Roots Picnic Is Returning To The Hollywood Bowl With ‘Class Of ’95’ Featuring Lil Kim, Red & Meth, E-40, And More

The Roots Picnic has been an annual tradition in the band’s hometown, Philadelphia, for the past decade, but this year, they expanded that tradition to the West Coast with a concert at the Hollywood Bowl featuring a slew of rap pioneers like Arrested Development, Black Sheep, Common, Queen Latifah, The Pharcyde, and more. The show was a success, so it’s returning in June 2025 with A Roots Picnic Experience: Class of ’95.

This time around, the lineup consists of acts that had their biggest breakouts in the middle of hip-hop’s golden decade, with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, DJ Quik, E-40, Goodie Mob, Havoc of Mobb Deep, Lil’ Kim, Raekwon, and Redman & Method Man all billed to take the stage, backed — as always — by The Roots and Black Thought. As for why they picked 1995 as the focus year, Questlove explains in the press release:

1995 was our true arrival. Nineteen eighty-seven was the Year of the Creative Adhesive, the year that tied together [Black Thought]’s world and my world in high school, and 1991 was the Year of the Green Light, the year we gave ourselves permission to take our resources and passion and pursue our dream. But 1995? That was the Year It All Came Together, the year when our first major release, Do You Want More?!!!??! was sent into the world. Hip-hop was an entirely new ballgame back then, on an entirely new playing field. Those were the days when there were still things like mainstream terrestrial radio, bloated video budgets, and creativity at both the regional and the global levels. Those were the days that produced classic album after classic album, unleashing countless new ideas about art. Those were the days when the world was our oyster. This is the story of those days

A Roots Picnic Experience: Class of ’95 takes place on 6/8/2025. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, December 11, at 10 am PT at hollywoodbowl.com.

DJ Quik Admits He Cried During Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” Show

DJ Quik is a Hall of Fame artist. He’s a G-funk pioneer and a production wizard. He’s also a proud Los Angeles native. Quik was absolutely blown away by Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” concert on Juneteenth, despite not being present. He praised K. Dot during a recent interview with AllHipHop. He also admitted, though, that watching the “Pop Out” show was a bittersweet experience. So bittersweet, in fact, that he claims that he actually cried while it was happening.

DJ Quik’s absence was not by design. The rapper would have attended, but he was on tour with fellow West Coast stars Problem and Snoop Dogg. The trio tried to chart a flight back to LA to attend, but Quik said that it proved to be a logistical nightmare. “Snoop tried to fly us back for the Pop Out,” he told the outlet. “He tried to charter a jet and it didn’t work out logistically because we would have missed our show… But we sat there steaming. I was steaming.” The reason Quick was steaming was two-fold. One, he was missing the “Pop Out” show. Two, and perhaps most ironically, he was stranded in Canada, the home of Kendrick’s enemy: Drake.

DJ Quik Was Forced To Watch The Show In Canada

These two things in tandem proved to be too much for DJ Quik. He shed tears of happiness over what Lamar did, but also tears of sadness given his circumstances. “I was knee deep in Canada when all that unity happened,” he noted. “I cried myself to sleep that night in the dumb-a*s Hilton hotel looking at you guys… started hating. What did I tell you?” Quik wasn’t the only who regretted missing the show, though. Snoop Dogg, who appeared on Lamar’s classic album To Pimp a Butterfly, raved about the concert on social media.

“Sending a big shout out to K. Dot and all the homies from the West that stood together unified,” he told his followers. The IG video was recorded in the same Canada hotel that a bereft DJ Quik fell asleep in the day prior. Still, Snoop kept it positive. “That was beautiful,” he asserted. “That was fun to watch. Beautiful to see all my peoples come together. And K. Dot – you are the King of the West.” A sentiment that DJ Quik would likely agree with.

JasonMartin And DJ Quik Make Magic On New Album “CHUPACABRA”

JasonMartin and DJ Quik are as Cali as it gets. They may come from different generations, but they shared a love for G-funk and smooth, feel-good music to play in the car. It doesn’t hurt that Quik is a literal G-funk pioneer. A good match on paper doesn’t always meet the results live up to the hype, but JasonMartin and DJ Quik arguably surpass expectations. They create an album that feels familiar and smooth, while at the same time distinct from their solo material. CHUPACABRA might be one of the top West Coast albums of 2024.

Part of the reason CHUPACABRA is so listenable is the musicality. The music is funky, unpredictable, and more experimental than one might expect. “CHUPA’S GROOVE” is a perfect example. It’s an instrumental passage with a bubbly bassline from Thundercat. It transcends rap conventions, yet feels right at home next to verses from Larry June and Bun B. The latter sounds excellent over the synth-heavy “Since I Was Lil.” There are too many guest verses to sift through here, but rest assured that everybody brings their A-game on CHUPACABRA. Ab-Soul is head-spinningly cool on “SOUL CIRCUS”, and CeeLo brings the grit of a classic soul sample on “DITTO.” Try to find a flaw on CHUPACABRA, and you’ll be looking for a long time.

JasonMartin & DJ Quik Slow Things Down On Dom Kennedy-Assisted “MONEY, CARS & GUNS”

JasonMartin and DJ Quik have an exciting album coming very soon called CHUPACABRA. This rapper/producer project will be available on June 14 and Martin, formerly known as Problem, is very excited for what they have coming. “This moment will be the legendary. The album we crafted together, with the help of @jayworthy142, will restore the feeling that’s been missing from California music as a whole. Everything from the production to the features were created in 30 days. This isn’t about art. This isn’t about numbers. This is about two Compton powerhouses joining forces one more time to give the city some fire a** music!!”. JasonMartin is certainly right, because “MONEY, CARS & GUNS” is just that.

This the sixth promotional track from CHUPACABRA, and it is looking like one of the shortest tracks from it. On “MONEY, CARS & GUNS”, JasonMartin actually does not rap at all. In fact, the feature, which is Dom Kennedy, dominates the 2:05 track all the way through. He brings a cool and smooth flow to this jazzy, summertime-like instrumental. There is a cool moment at the beginning where Quik starts off with a more up-tempo version of the beat and Dom asks him to slow things down. He corresponds and, in the visualizer below, the video replicates this by playing at a faster speed, before going back to normal. We cannot wait for what Jason and DJ Quik have in store, and we will not have to wait much longer.

JasonMartin & DJ Quik Deliver Fire Posse Cut “SINCE I WAS A LIL” With Jay Worthy, Curren$y, & Bun B

JasonMartin — who used to be referred to as Problem — is back with a highly anticipated single for an equally awaited project. The Compton, California rapper is not alone on this cut either. Legendary producer DJ Quik, along with Jay Worthy, Curren$y, and Bun B are also in on the fun. This latest song from JasonMartin is called “SINCE I WAS A LIL” and it is the second offering from CHUPACABRA. That is the alleged title of what will be a collaborative effort between the Jason and DJ Quik.

The veteran West Coast MC announced that this tape would be coming a few weeks ago on his Instagram in a lengthy monologue format. He explains that this is going to be one for the books and a project that fill a void that has been open for some time, Jason feels. “This moment will be the legendary. The album we crafted together, with the help of @jayworthy142 , will restore the feeling that’s been missing from California music as a whole.”

Jason continues, “Everything from the production to the features were created in 30 days. This isn’t about art. This isn’t about numbers. This is about two Compton powerhouses joining forces one more time to give the city some fire ass music!!”. The duo already released one cut from CHUPACABRA already just about a week ago called “GURBS & YOUNGS” with Jay Worthy and Larry June.

DJ Quik And Problem Are Reuniting For New Album “Chupacabra”

DJ Quik and Problem are West Coast titans from different time periods. Quik represents the G-funk heyday of the 1990s, while Problem rose to fame during the 2010s with scene-stealing guest verses. They bring different strengths to the table as rappers (and Quik as producer), but also they compliment each other in a lot of ways. It’s not surprising that Quik and Problem have announced plans for a brand new album called Chupacabra. They already linked up for the 2017 release Rosecrans, after all. A new album is exciting because it will allow them to build on their established chemistry and hone in on what they do best.

Quik and Problem announced the album on Friday, April 19. They have yet to share a release date, but they did treat fans to a brand new single called “Workout.” The single features guest verses from West Coast luminary Rodney-O, and sees the duo spit bars about self-improvement and style. “Do ya thing in the mirror and express yourself,” Problem asserts. “We all make mistakes, correct yourself/ If ya don’t like their style then dress yourself.” Lil Jon is also featured on the track, adding to its throwback energy.

Problem discussed his working relationship with Quik during an interview with Red Bull Academy. He said he was shocked to realize that Quik felt over the hill when they made Rosecrans. “[Quik] thought nobody was f**king with him, which is crazy to me,” Problem revealed. “People just want to go with the new, and they don’t understand there’s no new without that. We need to do this a whole lot more. We really need to show the world how this s**t really go.”

DJ Quik and Problem had busy years planned before they announced Chupacabra. The former is going to be an opener on Snoop Dogg’s Cali to Canada tour, which runs throughout the summer and will see him share a bill with Warren G. Quik has been extremely quiet on the music front this decade, as his last joint album was Rosecrans and his last solo album was The Midnight Life in 2014.

Between the tour and Chupacabra, 2024 is shaping up to be a comeback year for Quik. Problem has been much busier in the years since Rosecrans dropped. He released two studio albums, I Owe Myself and A Compton Story, in 2023 alone.

Legacy West Coast acts JasonMartin FKA Problem and DJ Quik have announced an upcoming highly anticipated joint album out later this year via EMPIRE called Chupacabra. Today, they share the first single “Workout” featuring Lil Jon and Rodney O which is a high tempo and motivational record for those looking for a burst of energy. To commemorate the release and theme of the song, the artists have partnered with ESPN to sync the record throughout the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

West Coast rapper JasonMartin, head of 50Million and Coffee & Kush, got his start behind the scenes writing music for and with Snoop Dogg, Terrace Martin, and more. He began issuing mixtapes and projects from his debut in the early 2000s and went from a staple in underground to widely known radio mix show favorite in 2013 with breakout single “Like Whaaat”. The track then got an official release after the virality when Problem’s debut EP, Understand Me, appeared on Diamond Lane before the end of 2013. He continued to make the leap to the mainstream in 2017 with Selfish and the Rosecrans EP – the latter a collaborative effort with DJ Quik. He quickly followed up with 2018’s S2 before kicking off the 2020s in a big way with a pair of full-lengths, Coffee & Kush, Vol. 1 and 2. More recently, he shared A Compton Story project and short film to widespread acclaim.

The legendary DJ Quik’s last full length effort was the aforementioned Rosecrans EP and now the duo are coming back together for another joint album. The rapper/producer is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in rap since his early-’90s debut and championed the G funk sound for artists and proteges to follow. He’s got multiple Billboard chart topping records and RIAA-Gold and Platinum certifications under his belt. His production credits span from Tony! Toni! Toné!’s “Let’s Get Down” – a Top 30 pop hit to collaborations with Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, and more.

Stay tuned for more info leading up to Chupacabra stream “Workout”. Catch Problem on his Problem Vs Jason Tour through June 6 culminating in Los Angeles and Quik on Snoop Dogg’s The Cali to Canada Tour.

Snoop Dogg Announces Star-Studded “Cali To Canada” Tour In 2024

Snoop Dogg is a busy man. He’s been one of the hardest working figures in hip-hop history since he arrived on the scene, and he’s going to maintain his packed schedule with an upcoming tour in Canada. Snoop announced the tour on his Instagram, which will bear the catchy title of the “Cali to Canada Tour.” To really hammer the point home, the Doggfather is wearing a maple leaf hockey jersey on the poster. Snoop’s opening acts will be fellow west coast legends DJ Quik and Warren G.

The tour will span several Canadian cities, including Toronto, Calgary, Quebec City and Montreal. This is not the first time Snoop has toured the Sunshine Province, as he went on a joint tour with Wiz Khalifa in summer 2023. What makes the “Cali to Canada Tour” different, however, is the emphasis on cities in the rural Prairie province. There will be 11 dates in total, starting with Halifax on June 3 and ending with Vancouver on June 25.

It’s a great time to book tickets to a Snoop show. The rapper is experiencing a career renaissance between the 30th anniversary of his album Doggystyle and the anticipation for his upcoming album with Dr. Dre, Missionary. Snoop and Dre are selling Missionary as a spiritual sequel to Doggystyle, as evidenced by its personnel and suggestive album title. Snoop talked about the recording process for Missionary during an appearance on All the Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. He praised Dre for challenging him as a rapper, and bringing out the “grown” side of his songwriting.

Tickets for the “Cali to Canada Tour” go on sale at 10 am on Friday, April 5th. The presale for the tickets kicks off on Thursday, April 4th, with additional pre-sale options throughout the week. Snoop also gave fans a code (“CALI2CANADA”) that will expedite the ticket buying process on sites like Ticketmaster. If you don’t get to see Snoop in Canada, the rapper will also be performing at the Lovers & Friends festival. The festival will be held in Las Vegas on May 4, and tickets are currently available.
