2024 BET Hip-Hop Awards Nominees: Megan Thee Stallion Leads The Pack

Today, the full list of nominees for the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards was finally unveiled. The awards ceremony will air on BET on October 15 of this year and will be taped earlier that month. Once again, Fat Joe will be taking over the responsibility of hosting. This will be the NYC icon’s third year in a row to do so, and fans can’t wait.

“Joe Crack is back for the 3-peat, night night baby,” he declared. “It’s been a dream to host the ‘BET Hip Hop Awards’ the past few years and I’m looking forward to taking things to the next level in Las Vegas. We’re going to be in a new city and location, but the excitement and entertainment at the awards will be even bigger than ever.”

BET Unveils 2024 Hip-Hop Awards Nominees

Leading the pack with the most nominations this year is none other than Megan Thee Stallion with 12. These include three nods in the Best Collaboration category, one for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, and more. This is no surprise, considering the major year she had with the release of her album Megan and her “Hot Girl Summer” tour. Coming in behind Meg with 11 nominations is Kendrick Lamar, who had a similarly huge year. His Drake diss tracks continue to top the charts months after their feud mostly fizzled out. He’s also in the running for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Video of the Year, and more.

Of course, behind Kendrick is Drake with eight nominations, followed by Cardi B, GloRilla, Metro Boomin, Nicki Minaj, and more. Check out the full list below. What do you think of this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards nominees? Who are you rooting for? Share your thoughts in the comments section and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Oscar De La Hoya Reveals That Jay-Z Lost A Risky Six-Figure Bet To Him

Jay-Z is a big sports fan, as evidenced these days by his infamous connection to the NFL and his role in their Super Bowl halftime shows. But the connection stretches much further back, and it’s not completely dominated by wins for the East Coast legend. Moreover, Oscar De La Hoya recently told Shannon Sharpe on his Club Shay Shay program that Hov lost a six-figure bet to him almost a decade ago, and paid it honorably. The boxing legend was promoting Canelo Alvarez in his November 2015 fight against Miguel Cotto, who benefitted from the Roc Nation boss’ financial backing… But not in the match.

“So we’re promoting Canelo at the time, Golden Boy, and [Jay-Z’s] promoting Cotto,” Oscar De La Hoya recalled. “So I said, ‘You know what? Why don’t place a bet here of $250,000? But it goes to charity.’ So Canelo wins, my charity wins the two-fifths, and sure enough he paid it on the spot. I think the next day, the check was in the bank. Jay-Z loves boxing, he knows his boxing. But he’s a guy who pays his bets.”

Oscar De La Hoya Recalls Him & Jay-Z’s 2015 Bet

However, there’s a bit of a conflicting report on the nature of this bet, as TMZ alleged back in 2015 that Jay-Z actually lost a $100,000 bet, not one for a quarter of a million. “Thanks to Jay-Z, thousands of patients at White Memorial Medical Center will also be winners,” Oscar De La Hoya remarked at the time. “I don’t imagine [he’s] excited about losing $100,000, but he can take some comfort in knowing that it’s going to a good cause.” As far as his recent exploits in the boxing world, Oscar is looking forward to a healthy Mike Tyson performance against Jake Paul.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z recently stirred up a storm thanks to his reclaiming of Dame Dash’s Reasonable Doubt shares. Well, not right now, as he would eventually earn this back from Dame in a couple of years. He’s not too happy about the situation at all, but it seems like his former co-boss is dead-set on getting his shares back. We’ll see what happens with that situation, and whether or not it will turn out to be a losing bet.

Biden Sits with BET to Address His Record with Black Americans

After delivering remarks at the NAACP’s National Convention, President Joe Biden sat down for a comprehensive interview with BET journalist Ed Gordon.

The discussion highlighted Biden’s achievements for Black Americans and the critical issues in the upcoming election. A significant portion of the conversation focused on the recent overturning of abortion rights, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to protecting reproductive freedoms. Biden underscored the importance of voter turnout and civic engagement in these challenges, calling on the community to unite in safeguarding their rights and shaping the nation’s future.

“The Supreme Court did it — Trump appointed [justices to the] Supreme Court with the expressed purpose of doing it — so that’s the way it works… They’re probably going to be two more appointments to the Court… Just imagine a Court if he has two more appointments on that — what that means forever.”

Drake Loses $300K After Betting On Canada In Copa America Game

The bad breaks continue for Drake. The bumps and bruises the rapper has taken in the music world have been well documented. In the sports world, however, he hasn’t fared much better. The 6 God bet $500K on the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, and lost. He lost another $500K on the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup. The Drake curse was already working overtime in 2024, and it’s struck again. The rapper lost another staggering amount of money on July 9.

Drake made his confidence in the Canadian soccer team clear the day before. He posted a betting stub on his Instagram Story, confirming that he’d taken betting odds of 9.6-to-1 that his team would triumph over Argentina in the Copa America game. He put down $300K, with potential winnings amounting to $2.88 million. Drake also couldn’t resist poking fun at Argentina’s star, Lionel Messi. “This could get Messi,” he wrote over his ticket. One would assume he wasn’t in a joking mood after Canada lost to Argentina by a score of 2-0.

Drake Has Lost Multiple Sports Bets In 2024

Drake has been an avid supporter of Canadian soccer for years. He included footage of soccer being played in the music video for “Started from the Bottom” in 2013. More recently, the rapper hyped up the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be held in his hometown of Toronto. “Canada as a whole, we have an incredible melting pot,” he told FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “But in Toronto, there are just so many different cultural experiences. So when the world comes, it’s going to be beautiful.” He also claimed that there was “no passion like football passion.”

The Drake curse has been difficult for the rapper to shed in recent years. The storybook run that the Toronto Raptors had in 2019 quelled some of the criticisms surrounding Drake, but the severe losses he’s taken on major sporting events in 2024 has brought the “curse” talk back with a vengeance. It doesn’t help that Kendrick Lamar accused the rapper of having gambling problems on his scathing “Meet the Grahams” diss. “You got gamblin’ problems, drinkin’ problems, pill-poppin’ and spendin’ problems,” Lamar raps. “Bad with money.”

Beyonce Co-Signs Teyana Taylor And Victoria Monet’s BET Tribute

Usher was the main focus of the BET Awards. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award, and several of the musical performances throughout the ceremony were covers of his classic songs. Teyana Taylor and Victoria Monet teamed up for a cover of Usher’s “Bad Girl,” and promptly electrified the crowd. The performance was widely praised by fans online. But the biggest co-sign came from an unlikely source: Beyonce.

Queen Bey shared clips from the performance on her Instagram Story. It makes sense, once you consider the fact that Beyonce and Usher performed “Bad Girl” together on the Truth Tour in 2004. Taylor and Monet used the same exact choreography as their predecessor, turning in a stellar cover. However, neither artist could maintain their composure when they realized Beyonce reposted them. “Everything she saidddd,” Teyana Taylor wrote on her IG Story. “Bihhhhh I’m speechless. & DATS ON QUEEN BEYYYYYYYYYYYY, I’m GAGGGGINGGGGGGGI!!!!”

Beyonce’s Posts Shocked Taylor And Monet

Victoria Monet was similarly blown away by the co-sign. She joined her collaborator Taylor in praising Beyonce for her shout-out. “OOOOH MYYYY GOD!!!!! na I AM SCREAMING!! WHATTTT,” she wrote in yet another IG Story. “CAN NOT GRASP AIR I AM UNWELL HOLY SH*T I did not expect to pass out today! GAGGEDD…completely. @beyonce WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!! THE ORIGINAL BAD GYAL I will forever honor you.” She even tagged Taylor add added: “WTFFFF PINCH ME.”

The performance by Taylor and Monet is even more impressive considering the time constraints they were under. In a separate post, Teyana Taylor revealed that she and Monet had less than 48 hours to get together and perfect the “Bad Girl” choreography. “We don’t regret one moment of it,” she asserted. “We had an assignment that needed to be OVERstood for one of the GOATS… We’d do it all over again and wouldn’t change a thing.” Taylor and Monet received praise from two GOATs that night. They have nothing to change.

BET Apologizes To Usher For An ‘Audio Malfunction’ During His Heavily Censored Lifetime Achievement Award Speech

usher speech

Usher won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 BET Awards on Sunday, but his speech was so heavily edited that viewers watching at home weren’t able to make out what the “Confessions Part II” singer was saying. BET has since apologized for what a spokesperson called an “audio malfunction.”

“Celebrating global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and having him accept his award with a heartfelt speech was an honor,” the spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “Due to an audio malfunction during the live telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted. We extend our sincere apologies to Usher as we couldn’t be more grateful for his participation in culture’s biggest night. Fans can catch his full uninterrupted speech across BET platforms and tonight’s encore on BET.”

As for the contents of his roughly 13-minute speech, Usher talked a lot about forgiveness.

“We’ve got to be willing to forgive. We’ve got to be willing to be open,” he said. “I’m telling you, you’re standing before a man who had to forgive a man who never showed up ever. And look what I made with it. Look what I was able to ‘usher’ in. But that’s what’s real. That’s what makes us human. That’s what makes us women and men.” Let’s see if he forgives BET.

You can watch the full (uncensored) speech below.

What Did Usher Say In His BET Awards Speech?

usher bet awards
Getty Image

If you watched last night’s BET Awards, you probably have a lot of questions about choices the show made with regard to Usher’s Lifetime Achievement Award honor, but one is likely foremost among them — what did he say that made the TV censors go so berserk?

In case you didn’t see it, shortly after taking the stage to begin his speech, Usher used some colorful language while speaking about his absentee father — including a few of George Carlin’s infamous “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television.” From that point on, the S&P watchdogs at BET — already pretty infamously touchy for a network that also aired the “Tip Drill” video (but only well after midnight) — leaned pretty heavily on the mute button, resulting in stretches of silence up to a few minutes long, just in case. So, just what did Usher say during his speech, and was it really all that bad?

Fortunately, thanks to fans in attendance posting the unedited speech online, we can hear it in full. In truth, Usher spent most of the speech talking about being motivated by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who presented his award. The salty language continued, but there was nothing conspiratorial, just a 45-year-old superstar enjoying his moment and talking his sh*t. You can check out the speech below.

Drake Loses Another $500K Thanks To The Stanley Cup Finals

Drake is going through it. The rapper who was dubbed the artist of the 2010s has fallen on hard times in 2024. Former collaborators turned against him and/or dissed him. Kendrick Lamar effectively gave him a bigger rap battle loss than Pusha T. He then went on to celebrate his victory with an already legendary concert on Juneteeth. The dust hasn’t settled on the anti-Drake show, and the rapper has already fallen victim to another unflattering incident. He just lost $1 million betting on the Stanley Cup finals.

The Florida Panthers triumphed over the Edmonton Oilers on June 24. Being the supportive Canadian that he is, Drake put down a bet on the Oilers. The rapper posted the betting stub for the Stanley Cup Finals on June 6, confirming its value of $500K. To make matters worse, it was one of two $500K bets the rapper made that day. He also put down $500K for the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA finals, which means he lost a staggering $1 million in the last two weeks. The X Twitter account Dallas Nation reposted the betting stubs with a claim that the “Drake curse” is alive and well.

Drake Lost A Combined $1 Million On Sports Bets In June

The “Drake curse” has been a talking point for over a decade. The rapper was quickly deemed back luck to any sports team that he took an interest in. The concept gained so much traction, in fact, that Drake made joke about it during the Toronto Raptors’ NBA title run in 2019. After the Raptors beat the Orlando Magic to advance to the second round, Drake sarcastically asked journalists: “You want me to talk about the curse or you guys good?”

Drake’s betting habits has made for humorous fodder. The rapper’s habits was presented in a more sinister light on the Kendrick Lamar diss, “Meet the Grahams,” however. On the song, Lamar presented Drake’s betting as an addiction, and the cause of unreported money problems. “Thirty-seven, but you showin’ up as a seven-year-old,” Lamar raps. “You got gamblin’ problems, drinkin’ problems, pill-poppin’ and spendin’ problems. Bad with money…” This latest loss isn’t going to help refute Lamar’s claim.
