IDK And Denzel Curry Keep Their Heads On A Swivel On The Groovy ‘Dog Food’

After DMV rapper IDK dropped his stellar debut album Is He Real? at the end of 2019, fans had to wait a little over a year to receive his next body of work, that being U See 4 Yourself. The project delivered 17 songs with features from Young Thug, Offset, Lucky Daye, Sir, T-Pain, Rico Nasty, MF DOOM, Westside Gunn, Jay Electronica, and more. Less than a year after he released U See 4 Yourself, IDK is already gearing up to share his third body of work. He previously announced that it would be titled Simple, and ahead of its release, he shares its third single.

IDK calls on Denzel Curry for their new collaboration, “Dog Food.” It’s an effort that captures the duo with their heads on a swivel as danger lurks around the corner in their neighborhood. The new song marks IDK and Denzel’s fifth track together following “No Wave,” “Once Upon A Time (Freestyle),” “Bulletproof,” and “Uh Huh.” The track also follows IDK’s previous single, “Taco,” which he released earlier this month. Both “Taco” and “Dog Food” are produced by Kaytranada, who IDK previously said would handle the production on Simple. Additionally, IDK also revealed that Simple would arrive on May 6.

You can listen to “Dog Food” in the video above.

Simple is out 5/6 via Clue and Warner Records.

Sampa The Great Returns With The Surreal ‘Lane’ Video Featuring Denzel Curry

Zambian-Australian rapper/songwriter Sampa The Great returned this week after a three-year hiatus with “Lane,” her first new song since her 2019 debut album, The Return. The dreamy new song receives an assist from Denzel Curry, who contributes a searing verse, and Rochelle Rhembard and Imraan Christian, who direct the surreal music video. The video finds Sampa meditating in a picturesque grotto and features child versions of the two rappers running around with rose-shooting rifles. If you pay close attention, you’ll notice that the face on Sampa’s top appears to be “alive,” as well.

In a press release, Sampa explains the concept behind the song: “We’re not going to stay in one lane, we’re going to create multiple ones,” she says. “My truest self encourages me to explore different lanes, and go beyond what I think I know of myself.”

While the eclectic and underrated artist has been out of the limelight for the past two years, she hasn’t been idle. During the pandemic, she moved back to Zambia, where she spent the last two years writing and recording her upcoming album, which is due later this year via Loma Vista. Throughout that time, she performed virtually for festivals like Afropunk and the Roots Picnic, while her music was heard in nationwide commercials for Ikea and Truly Hard Seltzer. She recently made her Coachella debut, kicking off a stateside festival run that will include Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and Pickathon.

Denzel Curry And T-Pain Link Up For The Smoky, Jazz Bounce Of ‘Troubles’

Last week, Denzel Curry announced that his new album, Melt My Eyez, See Your Future, would be coming out this Friday, March 25th. The tracklist also revealed a loaded list of guest features, including 454, 6lack, Bridget Perez, Jasiah, JID, Rico Nasty, Robert Glasper, Saul Williams, Slowthai, and T-Pain. Meanwhile, the album’s producers are Cardo, DJ Khalil, Dot Da Genius, Jpegmafia, Kal Banx, Karriem Riggins, Kenny Beats, and Thundercat. Loaded, right?

As we gear up for the full release later this week, Curry has shared the T-Pain collaboration track, “Troubles,” along with an accompanying video. The clip begins with Curry on crutches, standing on stage at a jazz cabaret. He spits bars over a sleek snare drum beat as surrealist footage gets spliced in. T-Pain joins him with his glorious auto-tuned vocals and the track reaches a smoky jazz bounce. They sync up on the hook, rapping, “Got some troubles that these drugs can’t fix, we might struggle because life’s a b*tch, and you happy when your ass get rich.”

The distinct aesthetic of “Troubles” speaks to what Curry has described in a statement about the overall message of Melt My Eyez, See Your Future:

“I like traditional hip hop, I like drum and bass, I like trap, I like poetry, so a lot of that is going to be interwoven in this album including jazz and a lot of genres that I came up on as a kid and just being in my parents’ house. This album is made up of everything that I couldn’t give you on TA13OO or Imperial because I was going through depression anger issues.”

Denzel Curry Shares The Release Date And Tracklist For ‘Melt My Eyez, See Your Future’

After teasing his new album Melt My Eyez, See Your Future with a Spaghetti Western-themed trailer, the space Western-styled video for “Walkin,” and the samurai flick homage “Zatoichi,” Denzel Curry has finally revealed the album’s anticipated release date. Set for release March 25, Melt My Eyez, See Your Future will feature appearances from 454, 6lack, Bridget Perez, Jasiah, JID, Rico Nasty, Robert Glasper, Saul Williams, Slowthai, and T-Pain. The album’s production team includes Cardo, DJ Khalil, Dot Da Genius, Jpegmafia, Kal Banx, Karriem Riggins, Kenny Beats, and Thundercat.

In a press release announcing the album’s release date, Curry detailed the album’s production process and aesthetics. “I like traditional hip hop, I like drum and bass, I like trap, I like poetry, so a lot of that is going to be interwoven in this album including jazz and a lot of genres that I came up on as a kid and just being in my parents’ house,” he said. “This album is made up of everything that I couldn’t give you on TA13OO or Imperial because I was going through depression anger issues.”

To promote the album, Curry is set to launch a world tour beginning in Denver, Colorado on April 1 and ending the month in Glasgow, United Kingdom. After a month-long swing through Europe, he’ll return to the US just in time for Governor’s Ball in New York, then complete the second leg of his US tour, wrapping up July 1 in Phoenix, Arizona.
