Pras Opens Up About Turning Down Plea Deal While Facing A 22-Year Federal Sentence

Screen Shot 2023 03 13 at 1.59.42 AM

Rapper Pras gave his first interview about the legal drama that led to him being investigated for money laundering and accused of being a Chinese government agent.

Rolling Stone released a feature about the ordeal where Michael Ames breaks down how the Fugees rapper became the face of a decade-long case involving two foreign nationals attempting to influence the U.S. government.

The first man, who Pras refers to as Jho Low, is a Malaysian national who robbed his country’s sovereign wealth fund (known as 1MDB) of $4.5 billion dollars.

The man, whose real name is Low Taek Jho, used the stolen money to buy his way into American social and celebrity circles with stunts like putting up $100 million to finance Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street because he was trying to become friends with Leonardo DiCaprio.

For the first few years of their friendship, Pras and Jho Low’s relationship consisted of high-profile celebrity parties. One event in 2012 saw the two transform a private 500-seater flight into a nightclub so that they could shuttle their A-List friends to Sydney, Australia to celebrate New Year’s Eve; then return to the United States to ring in 2013 a second time.

“When we exited Australia, the stamp was 2013,” Pras said, explaining the adventure. “When I came back into the States, the stamp was 2012.”

In the midst of it all, however, Jho set his sights on bribing the U.S. government like he had done with the Malaysian government and others; and saw Pras’ relationship with Barack Obama as a way in.

The first crime the rapper is accused of committing consists of him donating over $1.1 million of Jho Low’s money into Obama’s 2012 campaign, but making it seem as though the amount came from multiple donations from multiple people.

In 2019, Pras was indicted on four criminal counts for his illegal contributions. However, prosecutors offered him a plea deal that would not only see the charges go away, but would also lead to the government returning some of the $74 million that had been seized from his four bank accounts.

Maintaining that he had done nothing wrong, Pras turned down the deal. And now his attorneys are saying that he has been turned into a scapegoat for Low Taek Jho, who has since fled the country and cannot be prosecuted.

After turning down the plea deal, Pras was hit with “a superseding indictment that added eight more criminal charges, including bank fraud, concealment of material facts, witness tampering, violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), and working as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China.”

The last two charges are from Jho using Pras to try to get in good with someone within the Trump administration who could help make the investigation into his embezzlement case go away. In the process, Pras was introduced to China’s Vice Minister of Public Security Sun Lijun, who was trying to get the U.S. government to turn over a wealthy fugitive billionaire back over to Chinese authorities.

Pras took one meeting with Lijun; but the conversations they had technically made it seem as though the rapper was acting against the United States on behalf of China.

“I was one of those people who was just dabbling. I never thought I would be full time into politics,” Pras told Rolling Stone of his ordeal. “I realized politics is not for me. The problem with politics is this: It’s that the people within politics, they’re dirtier than the people who are not in politics.

“What benefit would I get trying to break laws? It’s not worth it to me,” he added after explaining that, throughout this whole ordeal he checked in with his legal council to make sure he wouldn’t be getting himself into trouble. “I’m like a pariah now. I’ve got friends who won’t talk to me because they think there’s a satellite in orbit listening to them.”

Addressing the rumors that the Fugees 2022 reunion tour was cancelled because of his legal troubles, Pras hinted that drama within the crew had much more to do with the cancellation than anything going on in his own life.

“It got a bit complicated. That’s life. But I think now we cordial,” he explained. “’Clef and I speak, here and there. He texts me, he calls me. Lauryn and I, we cool. You know, it’s all right. But obviously, dealing with what I’m dealing with, I’ve just been kind of, like, focusing on that, you know what I mean?”

All of the other people who were originally included in the federal indictment — including two Goldman Sachs bankers who confessed to helping Jho move his money around; and Frank White, Jr., the former chairman of President Obama’s reelection campaign — have agreed to testify against Pras in a trial set to start on March 27.

Screen Shot 2023 03 12 at 3.04.28 PM

On this date 29 years ago, Gusto and the gang shows us what gangsta Hip-Hop is all about.

In 1993, Chris Rock, Allen Payne and Charlie Murphy gave their own take of how things go down behind the scenes with gangsta rappers vs. real-life gangsters in the comedy flick CB4. Directed by and starring Rock, CB4 was a parody that pokes fun at “the world’s most dangerous group” N.W.A. and features several Hip Hop notables including Ice-T, Ice Cube, Flavor Flav and the late Eazy-E.

Murphy, who played the role of “Gusto”, is a certified “G’ who is “three generations deep in gangsterdom.” Rock, who plays up and coming rapper Albert Brown from “LoCash” California, jack Gusto’s gangster look, background and persona, becoming MC Gusto after the “gangsta” Gusto went to prison. The group that Rock’s character formed, who were called CB4, which stood for gangsta Gusto’s prison location ‘Cell Block 4″, took the rap world by storm until reality hit; Gusto gets out of jail.

Salute to Rock, Charlie Murphy (RIP), Allen Payne and even Daddy-O of Stetsasonic, who was the rapper for CB4’s hits “Straight Outta LoCash” and “Sweat From My Balls.” CB4 is definitely a comedic learning tool and will forever be a piece of Hip-Hop history!

[WATCH] XXXTentacion Murder Trial Winding Down As Jury Enters Deliberation

Screen Shot 2023 03 12 at 8.26.03 AM

The jury, who have been listening to witness testimonies since Feb. 7 in the murder trial of late-Florida rapper, XXXTentacion, has officially entered deliberation on March 8. Just a few hours in, the Hon. Judge Michael Usan instructed the jurors to return on March 9 at 10:30 a.m. to continue deliberations.

Spilling into two days, March 7-8, of closing arguments all sides presented arguments one last time.  Prosecutor Pascale Achille called the men, Dedrick Williams, Michael Boatwright, and Trayvon Newsom —  “predators” who attacked an unsuspecting XXX.

Achille urged the jury to return with a “guilty” conviction.

She also played cellphone videos of the defendants hours after XXX died and laid out ballistic and cell phone evidence.

“This is who they are,” Achille told the jury while playing videos of the men smiling, dancing, and flashing fistfuls of $100 bills.

“This is their real character,” she continued. “Killers that within 24 hours after shooting the victim dead and stealing $50,000 from him, this is what they do.”

“Look at how happy they look. Look at how excited they look,” she noted as she continued to play the video.

Achille also played surveillance video from the Riva Motorsports and of the men allegedly stashing the Black Dodge Journey SUV she claimed connected the men to the murder.

Boatwright’s attorney, Joseph Kimok presented the final defense closing arguments on March 8. He told jurors that while XXX struggled with his killers before getting shot to death, the DNA found on his body, along with the stolen chain, wasn’t from Boatwright.

Kimok also said the DNA wasn’t Newsome’s,  the accused second gunman or Williams who has been accused of being the getaway driver and ringleader.

“Whoever (XXXTentacion) struggled with is not in this courtroom,” Kimok told the jurors. “The DNA proves that someone not named, Michael Boatwright or Trayvon Newsome participated in this murder.”

Boatwright has been named the alleged shooter that shot the three bullets that killed XXXtentacion.

William’s attorney, Mauricio Padilla  told the jury Allen was a “liar.” Noting that the prosecution’s additional witnesses also contradicted each other. He also said the Broward County Sheriff’s department didn’t look at other possible suspects, namely rap star Drake, who was beefing with XXX at the time of his death.

[WATCH] 15-Year-Old Student Shoved By Teacher For Not Reciting Pledge of Allegiance

Screen Shot 2023 03 11 at 12.42.56 PM

The parents of a 9th grader in South Carolina are suing after their daughter was allegedly pushed by a teacher for not saying the Pledge of Allegiance while she was walking to class.

Marissa Barnwell, the student, said during a news conference on Thursday that she was walking quietly to her class at River Bluff High School in Lexington, South Carolina and decided not to stop walking to recite the pledge or a moment of silence.

A teacher at the school allegedly yelled at her, confronted her, and pushed her against a wall nearby.

“I was just in disbelief,” Barnwell said, recalling that she told the teacher “Get your hands off of me.”

Barnwell, who’s 15 years old, was sent to the principal’s office afterward, which she described as humiliating because she thought she was in trouble.

After the meeting, the principal sent Barnwell back to class, but didn’t let her know that the teacher was wrong for accosting her and pushing her into a wall for not stopping to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

“I was completely and utterly disrespected,” Barnwell said, according to The State newspaper. “No one has apologized, no one has acknowledged my hurt. … The fact that the school is defending that kind of behavior is unimaginable.”

Barnwell’s parents have filed a lawsuit against the River Bluff High School teacher, principal, Lexington School District 1, as well as the South Carolina Education Department in federal court, stating that their daughter’s First Amendment and civil rights were violated.

The South Carolina legislature passed a law over 30 years ago requiring schools in the state to play the Pledge of Allegiance at a certain time each day, but also prohibits punishment for students who refuse to recite the pledge.

Tyler Bailey, the family’s attorney, said that students should be able to exercise their constitutional rights.

“The thing that’s beautiful about America is we have freedoms,” Bailey said. “Students in our schools should feel safe, they should not be feel threatened for exercising their constitutional rights.”

The teacher and principal allegedly involved in the incident are still employed at the school, according to its website.

J. Prince Denies Reports He Was Arrested For Threatening Offset

Screen Shot 2023 03 11 at 12.09.45 PM

J. Prince is denying claims he was arrested for threatening Offset after Wack 100 allegedly told Clubhouse that the mogul had been taken into custody.

The alleged accusation about the Houston vet came from Wack on Friday (March 10). A viral audio recording from Clubhouse hears him saying “he has been arrested,” but it doesn’t capture him saying J. Prince or Offset’s name.

A headline attached to the audio did, however, writing: “Wack 100 & His Sources Say J Prince Has Been Arrested By Feds For Threatening Offset & The Remaining Migos Are In Protective Custody.”

When DJ Akademiks reposted the report, Offset commented: “Pussy wtf is this cap ass shit.”

In response, J. Prince took to Instagram from a lounge chair in a location that was quite clearly not prison and denied any such reports.

“Ah man, what has this shit come down to in the world today?” he began. “I can’t believe people play with people[‘s] intelligence — the way they play with people intelligence and intellect. You know, the way they do today, people are telling lies for a living. You know what I mean? They actually lying to y’all for a living. But as you can see, live and in living color, this is what my jail cell look like.”

‘The Woman King’ Director Still Upset Over Oscar Snub: ‘It Speaks to a Bigger Issue’

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood is still upset over The Woman King‘s Oscar snub this year.

Prince-Bythewood who directed the explosive film opened up about the movie not getting an Oscar nod despite success at the box office.

“I’ll never get over it, because what happened was egregious and … it speaks to such a bigger issue in our industry,” Prince-Bythewood told PEOPLE.

Screen Shot 2023 03 10 at 10.19.07 AM

“But [it also speaks to] who I am, the people around me, these actors,” she added, referring to the film’s stars, Viola Davis and Sheila Atim. “We will never take our foot off the gas. We’re ready to do something next. We’re ready to do something as big, we’re ready to do something together. So we always keep that energy no matter what happens.”

In February, the 53-year-old director told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve gotten so many texts and emails from people in the industry outraged by the Oscar nominations. Of course I’m disappointed. Who wouldn’t be? Especially because there was so much love for our film.”

“Not only does The Woman King exist in the world, but it’s a success in the world… So our film made money and clearly had a cultural impact, which is what we all hoped for,” she said.

“But the Academy made a very loud statement, and for me to stay quiet is to accept that statement,” she added. “So I agreed to speak up, on behalf of Black women whose work has been dismissed in the past, is dismissed now like Alice Diop and Saint Omer, Chinonye Chukwu and Till — and for those who haven’t even stepped on a set yet.”
Do you think the film deserved an Oscar nod?

Screen Shot 2023 03 10 at 9.35.42 AM

According to a report from The New York Post, federal prosecutors allege in an indictment that controversial Brooklyn Bishop Lamar Whitehead illegally fixed his bank records in order to finance his million dollar New Jersey mansion.

The feds claim that Whitehead altered his bank records to show that an LLC he controlled made an average of $2 million, when it actually had mess than $10, so that he could get approved for the mortgage. The 44-year-old created a fake bank account so that he could get tthe bank loan in 2019.

Whitehead “fabricated bank records for AMS LLC, from at least in or about October 2018 up to and including … February 2019, in an effort to obtain a mortgage in excess of $1.3 million to fund [his] purchase of a home in Paramus, New Jersey,” Manhattan federal prosecutors wrote in the indictment. The feds also claim he applied for a $250,000 business loan using the LLC, Anointing Management Services, by misrepresenting the finances of the company on that application as well.

Whitehead leads a small congregation in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn called Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries, where he preaches a “prosperity gospel” and asks his followers to “sow” — or donate money — to the church. The embattled pastor made headlines when he was robbed at gunpoint in front of his congregation for over $1 million worth of jewelry.

Whitehead faces dozens of years in prison if he’s convicted on all counts.

“We are going to be fighting those allegations,” his attorney, Dawn Florio, said Wednesday. “Lamar Whitehead will be pleading not guilty when he is arraigned on the …indictment and denies those charges.”
