Producer crew Team Demo enlist the talents of NY rap vets G. Dep and Kurious for a tough new single, “Adaptive,” that’s low-key been in the works since 2012.

The story behind this track is that it began to take shape more than a decade ago when G. Dep and Kurious had met at one of Tony Touch’s Funkbox events in NYC. The two chopped it up, hit it off, and decided to collaborate on a track, which led to G. Dep sending over his verse. The problem was that this was shortly before he turned himself in for a botched robbery attempt that turned deadly in 1993, which would mark the start of an 11 year bid that was commuted in December 2023.

“I wasn’t sure about releasing it like that, when he was gone,” Kurious said about the verse. “So when he came back, we had to let it out!” This led to the emcee sharing the record with Team Demo, who linked with frequent collaborator Yogi to add a hook and flesh it out into a full song.

The result is a dope bit of hip-hop history—and a hell of a single as well. “Adaptive” is available now through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms. The track is a loosie and not affiliated with a larger body of work, but be sure to check out Team Demo’s 2023 release, It’s a Demo.

Diddy Allegations: G Dep Argues Bad Boy Mogul Deserves “Benefit Of The Doubt”

G Dep, a former Bad Boy Records artist, recently spoke about the allegations plaguing Diddy and argued he deserves the “benefit of the doubt.” Speaking with Fox 5 New York about the topic, he also pleaded with the industry veteran to help him out as he’s gotten hundreds of songs in the vault following his prison release.

“I’m like, when? When did that happen?” he asked the outlet. “We were in the studio for months on end. I don’t know where this is coming from.” From there, he called for Diddy’s help. “Got a lot of songs, bruh,” he said. “I’m looking for you so we can get, you know, some type of musical situation going.”

G Dep isn’t the first associate of Diddy’s to speak out in his defense. Stevie J recently denied all the claims against him during an interview with TMZ. “I’ve never seen my man doing anything foul like they talking about,” Stevie told the outlet. “I’ve never seen it, I’ve known him for 29 years.” The drama for Diddy began when Cassie sued him for sexual abuse and more back in November. Although they quickly settled, a number of other alleged victims came forward in the months since. Finally, Homeland Security agents raided his properties in Los Angeles and Miami as part of a sex trafficking investigation, last month. Check out G Dep’s full comments on the matter below.

G Dep Speaks On Diddy Relationship

Throughout the stretch of time, Diddy has denied all of the claims against him and isn’t facing any criminal charges. His lawyer, Aaron Dyers, labeled the raids on his properties a “gross overuse of military-level force” in a statement at the time. Be on the lookout for further updates on Diddy on HotNewHipHop.

[WATCH] G. Dep Says Technology Is Making It Hard To Adjust After Prison Life

Screenshot 2024 04 15 at 11.48.33 PM

After serving over 13 years behind bars for murder, former Bad Boy artist G. Dep admits that paying for items using his phone and pay-to-ride mopeds seen all over the city present a sort of culture shock for the 49-yer-old looking to get readjusted to society.

In his first interview since his release with Art Of Dialogue, Dep says that the biggest challenge that he’s face since his release is learning about the digital age and social media society.

Back in 2010, Dep, whose real name is Travell Coleman, confessed to a cold case homicide from 1993 after walking into an NYPD Precinct and telling them details to the murder, which earned him a second degree murder charge, which landed him behind bars.

Coleman was released on April 4 and granted a 6-month early release but doesn’t regret his decision to turn himself in.

G. Dep’s Prison Release Comes After 13 Years Behind Bars: Video

The story of G. Dep is unlike that of any other rhymer, which is exactly why we’re so curious to see what’s next for the former Bad Boy artist. As HipHopDX reports, Trevell Coleman was signed to Diddy’s label in the late ’90s. He only got to show us a small bit of his lyrical talent before he went away to prison. In late 2023 he was one of just over a dozen people who New York Governor Kathy Hochul granted clemency. At the time, Dep became eligible for parole years sooner than before, and he was finally released today (April 4).

His official Instagram page has been keeping followers up to date with the latest, from the prison gates to Coleman’s first meal as a free man. The 49-year-old’s family was happy to pick him up at Fishkill Correctional Facility in upstate NY. At the time, they emotionally greeted him with a prayer circle.

Before the clemency grant, Dep was unable to petition the parole board until the 15-year mark of his sentence for the 1993 murder of John Henkel. It wasn’t until 2010 that the “Special Delivery” artist turned himself in, but his heartfelt apology and the work he’s done to change his life behind bars helped prove that he’s worthy of a second chance at life.

Rather than reporting on constant arrests, it’s a welcome break to hear so many stories of incarcerated artists coming home. Unfortunately, B.G.’s return from prison has been cut unexpectedly short as he allegedly broke probation by working with known felons like Gucci Mane and Boosie Badazz. Would you like to see G. Dep return to the studio now that he’s a free man? Let us know in the comments, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

G. Dep Granted Clemency After 13 Years for Cold Case Killing

G. Dep

Rapper G. Dep has been granted clemency by New York Governor Kathy Hochul after serving 13 years of a 15-year-to-life sentence for a cold case killing that occurred in 1993.

In 2010, Coleman walked into a police precinct and confessed to shooting John Henkel during a robbery in East Harlem, seeking to clear his conscience. With his sentence commuted, he will now be eligible to seek parole earlier than his original 2025 date. This story delves into the details of Coleman’s case and the impact of his confession.

G. Dep Original Admission

G. Dep’s admission of the nearly two-decade-old murder shocked both the music industry and the public. As a teenager at the time of the crime, Coleman’s confession opened up a long-dormant case and shed light on the consequences of his actions. Despite his confession, the “Child Of The Ghetto” faced a challenging legal battle and ended up serving 13 years before being granted clemency.

During his time in prison, Dep made efforts to turn his life around. He earned an associate’s degree and actively participated in violence prevention and sobriety counseling programs. These efforts demonstrate his commitment to self-improvement and rehabilitation during his incarceration.

As a former artist signed to Bad Boy Records, G. Dep had a notable impact on the music industry. His hits, such as “Special Delivery” and “Let’s Get It,” gained popularity in the early 2000s and helped shape the sound of hip-hop during that era. Additionally, Coleman played a role in popularizing the Harlem shake dance, showcasing his influence beyond the music itself.

G-Dep Temporarily Released From Prison Amid 15 Years To Life Sentence

According to a previous report, G. Dep was temporarily released from prison to attend his father’s funeral. This temporary release provided a brief taste of freedom for the rapper, who had been serving his sentence for 15 years to life.

G. Dep Murder Charges: Former Bad Boy Artist Eligible For Conditional Clemency In 2024

Young Thug, Tory Lanez, and R. Kelly are among inmates spending yet another holiday season in the slammer. For at least a few of them, this certainly won’t be their last Christmas behind bars. We’re rooting for Thugger to come home once his YSL RICO trial starts again in the new year, and we’re happy to report that according to AllHipHop, another famous lyricist will be getting conditional clemency in the coming spring, making 2023 their last holiday season behind bars. Former Bad Boy artist G. Dep is the lucky recipient, after confessing to a murder that went unsolved through the 1990s in 2010.

At the time, the rapper (born Trevell Coleman) entered a New York City police station, where he spoke his truth to officers. During a 1993 robbery attempt, Dep shot and killed a man, resulting in a second-degree murder conviction. He was sentenced to 15 to life in court but still has no regrets about coming forward.

Now, Coleman will have the opportunity to stand before a parole board in the spring. Because he confessed to his crime, and expresses remorse for his action, it’s likely the former star will receive clemency. “I was at a point where I wasn’t doing anything that would’ve been fruitful in the long run because I wasn’t right,” he told AllHipHop of life before serving time. “Everything was kind of fruit of the poisonous tree. Everything that I was doing, it was alright on the surface, but it wasn’t really coming from a genuine place.”

As G. Dep prepares to readjust to a society that’s changed substantially since he entered the prison system, his former collaborator, Diddy, is facing harrowing allegations that some suspect could land him in legal trouble. After settling his lawsuit with Cassie last month, the New Yorker continues to be berated by 50 Cent and other online trolls, though Method Man is making it clear he wants no part in the Power producer’s commentary after a recent post. Read more about that at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.
