Ja Morant Posts Up In The Gym Ahead Of NBA Season

Ja Morant has been spotted working out in the gym as the start of the NBA season draws closer. Morant will miss the first 25 games of the 2023-24 season as he serves as suspension for his second offense of flashing a gun on Instagram Live. It’s the second piece of offseason footage we have of Morant. In late August, an Instagram user posted clips of Morant working out with David Roddy and GG Jackson.

Morant is expected to return on December 23, the first in a four-game Christmas road trip for the Grizzlies. However, the 2022/23 two-seed will have to find a way to stay competitive without their star player for the first almost-third of the season. With the Western Conference becoming increasingly stack during the offseason, it’s hard to say where the Grizzlies will be when Morant returns to the team.

However, Morant’s legal troubles might just be beginning. In July 2022, Morant reportedly got into an altercation with Joshua Holloway, who was 17 at the time. Holloway had been attending a pick-up game at Morant’s home in Tennessee. There, he claims he was assaulted by Morant and Morant’s friend Davonte Pack. An initial investigation was opened and quickly closed, with no charges filed. However, a Washington Post report, released alongside a civil suit filed by Holloway, revealed a lot of questionable details in the original investigation. Morant is now embroiled in that suit, which alleges assault, reckless endangerment, abuse or neglect, and infliction of emotional distress. However, Morant has filed a countersuit for slander, battery, and assault.

Per court filings from July, Morant’s team is arguing that Morant has immunity under Tennessee’s Stand Your Ground law. This allows an individual to act with force in self-defense if threatened on their own property. This stems from the claim that Morant only hit Holloway after Holloway struck Morant in the chin with a basketball. While Morant’s team has claimed that this was deliberate, Holloway’s team has argued that the then-teenager was simply performing a “ready check”. However, it is important to clarify that Morant’s team does not deny that Morant did indeed hit Holloway. Instead, it’s the circumstances and reasons for the assault that they dispute. The judge has set a hearing date of October 12 to hear the motion.

Memphis Grizzlies Refuse To Comply With Seton Hall Subpoena

The Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly defied a subpoena from Seton Hall University as the college fights a lawsuit filed by a former player. Myles Powell, who played for Seton Hall between 2016 and 2020, is currently suing the college for medical negligence. According to Powell, the school forced him to play through a torn meniscus in his senior year. This, according to the lawsuit, caused Powell to go undrafted in the 2020 draft, despite Powell alleging that he was previously viewed as a lottery pick prospect.

Powell averaged 17.5 points per game in his college career, including 21 points per game in his senior year. After going undrafted, Powell spent a year with the Knicks’ G League affiliate before playing 11 games for the Sixers on a two-way contract during the 2021-22 season. Powell currently plays for the Filipino Bay Area Dragons in the East Asia Super League. However, Powell did take part in 2023 Summer League with the Houston Rockets. As part of this lawsuit, Seton Hall has requested scouting documents on Powell from all NBA teams. However, one team, in particular, is holding out.

The Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly refused to comply with Seton Hall’s subpoena. Furthermore, the Grizzlies have even gone as far as to attempt to get the subpoena quashed. “There exists no good reason to draw Memphis Basketball into a dispute between Seton Hall and a former NCAA basketball player that involves secret text messages, under-the-table pain narcotic administration, and failure to properly diagnose an injury,” a statement from the team read.

“Like any professional sports team, the analysis of a potential player, and how said player fits into a long-term planning (or short-term acquisition) goal, is highly confidential. Indeed, the format in which Memphis Basketball compiles scouting reports and/or rates players, is competitively sensitive information,” their filing in federal court added. Additionally, this is the second lawsuit that Powell has attempted. In 2022, a judge dismissed all 12 of his claims. However, he did so without prejudice, meaning that Powell could amend and refile his claims.

Kristaps Porziņģis Trade Saved By Memphis Grizzlies

On June 22, it was revealed that the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards were working on a deal to send center Kristaps Porziņģis to Boston. It was the second major trade of the offseason, and also the second featuring the Wizards. On June 18, they sent Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, and a package of picks. Porziņģis has been a key contributor for the Wizards. Joining the team via a trade in 2022, Porziņģis had a career-high 23.2 points per game. Furthermore, he had a career-high shooting percentage of 49.8%. Acquiring Porziņģis would earn the Celtics a definite upgrade at center. Porziņģis is a decade younger than current standing center Al Horford and had a much stronger 2022-23 season.

The Porziņģis trade was meant to be a three-team deal also featuring the LA Clippers. The Wizards would receive Marcus Morris, Amir Coffey, the 30th pick in the 2023 Draft from the Clippers, and Danilo Gallinari from Boston. Meanwhile, Boston would receive Kristaps Porziņģis. Finally, the Clippers would get Malcolm Brogdon from the Celtics. However, around 90 minutes after the news was broken, the deal had reportedly fallen apart. With the Clippers pulling out, the Wizards and Celtics were left scrambling to complete the deal before the deadline on Porziņģis’ player option passed.

Grizzlies Join Porziņģis Deal

Per ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Porziņģis deal was saved by the intervention of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies, who have been linked with trades elsewhere, took the place of the Clippers in the deal. The Celtics receive Porziņģis, Memphis’ 2023 first-round draft pick, and Golden State’s 2024 top-four protected first-round draft pick. Meanwhile, Washington receives Tyus Jones from the Grizzlies, and Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala, and a 2023 second-round pick from Boston. Finally, Memphis receives Marcus Smart from the Celtics.

It’s a complicated trade with a lot of moving parts. However, Boston gets a new franchise center and two first-round picks to play with. The Grizzlies get a workhorse veteran who could also help with their locker room atmosphere. Furthermore, the Wizards get a collection of veteran talent as they look to retool their roster and start their rebuild. Who do you think won this trade? Let us know in the comments.
