DJ Quik And Problem Are Reuniting For New Album “Chupacabra”

DJ Quik and Problem are West Coast titans from different time periods. Quik represents the G-funk heyday of the 1990s, while Problem rose to fame during the 2010s with scene-stealing guest verses. They bring different strengths to the table as rappers (and Quik as producer), but also they compliment each other in a lot of ways. It’s not surprising that Quik and Problem have announced plans for a brand new album called Chupacabra. They already linked up for the 2017 release Rosecrans, after all. A new album is exciting because it will allow them to build on their established chemistry and hone in on what they do best.

Quik and Problem announced the album on Friday, April 19. They have yet to share a release date, but they did treat fans to a brand new single called “Workout.” The single features guest verses from West Coast luminary Rodney-O, and sees the duo spit bars about self-improvement and style. “Do ya thing in the mirror and express yourself,” Problem asserts. “We all make mistakes, correct yourself/ If ya don’t like their style then dress yourself.” Lil Jon is also featured on the track, adding to its throwback energy.

Problem discussed his working relationship with Quik during an interview with Red Bull Academy. He said he was shocked to realize that Quik felt over the hill when they made Rosecrans. “[Quik] thought nobody was f**king with him, which is crazy to me,” Problem revealed. “People just want to go with the new, and they don’t understand there’s no new without that. We need to do this a whole lot more. We really need to show the world how this s**t really go.”

DJ Quik and Problem had busy years planned before they announced Chupacabra. The former is going to be an opener on Snoop Dogg’s Cali to Canada tour, which runs throughout the summer and will see him share a bill with Warren G. Quik has been extremely quiet on the music front this decade, as his last joint album was Rosecrans and his last solo album was The Midnight Life in 2014.

Between the tour and Chupacabra, 2024 is shaping up to be a comeback year for Quik. Problem has been much busier in the years since Rosecrans dropped. He released two studio albums, I Owe Myself and A Compton Story, in 2023 alone.

Snoop Dogg Announces Star-Studded “Cali To Canada” Tour In 2024

Snoop Dogg is a busy man. He’s been one of the hardest working figures in hip-hop history since he arrived on the scene, and he’s going to maintain his packed schedule with an upcoming tour in Canada. Snoop announced the tour on his Instagram, which will bear the catchy title of the “Cali to Canada Tour.” To really hammer the point home, the Doggfather is wearing a maple leaf hockey jersey on the poster. Snoop’s opening acts will be fellow west coast legends DJ Quik and Warren G.

The tour will span several Canadian cities, including Toronto, Calgary, Quebec City and Montreal. This is not the first time Snoop has toured the Sunshine Province, as he went on a joint tour with Wiz Khalifa in summer 2023. What makes the “Cali to Canada Tour” different, however, is the emphasis on cities in the rural Prairie province. There will be 11 dates in total, starting with Halifax on June 3 and ending with Vancouver on June 25.

It’s a great time to book tickets to a Snoop show. The rapper is experiencing a career renaissance between the 30th anniversary of his album Doggystyle and the anticipation for his upcoming album with Dr. Dre, Missionary. Snoop and Dre are selling Missionary as a spiritual sequel to Doggystyle, as evidenced by its personnel and suggestive album title. Snoop talked about the recording process for Missionary during an appearance on All the Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. He praised Dre for challenging him as a rapper, and bringing out the “grown” side of his songwriting.

Tickets for the “Cali to Canada Tour” go on sale at 10 am on Friday, April 5th. The presale for the tickets kicks off on Thursday, April 4th, with additional pre-sale options throughout the week. Snoop also gave fans a code (“CALI2CANADA”) that will expedite the ticket buying process on sites like Ticketmaster. If you don’t get to see Snoop in Canada, the rapper will also be performing at the Lovers & Friends festival. The festival will be held in Las Vegas on May 4, and tickets are currently available.

Happy 54th Birthday To West Coast Legend DJ Quik!

On this day in Hip-Hop history, legendary west coast DJ, rapper, and producer DJ Quik was born in 1970.

David Marvin Blake, a.k.a. DJ Quik, was born in Pomona, California, and shortly after relocated to Compton, California. His love for music began at a very young age, and by age 12, he could already play several instruments. Quik jumpstarted his path to fame by selling mixtapes he made with the turntable he received while still in school. Through self-promotion, his fame began to rise, and he started to DJ and host events in Southern California.

Whether due to knowledge of his future success or lack of interest, Quik dropped out of high school in the 11th grade. Shortly after, he suffered homelessness when his family home was taken away in foreclosure. There’s little information about what happened during DJ Quik’s life, but in 1990, everything changed.

DJ Quik had created so much of a buzz on the streets by selling tapes and making appearances at parties and events he gained the attention of local record labels Ruthless Records and Profile Records. Despite a one million dollar offer from Eazy E, Quik signed with Profile.

On February 12, 1991, DJ Quik released his debut album, Quik Is the Name, which debuted at #29 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it would peak, and sold 50,000 copies in its first week. The album hosted hit singles “Born and Raised in Compton” and “Tonite.” after about four years, the album was certified platinum by the RIAA and had to date, sold 1,068,203 copies. After his debut success, Quik produced eight more solo studio albums and a collaborative album with rapper Kurupt called Blaqkout in 2009.

Outside of music, DJ Quik has made appearances as an actor on popular TV shows: Method and Red, Entourage, and Everybody Hates Chris. His career is one of the more influential ones on the West Coast. Quik was an instrumental part of the G-Funk sound and helped it to gain popularity early in the rap world. Countless rappers, producers, and DJs alike have noted their influence by DJ Quik, and if you ride around SoCal today, there’s no doubt you can hear one of his hits playing on someone’s stereo. If you don’t already listen daily, take some time today to appreciate the career of one of the West Coast’s OGs.

Today in Hip-Hop History: DJ Quik Dropped Debut Album ‘Quik Is The Name’ 32 Years Ago

Released on Profile Records during a time when their roster consisted of righteous rhymers like King Sun and Poor Righteous Teachers, Quik was pioneering in helping to usher in the “gangsta rap” sound on a mainstream scale in the early 90s and labels were just beginning to shift their marketing dollars towards this sub-genre of Hip-Hop.

With the help of producers Courtney Branch, Greg Jessie and Tracy Kendrick, Quik managed to produce a rap classic that sold 50,000 in its first week with only a $30,000 budget for production. Recorded in Westlake Recording Studio in Los Angeles, the same spot where Michael Jackson’s epic Thriller masterpiece was created, Quik and crew finished up the album in 17 days.

The album’s lead single, “Born And Raised In Compton,” climbed to Number 6 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs, while tracks like “Tonite,” “Deep” and the album’s title track solidified the funk sound that later saturated West Coast Hip Hop music.

Salute to the Big Homie for laying down this pioneering project that will forever be considered one of the Top 100 Albums in Hip-Hop!
