Drake “Family Matters”: Unpacking The Bars

On “Family Matters,” Drake gives a bold retort to Kendrick Lamar’s “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA.” This marks his third entry in their lyrical battle. As expected, Drake directs a barrage of pointed jabs towards Kendrick. But while he tries to dismantle the allegations Kendrick has woven into his own tracks, he makes sure to leave more than one verse for some of his other industry “enemies.” The result is a polarizing track filled with grand allegations, call-outs, and shots fired in multiple directions, including at A$AP Rocky and Rihanna.

Premise And Production

The track features three distinct beat switches, mirroring Kendrick’s style, to emphasize the seriousness of the attack. Additionally, production credits for the track belong to Canadian producers Boi1da, Tay Keith, and Mark Ronson. Overall, the track’s sound is as heavyweight as its content, and picks up from “Push Ups.” Drake also bends different musical elements to create a sound that’s both familiar and fresh. While the beats are hard-hitting, the bass lines are deep, there’s also urgency in the rhythm that matches the gravity of the words.

Opening Shots

Drake’s mother, Sandra Graham’s voice opens “Family Matters” with “‘Maybe in this song, you shouldn’t start by saying…” right before it cuts to Drake rapping: “N***a, I said it, I know that you mad  / I’ve emptied the clip over friendlier jabs / You mentioned my seed, now deal with his dad / I gotta go bad, I gotta go bad.” This line establishes that his anger at Kendrick was not just about questioning his Blackness. It’s also about bringing his son Adonis into the beef.

Familial Offenses

Drake picks Kendrick’s relationship with his family apart for the entirety of “Family Matters.” In regards to Kendrick’s father Drake raps: “Your daddy got robbed by Top, you Stunna and Wayne, like father, like son / Anthony set up the plays, Kojo be chargin’ you double for nothin’.” This references the claims he made on “Push Ups” where he alleged TDE boss Top Dawg locked Kendrick in a bad contract for the 17 years he was at TDE. Drake references, “DUCKWORTH,” a song detailing how Kendrick’s dad avoided getting robbed by Top Dawg.

Meanwhile the music video for “Family Matters” shows what looks to be Kendrick’s mother’s Dodge Caravan, which appeared on the cover of good kid, m.A.A.d city. The video sees the car getting towed through Toronto before getting violently crushed in a junkyard. Then, in the third verse, he shoots a line at Kendrick’s trans uncle whom Kendrick references in his song “Auntie Diaries.” Drake raps, “Where is your uncle at? ‘Cause I wanna talk to the man of the house.”

Drake’s Comes For Kendrick’s Relationship

“Family Matters” also touches on Kendrick’s romantic life. First, Drake goes ahead and flips the Black authenticity script on Kendrick. He points out that Kendrick’s fiancée, Whitney, is also half-Black. He also references Kendrick allegedly cheating on his fiancée with white women. “You the Black messiah wifin’ up a mixed queen / And hit vanilla cream to help out with your self-esteem,” he raps.

Moreover, he suggested through his lyrics that Kendrick physically assaulted his fiancée Whitney. “Your baby mama captions always screamin, ‘Save me’ / You did her dirty all her life, you tryna make peace,” he said. As if that weren’t explicit enough, he continued, “When you put your hands on your girl, is it self-defense ’cause she bigger than you?” Furthermore, Drake alleged that Kendrick’s label intervened amid the alleged domestic violence allegations. “They hired a crisis management team / to clean up the fact that you beat on your queen.

Finally, to seal the crown, Drake suggests that one of Kendrick’s kids is not his own. Specifically, he claims the baby might belong to Dave Free. So the track not only touches on K-Dot’s alleged infidelity, but also Whitney’s. “I heard that one of them little kids might be Dave Free / Don’t make it dave Free’s / ‘Cause if your GM is your BM secret BD / Then this is all making plenty f*ckin sense to me.

Accusations Of Inauthenticity And Disloyalty

On “Family Matters,” Drake accuses Kendrick of being a fake Black activist and a subpar rapper. He also questions his credibility within gang-related culture. “If you had a set they’d give your ass a DP / But you civilian gang, in real life you PC,he rapped. Drake also claimed that Kendrick’s best raps are actually the work of Baby Keem. “K.Dot shit is only hitting hard when Baby Keem put his pen to it,” he raps.

Interestingly, he also reveals how Kendrick was allegedly behind his lawsuit for using 2Pac’s voice on “Taylor Made Freestyle.” The track, which made use of AI, was heavily polarizing upon release. Moreover, Drake faced criticism for the use of AI. “A cease-and-desist is for h*es / Can’t listen to lies that come out of your mouth / You called the Tupac estate / And begged them to sue me and get that s**t down.

Prior to all this, Drake also calls Kendrick’s loyalty into question. When Drake first announced “Family Matters,” it was with an Instagram post featuring a whole other song, “Buried Alive Interlude.” In the snippet, he flips a Take Care tune (the same song Kendrick appeared on) against the Compton rapper. Drake also raps about bringing Kendrick on his Club Paradise tour as an opening act in 2012. Moreover, he brings up J. Cole in one of the verses. “And wait, you say your brother Jermaine, but you wanted him to stay out of the light,” he spits.

The Case Against Other Artists

Drake makes it clear on “Family Matters” that no one is beyond reach. As a result, he launches verbal volleys at a host of figures. Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky, and industry heavyweight Dave Free receive mentions on the diss song. For example, he accuses Metro Boomin of swaying Future against him and as a result, bringing artists like Kendrick Lamar to attack him further. “Leland Wayne, he a f*ckin’ lame, so I know he had to be an influence / These n****s had a plan and they finally found a way to rope you into it / Two separate albums dissin’, I just did a Kim to it, n****, skim through it.”

With ASAP Rocky, the insults even involve Rihanna, whom he refers to as “Fring,” a supposed nickname Drake gave her when they dated. “Gassed ’cause you hit my BM first, n**** / do the math, who I was hittin’ then? / I ain’t even know you rapped still ’cause they only talkin’ ’bout your ‘fit again / Probably gotta have a kid again ‘fore you think of droppin’ any sh*t again / Even when you do drop, they gon’ say you should’ve modeled ’cause it’s mid again / Smokin’ Fenty ’bout it, should’ve put you on the first one, tryna get it in” Unsurprisingly, much of Drake’s jabs at other artists were met with criticism. He was also accused of his inability to let his past relationships go.

LeBron James Spotted Dancing To Kendrick Lamar’s Drake Diss “Not Like Us”

LeBron James is a big rap fan. LeBron can be seen on various Instagram stories over the years, repping many a different artist, rapping their songs, and enjoying their music. LeBron seems to have a good relationship with both Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The Drake Kendrick beef is making people pick sides. Athletes like tennis stars Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff have both sided with the Compton rapper. It seems everyone is realizing that Drake lost the feud. Now King James has been spotted having a good time dancing to Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss “Not Like Us.

Kendrick Lamar has even name-checked LeBron in his flurry of disses aimed at the Toronto rapper. On Kendrick’s “Meet The Grahams,” he rapped, “Ayy, LeBron, keep the family away, hey, Curry, will you keep the family away?” With all the allegations against Drake, Kendrick urges the athletes who have had close ties to Drizzy to be careful. LeBron was previously seen jamming to Kendrick and Futures track “Like That,” the song that started everything, during his warm-ups in the play-in tournament. LeBron has now been spotted two-stepping the night away to Kendricks’s mega-hit diss.

LeBron Dancing To “Not Like Us”

It is safe to say LeBron James approves of Kendrick Lamar’s viscous and bumping “Not Like Us.” Drake and fans were clamoring for Kendrick to make something people could dance to, and he did just that. Now King James is hitting a slight jig at the expense of his once close associate, Drake. LeBron is also hilariously trying to look like he is in all black and a hat, but we all know it’s him. It is probably in his best interest to cut ties with Drake anyway since he is the face of the Los Angeles Lakers. Lamar is a Laker fan and is from Compton, so it only makes sense.

LeBrons future in LA is up in the air. They are going to try and do everything they can to retain the King’s services. The Kendrick Lamar-Drake feud seems like it has a definitive winner. No one is really stepping out there to defend Drake. The only thing that can turn the tide is another diss from Drizzy. Nevertheless, we know that one diss from Drake means two are on the way from Mr. Lamar.

Kendrick Lamar Falls Just Short Of Breaking Drake’s Spotify Streaming Record

Earlier this week, Kendrick Lamar pulled off the incredibly impressive feat of breaking one of Drake’s streaming records with a literal Drake diss track. His song “Not Like Us” broke the record previously held by Drake’s Certified Lover Boy opener “Champagne Poetry.’ The record itself was for the most streams by of any solo rap song on Spotify in a single day. But Drake also holds plenty of other Spotify records. One of which is the most streams in a single day for any rap song.

The track that holds the crown is his collaboration with Lil Bay “Girls Like Girls.” That track also lands on Drake’s 2021 album Certified Lover Boy and racked up 12.385 million streams in a single day. The song went viral the moment it dropped largely due to one particular lyrics where Drake calls himself a lesbian. “Not Like Us” the same song that broke “Champagne Poetry’s” record nearly also broke the overall record. When all was said and done it came up just 5000 streams short of stealing the crown of most streamed rap song in a single day in Spotify history. Check out the full report from Chart Data below.

Kendrick Lamar Comes Within 5k Streams Of Drake’s Record

Big numbers have been the story of the entire Kendrick and Drake beef. Both of the songs that kicked it off “First Person Shooter” and “Like That” debuted at number one on the Hot 100. The former even spent a full three weeks at the top spot. It now ranks among Kendrick’s top 10 biggest hits of his career on the Hot 100. It could end up being surpassed by one or both of “euphoria” and “Not Like Us.” The former is expected to challenge for number one next week. The later will challenge for the top spot the week after.

What do you think of Kendrick Lamar almost breaking multiple Spotify records held by Drake with a diss track against him? Do you think the pair are done with their beef or will they release more songs at some point? Let us know in the comment section below.

Coco Gauff Picks Kendrick Lamar Over Drake Because Of Serena Williams Diss

Coco Gauff is the latest of many who have taken a definitive stance in the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake feud. Yesterday Tennis star Naomi Osaka planted her flag on Kendrick’s side, stating he won the beef. Osaka also urged the rapper to drop another diss record because “Not Like Us” was so good. Now her fellow Tennis star Coco Gauff has chosen a side in the feud. Coco has chosen Kendrick Lamar as the winner, and it’s for good reason.

Coco Gauff’s decision to side with Kendrick Lamar over Drake is not just a matter of personal preference in music. It’s a decision rooted in her personal connection to the feud. Gauff’s support for Kendrick stems from Drake’s repeated disses against her idol, Serena Williams. In her own words, Gauff explained, “To be honest, I liked Kendrick’s songs more. And I think pretty much everyone I know is leaning towards him. But I do like Drake as an artist as well. But as far as the rap battle is going on, the rap beef, I think definitely Kendrick’s winning. Also, Drake dissed Serena [Williams] so I have to go with Kendrick. Kendrick defended her, so yeah, I have to go with him.”

Coco Gauff Joins Team Kendrick

In the song “Middle of the Ocean” from 2022, Drake referred to Williams’ spouse, Alexis Ohanian, as a “groupie.” Although they were never official, there were also rumors that Drake and Williams had dated in the past.  Kendrick Lamar defended his fellow Compton Native Williams on the hit diss track “Not Like Us.” Kendrick rapped, “From Alondra down to Central / n**gas better not speak on Serena.” Coco Gauff idolizes Serena, so her choosing Kendrick is a no-brainer.

Four-time Grand Slam title champion Naomi Osaka said of the beef, “Kendrick dropped some heat.” She continued, “That last song is amazing, and I played it while walking onto the court.” Popular opinion is that Kendrick Lamar has officially won the feud. Drake’s last diss track did not go over like the rapper wanted. Meanwhile, Kendirk’s “Not Like Us” may have become an all-time diss record. Overall, Osaka and Coco Gauff are part of the team Kendrick for good reason.

Freddie Gibbs’ Outside-The-Box Take On Who Won The Drake And Kendrick Lamar Beef

Discussion about the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef is finally starting to slow down ever so slightly. With Drake’s most recent diss “The Heart Part 6” he proclaimed that he was done with the beef. It’s also been a full week with no responses from the otherwise quite speedy Lamar. That’s led to some rappers and members of the hip-hop media to look at the beef in its totality and try to decide who won. That’s what fans wanted Freddie Gibbs to weigh in on when they asked him on Twitter, but he had a pretty surprising answer.

When a fan asked Freddie straight up who he thought won between Kendrick and Drake, he gave an alternate response. “The record labels” he responded in a quote tweet to the original question. It’s a fair response given that the beef has sparked an absolutely massive flood of streams for nearly every single new track released. Both Drake and Kendrick have already had songs debut in the top 20 of the Hot 100 with “Push-Ups” and “euphoria.” “euphoria” is even expected to compete for the very top spot on the chart next week. That’s even without mentioning “Not Like Us. “ The track is off to a hotter start than any of the songs that preceded it. Check out Freddie’s response and the reactions it garnered below.

Freddie Gibbs Thinks The Labels Won Drake-Kendrick Beef

Freddie isn’t completely alone in his speculation. Any time a substantial beef hits the world of hip-hop plenty of fans speculate that it could be faked. They claim that the virality of seeing some of the genre’s biggest voices attacking each other causes records to sell and money to be made.

What do you think of Freddie Gibbs take on who actually won the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef? Do you believe the theories that some rap beefs are fake and assembled by labels to sell records? Let us know in the comment section below.

Did Gunna Diss Drake On ‘Still Prevail’ From His New Album ‘One Of Wun?’

After exchanging diss tracks with Kendrick Lamar all weekend, Drake seemingly threw in the towel on Sunday night with the release of “The Heart Part 6.” From the song’s spoken outro, it seems that the Toronto superstar had grown tired of sparring with his Compton opponent, and wanted to move onto other things.

Unfortunately for Drake, it doesn’t look like the slew of rappers who joined in from seemingly all sides is interested in letting him walk away. In fact, some fans on Twitter noticed a line from Gunna’s album, One Of Wun, that suggests another fighter is jumping into the fray.

Did Gunna Diss Drake On His New Album?

Gunna, who released his new album One Of Wun today, appears to go after Drake on the song “Still Prevail.” In it, he rhymes, “I clear all the tabs, they pay for their abs,” evoking a similar jab that has been used against him by Kendrick, as well as Joe Budden, Rick Ross, and even Azealia Banks.

It has long been rumored that the “Hotline Bling” singer got liposuction on his midsection — a rumor that Drake has never denied (although, to be fair, you can’t prove a negative). If Gunna really is referring to Drake with that line, it would bring the total of former collaborators turned competitors to five (six, if you count Meek Mill).

Incidentally, fans were sure that Gunna actually had a beef with Future, who seemingly announced the release of a project of his own earlier this week (which turned out to just be a single) with a remark that fans thought disparaged the younger Atlanta rapper. It remains to be seen how that’ll play out, but for now, it looks like rap’s tangled web of civil conflicts just got even more complex.

Police Were Called To Drake’s Toronto Mansion Again For A Second Trespasser In As Many Days

Drake’s home has been the site of two attempted break-ins and a shooting in just one week. One person was hospitalized earlier in the week after trying to break into Drake’s Toronto mansion, and now, another trespasser was caught. According to TMZ, at around 3:30 ET yesterday afternoon, police were called to the mansion after another person tried to get onto the property and got into an altercation with Drake’s security. That person was later taken to the hospital as well, but no reason was given. The first would-be home invader “was apprehended under the mental health act and taken to get medical assistance,” according to Toronto police.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday (May 7), a security guard was “seriously injured” in a reported drive-by shooting. The guard underwent surgery at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the upper chest.

The three incidents came after an utterly miserable weekend for the international superstar, who found himself on the receiving end of a trio of vicious diss tracks from rival rapper Kendrick Lamar. While Drake tried to return fire with a pair of songs of his own, disparaging the dubious info Kendrick used against him, fans were less than impressed by the results.

Another Trespessar Detained at Drake’s Toronto Home

Drake Dreamville

Another person has been arrested after trespassing on Drake’s home. This is the third incident at the Toronto mansion in three days.

The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m. local time, where a trespasser got into an altercation with security before police arrived. The trespasser was taken to a hospital for injuries sustained during the event.

Unwelcome visitors continue to visit Drake’s Toronto home, nicknamed The Embassy. According to TMZ, on Wednesday (May 9) a man was placed in police custody after attempting to access the sprawling mansion.

Officers were called to the Bridal Path home after a man was intercepted at the security gate and detained until officers arrived. The man was arrested under the Mental Health Act. Canada Global News reporter Tracy Tong revealed the man stated he was “here to see Drake” before engaging in a scuffle with security.

This incident happened less than 24 hours after a shooting at Drake’s residence. According to The Toronto Sun, the man injured is a 48-year-old security guard. He was struck by bullets while “standing outside the gates in front of the home.”

The shooting occurred at 2:09 a.m., and the injuries were considered life-threatening. The shooting was a drive by. One of the bullets hit in the upper chest. The man was transported to the Sunnybrook Hospital and is listed in serious condition.

After the drive-by shooting, a vehicle was seen leaving the area. Law enforcement is allegedly battling “video quality” issues.

There are no details on whether Drake was home despite being seen in Toronto recently.

Tory Lanez Says Drake Won the Beef in Phone Call From Jail

Win a Chance to Sit Down With Tory Lanez and The Source Magazine in NYC This Week

Tory Lanez is speaking from jail to reveal his winner in the Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef. Unsurprisingly, Lanez is riding with Toronto and naming Drake the winner.

Lanez called Joe Budden and broke down why Drizzy won. You can hear the details from Budden below.

Tory Lanez is ready to give his first interview from prison. According to Adin Ross, the Chixtape rapper will call into his stream via Zoom.

“Yo chat, by the way, free my dawg Tory, man,” Adin said. “Adin x Tory Lanez stream — it’s going to be a Zoom call, chat. He’s going to be in jail and I’m going to be at the warehouse. Zoom call, very, very soon.”

The Game Destroys Rick Ross On New Diss Song “Freeway’s Revenge”

The Game loves to battle. Few popular rappers have picked more fights than the Compton spitter. He went at 50 Cent, he disrespected Dr. Dre, and he penned a ten-minute song aimed at Eminem called “The Black Slim Shady.” Anybody can get it as far as Game is concerned, and Rick Ross is his latest target. The Game had been throwing shots at Ross during the first week of May. He taunted Rozay’s weight and posted an AI photo of the boss running on his Instagram Story. There was a beef on the horizon and Game crystalized it on May 10 with “Freeway’s Revenge.”

The Game does not waste any time playing nice. The literal opening lines of the song see him rap about cutting Rick Ross’ stomach open and stuffing bricks in it. It’s a horrifying visual, and a clever riff on the Miami rapper’s imagined kingpin persona. “I can see the b*tch in him,” Game raps with seething anger. “You 12 lemon pepper wings away from a heart attack.”

Once again, he goes at Ross’ weight, and ties things back to the aforementioned AI photo. Rozay is running, like we said, but he’s also dressed like a corrections officer outfit and ducking a cop while carrying a bucket of chicken. Subtle? Nope. Effective for a diss? Very much so.

The Game Uses Rick Ross’ Own Flow To Diss Him

The Game then proves that he’s been keeping tabs on the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle by making reference to DJ Akademiks and Kai Cenat. Both streamers have been instrumental in covering the big battle of 2024, and it sounds like the Compton rapper wants some of the action. “Akademiks, get this n**ga Ozyempic starter pack,” he spits. “Kai Cenat, hit the room, turn that stream on.” The Game also references Drake and Kendrick Lamar by name. “This ain’t the Kendrick beef,” he adds. “My Drake sing song shots ring out.”

The rapper regains his focus during the second half of the diss, thankfully. He stops name-dropping other people and lays into Ross over his law enforcement past. He also pulls out a trick he used on the Eminem diss by emulating Rozay’s voice and referencing the rapper’s old lyrics. The instrumental switch furthers the menacing vibe, sounding like the sort of lavish sound that the MMG label boss usually raps over himself.

The Game doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know about Rick Ross, but it is a pretty entertaining diss. Let’s see where it goes.
