Jamal Murray Sends Lakers to Cancun with Second Game Winner of the Series

In a thrilling display of determination and skill, Jamal Murray led the Denver Nuggets to a series-clinching victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite battling a calf strain, Murray’s resilience shone through as he sank his second game-winning shot of the series with just 3.6 seconds remaining, securing a 108-106 win in Game 5.

Murray’s performance etched his name in NBA history as the only player in the play-by-play era to make two game-winning field goals in the final five seconds of a playoff series. With 32 points, seven assists, and five 3-pointers in 41 minutes, Murray delivered when it mattered most.

“I didn’t want to sit,” Murray said. “The training staff, they’re really cautious with it, they don’t want it to get worse. I was like ‘I’m not gonna leave my brothers out there.’ I got a little emotional in the back. I was like ‘I’m not sitting.’”

Nuggets Coach Michael Malone added, “He just told me, ‘I’m glad I played because I don’t know if we win if I don’t play tonight.’ I said, ‘Well, that’s the understatement of the year.”

You can watch the final five minutes of the game below.

Supported by standout performances from Michael Porter Jr. and Nikola Jokic, who combined for 51 points, Murray showcased his leadership and clutch ability on the court. Jokic’s dominant 25-point, 20-rebound, and 9-assist performance marked his second 25/20/5 game of the series.

The Nuggets ‘ resilience and tenacity prevailed despite the Lakers’ formidable efforts, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Lakers’ halftime leads in each game were nullified by Denver’s strong finishes, exemplified by a decisive 21-10 run in the third quarter of Game 5.

With their sights set on the Conference Semifinals, the Nuggets prepare to face the Minnesota Timberwolves. Game 1 promises to be an electrifying showdown on Saturday in Denver as Murray and the Nuggets look to build on their momentum and continue their quest for NBA glory.

Murray's Buzzer Beater Seals Nuggets' Game 2 Victory Over Lakers

Jamal Murray delivered a jaw-dropping performance, capping off the Denver Nuggets’ thrilling comeback against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 with a sensational game-winning shot. Murray’s 15-foot fadeaway jumper over Anthony Davis’ outstretched arm, dubbed the Tissot Buzzer Beater, sealed the Nuggets’ 104-101 triumph.

Murray erupted for 14 points in the final 9:19 of the game, finishing with 20 points. His heroics were complemented by Nikola Jokic’s monstrous triple-double of 27 points, 20 rebounds, and ten assists. Michael Porter Jr. also contributed significantly with 22 points and nine boards.

“That’s Jamal Murray right there,” said Nuggets Coach Michael Malone. “He can struggle, he can struggle, he can struggle. He sees one go in and he’s never shying away from the moment, the spotlight.”

Jokic’s performance marked a historic milestone, as he tied Wilt Chamberlain for the most games with 20+ points, 20+ rebounds, and 10+ assists in playoff history, achieving his fourth in just 70 career playoff games.

Despite the Lakers’ efforts, led by Anthony Davis’ 32 points and 11 rebounds and LeBron James’ near-triple-double of 26 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds, they fell short in the face of the Nuggets’ relentless onslaught.

Meanwhile, in another electrifying matchup, the New York Knicks stunned the Philadelphia 76ers with a late rally in Game 2, securing a 104-101 victory at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks’ trio of Brunson, Hart, and DiVincenzo combined for an impressive 64 points, overshadowing Joel Embiid’s historic performance of 34 points and ten rebounds. This marked his 15th playoff game with 30+ points and 10+ rebounds, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain for the most in Sixers history.

3.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the ball was inbounded to Nikola Jokic at three-quarters court. He dribbled to the Chase Center logo near the Warriors bench, lifted over Kevon Looney and gamed the Golden State Warriors.

The Denver Nuggets outlasted Stephen Curry and the Warriors in a Thursday night on TNT thriller 130-127. Jokic dropped 34 points on 13-of-15 shooting, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Additionally, Aaron Gordon had 30 points and Jamal Murray added 25.

“That was the last option with that play,” Jokic said. “I just took a shot. I think those shots are the easiest shots to take. You don’t have any other options. So actually, when I felt it, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m going to bank this.’ You can see the flight of the ball, and I just knew I was going to bank it.”

On the other end of the court, Curry dropped 30 and Klay Thompson added 24.

The Denver Nuggets will be shorthanded for a while after their power forward Aaron Gordon will miss time due to wounds from a dog attack.

According to ESPN, Gordon was bitten on the face and right shooting hand by his family’s dog. Gordon is listed as in “good condition” but will not be with the team, and there is no current timetable for his return.

“Obviously, a very traumatic experience and the most important thing I told him is that you take as much time as you need,” said Nuggets coach Michael Malone. “We’re a family — wins, losses, and when people go through tough times like Aaron’s going through right now.”

“He just uplifts everybody that comes in when he’s around them,” teammate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope said. “We’ve got to do the same for him.”

For the season, Gordon has averaged 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Top 10 Sports Moments Of 2023

Another year of sport has come and gone. Champions were crowned, memes were created, and moments were etched into the annals of history. As the year winds down, HotNewHipHop is looking back at the moments that truly defined sport in 2023.

10. Tom Brady Retires…Again

Tom Brady

On January 16, at a little after 10pm Eastern, Tom Brady completed a 12-yard pass to Julio Jones. It turned a 3rd & 18 to a 4th & 6, which the Buccaneers failed to convert. Tampa turned over the ball and the Cowboys ran out the clock to seal a 31-14 win. That pass to Jones would turn out to be Brady’s last in the NFL. 16 days later, on February 1, Brady announced that he was retiring “for good”. People were skeptical, given that Brady had retired and then unretired the year before. However, it looks like this one is going to stick. That ended the historic career of a quarterback whose achievements will likely never be matched.

9. Spain Wins The Women’s World Cup

For the first time in 12 years, a team other than the United States won the Women’s World Cup. Spain, at just their third World Cup, powered their way to a maiden title and Europe’s first since 2007. This happened in conjunction with a monumental collapse from the USWNT, who failed to make the semifinals for the first time in the competition’s history. But even more notable is what happened in the weeks after the competition concluded. A feminist reckoning swept Spain as the World Cup-winning players stood up to the predatory behavior of their national federation president.

8. Texas Rangers Capture First World Series

2023 truly was a year of firsts, as the Texas Rangers captured their first World Series title with a 4-1 series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. However, what’s more amazing about this title is that the Rangers were by no means a preseason favorite. They entered the season with +4500 odds to win the Fall Classic. However, a bevy of career years from its superstar roster powered the team to a 90-win campaign, even if they lost the division title on the final day of the season. Notably, the Rangers were unstoppable away from Arlington, going 11-0 on the road during the playoffs.

7. Vegas Golden Knights Claim Maiden Stanley Cup

The NHL also had its own first-time champion as the Vegas Golden Knights avenged their loss in the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals to finally capture the title for themselves. Standing in their way was the ultimate Cinderella story in the Florida Panthers, who had somehow navigated a stacked Eastern Conference bracket. However, the Panthers were no match for the Knights, who brought yet another title to the ever-growing trophy cabinet of Las Vegas.

6. Terence Crawford & Errol Spence Jr Unify The Belts

Terence Crawford

There were so many boxing matches that were hyped as “Fight of the Year” this year. However, few matched the hype of Terance Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr in Las Vegas. The winner would unify the welterweight title and maintain their undefeated record. While the fight didn’t quite match the hype, it still brought Crawford, briefly, to the pinnacle of his weight division. A rematch is expected next year between the two. Furthermore, Drake also won big, walking away with $20 million after betting on Crawford.

5. LeBron James Becomes The NBA’s All-Time Scorer

(Photo by Keith Birmingham/MediaNews Group/Pasadena Star-News via Getty Images)

On February 8, LeBron James scored the 38,388th point of his career. The 21-foot turnaround jumper moved LeBron past Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leader scorer. Kareem’s record had stood since 1989, five years after Kareem himself had surpassed Wilt Chamberlain. It all but cemented LeBron’s status as the GOAT, but it didn’t end there. On November 21, LeBron became the first player in league history to surpass 39,000 points with a 17-point night against the Jazz. With LeBron eager to play a few more years at least, it still remains to be seen where the new benchmark will finally be set.

4. Georgia Routs TCU For National Championship Repeat

Everyone expected the Georgia Bulldogs to reach the FBS National Championship. TCU not so much. After going 5-7 in 2021, TCU exploded onto the national scene, going undefeated until the Big 12 Championship Game, where they lost to Kansas State. However, they still progressed to the College Football Playoffs, where they stunned Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl. Despite this, a full Cinderella run wasn’t to be as Georgia steamrolled the Horned Frogs 63-7. Regardless of the final result, TCU’s 2022 season will go down in history.

In the waning minutes of LSU’s blowout win over Iowa in the NCAA women’s basketball national championship, Angel Reese finally found her spotlight. She had delighted basketball fans all season as one of the nation’s best scorers and rebounders. However, her actions at the end of the National Championship finally made her a household name. It all started as Reese hit National Player of the Year Caitlin Clark with Tony Yayo’s iconic “You Can’t See Me” move. Once the confetti settled, Reese remained in the spotlight, beefing with the first family over perceived disrespect.

2. Chiefs Top Eagles

Kansas City Chiefs

The 2023 Super Bowl matched the dynasty-building Chiefs against the upstart Eagles. It was truly a clash of the best teams in the league and one that fans that salivating for. What fans got was a game of two halves. The Eagles raced out to an early lead, leading 24-14 at halftime. However, the Eagles would score just 11 points in the second half as the Chiefs took control and powered their way to a 38-35 win and their second Super Bowl victory in the last four years. It feels like the teams are on a collision course again this year, even if the Eagles already got revenge in their regular-season matchup.

Nuggets, Mavericks, And Lakers All Pursuing Bruce Brown

Bruce Brown had a career year during the 2022-23 season. He appeared in 80 games and broke double-digits in points per game for the first time since being drafted in 2018. Furthermore, he was a key piece off the bench for the Nuggets during the playoffs, as they cruised to the NBA title. Brown had 11.5 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists during the regular season. The Nuggets represent the third team of Brown’s career. He was drafted by the Pistons, spent time in Brooklyn in the 2021-22 season before finding his way to Denver.

However, financial constraints in Denver meant that they were unable to pursue an extension with Brown before free agency, which begins on June 30. Meanwhile, Brown’s 2022-23 numbers have started to attract a number of big-name suitors once the signing period officially begins. As things stand, three teams are currently in the race for Brown.
