A Seemingly Simple ‘Jeopardy’ Category About Rap Genres Left Contestants Stumped And Viewers Pissed Off

Jeopardy is supposed to challenge your knowledge. But during a recent episode of the beloved quiz show, researchers decided to dial back the intensity or so they thought. Over on Jeopardy’s official TikTok page, they shared a clip (viewable here) where contestant’s hip-hop IQ was put to the test.

The category titled “Rap Genres,” was crafted to be soft balls for players to bring in quick cash. However, many contestants were left stumped as host Ken Jennings rattled off questions. Going for the gusto, one contestant (Greg) sets thing off with the $800 clue: “The name of this genre associated with Memphis may be a mix of ‘crazy’ & ‘drunk.’”

The contestant correctly answers with “crunk” but things quickly went down hill. Greg then circles back to the $1,200 question: “Billboard says, the album ‘Trap Muzic’ by this rapper and actor ‘introduced ‘Trap’ to the masses.’”

Despite T.I.’s face being plastered on the screen, no contestant took a swing at answering the prompt.

This was folded up by the $1,600 question about about Big Freedia, the Queen of New Orleans bounce, which sparked a look of confusion on every contestant’s face.

But don’t worry Greg was able to nail the $2,000 question about Shaboozey thanks to the “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and Beyoncé hint. However, viewers at home aren’t pleasure with the sheer amount of fumbles. In the comment section of the post, they were sure to let the show know.

“Knowing who Shaboozey is but not knowing T.I. Is diabolical 🤣🤣,” wrote one user.

“Alex Trebek, would have lost it when they didn’t know T.I.,” penned another.

“Why would he keep picking this category if he clearly didn’t know it though 😂,” chimed another.

Well, this isn’t the first time Jeopardy contestants sparked outrage over their lacking music knowledge.

Drake And Kendrick Lamar’s Feud Is Officially ‘Jeopardy!’-Famous As It Was Just A Clue On The Show

Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s feud has been one of the biggest pop culture events of 2024 so far: Lamar’s “Not Like Us” is a No. 1 hit (again), the song was mentioned at the ESPYs, and now, the beef has reached Jeopardy! status.

One of the categories in the Double Jeopardy! round from last night’s (July 16) episode was called “Diss-track-tions,” and the $800 question was, “In May 2024, these 2 competitors went back & forth with tracks like ‘Family Matters’ & ‘Meet The Grahams.’” A contestant correctly said, ‘Who are Kendrick Lamar and Drake?’

Per J! Archive, the category also referenced beefs between Eminem and The Game, Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G., 50 Cent and Cam’ron, and Nas and Jay-Z. Contestants managed to answer all of the clues correctly. J! Archive also notes last night’s episode was taped on May 23, at which point all of the songs currently associated with the Drake/Kendrick feud so far had been released (but before the “Not Like Us” video dropped).

Meanwhile, the feud has mostly died down and it seems Drake has more pressing issues to deal with at the moment. Toronto just got hit some some extreme weather, which has left Drake’s mansion in the city absolutely filled with water.

Drake & Kendrick Lamar’s Feud Becomes Viral “Jeopardy!” Prompt

Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef has made its way to Jeopardy! after the show featured a “Diss-Track-Tions” category on Tuesday night. As caught by Rolling Stone, the show highlighted several iconic beefs from throughout hip-hop history. For $800, host Ken Burns read: “In May 2024, these 2 competitors went back and forth with tracks like ‘Family Matters’ and ‘Meet the Grahams.’”

Contestant Isaac quickly buzzed in with the obvious: “Who are Kendrick Lamar and Drake?” For $2,000, the category brought up JAY-Z and Nas’ infamous feud. “The title of this hate letter from Nas to Jay-Z that shares its name with an anesthetic drug now means ‘to insult publicly,’” the prompt read, referencing the track, “Ether.” The other prompts included 50 Cent and Cam’Ron, The Game and Eminem, as well as The Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac.

When clips of the incident made their way to social media, fans reflected on the impact of Lamar and Drake’s feud. “This rap beef made it to mainstream TV and will go down in history,” one user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote. Another added: “This beef is gonna transform rap n culture in its entirety. Its transending the genre before our very eyes dawg like its crazy fr.”

“Jeopardy!” Highlights Kendrick Lamar & Drake’s Beef

The Jeopardy! segment comes after Lamar’s hit diss track, “Not Like Us,” returned to number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart in the wake of him releasing a music video for the song. It also popped up to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 after the weekend of July 4th. Be on the lookout for further updates on Drake and Kendrick Lamar on HotNewHipHop.

“The Breakfast Club” Question On “Jeopardy!” Leaves Contestants Stumped

Jeopardy! is a funny way to see some pop culture crossovers that you may not have expected, especially for the hip-hop world. Moreover, a recent question had contestants scratching their heads, something they could’ve avoided if they just caught up on their New York rap radio more often. This was the prompt itself: “In 2024, Jess Hilarious joined this radio show with Charlamagne Tha God & DJ Envy.” Of course, unless you had no idea what this headline was about, we know this to be The Breakfast Club. But turns out that the legendary program might still have incentive to expand their reach and audience so that they truly become a household name.

Furthermore, those unfamiliar with The Breakfast Club that follow hip-hop casually have probably seen clips of it dozens of times without realizing. In fact, that goes for pop culture consumers in general, as there have been a lot of Twitter memes and the like that stem from Charlamagne, Envy, and now Jess Hilarious’ show. If you’re interested in checking them out more closely, you picked a very interesting time to do so. They have a lot of big stories to talk about in the rap game right now, including the Diddy scandal that is developing in ugly ways.

Jeopardy! Contestants Didn’t Know What The Breakfast Club Is

Another example is the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, which The Breakfast Club has done a great job of breaking down and analyzing from various standpoints. We’ll see what else happens this year that will warrant their undivided attention, and what other changes could occur to shift the show in another direction. After all, Angela Yee’s departure is sorely felt, and although Jess has added her own amazing dynamic to the program, fans wonder whether this is the end of the change. But we’re excited to see the current cohort continue to build rapport, get years of lore under their belt, and continue to fight negativity.

Meanwhile, The Breakfast Club will probably have a lot of other controversial or divisive moments as well. One of these was a pretty cringe-worthy Candace Owens appearance, and we have to give them grace to indulge in these more hot-button moments every once in a while. We’ll see what form those take in the future, whether it’s a wild guest or internal discussion. Who knows what could happen next to get them a Jeopardy! answer down the road?

A ‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Got Beyoncé And Queen Latifah Confused Despite A ‘Greatest Rappers Of All Time’ Category

The world is still abuzz over the Queen Bey. This past Sunday (February 11), Beyoncé broke the internet after dropping two new country singles, “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Showcasing her versatility, Bey continues to show us that she can nail any genre.

In fact, she did so last year when she dropped her rap single, “My House,” which premiered in tandem with her Renaissance concert film. As a result of her fire bars, one might think this would put her on some sort of greatest rappers of all time list. At least, such was the case for a contestant on Jeopardy.

In a category for “50 Greatest Rappers of All Time,” contestants were given a prompt, which read “She invited us to ‘come into my house’ and also deal with ‘the wrath of my madness’; We bow down before this queen.”

One contestant answered, “Who is Beyoncé?” presumably thinking the prompt was referring to “My House.” Unfortunately, this was not the correct answer.

Another contestant answered “Who is Queen Latifah,” which was in fact, the correct answer. The prompt was alluding to Latifah’s songs, “Come Into My House” and “Wrath Of My Madness” from her 1989 album, All Hail The Queen.

Nicki Minaj And Ice Spice Accomplished A Coveted ‘Jeopardy’ Feat, But Still Left One Contestant Stumped

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have maximized the joint slayage this year. Back in April, the two released a remix of Ice’s “Princess Diana” from her debut EP, Like…?. Then in June, the two released “Barbie World,” their collaboration from the Barbie soundtrack.

“Barbie World” has since earned the ladies nominations for “Best Rap Song” and “Best Song Written For Visual Media” at the 2024 Grammys. Still, despite the song and its artists’ prolific presence, there are some people who still don’t know who they are.

Today (November 21), in an episode of Jeopardy, the song was and one of the rappers was used in a prompt on the show.

“Ice Spice and this singer whose fans are called Barbz are fittingly on the Barbie soundtrack with ‘Barbie World,’” read the prompt.

Of course, any Barb would instantly know that the answer is, in fact, Minaj, however, the contestant didn’t seem to be privy in Barb-speak.

The contestant answered, “Who is Aqua?” only to be corrected and told that the answer was Minaj. Though, the contestant wasn’t too far off. The song “Barbie World” features a prominent sample of Aqua’s hit single “Barbie Girl.”

But perhaps a Jeopardy shout-out is another feat the two rappers can add to their resume.

You can see the Jeopardy clip above.

Ice Spice And Nicki Minaj Question On “Jeopardy!” Has Contests Lost: Watch

Ice Spice and this singer whose fans are called Barbz are fittingly on the Barbie soundtrack with “Barbie World.” That was the question on Jeopardy! that had these contests searching for much of anything to say. According to XXL, this episode of the long-running television game show. This edition of the iconic program aired on November 17. They were in the midst of the Champions Wildcard series. The question was under the “Pop Music” category for $1000. Additionally, it was the last one of the bunch.

Tim was the contestant to choose the category and he was down a considerable amount of money compared to the two remaining competitors. Amy was sitting in the lead with $4200. On the other hand, Scott was not too far behind at $2,200. Tim was at $1600, so this was an important question for him to steal with about a category and a half left. Unfortunately, this Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice question had him, Amy, and Scott is disarray.

The correct answer of course was Nicki, but these geniuses appear to not be too keen on rap music. Tim was the first to guess with “Aqua.” While it was in the ballpark because of the pop duo’s smash hit “Barbie Girl,” it was narrowly off. At least he submitted an answer, though. Amy and Scott were speechless, but maybe it was to save the money they had.

What are your initial thoughts on these contestants not getting this question right about Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice? Is this song still in your rotation? Are you surprised that these Jeopardy! contestants could not find the wrong answer? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. ‘Jeopardy!’ Contestants Got Stumped By A Clue That Every Taylor Swift Fan Knows

“The Lakes,” a bonus track from Folklore, isn’t one of Taylor Swift‘s best-known songs. Unless you’re a Swiftie, and every song of hers is her best-known song (except “Me!” which still hasn’t played during the Eras Tour). But if one of the three contestants on Tuesday’s episode of Jeopardy! had known “The Lakes,” they would have gone home that much richer.

The category in Final Jeopardy was “Literary Groups.” The clue: “Windermere, Thirlmere & Grasmere are 3 of the sites that helped give a 19th-century literary group this name.” None of the contestants, Diandra D’Alessio, Nathan Dennis, and Ilhana Redzovic (who ultimately won), correctly guessed the answer, which was, what is the Lake Poets. They also revealed themselves as non-Swifties, as the name “Windermere” appears in “The Lakes” (“Take me to the Lakes where all the poets went to die / I don’t belong and, my beloved, neither do you / Those Windermere peaks look like a perfect place to cry”).

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, “Though the answer eluded the players, fans of Swift’s were quick to point out the answer on Twitter.” One wrote, “Got final jeopardy right thanks to @taylorswift13! All the contestants need to have a tutorial from the lyrics of Professor Swift,” while another added, “Thank you Taylor Swift, because of you I got final jeopardy right tonight.”

Jeopardy! should do a Swift-themed episode with clues like:

“Nothing good ever starts in this type of motor vehicle.”
“What is, a getaway car?”

Finally, an episode of Jeopardy! that wouldn’t make me feel like a total dummy.

JID Invited The Fan Who Correctly Answered His ‘Jeopardy’ Prompt To One Of His Shows

You know you’ve made it once your name is used in the form of a question on Jeopardy. Last month, on an episode of Jeopardy, rapper JID was surprised to see a prompt referencing his 2021 collaboration with Imagine Dragons called “Enemy.

On the February 24 episode, the prompt read “‘Who the baddest? It don’t matter ’cause we at your throat,’ This 3-letter guy raps on ‘Enemy,’ his collaboration with Imagine Dragons.” A fan, who was competing on the game show, swiftly responded “Who is JID?”

In a recent interview with People, JID revealed exactly how he felt after finding out about being referenced on the iconic game show.

“It feels like a big win,” he said. “Everybody lost their mind. My parents saw it. I know all of their friends were geeking out about it. So it was just something I was like, ‘Oh, this is something I couldn’t even put on a bucket list.’ This is something I never expected to happen. Because I know the universe is aligning for certain things for me.”

Also in the interview, he said that he connected with the fan who answered the prompt correctly, and that he invited him to attend a concert of his.

“Oh, we found him already,” JID said. “He’s coming to the show.”

Earl Sweatshirt Was Confused For Another Rapper Named After Clothing On ‘Jeopardy!’

At some point in the last five or so years, someone on the Jeopardy! staff figured out that having answers and clues based on hip-hop is really amusing to the show’s audience. And so, there have been references to Public Enemy (and the Funky Bunch), ASAP Rocky, Lil Jon, Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar, and Megan Thee Stallion in recent contests, and invariably, the results have been entertaining — whether contestants’ answers are accurate or not.

The latest rapper to get the Jeopardy! treatment is Earl Sweatshirt. The Los Angeles-based former member of Odd Future appeared as the $800 clue in the “Rappers” category (they have a whole category!) last night. Now, it’s possible — even likely! — that our flustered contestant knew the correct answer. After all, the rapper whose name she blurted out is also named after a garment — damn near the same garment, in fact.

What that says about the state of rap names, in general, is probably a question for another day, but as far as linguistic replacements go, you could do worse than “A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.” The viewers’ frustration at the faux pas may appear to belie that assertion, though. She also mispronounced the “A” in “A Boogie” but considering everybody has to read everything online and just figure it out, this is something we are all going to have to get used to.

The fact remains that Earl and Artist look almost nothing alike (for what it’s worth, there are so many photos of A Boogie wearing so many other items that are not hoodies, maybe a name change is in order). Nor does their music sound alike, although that didn’t come up on Jeopardy!. In the end, none of the contestants could guess and host Mayim Bialik had to give the answer. On the bright side, maybe it worked out for Earl and A Boogie’s streaming numbers when viewers inevitably googled both to figure out what the big deal was. Check out more fans’ reactions below.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Earl Sweatshirt are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
