Jada Pinkett Smith Admits the Quarantine is Testing her Marriage

Jada Pinkett Smith has further pulled the curtain on her relationship with Will Smith. In a clip from a forthcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith stated she and Will Smith live “completely separate lives” and have since 2016.

The appearance is in promotion of her new memoir Worthy, which drops on Oct. 17. Pinkett Smith confirms that the two are still together legally but romantically have divorced.

Why haven’t they made it official legally? Because there is more work to be done.

“Just not being ready yet,” Pinkett Smith said. “Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership … In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.”

Pinkett Smith stated the relationship became strained by them both being “stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.

“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever,” Pinkett Smith says. “I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

Jada Pinkett Smith is the cover star of the new edition of PEOPLE, and during the conversation, she reveals that she thought the Oscars slap was a skit.

“I thought, ‘This is a skit,’” Pinkett Smith said. “I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him. It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”

She stated after the show, the first thing she said to the Oscar-winning actor was “Are you okay?” Adding, “I’m going to be by his side but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”

The conversation circled her forthcoming book, Worthy, which will release on Oct. 17.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith were reportedly separated years before the infamous Oscars incident went down. Ahead of the release of her forthcoming memoir, Worthy, she sat down for a tell-all interview with PEOPLE where she dived into everything including her marriage to Will and the controversial award show moment. Apparently, the two are not “romantically together,” though they aren’t formally divorced on paper.

“We’re still figuring it out,” she told PEOPLE. “We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.” As far as the Oscars moment, she said that she thought it was a skit. Still, she said that she’s going to continue to stand by Will Smith no matter what. “I’m going to be by his side,” she said of him. “But also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”

Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Separate

In a clip from her upcoming NBC Primetime special with Hoda Kotb, she revealed that she and Will live “completely separate lives” and have been since 2016. Hoda said that she was surprised by the revelation from the book where Jada goes into detail surrounding her relationship with Will. Jada confirmed that they aren’t together romantically, although Kotb clarified that “it was not a divorce on paper.” However, Jada emphasized that she considered it a “divorce.”

“By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be,” she told Kotb on why she thinks their relationship was “fractured.” “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. Jada Pinkett Smith reveals that she suffers from “bouts of depression” in her new book, Worthy. PEOPLE published an excerpt from the upcoming memoir, last week. In the section, Jada explains that despite her successful career and marriage, she finds herself dealing with moments where “helplessness” floods in.

In doing so, she recalls battling with a mental break around her 40th birthday. “I want to be grateful for this moment, for this opportunity, but a feeling of helplessness floods me…” she writes. “Don’t be afraid, I tell myself. You are in peaceful, beautiful Ojai. Why are you so scared? Because, I answer right back, what if THIS actually kills me?”

From there, she continues: “Three months earlier, in the wake of my fortieth birthday, my biggest worry was Well, what if it DOESN’T? For two decades, I had been putting on a good face, going with the flow, telling everyone I was okay. Yet underneath, bouts of depression and overwhelming hopelessness had smoldered until they turned into raging hellfire in my broken heart. Unwelcome feelings — of not deserving love — made it harder to understand the disconnect between the so-called perfect life I had achieved and the well of loss I carried with me. Therapy helped up to a point. It got me to forty! But to what end?”

Elsewhere, she describes “checking off boxes” to prove she lives a happy life and how those “boxes” haven’t supplied her with the joy she expected. “I followed the rules … the rules we’re told to follow. Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, the sister of rapper 2Pac, released a statement in the hours after the arrest of Duane “Keefe D” Davis in connection with her brother’s murder. “This is no doubt a pivotal moment. The silence of the past 27 years surrounding this case has spoken loudly in our community. It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son. His life and death matters, and should not go unsolved or unrecognized. So yes, today is a victory but I will reserve judgement until all the facts and legal proceedings are complete. There have been multiple hands involved and there remains so much surrounding the life and death of my brother Tupac and our Shakur family overall. We are seeking real justice, on all fronts,” Shakur said.

Meanwhile, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith also made a statement on her Instagram page. “Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. R.I.P. Pac.” Pinkett-Smith and Shakur were reportedly close in high school. Furthermore, Pinkett-Smith has previously said in interviews that one of her biggest regrets in life is not telling Shakur that she loved him.

Keefe D, who has spoken of his involvement in 2Pac’s death for many years, was arrested on September 29 by the Las Vegas Police Department. Davis is accused of ordering 2Pac’s murder. “Duane Davis was the shot caller for this group of individuals that committed this crime and he orchestrated the plan that was carried out,” Las Vegas police homicide Lt. Jason Johansson told reporters. In his own memoir, Davis claims to have provided the gun that killed Tupac. Additionally, he has stated on numerous occasions that the man who pulled the trigger was his nephew, Orlando Anderson. However, Anderson died in an unrelated gang shooting in 1998.

Davis has been charged with one count of murder with a deadly weapon. He is due to appear in court early next week and refused to speak with the media after his arrest. Furthermore, Davis has been the primary focus of the investigation for several months. Additionally, the arrest comes after efforts to resolve the case were renewed earlier this year. Given his willingness to publicly speak about the case, few are surprised that Davis was arrested and charged with murder.
