Heems Pays Tribute To His Mother “VEENA” On Second LP Of 2024

Heems has just laid out a truly personal collection of tracks onto his newest album, VEENA. For those who don’t know, the project pays homage to his mother of the same name. In fact, she even as some spoken word bits on the record, including on the opening title track. She labels Heems the “poet of Queens”. That’s a very accurate description of her son, given how often his bars leave listeners with a lot to chew on, theoretically speaking. Besides showing love to the woman who brought him into this world, there’s a whole lot of other important and equally harrowing topics at hand.

“MANTO”, one of the four singles to VEENA, hears Heems talk openly about addiction, depression, and more. “I ask my dad why my grandma’s so quiet / I ask my mom why my grandma’s not smiling / I ask my therapist why I’m always wilding“. However, through all of this, you can tell that he’s got some hope for himself on songs like “RATATOUILLE”. “Life is beautiful I’m looking at flowers / I’m feeling like I got superpowers“. All in all, it’s a deep and intense listen, and definitely one of the best underground releases of 2024. This is also Heems’ second LP of the year, as it follows LAFANDAR, which ended a nine-year drought.

Travis Scott Revives His Classics On Our New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update

Our Fire Emoji playlist is back with the best of the best hip-hop drops of the week, although it’s a bit of an odd and unique one. Rather than having a fresh release be the headliner, the hip-hop world instead rallied around celebrating a ten-year-old fan-favorite. Travis Scott finally released DAYS BEFORE RODEO on streaming services, letting DSP users enjoy “Skyfall,” “Drugs You Should Try It,” and other classic tracks of his in their full-ish glory. Some tracks have been altered due to sample clearances or other considerations, but for the most part, it’s the DBR you know and love.

Another reason as to why our new Fire Emoji update is a bit weirder this time around is because one of the other highlights of the week isn’t on Spotify anymore. Benny The Butcher dropped the Buffalo Butch. Vol. 1 EP with some skilled MCs, including the long-awaited Drake collab “Buffalo Freestyle.” But for unknown reasons at press time (most likely a UMG copyright strike), you won’t be able to listen to it on the platform, although you can still find it on sites like Twitter.

HNHH Fire Emoji Playlist: Stream

Elsewhere, Cash Cobain also came through with his new album PLAY CASH COBAIN, a woozy, entrancing, and admittedly horny listen. Jokes aside, there are still a lot of engaging and enveloping highlights on this LP that are worth your attention, including “act like” and “slizzyhunchodon” with Don Toliver and Quavo. In addition, Fire Emoji highlights the excellent “BOOM BAP” from Doechii, and its soulful sampling and fiery delivery is captivating. On more of a contemporary slant, Tee Grizzley and 42 Dugg rep their city with a lot of energy on their new collaboration, “Detroit.”

Also, we wanted to shout out Central Cee’s two-pack this week, including “Bolide Noir” with JRK 19 and “Billion Streams Freestyle.” Finally, Babyface Ray and Bossman Dlow rip through an atmospheric and eerie instrumental on “Count Money.” Let us know what your favorite Fire Emoji inclusion was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Check the playlist out above and, as always, come back to HNHH for the latest killer rap drops around the clock.

YG Fires Back Amid Compton Peace Walk Criticism

Earlier this week, YG led a peace walk in his hometown of Compton, joined by several rival gang members. Treetop Pirus and Fruit Town Pirus members, who’ve been at odds for years, were both in attendance. This was the rapper’s attempt to promote peace and unity in his community.

“We came together. My hood and the Fruit Town Pirus across the street, we’ve been at war for, like, the last 10 years. We just enemies. So I felt like we all needed to come together and walk down our main street,” he told TMZ of the event. “We all from Piru so we don’t really need to be beefing with each other. We’ve been doing that sh*t for years so it’s time to like… if we can clean it, clean it up. There’s been a lot of conversations about that sh*t so I put some energy towards it and we got it right… It’s successful. All love and positive. We outside.”

YG Compares Himself To MLK

Clearly, YG was trying to do something positive here, but unfortunately, not everyone saw it that way. Amid backlash from some social media users, who think his efforts were unproductive, he took to X to respond. “I did sum positive Martin Luther king sh*tt for the gangland & people still got sum negative to say,” he wrote.

YG isn’t the only artist who’s received backlash for attempting to promote peace recently, however. In June, Kendrick Lamar united LA gangs at his Pop Out show at the Forum. Critics, such as Wack 100, went on to argue that he simply did this for optics and that no real work was accomplished. What do you think of YG receiving backlash for leading a peace walk in Compton? What about his response? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Juvenile Claims His Higher Album Sales Give Him “Best Rapper” Title Over Jay-Z & Nas

The conversation around who is the best rapper of all time has lasted in hip-hop culture ever since the 1980s, and it will continue to define the community’s values and philosophies. Of course, there are many different metrics to consider: lyrics, sales, hits, impact, influence, innovation, or a holistic combination of all those things. But according to Juvenile, the massive sales behind his classic 1998 album 400 Degreez puts him above rap legends like Jay-Z and Nas (for the record, the Cash Money MC’s pick for the best rapper is Lil Wayne). He made these comments during a recent interview, specifically speaking on how people broadly compare Southern rap to more lyrically minded East Coast counterparts such as Hov and Esco and undervalue it as a result.

A hit is a hit,” Juveline’s remarks began. “You don’t have to be the best rapper. Some of the best rappers… can’t make a hit. That s**t don’t mean nothing. The best rapper in the world don’t mean nothing if you ain’t got no f***ing hits. N***as always talk about ‘Man, Nas, da da da, Jay-Z…’ Okay, who sold the most records? I think that’s what counts, right?

Juvenile Makes A Case For Himself As A Better Rapper Than Nas & Jay-Z

“Yeah, let’s not go off the – let’s just do numbers,” Juvenile continued. “Know what I’m saying? Yeah. Let’s see who sold the most records on each solo album. Numbers don’t lie, man. Pick your best Nas album. Pick your best Jay-Z album, right? Yeah. And I’m going to take [400 Degreez] and you tell me who sold the most on a solo album. I’m taking 400.” For what it’s worth, this project has sold over six million units as of 2021 and received a quadruple platinum certification in 2000.

Meanwhile, Nas’ best-selling album, It Was Written, has sold around 3 million units, whereas Jay-Z’s best-seller Hard Knock Life… Vol. 2 is right up there with 400 Degreez with 6 million units. So while Juvenile has a point here, the conversation definitely shifts when you talk about total sales across a discography, and when comparing one rapper’s biggest hit to another’s. There are many different metrics to consider here, and many different reasons to call someone the best rapper.

Eminem’s Daughter Hailie Confessed That She ‘Audibly Sobbed’ To Two Of Her Dad’s ‘The Death Of Slim Shady’ Tracks

Eminem is tough as nail when it comes to any rap foe that takes aim at him. However, when it comes to the “Tobey” rapper’s relationship with his daughter Hailie Jade, he is a big ole softy.

On Eminem’s latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), he displayed his vulnerable side as a father on tracks like “Somebody Save Me” featuring Jelly Roll and “Temporary.” Yesterday (August 23), Hailie Jade confessed that each track brought her to tears.

On the latest episode of her podcast, Just A Little Shady, Hailie shared her emotional response after she listened to the records.

Although she admitted that she could only watch the official music video for “Somebody Save Me,” which features home footage, due to the overwhelming feeling it brought forth, the songs are another story.

“I definitely cry every time I hear it at all,” she said. “Between [Somebody Save Me] and ‘Temporary,’… I audibly sobbed I think for both songs but especially ‘Temporary.’”

While Eminem is proudly sober now, things weren’t always that way. One “Somebody Save Me,” Eminem things back on those times. However, Hailie Jade praised her parents for protecting her from truly seeing how difficult their battle with addiction was.

“I feel like my parents did such a good job growing up where I didn’t realize how bad things were,” she said. “But, now as like, an adult in hindsight, it’s so scary to think about. And I think that’s why I get emotional so much, like just thinking that could have happened.”

Russ Doesn’t Want To Lose His Girl On “If This Is It”

Russ is keeping his pen sharp by returning with “If This Is It”. With how often he drops, it’s hard to find some new angle to talk about with this guy. However, what we can say is that he’s extremely dedicated to delivering time and time again for his fans. It’s proven through his weekly weekend releases like this one right here. This time around Russ is essentially detailing a tug-of-war type of relationship on “if This Is It”. “If this is it let me know / I don’t wanna see you go”, he begins on the chorus. Do you want me, baby, yes or no? / What’s the plan? What’s the play? / ‘Cause I can’t walk away“. Then, in his verses, he continues the painful and panicked tone and storyline.

Let me find out, she’s in Waikiki / Let me chill / She wouldn’t play me“. Later, Russ admits takes some responsibility for the situation they are now in. “You know I f***ing love you / I just don’t know what happening / I know we both struggle opening up“. This track is one of the reasons why he’s been able to succeed for such a long time. The number of tones he can go to is endless, and these relatable storytelling tracks is just one of the ones he has at his disposal. Give “If This Is It” by Russ a try with the YouTube link below.
