EarthGang “Robophobia” Review

Atlanta rap duo EarthGang have carved out a sonically unique niche for themselves within the rap genre, which elevates them to the status of underground legends. With nearly 3.5 million monthly Spotify listeners, the duo have solidified their catalogue with complex genre-blending bangers, making them one of the most fascinating rap acts currently working. The pair, who are signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville label alongside frequent collaborators such as JID, Bas, and Ari Lennox, have been releasing a series of EPs under the banner EarthGang vs. The Algorithm, with their latest effort Robophobia showcasing the encroaching influences of artificial intelligence on art and music. Robophobia offers yet another sonic curveball for fans of the eccentric group, with funk and trap influences blending the group’s sound into a cornucopia of high-intensity jams.

The EP Blends Jazz And Funk Soul Influences

EarthGang’s Robophobia lends itself to a number of fascinating sounds. This is evident right from the beginning, as the first song “Blacklight” offers a smooth funk tune which entices and sucks listeners into the immersive world of the growing EarthGang Vs. The Algorithm narrative. “Blacklight” served as the lead single for the tape, initially released in November 2023. Although already available to the public, the song takes on a new significance when considered within the broader context of Robophobia, highlighting human error and imperfection in an era increasingly dominated by digital creation and auto-tuned vocal passages.

The following track, “Put In Work” opens with a few jazzy piano thrusts before launching into a thumping banger with alternative vocalist Tommy Newport featured on the hook. The track possesses a versatile quality, suitable for both a lively nightclub atmosphere and a relaxed smoke session at home. However, its infectious basslines and pulsating percussion may compel you to involuntarily leap from your seat and bust out a few dance moves.

The Duo Frequently Switch Roles In Their Music

While both Olu and WowGr8 are recognized for their versatility in music, Olu has developed a reputation for leading the melodic and note-carrying aspects of most EarthGang tracks, while WowGr8 often employs lyrical double entendres that appeal to die-hard hip-hop enthusiasts. This dynamic is evident on some Robophobia tracks, such as “Put In Work,” but shifts on songs like “Osmosis,” where WowGr8’s heavenly vocal arrangements take center stage while Olu raps like the rent is due.

As the project’s closing track, “Perfect Fantasy” offers powerful sample-heavy production, with a concluding through-line about celebrating life’s blessings. The track also showcases the best guest feature on the effort, with a lively performance from West Coast legend Snoop Dogg. The 52-year-old MC has delivered a few underwhelming features in recent years, though the “Murder Was The Case” rapper knew to bring his A-game when working with one of the most talented and creative duos active today.

Conclusion

Due to the nature of EarthGang’s ever-changing sound and style, Robophobia has as much potential to be your favorite project from the duo as it does to be your least favorite. Fans of the group will surely appreciate the bold new direction the EP takes, though some more lyrically inclined listeners may prefer EarthGang’s earlier work. At the end of the day, the EP accomplishes its stated goals, to make contemplative genre-blending music which furthers the narrative of EarthGang vs. the Algorithm, and truly makes the listener think about the state of art and music in a digital landscape.

EARTHGANG & Spillage Village Deliver 5-Song EP “ROBOPHOBIA”

Back in November 2023, experimentative rap duo EARTHGANG gave us a first look at the type of direction their next project would take. That path is one of funk, soul, R&B, with some of their hip-hop knowledge thrown in for good measure. On Instagram earlier this month they shared this message. “Robophobia is a sonic dive into a new terrain for @EarthGang as we explore new soundscapes and topics on imperfections, connections and projections within humanity’s relationship with each other and AI.” “BLACKLIGHT” was the introductory track for the now-released tape.

EARTHGANG’s ROBOPHOBIA is also a bit of sequel for the Atlanta natives. Back in September of last year, they worked their extended rap collective Spillage Village to bring a five-track EP, RIP Human Art. These two projects do share some commonalities both thematically and curation wise. As for the latter, this latest entry in the EARTHGANG vs The Algorithm series is also five tracks.

Listen To ROBOPHOBIA By EARTHGANG & Spillage Village

For the themes both are centering around technology, imperfections, and our relationship with AI. Which makes sense considering their outlook they mentioned earlier. All in all it is a very solid EP on both the writing and production fronts. It all sounds futuristic, vibey, and fun all at the same time.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new EP, ROBOPHOBIA, by EARTHGANG and Spillage Village? Do you like this sonic direction for the duo, why or why not? Earthgang Unveils The Release Date For Their AI-Inspired EP ‘Robophobia’

The boom of AI-generated music has caused a divide across the industry. While superstars like Drake and Bad Bunny have rejected its rise in popularity. The Recording Academy has embraced the new recording technology. Now, Earthgang is set to show their support for the latest creative wave.

Come Friday, February 23, fans will learn just how far AI can push the boundaries of music thanks to Earthgang’s forthcoming project, Robophobia. In a post on the group’s official Instagram page, Earthgang unveiled the futuristic artwork. This isn’t by any means Earthgang’s first blending technology and music. Earthgang’s 2023 EP EarthGang vs. The Algorithm: RIP Human Art leaned into these concepts.

To give supporters a peek into their minds, the duo shared a note detailing the inspiration behind the upcoming release. “‘Robophobia’ is a sonic dive into a new terrain for [us],” they wrote. “We [will] explore new soundscapes and topics on imperfections, connections, and projections within humanity’s relationship with each other and AI.”

Today (February 19), Earthgang shared the official video for their single, “Blacklight” with Spillage Village, to tease what’s to come. Watch the visual above.

Robophobia is out on 2/23 via Dreamville Records. Find more information here.

EarthGang Drops Funk-Inspired Single “Black Light” as Prelude to Upcoming EP

EarthGang Drops Funk-Inspired Single "Black Light" as Prelude to Upcoming EP

The dynamic duo EarthGang has returned with their latest single, “Black Light,” setting the stage for their upcoming EP, Robophobia, scheduled for release on Nov. 17th. This funk-inspired track follows their recent EP, “Earthgang vs the Algorithm: RIP Human Art,” which made waves last month.

“Black Light” is the lead single for Robophobia and offers a vintage sound, reminiscent of the soulful vibes of the 70s, a time untouched by the digital age. The EP is part of EarthGang’s three-part series, “Earthgang vs the Algorithm,” which passionately opposes the growing influence of algorithms and champions genuine creativity and freedom.

The song masterfully blends elements of hip-hop and funk, celebrating the raw human artistry and individuality. Its mellow tempo, highlighted by a groovy bassline, creates a captivating ambiance. The recurring lyrics, “black light, expose your flaws,” remind listeners of the power of acknowledging and growing from imperfections. With melodic R&B vocals, “Black Light” invites introspection and self-acceptance. EarthGang continues to push boundaries and deliver soulful, thought-provoking music for their fans.

EARTHGANG Ignores The Flaws On Their New “Blacklight” Single

Another Atlanta hip-hop duo who is doing things outside of the trap box is EARTHGANG. They are back to provide some elements of funk and old-school vibes on an all-new track, “Blacklight.” The duo includes their secondary group, Spillage Village in the credits as well. However, that is essentially to promote this as assumedly a lead single for an upcoming collaboration project with the rest of the artists.

This follows up on their five-track EP, RIP Human Art. EARTHGANG put that out not too long ago on September 22. That featured the singles, “Bobby Boucher,” which Adam Sandler gave kudos to, and “Die Today.” RIP Human Art is expected to be a part of a new series of projects.

Listen To “Blacklight” From EARTHGANG And Spillage Village

“Blacklight,” as we said earlier, only features vocal work from EARTHANG members, Doctur Dot and Johnny Venus. However, there is no rapping anywhere to be seen. Both artists are singing in a drawn-out and raspy-like manner. The beat is very slow-mo-esque with hints of funk thrown in. The track is about loving your signficant other even with all of their flaws.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new song from EARTHGANG and Spillage Village, “Blacklight?” Will this land on an upcoming project, or will it be a loosie? What part of the track is your favorite? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Quotable Lyrics:

I know, sometimes you hate yourself
I know, sometimes you need some help, but, it’s hard to find
Slowly find yourself
Confessin’ things while my fingers run through your hair
Uh, I ain’t gon’ diagnose you, I ain’t gon’ try to fix you
You could treat this present moment like a real-life Finsta

Earthgang’s ‘Blacklight’ Single Featuring Spillage Village Is A Radically Funky Soundtrack For Unconditional Acceptance

As their name suggests, the duo Earthgang is tapped into their worldly surroundings. This constant connective is often manifested in their releases, such as their introspective single “Die Today” and even on the pop-culture spectrum of “Bobby Boucher.” Their latest track, “Blacklight,” featuring Spillage Village, does the same.

Instead of focusing on themselves, the group uses the funky Nandish “Dish” Patel-produced record to create a radical soundtrack for unconditional acceptance of self.

“I know, sometimes you hate yourself / I know, sometimes you need some help, but, it’s hard to find / Slowly find yourself here in my bed / Confessin’ things while my fingers run through your hair / I ain’t gon’ diagnose you, I ain’t gon’ try to fix you / You could treat this present moment like a real-life Finsta / All the things you did that you could never tell your mom or sister / All that sh*t you pray about that weigh you down, yeah, I forgive you / What gets you wetter than acceptance? You ain’t gotta be no angel in my presence / We all got a past that points to where we headed / Ain’t it funny how your scars all point in my direction,” raps Johnny Venus.

Earthgang implores listeners to embrace themselves beyond their visible flawless but what only a blacklight can detect.

The track is the first offering from the group’s forthcoming project, Earthgang Vs. the Algorithm Vol. 2: ROBOPHOBIA. In a statement, Earthgang shared the inspiration behind the body of work. “There’s so much happening in the world. As we know, our inner state reflects our outer state. This record is for anyone having inner change, a metamorphosis, a period of feeling out of balance while you cocoon for your butterfly season,” read the note.
