Jermaine Dupri And Jacquees Create A Bouncy Love Song With “Pick It Up”

The man responsible for so many R&B hits in the early 2000s is back with a new collaboration single for 2023. The Asheville, North Carolina native, Jermaine Dupri, is back with a new special guest. He is more known for his work behind the scenes when it comes to crafting songs, but Dupri still has his own solo catalog. However, it has remained dormant since the year 2001. Before this year, he only had two albums released on streaming.

Firstly, Life In 1472 (The Original Soundtrack) churned out some classics such as “Money Ain’t a Thang,” which featured Jay-Z. Then, fans would have to wait around two years for his next effort, Instructions. That boasted “Welcome To Atlanta” with Ludacris. That would be the last we would hear from Dupri on the solo side of things, though. That is, until 22 long years passed by. For Motivational Use Only, Vol. 1 was put out back in April and it was a collab album with Curren$y.

The beat is bouncy ear candy and it makes for a fun listen. Jacquees is singing his heart out on this cut and hopefully they can make more tracks because this is a vibe.

Birdman Believes The South Dominates Hip-Hop

Birdman thinks that the South reigns supreme when it comes to the conversation regarding rap dominance. While the conversation typically tends to be East coast vs. West coast rap, Birdman says Jermaine Dupri is a big reason why Southern rappers saw commercial success. During an episode of The 85 South Show podcast earlier this month, Birdman shared his thoughts on which region dominates the hip-hop music scene. The Cash Money Records boss said that the South has taken over from both the West and the East. He believes that once people caught onto the South’s sound, they started paying attention. “But once they caught on to us, like it is now, I don’t think they’ll ever get it back,” Birdman explained. “We here forever.”

However, Birdman shared how he feels Jermaine Dupri played a role in bringing some spotlight to the South. “[He] really broke that barrier,” Birdman said. “Went up there and was fighting [for Southern rappers].” “He went up there and really made them play our music. They wouldn’t play our music at all. I got a lot of respect for Jermaine Dupri.”

Birdman Feels That The South Will Always Stay On Top

Following his initial remarks, Birdman reaffirmed his stance, and doubled down on his comments. He continued to assert that the East Coast and West Coast would never again have the dominance they once enjoyed in the music industry. “We [the south] ain’t never letting this s**t go,” he said. “This a feeling, this a vibe and I don’t think we’ll ever let it go. Ever. And I say that respectfully. I just don’t think we’ll ever let the vibe and the motion go.”

While Birdman feels strongly about the South being on top, Jermaine Dupri feels it needs more recognition. Moreover, even til this day, Dupri is making it know that the South needs to stay on the map and deserves more shine. He’s making it clear that Atlanta specifically needs to be recognized for its contributions to hip-hop. Just last month, he expressed on social media how he wished Atlanta got more recognition during hip-hop anniversary celebrations. “Just for the record!” Dupri started in his rant. “No brands have done any dinners or get togethers in Atlanta celebrating the 50 anniversary of HipHop. That’s Crazy!!!”

Jermaine Dupri Addresses Tweet About Hip Hop 50 Events In ATL

Jermaine Dupri seemed to rub folks the wrong way with his tweet about brands not honoring Atlanta’s contributions during Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary. “no brands have done any dinners or get-togethers in Atlanta celebrating the 50 anniversary of Hip Hop,” he wrote on Friday (August 18). His comments sparked a firestorm of controversy as his tweet made its rounds on social media.

However, not a ton of folks seemed to agree with Jermaine Dupri. Since the post, he’s received an onslaught of criticism, with fans asking why doesn’t he do it himself. “Nigga ain’t YOU a brand from Atlanta?! Why YOU ain’t do nothing,” one person commented. Another fan wrote: “I’m not even trying to be rude. I consider you a legend. So I’m wondering why don’t you do one?’” Conversely, on Monday (August 21), Dupri returned to Twitter to address the negative feedback.

Jermaine Dupri Says He Has No Beef With Hip Hop 50 Events In New York

Dupri also made it clear that he has no beef with New York and that his sentiments were regarding business. “I see someone is trying to take my tweet and create the narrative that [I’m] mad about what’s been happening in NY for #HipHop50 compared to what’s been happening in Atlanta, lol that’s completely false,” he tweeted. “My statement was all [business] related.”

In other related news, Jermaine Dupri and Drake have teamed up for a docu-series about the iconic Atlanta club, Magic City. The series will detail the back story of the famous venue and its decades-long influence on rap. Charles Todd will serve as the director of Magic City: An American Fantasy. 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi, among others, will all be making appearances. “Magic City is a second home for me. It’s the one place where celebrities, hustlers, politicians, and Atlanta locals all come together. I’ve watched it evolve over the years from a local joint to an internationally recognized spot. It’s about time we tell this story the right way,” executive producer Dupri said in a statement.

The charming clip sees the rapper showing off his bartending skills whipping himself up a drink to enjoy during the show. Beyonce also delivered her most up-to-date statement on Lizzo during the show. The “About Damn Time” singer is in hot water following a lawsuit made by her dancers alleging she created a hostile work environment. In the first Renaissance stop after the news broke Beyonce skipped over her name in the Queens Remix of “Break My Soul.” But last night she made her thoughts on the situation very clear for fans, saying “I love Lizzo” during the show.
