ODESZA’s Creative Director, Sean Kusanagi, Details The Creative Innovations That Elevated Their Live Show

ODESZA
MERLE COOPER/UPROXX

“It takes a team” isn’t just a saying to ODESZA. As one of the biggest electronic acts in the world, Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight have built up their global following by surrounding themselves with people who not only believe in their vision but help bring it to life. In fact, the band’s creative leads are very much considered members of ODESZA themselves.

Particularly, SOUND+VISION Award honoree Sean Kusanagi. As a longtime friend of Mills and Knight dating back to their college years at Western Washington University, Kusanagi has played a pivotal role in the creation and evolution of ODESZA.

“I actually ended up introducing Harrison and Clay because I knew both of them and that they were doing separate projects,” Kusanagi says. “Clay was doing BeachesBeaches, and Harrison doing Catacombkid. I was living with Clay at the time, kind of near our senior year, and I told the guys they should really just get together and play some music.”

ODESZA
ODESZA

When he encouraged Mills and Knight to meet, Kusanagi didn’t envision that the pair would end up forming one of the most renowned touring acts in the country or that it would forever change the course of his own career. Early gigs in ODESZA’s career saw Kusanagi wearing all sorts of different hats, from touring with the band, to playing guitar on the duo’s 2012 album Summer’s Gone, to mapping lasers on the band’s Last Goodbye tour, Kusanagi evolved as a powerhouse creative force in his own right as the band ascended to stardom.

“My role is to make sure that all of the creative elements are working together,” Kusanagi says of his current role in ODESZA. “We’ve always been obsessed with cinema and movies and building cinematic-type experiences. And the show’s no different. It is like we’re telling a narrative, we’re really building a movie on stage for people to see.”

ODESZA
ODESZA

“Music drives everything and being able to work so closely with my friends Harrison and Clay and Luke [Tanaka] thinking as a whole cohesive entity is where just a lot of the magic happens,” Kusanagi continues. “Sometimes it’s a visual that sparks the audio and sometimes the audio sparks a visual or a laser moment or a pyro moment or a costuming moment or a choreography moment. My goal is to just build a world on the stage so that when people show up, they feel immersed for those 90 minutes to two hours and feel like they live inside of this ‘ODESZA world’ that can only exist right then and there.”

We asked Kusanagi what he believes to be the main innovative components that have changed ODESZA’s live shows over the past two decades.

Creative Innovation 1: Drumline & Visual Musicality

ODESZA
ODESZA

So this was one of the first elements that we really brought to life, dating back to around 2015 or 2016. ODESZA being an electronic group, they wanted to bring live orchestral and musicality to a show that is consistently made of computers and electronic elements. I think a lot of people can agree that it’s not very interesting to just watch someone behind a computer. So it probed the question of how do you bring to life all the elements of their music, which is so layered and so textural and has so many different types of worldly samples? That was really the first thing that excited us.

The first thing that we tried was adding some drumming. Harrison and Clay initially just started drumming on stage, actually bringing a drum kit up there. They brought a SPD, toms, and crash to just add some of those initial energies since that’s all they could afford at the time.

We kept wanting to make it bigger though as the shows got bigger. It’s not enough just for the two of them to drum. So we brought on a drumline to represent so many of these rhythms and styles. It was almost 10 years ago now when we partnered with the Colorado University drumline, and what’s fun is some of those members are still with us now.

We wanted to then keep building on ODESZA’s cinematic musicality. That’s where we thought to add string components as well, and we brought strings to one of ODESZA’s first Red Rocks headlining shows. That was the moment where we started realizing there are all these opportunities to build not just around these electronic moments, but around these musical and orchestral moments and make it come to life. ODESZA built on this “cinematic-ness,” which was and continues to be very future-thinking.

Creative Innovation 2: Pyrotechnics

ODESZA
ODESZA

It’s really easy to just put an explosion within a show because we have money and it’ll just make the crowd hyped. But for us, it comes back to the question, “What’s motivating it? Why are we doing it?” We want to think about why we’re doing this and why it makes sense to add any sort of creative element into the live show.

So for us, yes, pyro is a huge part of our show, but we also want to make sure that it feels motivated for how everything is working together. I’ll use “Loyal” as an example here, where we have this army of drummers on the stage and we have this king that is rising from the dead. They’re bringing this loyal king to life. And in that moment we’re like, oh, fire makes so much sense here to add on the stage just because we have this very almost war battle scene happening, both with the drum line and the visuals. The fire is helping accent that.

We use pyro to help tell the story of this ODESZA world that we’re in.

One of the challenges that comes with pyro is the many different stage formats we find ourselves in. With the drumline out, we have a lot of people onstage, sometimes 16 people, while also trying to set off pyrotechnics. We had to work a lot on the choreography or reworked stage positionings to make it work on certain stages for sure. The whole thing gets underestimated, which is why you also don’t see it that often.

We’ve incorporated pyrotechnics for the past five or so years, but it was The Last Goodbye tour where we really dove in and built time code around our pyrotechnics and our special effects like confetti. We had every second planned. Every moment is planned down to the millisecond when it’s happening and how it’s firing and how it’s being shot off in the show.

Creative Innovation 3: Visuals

ODESZA
ODESZA

The mastermind behind the visuals is my partner Luke Tanaka. He’s the lead on a lot of it, but he works with 30-40 artists from all over the world to create the visuals at ODESZA’s shows.

We get to map out the show plan, and what type of visuals for each song, and then work with these really talented artists across the globe to craft the narrative behind every show. This is really Harrison, Clay, Luke, and myself figuring out what type of style we want the visuals to be. Is it animation? Is it Cinema 4D, is it unreal? Is it after-effects?

What type of program do we want to use? What type of visual artists do we want to collaborate with?

An example is our work with Aeforia, this amazing artist up from Canada who did a lot of the album design and album cover design. He built these characters and then we started using these characters as the main representation of the Last Goodbye souls that you actually saw as inflatables up at the Gorge and are also just kind the narrative tie between everything in the show.

We really try to stay away from building your classic three-part loop for each song, which you can see the format of a lot of times, and instead get into what the actual narrative of this show is, how do all these visuals play and intersect together? And then most importantly, what type of visual wants to represent the music in a whole entirely new way so when someone shows up to the show they experience a song and it evokes something different for them and allows them to hear it in a whole new light.

Creative Innovation 4: Lasers

ODESZA
ODESZA

We’ve used lasers for a long time, but we specifically leveled them up for The Last Goodbye tour.

Specifically, the lasers that we brought into the Gorge were a very unique new thing. I think one thing that we’ve always tried to do is if we’re at a special venue [like The Gorge] we want it to feel extra special. So we wanted to see how we could use lasers in a new way.

We actually put lasers behind the crowd and shot them all the way across the Gorge, with more wattage and lasers than what has ever been at that venue before. Projecting them across the crowd and into the background created this expansive place for people. The amount we used was the first time that that’s ever been done in that capacity at that venue.

@lexi1355

ODESZA brought out allll the lasers for The Last Goodbye Finale #odesza

♬ original sound – lexi

I think that’s also the main ethos for every single one of these things. How has it been done in the past and how can we break that mold and how can we recontextualize it or rebuild it in a way that feels like it has always belonged in this set? And even if it is pushing the boundaries of the visuals or the world-building or the lasers or the pyro, the number one thing for all of it is that it works together.

If it doesn’t work together, then it all falls apart. I actually think one of the most innovative things is just building this from friends and building this as a friend group, who have been together since the very beginning and knowing that these are some of the biggest shows. I never thought that I would be in this position of creative directing before Beyonce at Coachella, but to be able to look over and see myself doing this with my friends while sharing a stage with Beyonce or Eminem, and do three nights sold out at the Gorge, that’s everyone’s dream.

Our Favorite Images From Our ECHOES Installation With ODESZA At The Gorge

It has been just a couple of days since ODESZA bid their final goodbye to fans. Truth be told, we’re still not over it.

To properly close out their The Last Goodbye tour – which saw the prolific electronic duo at the iconic Gorge Amphitheatre in their home state – ODESZA raced against the clock to bring a once-in-a-lifetime immersive installation to their fans.

Tapping SETUP and SNAPDRAGON as collaborators, ECHOES was an incredibly technically ambitious project. Yet, when it came time for 20,000 fans to experience the magic of ECHOES, it all came down to just one emotion: Gratitude.

The sight of ECHOES was one that took your breath away and the sonic scape starred intensely emotional fan voicemails. Walking into and out of the venue through the installation, thousands of ODESZA fans found themselves overwhelmed with gratitude, proud to be a part of such an expansive community. It carried real emotional weight.

While ODESZA has officially said their “last goodbye” for an indefinite amount of time, one thing is certain: the power of that music community is sure to echo for a very long time.

See the awe-striking ECHOES installation with this collection of photos below.

Fred again..’s Best Rap Collaborations

Fred again.. is finally having his breakout moment as one of the biggest names in music. Within the past few years, the English musician and DJ has taken the EDM world by storm with many hit records and collaborations. His album series Actual Life navigated the COVID-19 pandemic as he turned audio clips and sounds from social media and everyday life into joyful and melancholic moments named after those he sampled. The third installment earned him one of two Grammy Award wins. He took home Best Electronic/Dance Recording for “Rumble,” his collaboration with Skrillex and Flowdan. In addition to his awards and accolades, Fred again.. has headlined major festivals, including Bonnaroo and a closing B2B set with Skrillex and Four Tet at Coachella. Together, the three also sold out a pop-up show at Madison Square Garden.

Now a giant in the dance music world, Fred again.. is far from a new artist. Before focusing on an artist career, he produced for the likes of Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, Shawn Mendes, and BTS. Outside of electronic and dance music, Fred again.. is also active in hip-hop, producing tracks for numerous rappers in both the UK and the US. His earliest rap productions include Roots Manuva and Stefflon Don while he has also collaborated with Eminem, Baby Keem, and Lil Yachty in recent years. Today, we are ranking Fred again..’s best rap collaborations from least to greatest. Take a look at the list below.

7. “Jungle (Remix)” – Fred again.. feat. Rico Nasty (2022)

Fred again..’s silver-certified “Jungle” is one of his biggest singles. He recruited Rico Nasty for the remix, adding a rap twist to the dance-banger as Rico spits over the song’s abrasive beat drop. She matches the intense house beat with her usual energetic delivery. Fred also chops part of her verse to compliment the other vocal sample that acts as the song’s centerpiece. An essential Fred again.. song, “Jungle” already hits hard with its buildup and drop, but Rico Nasty’s guest verse on the remix packs an even more powerful punch.

6. “West Ten” – AJ Tracey & Mabel (2020)

With the help of Take A Daytrip, Fred again… crafted the beat for “West Ten,” AJ Tracey’s collaboration with Mabel. A smooth UK garage song, the track acts as a spiritual successor to AJ’s other UKG track and biggest hit, “Ladbroke Grove.” Much like his 2019 single, the song sees AJ rapping over the groovy beat from Fred as Mabel sings the chorus. AJ Tracey and Mabel’s “West Ten” is yet another danceable ode to West London and a fun song that recaptures the feeling of his biggest hit.

5. “Rumble” – Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan (2023)

Before they took over Coachella and Madison Square Garden, Skrillex and Fred again… teamed up with Flowdan for “Rumble,” a rap and EDM fusion. An intersection of grime and dubstep, the Grammy-winning single’s production is simple yet effective. The unpredictable percussion and stuttering basslines allow Flowdan to skip across the beat with his signature grime flow. The high-pitched sample of Beam’s vocals on Skrillex’s “Selecta” juxtaposes Flowdan’s deep voice. Fred and Skrillex’s production may be minimal, but the song builds to create an exciting blend of rap and electronic music.

4. “Baby” – Aitch (2022)

Many of Fred again..’s rap collaborations see the producer bringing artists into his world for experimental electronic tracks. In 2022, he ventured outside his comfort zone when making the beat for Aitch’s “Baby.” The lead single from the Manchester rapper’s debut album, Close To Home, is a smooth blend R&B and hip hop that emulates the early 2000’s. Aside from Aitch’s charismatic bars, the sample of Ashanti’s “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)” practically makes the song, so much so that she is credited as a primary artist. The production from Fred again.. and others bring out the best of Aitch, turning the sample’s vintage vibe into a summertime jam.

3. “Pop Boy” – Stormzy Ft. Aitch (2019)

Easily Fred again..’s hardest-hitting rap collaboration is “Pop Boy.” He produced one of three tracks for Stormzy’s Heavy Is The Head. The song’s explosive production constructs the right moment for Stormzy to showcase his confident lyricism as he revels in his success as a rapper who has crossed into pop. He even name-drops Fred again… before the chorus: “Fred, you forgot the drums, wait there.” The bouncy production on “Pop Boy” also allows for one of Aitch’s earliest breakout moments, exhibiting chemistry between him and Stormzy, as well as foreshadowing his and Fred’s future collaboration on “Baby.”

2. “Own It” – Stormzy feat. Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy (2019)

Another Fred again…-produced highlight from Stormzy’s Heavy Is the Head is “Own It.” The hit single is a crossover collaboration between Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, and Burna Boy. The dancehall production from Fred and Jay Weathers allows for each artist to shine individually. It lends itself to Stormzy’s rapping as his singing intertwines with Burna Boy’s chorus and Ed Sheeran’s standout vocals. “Own It” is a tender yet energetic track that brings the best out of its star performers. Fred again..’s production incorporates dancehall but can highlight elements of hip-hop, pop, and afrobeats.

1. “Know Me” – Headie One & Fred again.. (2020)

One of Fred again..’s most notable rap collaborations is GANG, his breathtaking project with Headie One. The 8-track EP chronicles the rapper’s recent release from prison at the time. A departure from Headie’s typical content, Fred provides a balance between his ambient, electronic sound and Headie’s typical UK drill. The whole project is transparent as it gives a multi-dimensional glimpse into the mind of one of Drill’s biggest stars during one of his most vulnerable moments.

A standout track from GANG, “Know Me” specifically pushes Headie out of his comfort zone on a fast-paced blend of techno and drill. Fred provides a thumping kick, rapid percussion, and modulated 808s that are essential to any UK drill track. Headie One floats over the beat and Fred manipulates his vocals, which adds to the track’s sense of urgency. “Know Me” exemplifies the brilliant convergence between the styles of Headie One and Fred again.. on GANG.

GORDO Lays Down A House Beat For Young Dolph On “Kill For This S***”

Young Dolph’s legacy in hip-hop was assuredly never fade. The Memphis rapper has heavily influenced the new sound of the city. It has helped make it one of the hottest spots for hip-hop stars, making it an established hub for the genre. It will be three years on November 17 since his untimely passing and the fans miss him more and more every day. Today, we have another posthumous track as Young Dolph and GORDO are teaming up for “Kill For This S***.”

GORDO may not sound familiar to many, but maybe referring to him as Carnage or DJ Carnage will help. The multi-genre producer has worked with some of the topflight rappers in the game from Migos, Young Thug, and more. This now GORDO’s first collaboration with Dolph and it is not your typical Memphis trap track. The Guatemalan-American DJ works in the EDM and house lanes too and that is the direction for “Kill For This S***.”

Listen To “Kill For This S***” By GORDO & Young Dolph

Unfortunately, while it is unique to hear Dolph over a house instrumental, the song does not go anywhere. It repeats the chorus twice, which is repetitive itself. It has the typical fast drums and synths and a beat drop or two. While we can respect the effort, it just does not land all that much.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “Kill For This S***,” By GORDO and Young Dolph? Do you like hearing him over a house beat, why or why not? Is GORDO one of the more talented producers we have going in hip-hop? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding GORDO and Young Dolph. Finally, stay with us for the most informative song posts throughout the week.

Dr. Dre’s Son On His EDM Career: “I’m Making Moves”

Recently, Dr. Dre’s son Tyler Young and his collaborator RMN sat down for a chat with TMZ, opening up about his journey to becoming an EDM artist. He revealed that although his roots are really planted in hip hop, largely due to his father’s influence, he’s decided to forge his own path outside of the genre. Young then describes being exposed to EDM by a friend as a teenager, saying that the rest was history.

He later went on to pursue EDM as a career option in his late 20s. “And now we’re here,” he explains. “Making moves out in Europe, pushing.” Luckily for Young, his father is in full-support of his career. “He started in EDM to be honest,” he says. “So, he’s skilled in his own right, for sure. But, I’ve kind of just been taking it in my own hands.”

Tyler Young Speaks On His Music Career

Young says that Dr. Dre is excited about his new EDM venture, but makes it clear that he’s set on creating a path for himself. “All I can do is just push from here,” he also adds. “It may come, it may not. But those perspectives don’t really matter to me, I’m just about the music.” This weekend, Young will be performing his first-ever set in Scotland.

Though Dr. Dre’s son is mixing things up with a career in EDM, the 58-year-old has been calling back to the ’90s lately. Currently, he’s working alongside Snoop Dogg on a follow-up to his 1993 hit debut, Doggystyle. The upcoming LP, Missionary, is set for release sometime this year, though it’s yet to have an official release date. According to The D.O.C., “It sounds like what Snoop’s next record would’ve been like on Death Row, that’s what it sounds like.” What do you think of Dr. Dre’s son venturing into EDM? Shaq, AKA Diesel, Drops New EDM Album “Gorilla Warfare”

In addition to being one of the most beloved NBA legends ever, Shaq is also a DJ. For those who may not know, he goes by the DJ name Diesel. Overall, this is an appropriate name as it plays off the whole “Diesel” nickname he had while in the league. Although he may have started his music journey as a rapper, he has done a nice job transitioning over to the EDM world. His sets are chaotic and fans always seek them out. If you see Diesel at an EDM festival, you know it is going to be a very fun time.

That said, the artist has been working on his craft quite a bit as of late. He has been showing off new songs at shows and has even released a couple of singles. Recently, however, Shaq decided to drop a brand-new album for all of his devoted fans out there. As you can see, the new project is called “Gorilla Warfare” and it contains 10 tracks. Although it may be a quick listen, there is definitely a lot to unpack here.

Shaq Is Back As Diesel

This style of EDM will probably get compared to Dubstep. There is a lot going on in these tracks, although this is made for those festival crowds. If you like a lot of texture and computer sounds, then this will be for you. However, if you are more into hip-hop and want to hear the man rap, you are likely to be disappointed. That said, this is a solid listen for those who are just genuinely curious.

Let us know what you think of this Diesel project, in the comments section down below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will be sure to keep you informed of all of the biggest releases from the biggest artists in the world.

Skrillex Pauses Concert After A Fire Breaks Out On Stage

Skrillex has had a very busy 2023 releasing two albums and a number of remixes already. He also filled in as a headliner during week 2 of Coachella after Frank Ocean pulled out and delivered a Boiler Room-style EDM set alongside fellow artists Fred Again… and Four Tet. Just a few days ago Skrillex debuted a new remix of Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s hit song “Princess Diana” which Nicki herself seemed to enjoy.

During his performance at a different festival over the weekend, Primavera Sound, he had to briefly pause in the middle due to a fire. The show was paused for over 10 minutes after one of the lights on the stage above where Skrillex was standing caught on fire. Festival organizers lower the light and put it out with a handheld fire extinguisher. Fans in attendance shared dozens of videos of the fire to social media as soon as it happened.

Skrillex’s Scary Situation

After a quiet 2022, Skrillex has seemingly been everywhere this year. His two new albums “Quest For Fire” and “Don’t Get Too Close” have very different sounds but feature a number of high-profile collaborators. Missy Elliott, Swae Lee, Kid Cudi, Chief Keef, Don Toliver, Yung Lean, Justin Bieber, and many more appear as features on various songs from either album. Alongside all of these collaborations he’s worked and performed with breakout garage producer Fred Again… and micro-house legend Four Tet. The trio have reportedly been living together in New York since sometime last year.

Skrillex and company served as a last-minute addition to weekend two of Coachella following Frank Ocean’s controversial headlining set. The show left fans disappointed after it started late and ended early. For weekend two, the ice skating rink which was meant for Frank’s show was repurposed for Skrillex’s replacement show. It was one of dozens of festival spots the EDM superstar has played in 2023. It followed a series of tweets he made earlier this year explaining the personal reasons behind his absence. Watch the video of the on-stage fire and tell us what you think in the comment section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for more updates.

Who Is KAYTRANADA?

KAYTRANADA is an artist whose genre may be hard to describe for some. While in a technical sense, it is EDM (Electronic Dance Music), he brings something new to it entirely – a groove. His music combines elements from house, dance, R&B, hip-hop, and more. Because of this diversified blend, KAYTRANADA has featured rappers and singers in his songs. This has been a constant throughout his entire career. Like other EDM artists, he’s also remixed other songs, some of them being chart-topping pop hits. However, his latest endeavor is a full collaboration album with rapper Aminé. The title of the album – and their duo – KAYTRAMINÉ creatively combine their names.

KAYTRANADA Went Through A Journey

KAYTRANADA’s genre-defining origins go back to the year 2010. At this point, he was going by the moniker Kaytradamus. He grew up in Canada and was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. He dropped out of high school to pursue music full-time and help his family financially. Under the moniker Kaytradamus, he released two projects and shortened his name to KAYTRANADA in 2012. One of these projects was a collaboration project with his brother, rapper Lou Phelps. The name of their duo was The Celestics. He began gaining notoriety through his remixes on SoundCloud and, in 2015, opened for Madonna for shows in the United States and Canada. Another landmark career moment is his Boiler Room DJ Set in Montreal from 2013, which has received over 19 million views on YouTube.

KAYTRANADA’s Albums Are Star-Studded

KAYTRANADA’s genre-blending debut album had a lot of heavy hitters. Titled 99.9%, the album has 16 tracks and an eye-catching cover. Naturally, there are several features on the album as well as instrumental solo tracks. These features included unique bands like BADBADNOTGOOD and Little Dragon, with the former having a strong connection to the rap world. Soulful singers like Anderson .Paak and Syd also made appearances. This debut album brought many new ears to KAYTRANADA’s music through these collaborations. After this, KAYTRANADA continued doing remixes/edits/versions of other songs. These were done for artists like singer Teedra Moses. This showcased his ability to adapt and bring something from one world to his. He also released more singles which featured the now-defunct duo VanJess, Kelela, and Ty Dolla $ign.

KAYTRANADA’s second album solidified his music in the game. This project had even bigger features than his debut project. This project, titled BUBBA, dropped in 2019. It featured heavy hitters like SiR, Kali Uchis, Masego, Pharrell, and more. This album is a special one in his discography. In 2020, he released the instrumental version of it. This is becoming more and more common with producers. Their listeners go to them for their production, but a song with vocals may only get to appreciate it during the song’s final instrumental moments fully. By having the instrumental version of the album available, his listeners can decide which version of their favorite songs they want to hear.

KAYTRANADA’s Collabs Are Notable

KAYTRANADA’s music is one whose genre is often called “dance” but calling it “genreless” may be even more accurate. On his EP Intimidated, released in 2021, he collaborates with singer H.E.R., bassist/singer Thundercat, and underground rapper Mach-Hommy. The one with Mach-Hommy, titled “$payforhaiti,” has him connecting with a fellow Haitian artist. However, many were introduced to KAYTRANADA through his work with the neo-soul band, The Internet. He’s credited as a feature on their song “Girl” and has production credits. He also remixed their song “Roll (Burbank Funk).” KAYTRANADA also co-produced the PinkPantheress single “Do you miss me?” He even ventured into the pop world and remixed Dua Lipa’s mega-hit “Don’t Start Now.” However, his biggest remix might be his version of Beyonce’s “CUFF IT,” which he debuted at Coachella 2023 and has not released on streaming services yet.

KAYTRANADA Will Continue To Be Himself

KAYTRANADA came out to the world in an interview with The Fader in 2016. Before this, he came out to his family as bi, but after more reflection, he came out as gay. Before these moments, he spoke of feeling like two people were inside him and like he was trying to be something he was not. These emotions affected his mental state, relationship, and interactions with family members. Since coming out, things have naturally been better in all aspects as he feels genuinely happy with himself and the relationships he has in his life.

Wiz Khalifa Joins DVBBS On Their “Sh Sh Sh (Hit That)” Single

EDM producers DVBBS just tapped Wiz Khalifa for their own spin on a viral track with “Sh Sh Sh (Hit That).” Moreover, its inspiration “Hit That” by Urfavxboyfriend and Goldsoul caught a lot of attention recently on TikTok. The original’s a dark but oddly charismatic trap cut, thanks to the whooshy mouthed sounds of gunfire from the artists. After its success, DVBBS loved what they heard and reached out to all artists involved to do a collab together. Furthermore, their take on “Hit That” is a house and jungle-inspired dance cut that mixes the original’s verses with heavy kicks and a Wiz verse.

However, the track still switches up its genre of choice and its instrumental pallet quite often in the track. As such, the various phases, transitions, and movements throughout “Sh Sh Sh” make it a pretty dynamic track. First, the track begins with an energetic build-up to Urfavxboyfriend’s verse, which uses house-like rhythms. Then, it switches into a small trap section with deep bass and sharp percussion. Finally, distorted bass breaks the song up before resonant grand piano chords introduce Wiz’s verse. “I’m rolling papers like diplomas,” he begins his charismatic and focused contribution. “I’m getting baked like this a sauna / I love all the woman, different genres / I seen all expensive s**t and bought it.” Overall, “Sh Sh Sh (Hit That)” is a fun and fittingly to-the-point reimagining of a fun and to-the-point viral track.

Quotable Lyrics
I be with some real ones, y’all VR,
Gotta put my glasses on to see y’all,
Smoking on that light green like neon,
Been working out, it’s hard to get her jeans on
