HER Is Officially Looking To Complete That EGOT With Her Broadway Show Opening This Month

Singer and actress Gabriella Wilson, better known as HER (but she should really consider going by her real name, already), told Entertainment Tonight in 2021 that she wanted to win an EGOT (one each from the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards) shortly after taking home an Oscar for her Judas And The Black Messiah track “Fight For You.” Then, last year, she picked up an Emmy for producing on Netflix’s We The People with the Obamas. This month, she’ll take an earnest swing for the final award, a Tony, with a producer credit on the upcoming Broadway show, Here Lies Love.

Co-written by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Here Lies Love follows a narrative centered on former Philippines first lady, Imelda Marcos. It’s fitting, then, that Wilson is also producing, as she proudly represents her Filipina heritage in her work, such as the designs on her dress in Disney’s Beauty And The Beast: A 30th Celebration. Should the show win a Tony Award next June, it’ll make her the youngest woman to ever achieve an EGOT by ten years; the current youngest woman is Jennifer Hudson, who was 38 when she won in 2021, becoming the 17th person overall, the third youngest person, and just the second Black woman to win ever. She was most recently succeeded by Viola Davis, the 18th person and third Black woman, last year.

HER shared a preview video of the show on her Instagram on Sunday, sharing the opening date, July 20. Check it out below.

Cordae Inches Closer To EGOT Status, Shares Letter From The Obamas

Raleigh, NC rapper Cordae shared a post on Instagram recently about inching closer to the EGOT club after his recent Emmy win. The post includes a photo of the rapper holding up a letter from the Obamas congratulating him on his win. He won his first Emmy in 2022 for Outstanding Short Form Program at the Children & Family Emmy Awards show. The post is captioned, “I thank God I won my first Emmy!” Cordae went on to write, “EGOT is on the way.” “S/O to the Obamas for the oop,” he added. It also features a close-up of the letter from the Obamas, dated January 11, 2023.

In the letter, the Obamas write “We are so proud to have worked with you on We The People.” It goes on to call the Emmy a “wonderful recognition of [his] hard work.” It cites the more important recognitions as “the young people who are a little smarter and a little more civically minded as a result” of his work. The Obamas thanked Cordae for his work on the show, saying “it means a lot to [them].” They go on to say they “hope [they] can continue to find ways to work together, […] whether it’s at Higher Ground, the Obama Foundation, or in [Cordae’s] endeavors.”

The Obamas Thank Cordae

Barack and Michelle Obama were both producers of We the People. On Uninterrupted’s “The Shop,” Cordae revealed how selective he can be when deciding what to record. He shared that he turns down “95% of everything.” The rapper said he was originally asked to record Maroon 5’s hit song, “Memories.” Cordae said he thought about it, wondering if it was too early in his career to make the move. He said he doesn’t regret the decision, because he “can’t ever lose that foundation because then [he’ll] lose the people.”

In March, Cordae’s collaboration with the shoe brand Puma was revealed. They released three unique pairs of shoes designed in part by Cordae. Later that month, Cordae’s girlfriend, tennis star, Naomi Osaka, shared photos of her baby bump. Having announced the pregnancy in January, the couple is expecting the birth of their first child together soon.

What Is An EGOT And What Does It Stand For?

Viola Davis recently became the 18th member to join the honorary EGOT club after she won a Grammy last weekend for the audiobook version of her memoir. However, some casual fans might be curious: What exactly is an EGOT?

First things first, the EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. For somebody to ‘EGOT,’ it means that person has to win (at least one) of each of those four awards. And it’s very difficult to do, but there are a ton of celebrities currently that are only one award shy of joining Davis.

There are also other special honors in the entertainment world. In addition to the EGOT, there is the ESOT — which swaps out someone not needing to win a Grammy but a Screen Actors Guild Award instead.

In this category, there are only ten winners so far. Davis is already one of them, as she achieved her ESOT in 2017.

Lastly, there is the prestigious PEGOT, which means all of the former EGOT winners would have had to win either a Peabody award or a Pulitzer.

There are only five people that have done so: Barbra Streisand, Mike Nichols, Rita Moreno (Peabody winners), Richard Rodgers, and Marvin Hamlisch (Pulitzer winners).

Who Is One Award Away From An EGOT?

After the Grammy Awards were held last weekend, Viola Davis made major headlines after she won an award for the audiobook of her memoir, Finding Me.

Davis, who is now the latest entry into the acclaimed EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) hall-of-fame, might have other fans wondering how many of their favorite celebs are just one more award shy away of joining her next.

Only 18 performers have achieved this feat, with Richard Rogers being the first to do so in 1962 per Variety. Since then, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes, Marvin Hamlisch, Robert Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, and more have entered the exclusive club.

Here is the full list of people that are currently alive and one award away from achieving an EGOT. (Hint: Some of the entries include surprising musicians.)

Viola Davis Earns EGOT With Grammy Win

Viola Davis has achieved the extremely rare EGOT status, meaning she’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She’s earned the honor with a win for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording. The Recording Academy awarded her for her performance of the audiobook for her memoir Finding Me. Davis accepted the award during the 2023 Grammys ceremony, Sunday.

“Oh, my god. I wrote this book to honor the six-year-old Viola. To honor her, her life, her joy, her trauma, everything,” Davis said, before adding, “It has just been such a journey. I just EGOT! Thank you, Harper Collins, Lavaille Lavette, you epitomize sister friend. And really, to everybody who was part of my story. And the best chapter yet, my loves: Julius, Genesis. You are my life, My joy. you are the best chapter in this book. Thank you.”

With the victory, Davis joins other EGOT winners John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Rodgers, Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, as well as Rita Moreno. She’s additionally just the third Black woman in history to achieve the honor. Davis won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for Fences. In 2015, she earned an Emmy for her leading role in How to Get Away with Murder. She also has Tony awards for King Hedley II as well as the Broadway production of Fences.

Davis previously admitted that winning an EGOT would be a “huge accomplishment” for her. She explained what it would mean to her during an interview in January.

“I feel this way, even though it’s probably a very dramatic statement on my part: I think that everybody wants their life to mean something. I believe in the Cherokee birth blessing, which is ‘May you live long enough to know why you were born.’ I do believe that you literally wanna blow a hole through this world in whatever way you can,” Davis explained, before elaborating, “A lot of people don’t know how to do that. A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do. Some have. But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”

Eminem, Adele, And The Other Musicians Who Just Need One More Award For An EGOT

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out this weekend and it was a big moment for some notable folks in the music industry: Adele, Eminem, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr all won awards, which puts them each just a Tony Award victory away from attaining the coveted EGOT status — meaning they’ve won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar (Academy Award), and Tony.

The Adele: One Night Only concert special won a total of five awards, as did the The Beatles: Get Back documentary, getting Adele, McCartney, and Starr their first Emmys. This year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show also got three awards, giving Eminem his first Emmy.

Those four artists now join a list of musicians who are just one win away from the EGOT, as they all already had Grammy and Oscar wins under their belts. Aside from the aforementioned, performers just missing a Tony include Cher, Common, producer/composer Ludwig Göransson, Randy Newman, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Barbra Streisand, and composer John Williams. Meanwhile, Oscar Hammerstein II, Elton John, and Stephen Sondheim are an Emmy shy of their EGOT. As for artists who are an Oscar shy, that list includes Quincy Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The short list of those who have gotten their EGOT already includes Richard Rodgers (who secured his in 1962), Helen Hayes (1977), Rita Moreno (1977), John Gielgud (1991), Audrey Hepburn (1994), Marvin Hamlisch (1995), Jonathan Tunick (1997), Mel Brooks (2001), Mike Nichols (2001), Whoopi Goldberg (2002), Scott Rudin (2012), Robert Lopez (2014), Andrew Lloyd Webber (2018), Tim Rice (2018), John Legend (2018), Alan Menken (2020), and Jennifer Hudson (2022).
