay in a 2016 piece with The FADER, and took this RS opportunity to reflect on that development. Specifically, he spoke on how Freddie Gibbs was one of the first artists to champion his experience and perspective, which gave him hope moving forward in an industry that used to treat the LGBTQIA2+ community much more harshly, and that sometimes still falls victim to that bigotry.
“I still don’t think many people know that I’m gay. Even with that story,” KAYTRANADA remarked to Rolling Stone. “Freddie Gibbs was one of the first artists that was like, ‘I’m proud of you, man, keep doing your thing.’ I thought that was crazy. That gave me hope. Now, we got Lil Nas X and rappers from the LGBT community just coming out. R&B artists, too. It’s more acceptable and more welcome. I heard Snoop [Dogg] and Dr. Dre were performing at Pride in L.A. That’s crazy.” Freddie even quote-tweeted coverage of this thankfulness with another sweet message: “That’s my homie in real life tho [fingers crossed emoji].”
Freddie Gibbs Responds To KAYTRANADA’s Thankfulness
As for their link-ups, KAYTRANADA and Freddie Gibbs have a couple of tracks together, namely “My Dope House,” “Alexys,” and the KAYTRAMINÉ cut “letstalkaboutit.” Hopefully the Big Boss Rabbit and the “Lover/Friend” sonic wizard reunite for some more collabs in the future. While Freddie won’t appear on Timeless (as listed at press time), there are plenty of other amazing guests to look forward to. These include Channel Tres, Childish Gambino, PinkPantheress, Don Toliver, Charlotte Day Wilson, Thundercat, Anderson .Paak, Mariah The Scientist, Ravyn Lenae, and many more.
Meanwhile, KAYTRANADA is fresh off releasing one of the surefire summer bops of 2024 with Mach-Hommy and 03 Greedo’s “#RICHAXXHAITIAN,” the titular track off Mach’s newest masterpiece. If Timeless lives up to that moniker, we’re in for an absolute treat. Surely we’ll get some more breezy jams and bops to blast all the way through blistering days under the sun. But most importantly, it’s great to hear KAYTRA reflect on those who had his back every step of the way.
KAYTRANADA is one of the very best producers of this generation. A big reason why he has built out such a great career is because of his ability to be a chameleon. He can effortlessly blend into almost any genre imaginable and it why we are so thrilled for his next full-length. KAYTRANADA will be coming through with his first solo album since 2019’s BUBBA during the first full week of June. It will be titled Timeless, and you can stream it on the 7th.
Of course, he did come through with the collaborative effort KAYTRAMINE during the summer of 2023 with rapper and singer Amine. But ending this solo drought is a big deal and the Haitian-Canadian producer is celebrating it by going all out with the features. According to Genius, he is grabbing guests like Don Toliver, Tinashe, Anderson .Paak, SiR, Childish Gambino, and more. With all of the incredible firepower, this is sure to be one of the best summer albums of the year.
Listen To “Lover/Friend” By KAYTRANADA & Rochelle Jordan
But before we get the LP, KAYTRANADA has a single to bring out first. It is titled “Lover/Friend,” and that name might sound familiar to you. The Rochelle Jordan collab was a part of a four-track EP that released at the end of November 2023. It included the other eventual promotional single “Stuntin” with Channel Tres, as well as each track’s instrumentals. So, what is the reason for the reissue of “Lover/Friend?” This is the extended album version, as the single edition was 3:32. This update provides an extra 47 seconds and has slightly different mixing. You can hear what we mean by checking it out above.
What are your thoughts on this brand-new version of “Lover/Friend” by KAYTRANADA and Rochelle Jordan? Do you prefer this rendition over the single edition, why or why not? Does this get you excited for KAYTRANADA’s upcoming album Timeless? Is this the better promotional single over “Stuntin” with Channel Tres? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding KAYTRANADA. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.
Quotable Lyrics:
No defenses, satisfaction Stopped your heart, just to get a reaction Kept you wanting, let it haunt you Can’t deny, when it’s right No one has to lose
Just in time for Aminé’s The Best Day Ever Festival, genre-bending Toronto producer Kaytranada has announced the release date for his third studio album (fourth if you count Kaytraminé), Timeless. Kaytranada shared the pre-save link for the album from his official website, on X (RIP, Twitter dot com), with fan accounts taking note and sharing the link on the platform.
Kaytranada also retweeted (reposted?) the link to his November single release “Lover/Friend,” noting, “those were the first singles off the album, run that back.”
Timeless will be Kaytranada’s first full-length solo album since 2019’s Bubba, his second album overall, which won a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album and spawned the single “10%,” which also won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. The album, which took influences from R&B, House, Afrobeat, and more, featured appearances from Charlotte Day Wilson, GoldLink, Kali Uchis, Masego, Mick Jenkins, Pharrell Williams, Tinashe, and more.
