Donald Glover, known as rapper Childish Gambino, told actress Laverne Cox during the Golden Globes red carpet that he’s been working on new music. But seemed tight-lipped about when it would release. Actor and musician Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, shared he has been making new music. Childish Gambino’s Comeback Coming SoonThe creator […]
For years, Donald Glover worked to keep his music work distinct from his other endeavors thanks to the Childish Gambino persona. However, now that he’s more successful in both worlds than probably even he dreamed, the line has become blurred and he’s hinted at retiring the internet-generated name, even going as far as having a farewell show in Los Angeles a few years ago. While he’s since hinted at resurrecting the name, this week, he gave the first outright confirmation that Childish Gambino is coming back.
While on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards last night (Tuesday, January 10), Glover told E! News’ correspondent Laverne Cox, “I’m making music right now, I love it. I’m actually working, I’m in the studio. I’ve been bringing people in, like secret people, working on little things. But I just been, you know, making it for fun right now. But soon something will happen, I promise. Something will happen.” Regarding the past comments he’d made about retiring his alter ego, he admitted, “You don’t have to worry about that … He’ll be back.”
It’s likely that he’s backtracking now due to an abundance of free time now that his critically acclaimed show Atlanta has come to an end. And while he’s likely still got plenty to do while developing projects like a Mr. And Mrs. Smith series and playing Hypno Hustler in a Spider-Man spinoff, it’s clear the music bug has bitten him all over again. Hopefully, we’ll see what he’s been working on soon enough.
There was a time when it was believed we were at the end of Childish Gambino. Following the 2016 release of Donald Glover’s acclaimed Awaken, My Love!, the multihyphenate entertainer suggested he was retiring his musical persona. However, it looks like he’s had a change of heart because he switched things up on the Golden Globes red carpet.
“No, that was out in the ethos,” Glover told Laverne Cox as she interviewed him for E! “You don’t have to worry about that. [Childish Gambino] be back. He’s here right now.”
“I’m making music right now,” he continued. “I love it. I’m actually working [on it]. I’m in the studio. I’ve been, like, bringing people in—like secret people. Like, working on little things. But I’ve just been, like, making it for fun for right now. But soon, something will happen I promise. Something will happen.”
In 2017, Glover suggested that he was ready to rid himself of his Childish Gambino music fame.
“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘Again?’” he shared at the time. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”
A year later, at the Grammys, he doubled down on possible retirement. Yet, in subsequent years, including 2022’s interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Glover revealed he had returned to making music. The singer looked like he was looking forward to sharing his new efforts. Still, he hasn’t given insight into any release dates.
Back in 2019, Janelle Monáe and Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) were both Coachella headliners. This fact was brought up during a recent lie detector test video from Vanity Fair, in which Monáe measured herself favorably against Glover.
In the video, Monáe was hooked up to the machine while Glass Onion co-star Kate Hudson asked questions. Hudson showed a photo of Glover, mentioned Coachella, and asked if Monáe has a problem with sharing the spotlight, to which Monáe said she doesn’t. Hudson then pointed out that Monáe and Glover are both multi-talented triple threats before asking Monáe if she thinks she’s the better “actress/singer/dancer” of the two. Monáe sighed and answered, “You know what, Childish? I love you, but I think yes. I mean, should I lie?”
Elsewhere during the interrogation, Hudson asked Monáe if she’s more “extra” than some celebrities. One of them was Lady Gaga and Monáe said, “I love her. I think… I actually don’t know. I actually don’t know, because I feel like when we started in the industry, kind of like close together, I was doing my version of extra and she was doing her version of extra. And I haven’t given up on my extra and I don’t think she’s given up on hers.”
Earlier this week, NBC Network celebrated the 74th Primetime Emmy Award Show. Five of its winners were Black women, making the moment monumental. Many of them are on the road to the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar & Tony Awards) status. The winners in the 74th Emmy Award show were announced on Monday evening at […]
Black Party‘s new album Hummingbird is out today, and he teamed up with Childish Gambino for the dreamy track “I Love You More Than You Know,” which comes with a soaring video drenched in sunlight. The video captures Black Party, real name Malik Flint, driving through the mountains, along with snippets of him with his family at a beach, all with a grainy texture that matches the lo-fi feeling of the song.
“I Love You More Than You Know” is more atmospherics and croons than it is rap, but Donald Glover’s flow offers some urgency to the otherwise languid song: “I love you more than you know / I never thought I’d see forty, I hope there’s forty to go / Might die tomorrow, who knows,” he raps.
When Glover was interviewed on Kimmel in March, he was asked if he was working on a new album to follow up 2020’s 3.15.20. He replied, “Uh, no,” before quickly indicating he was joking. He added, “I’m making a lot of music. I really love doing it. I’ve made a bunch of it. It’s just really about how to experience it at this point.”
