Retired NBA player Jalen Rose is one of the twenty on-air personalities laid off from ESPN. Reports are saying that the whopping layoffs blindsided many and  they are unrelated to the multi-round Disney layoffs implemented in recent months.

Deadline reports:

ESPN is letting go of about 20 on-air personalities, including two familiar names to NBA viewers: game analyst Jeff Van Gundy and studio co-host Jalen Rose.

Keyshawn Johnson, a former NFL player who had co-hosted ESPN Radio’s national morning show in one of many chapters in a 16-year run on ESPN, is also among those leaving. Also out is Max Kellerman, Johnson’s radio co-host as well as host of This Just In and formerly Stephen A. Smith’s longtime sparring partner on daily morning TV staple First Take.

A person familiar with the cutbacks told Deadline they are unrelated to the multi-round Disney layoffs implemented in recent months. Those reductions saw a number of senior-level execs leave ESPN but spared on-air talent. The source indicated that many of those affected by the new cuts have contracts beyond June 30 and will paid out accordingly, but parting ways will enable ESPN to avoid wider layoffs. The sports operation is now its own division of Disney, making its financials more visible.

Jalen Rose Shares Thoughts On Phil Jackson’s Comments: Video

Jalen Rose didn’t hold back his feelings on what Phil Jackson had to say over the weekend. Jackson was asked about the current NBA product but claimed he doesn’t watch the game. The NBA head coaching legend stated that he hasn’t watched the game since 2020. “They even had slogans on the floor and the baseline. It was trying… to bring a certain audience to the game, and they didn’t know it was turning other people off. People want to see sports as non-political.”

Obviously, those statements were sure to incite a powerful response. As Rose is coming to the forefront of defending the league in a recent tweet. In the video tweeted by Rose, the former NBA star asked Jackson what is so political about social justice. Rose went on to remind Jackson that his coaching success in the NBA came off of the back of great black athletes. Jalen Rose Credits Tony Yayo For “You Can’t See Me” Gesture

Jalen Rose is asking fans to give Tony Yayo his flowers. The request follows the explosive women’s college basketball national championship game between LSU and Iowa. In the final seconds of the game, LSU player Angel Reese made the “You can’t see me” gesture towards Iowa star Caitlin Clark. Clark herself performed the gesture earlier in the tournament during a game against Louisville. Since the game, many people on social media have incorrectly credited actor and wrestler John Cena with creating the gesture. However, Rose points out that it was actually created by Tony Yayo.

HipHopWolf shared a video of Rose defending Yayo earlier this week. Yayo first made the gesture in the video for his 2005 song, “So seductive.” John Cena openly admits to being a fan of both Yayo and the video. Cena liked the gesture so much that he began using it early on his career with WWE. Rose urged those crediting Cena with creating the gesture to learn their history. “All I know is this, If you think John Cena made that up, you clearly know nothing about our culture or Hip Hop,” Rose said. “Please give Tony Yayo his flowers.”

Ja Morant has been going through quite a bit as of late. Following an Instagram Live in which he flashed a gun, Morant was suspended from the league. Subsequently, he checked himself into a counseling program where he sought help for his behavior. Overall, it was a sad story to bear witness to as Ja has so much potential. You never want to see a young player go down this path, and Ja realized his actions were detrimental to himself and those around him.

Yesterday, it was revealed by Adam Silver that Morant would be retroactively suspended for eight games without pay. Moreover, he could return to the league on March 20th. In the midst of this, he sat down with Jalen Rose, where he cleared up some facts about the situation. For instance, he revealed whether or not the gun belonged to him. “The gun wasn’t mine. It’s not who I am,” Morant said. “I don’t condone any type of violence, but I’ve taken responsibility for my actions. But in the future, I’m going to show everybody who Ja really is, what I’m about, and change this narrative that everybody got.”

Earlier today (March 15), the news of Ja Morant’s suspension set the sports world ablaze. It has been an intense time for the Memphis Grizzlies star, who at 23 years old has mapped out a lengthy, successful career in the NBA. However, he’s hit a few missteps, and in recent weeks, Morant’s goals seem to be unraveling in real time. Retired ballers like Stephen Jackson have vocalized support for Morant, telling him he made a mistake and could move forward. Others have questioned why it seemed that Morant was trying to appear tougher than he is, advising him to leave the street life behind. Now, the basketball star is speaking out in his first interview since his scandals began.

First, there was news that Morant was involved in a scuffle during a pick-up game. He’s accused of assaulting a 17-year-old basketball player during a confrontation and displaying a gun. He soon denied the allegations. Jalen Rose reacted to Ja Morant’s recent Instagram Live post, in which he brandished a gun, on ABC’s pregame show on Saturday night before the Milwaukee Bucks took on the Philadelphia 76ers. Rose compared himself to the young Memphis Grizzlies star, explaining that he has experience with guns as well. The former NBA star said that he believes Morant will figure it out.

“I am Ja Morant,” Rose said after hearing from Stephen A. Smith and Michael Wilbon. “You guys got a chance to see me grow up for public consumption since 1991. I’ve been involved in drug raids, I’ve survived assassination attempts. I’ve been that undisciplined young person that was trying to figure out how to be famous, how to be successful, how to change the dynamics of my family.”

“He has way too much to lose,” Rose said. “Trust me, I’ve been that young player carrying a gun, and Wilbon alluded to this: When you start waving it, that can get you killed. That’s an entirely different thing than we’re talking about a superstar athlete should be putting themself in position. And as Stephen A mentioned, that’s him on the video, on his IG Live. Ain’t nobody coaxing him, ain’t nobody egging him on to do that, that’s a personal choice.”

Rose went on to call fame a drug and praised Morant for owning up to his mistakes. Morant released a statement on Saturday apologizing for the live stream. Jalen Rose was famous for his NBA career, although there is no doubt that he was famous in college as well. Rose was part of the “Fab 5” over at Michigan. Overall, they were an amazing basketball team that is still heralded to this day. As a direct result of his time in college, Rose is quite fond of college hopes. Consequently, he gets to sound off on the college game while covering basketball for ESPN. In just a month from now, he will get to give his takes on March Madness. For now, however, he is giving his opinion on a young hooper set to take the college world by storm, next season.

Of course, we are talking about none other than Bronny James Jr. Bronny just finished up his final season at Sierra Canyon. Subsequently, he will have to decide where he is going to go to school. There are plenty of schools that want him, including Ohio State, USC, and even Oregon. Moreover, he is being given NBA cache as ESPN just put him in the Top 10 of their 2024 NBA mock draft.

If you have ever watched Jalen Rose on TV, you know that he always has an amazing haircut. His hairline has been praised for years, and it feels as though he is getting a new haircut every single day. Overall, Rose has been very forthcoming about his hair regimens. He is someone who always has his barber on call, and he is always ready to shell out a few bucks to keep his hair looking crisp. Although, it makes sense that he would do this when you consider he is on television for ESPN pretty well every single day.

For many, going to the barber can be an anxiety-inducing experience. For instance, there is an expectation that you will have to engage in small talk.
