The many celebrities who took home an Academy Award on Sunday (March 12) night were surely happy with their win. Still, that obviously doesn’t mean the rest of the world was as enthused for them. Each and every ceremony brings with it a collection of snubs – prizes given to nominees who arguably deserve them less than their contemporaries, usually for reasons related to race and socioeconomic background. This year, it seems as though the internet is most enraged about Angela Bassett’s loss after her emotional performance in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The 64-year-old was up against Hong Chau (The Whale), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu – the latter two starring in Everything Everywhere All at Once – in the Best Supporting Actress category. Ultimately, it was the Freaky Friday actress who took home the Oscar, and cameras caught an obviously upset expression on Bassett’s face when the news was announced.
Angela Bassett Loses “Best Supporting Actress” to Jamie Lee Curtis
In the hours since the Academy Awards aired, thousands have tweets have been shared, expressing frustration over Bassett’s loss. Fans of the American Horror Story starlet have been actively rooting for her to win, especially considering she’s been snubbed before in the past. Days before the ceremony took place, SZA ranted about the Hollywood icon’s lack of recognition on her Twitter page. “Realizing Angela Bassett doesn’t already have an Oscar [makes] me wanna knock shit over,” she said.
Many other users have made it clear they feel the same way as the Ctrl singer. “Literally it’s sick asf,” someone replied to SZA’s post. “Everyone who voted for Jamie Lee Curtis over Angela Bassett and Stephanie Hsu needs to sleep with one eye open,” another person joked. The 2023 Oscars have come and gone, but we’re not ready to quit gushing over last evening’s looks quite yet. Many of Hollywood’s most elite were attending the prestigious ceremony on Sunday (March 12) night, dressed in their very best. Of course, the various after-parties are where even more fashionistas came out to play, showing off their designer duds. One of the most popular functions to check out after the award show is the annual Vanity Fair bash, which Ciara broke several necks at with her bold gown.
The mother of three and her husband Russell Wilson were lucky enough to get on the guest list, and they accordingly made sure all eyes were on them. For her part, Ciara markedly left little to the imagination in a Dundas sheer netted down, worn over a tiny black thong and with long. Velvet gloves in the same colour also covered most of her arms. Her heels came from Santoni, and her dark hair was chopped into a chic bob, perfectly framing her beautifully beat face.
Ciara’s Near-Naked Dress
Following a glamorous night out on the town with her man by her side, the “Jump” hitmaker is doing her best to relive it again today (March 13). On Monday morning, Ciara uploaded a Reel to her Instagram feed captioned, “Oscar Nights,” and soundtracked to M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls.” Throughout various clips and photos, we see her posing in her nearly-naked gown, making sure to give the world a glimpse of her curvy cheeks.
In the midst of her thirst traps, the 37-year-old included a photo of her and Megan Thee Stallion taken at the event. The “Hot Girl Summer” hitmaker made her first appearance of 2023 last night, and clearly, friends like Ciara were more than happy to see her and her larger-than-life hair back in the public eye. See their sweet link-up for yourself below, and check back later for more pop culture news updates.
Is it time for another Megan Thee Stallion SZN? Her Hotties believe so, especially after the rapper made a grand return to the spotlight over the weekend. For months, sightings of the Traumazine hitmaker have been few and far between. She’s been laying low since the verdict was reached in the Tory Lanez trial, but it looks like we’re entering a new era for the Rap star. Megan looked stunning at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and hinted that new music was coming.
This look was Megan’s first time on the red carpet since December. She looked radiant in a Bach Mai custom gown while adorned in luxury diamond pieces, including a show-stopping ring. “The designer is from Houston, Texas! His name is Bach. He got me snatched tonight,” said Megan about Bach. There were also jokes about Beyoncé’s Renaissance world tour tickets. Megan kidded she wouldn’t reveal who gave her the passes but confirmed she wouldn’t miss it.
Megan Thee Stallion Is Back In Action
The interviewer joked about Megan having a direct line to the Knowles-Carters. She’s managed by Roc Nation, so it was no surprise the rapper would attend. “You know I called them directly!” said Megan with a laugh. “Beyoncé! Let me get a ticket!” Additionally, every year, Bey and Jay-Z host their exclusive Oscars party—and Megan revealed she was also invited to that. “You know Beyoncé is my auntie!”
The Houston Hottie added that she had to stop by the Vanity Fair event for a “quick one, two.” She added, “This is my first night out, and I’m here, and I’m ready.” So, is she working on music? “Oh, I am. New album, f*ck you hoes, bye!”
A Rough Season For Thee Stallion
Megan faced public ridicule for over two years after she alleged Tory Lanez shot her in the foot. What unraveled was unlike anything we’ve seen recently, as Lanez and his supporters openly targeted Megan throughout. They argued that she was lying about what occurred, even pointing fingers at one of the only other witnesses, Kelsey Harris. The two women were once best friends, but the incident caused a divide.
Alternative theories were presented during the trial, but a jury found Lanez guilty. He was initially scheduled for sentencing in late February, but he reportedly has to wait until April to learn his fate. Check out Megan Thee Stallion enjoying her night out above.
The anticipation was building over the weekend as the Oscars took over, and eyes were on Angela Bassett. Despite having a career that spawned several blockbuster hits, the acclaimed actress has yet to receive an Academy Award honor. Her inclusion in the Black Panther franchise has earned her more praise, and her supporters hoped that this year, she would take home the gold. However, Bassett lost out on Best Supporting Actress to Jamie Lee Curtis for Everybody Everywhere All At Once. The Waiting to Exhale icon’s reaction took over timelines as screenshots of a disappointed look were shared far and wide.
As the internet is in the thick of eating Bassett’s loss, many noted that two actors made sure to pay homage. This would have been Bassett’s first Oscar had she won, and she was clearly ready for her big moment. Creed III stars Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors appeared on the Oscars stage to present the award for Best Cinematography after Bassett’s loss. Their ties with Bassett ran deep, so they took a moment to acknowledge her in front of her Hollywood peers.
Angela Bassett Honored By Jordan & Majors
Before they even looked at the teleprompter, Jordan and Majors focused on Bassett. “Hey, Auntie,” said Jordan, who co-starred in the Black Panther franchise with the actress. Those two words were the same that his character, Erik Killmonger, uttered to Queen Ramonda, portrayed by Bassett. “We love you,” said Majors, who co-starred in Lovecraft Country with Bassett’s husband, Courtney B. Vance. Additionally, both Majors and Bassett graduated from the Yale School of Drama.
Her Best Supporting Actress nominations this year marked the second nod for Angela Bassett. It was 29 years ago that she received her first nomination for What’s Love Got To Do With It, the Tina Turner biopic that has gone down in film history. Yet, Jamie Lee Curtis’s win marked the first in her career. Curtis has been active in the industry for the entirety of her life, but her on-screen debut was in 1978’s Halloween. Both of Curtis’s parents are Hollywood royalty; her father, Tony Curtis, was an Oscar winner with a career thatspanned six decades. Her mother, Janet Leigh, is most remembered as the lead role in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, Psycho.
It’s normal for entertainment outlets to speak with the powers that be that decide on the Academy Award wins, but these Oscar voters irked the internet. Much like publications do during Grammy Award season, Entertainment Weekly spoke with an Oscar voter ahead of the coveted ceremony. He, of course, remains anonymous, thus giving him the veil to speak candidly about his choices. Let’s just say he didn’t hold back.
The man, described as a longtime actor, finally got his wish to become a voting member of The Academy. However, he is disillusioned by the process and doesn’t mince words. “Now, I’m forced to — so, be careful what you wish for. The whole Hollywood back-slapping, ‘get a big stinkin’ load of me,’ it’s not a newsflash, it just seems to get worse and worse. I think the Academy is making an effort to please everybody, and it’s reflective of the state of the world, but I feel like they’re being held hostage — somewhat unfairly — by the wokeness.”
Oscar Voter Disparages Viola Davis
The Oscar voter further speaks on the backlash the Academy received over The Woman King and Till‘s snubs. Fans believed Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler, respectively, deserved to be acknowledged for Best Actress. Neither actor received a nomination, and some believed it was because the Academy is overwhelmingly white. The Oscar voter made it plain that Davis’s performance wasn’t up to par.
“When they get in trouble for not giving Viola Davis an award, it’s like, no, sweetheart, you didn’t deserve it. We voted, and we voted for the five we thought were best,” he further shared. “It’s not fair for you to start suddenly beating a frying pan and say [they’re] ignoring Black people. They’re really not, they’re making an effort. Maybe there was a time ten years ago when they were, but they have, of all the high-profile things, been in the forefront of wanting to be inclusive.”
“Shut Up & Relax”
“Viola Davis and the lady director need to sit down, shut up, and relax. You didn’t get a nomination — a lot of movies don’t get nominations. Viola, you have one or two Oscars, you’re doing fine.” Do you agree with the Oscar voter?
The 2023 Oscars came and went last night. After an eventful year of film in 2022, which may go down as one of the best years in recent memory eventually, the Oscars awards ceremony capped it off with flair.
Naturally, this ceremony was going to be interesting. Given what transpired last year between presenter Chris Rock and Best Actor winner Will Smith, this was certainly a ceremony viewers were tuned in to.
It also featured a few really good battles for awards. There were also plenty of worthy actors and crew members present. Here are a few of the most notable events from the Oscars in 2023.
Everything, Everywhere All At Once continues its historic run at 2023 Oscars
Going into the Oscars, it would have been an absolute surprise to see Everything, Everywhere All At Once not continue to dominate the awards conversation. It had already become the most awarded movie in film history (supplanting The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) before the ceremony even began.
That didn’t change with the latest ceremony. As expected, it won Best Picture, but the most historic award it received was not for the movie itself. Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress for her role as Evelyn and she became the first Asian Best Actress winner in Oscars’ history.
Yeoh was at her peak during the movie, carrying it through the brevity and comedy it mixed so well. She received a lot of help from supporting actors and actresses (the movie had three nominations for those). Still, her performance was more than deserving and now, it’s historic.
“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams — dream big, and dreams do come true.”

Ke Huy Quan’s heartwarming acceptance
The simple fact that Ke Huy Quan was even nominated at all was a triumph that made him emotional. He hasn’t had the strongest career since he was seen on-screen with Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, but he’s back now.
He gave an emotional shoutout to his mother, but it was a delight for viewers to see him win. Perhaps Hollywood made a mistake not casting him in everything before Everything, Everywhere All At Once.
Jamie Lee Curtis’ surprising win
Jamie Lee Curtis was up against some powerful performances in the Best Supporting Actress category, including her EEAAO counterpart, Stephanie Hsu. Still, she defeated the likes of Kerry Condon (Banshees of Inisherin) and Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) to take home her first-ever Oscar.
It might not have been the most deserving award. However, the sheer joy and emotion she felt over finally being awarded after a career that spanned over 45 years made it one of the best 2023 Oscars moments of the night.
Brendan Fraser’s comeback is complete
After a run as a heartthrob actor in the 1990’s, Brendan Fraser was effectively ousted from Hollywood. After he was allegedly sexually assaulted by a former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, he was out of a career.
However, the resurgence is on. Fraser anchored Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale and was in the cancelled Batgirl film. He’s also in an upcoming Martin Scorcese film.
His Oscar win, which was well-deserved and emotional for him, completed the comeback. Fraser is officially back and it’s like he never left.
Austin Butler’s performance asElvis in the Baz Luhrmann biopic was unbelievable. Nevertheless, it’s hard to say Fraser’s win didn’t mean more than it might have for Butler.
The Little Mermaid’s strange promotion
The Little Mermaid is Disney’s latest live action remake. It’s a big project for them for many reasons. Still, the fact that Disney-owned ABC aired the debut of the trailer live instead of as a commercial is odd.
There is probably a good reason for this. Perhaps the studio wants to make sure the movie does well and prove that a non-white actress can play Ariel, the mermaid. Perhaps Disney really wants to make sure that this remake doesn’t flop like many others have.
Either way, they clearly want the movie to do well. Nevertheless, a trailer in the middle of the 2023 Oscars is a very strange way to promote it. Everyone’s watching, so why waste the run time with the trailer? Make it a commercial during a break and everyone will still see it.
Having Halle Bailey, the Ariel actress, and Melissa McCarthy go up to present it felt strange, too. This was a rather unprecedented situation. It’s not likely to happen again after this.
The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Jenny showed up at 2023 Oscars
The Banshees of Inisherin, Martin McDonogh’s fourth film, was nominated for quite a bit this year. It unfortunately came up short in most major categories. However, the movie wasn’t to be denied a bit of screen time at the Oscars.
Jenny the donkey was a fan favorite character from the film, which starred Colin Farrell and Brendon Gleeson. Jenny sadly (SPOILERS) passed away in the movie, but the donkey (or at least a stand-in animal) was at the Oscars.
Jimmy Kimmel, the host, joked about it.
“Not only is Jenny an actor, she’s a certified emotional support donkey — or at least that’s what we told the airline to get her on the plane from Ireland.”
Jimmy Kimmel via the New York Times
The 2023 Oscars were full of incredible moments. It might not go down as a ceremony to remember like last year, but it was still a memorable night. That’s even more true for first-time winners like Curtis, Fraser and others.
Hot Girl Summer is obviously on its way because Megan Thee Stallion made her first public appearance of the year on Sunday (March 12) evening. We saw the “Freak Nasty” hitmaker quietly step out for her birthday last month, but for the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, she didn’t hesitate to make her presence felt. She wore a sultry, strapless custom Bach Mai black gown with mesh detailing around the cleavage as well as a flirty mermaid skirt.
Her accessories were minimal and elegant – a silver chain around her neck, a few slashy rings, and beautiful dangling earrings. As always, Thee Stallion’s face card proved to be very valid. Her eyeshadow appeared to be a dusky brown look, and her cheeks were perfectly contoured. As for her lips, the 28-year-old’s pout was camera-ready thanks to a dark shade of liner and a pretty pink glossy top coat.
Megan Thee Stallion Makes a Comeback
What really stole the show, however, was Megan’s hair, which she left natural in a gorgeous afro. Her curls, in conjunction with the flared bottom of her gorgeous dress, make the rap diva’s silhouette look more full and luscious than ever before. Not only did she pose for photos on the red carpet, but inside the event, we also saw an unexpected link-up between Thee Stallion and Canadian comedian Seth Rogen, who took several snapshots together.
The Texas native’s absence online has certainly been felt in recent months. Following Tory Lanez’s guilty verdict in their long-awaited shooting trial, Thee Stallion understandably took some time to process her trauma and heal in wake of finally being validated. Thankfully, she also announced her upcoming return to the stage this month a few days ago, which has since had her fanbase, Thee Hotties, buzzing.
A Houston Hottie Homecoming
On Friday, March 31, the fashionista will be headlining the AT&T Block Party in her hometown. This marks her first time performing in Houston since 2019’s Astroworld Festival, which came shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. Lil Nas X will also be taking to the stage at the event, though his set will occur later in the weekend. Keep scrolling for more photos of Megan Thee Stallion at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, and check out last evening’s full list of winners here.
Pedro Pascal had a big day yesterday (March 12). Aside from the Season 1 finale of The Last Of Us debuting last night, the actor was also a presenter at the Academy Awards, where his sister Javiera Balmaceda (Amazon’s head of Originals, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Chile for Prime Video) was on hand to represent the Oscar-nominated Argentina, 1985. There were a ton of stars on hand for both the actual Oscars ceremony and for the Vanity Fair afterparty, and at the latter, Pascal was momentarily immobilized when he thought he saw Rihanna.
Towards the start of a red-carpet interview with Chicken Shop Date host Amelia Dimoldenberg, as the two exchanged opening pleasantries, Dimoldenberg asked Pascal how he’s doing. As she asked the question, though, Pascal’s demeanor became more serious and distant as he looked off behind Dimoldenberg. After pausing for a few seconds, he asked, “Is that Rihanna?”
(It was not Rihanna he saw from behind, but rather, Saweetie.)
Dimoldenberg quipped that if it was Rihanna, Pascal should abandon the interview and go introduce himself. Pascal responded, “I will literally shove you out of the way.” Dimoldenberg said she’d do the same thing in his shoes and he replied, “If you didn’t do it, I wouldn’t understand.”
Pascal very clearly had Rihanna on the brain all night: In an earlier red-carpet interview at the actual Oscars with Ashley Graham, Pascal spoke about what he was looking forward to that night. He said he was happy to support his sister and to just watch the show before asking, “Is Rihanna performing?”
Rihanna was back on stage Sunday night, performing her Oscar-nominated single “Lift Me Up” at the 95th annual Academy Awards.
Backed by a fan, strings, and supporting vocalists, Rihanna took center stage, dripping in diamonds, and delivered a stellar performance of the single.
“Lift Me Up” was created to honor Chadwick Boseman and was included in the Black Panther 2 film. Danai Gurira, a Black Panther cast member, introduced her, and stated the singer was “royalty in her own right.”
Unfortunately, Rihanna and Tems, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson did not win the Best Original Song award for the night. It went to “Naatu Naatu” by M.M. Keeravaani; Lyric by Chandrabose for the film RRR.
It was supposed to celebrate all tracks acknowledged in the Best Song category, but Lady Gaga will have to miss out. This year’s Oscars are fast approaching and the anticipation is growing. For years, people have complained that the Oscars were losing credibility among younger generations. However, last year’s debacle greatly increased its popularity. It may have been an unfortunate moment for both Will Smith and Chris Rock, but it revigorated interest in the ceremony. Hollywood’s elite will gather together to learn who will be the latest to take home the gold. The musical performances have also been a buzz.
Best Song nominees include Gaga (“Hold My Hand”), Rihanna (“Lift Me Up”); Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava (“Naatu Naatu”); Stephanie Hsu, David Byrne and Son Lux (“This Is a Life”); and Sofia Carson and Diane Warren (“Applause”). All other nominees confirmed their participation, but Variety reported this week that Gaga declined the invitation. Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss also spoke on the revelation.
Lady Gaga Is Busy With The Joker
“We invited all five nominees. We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. Here, we are honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie after a bunch of back and forth.” He further shared, “It didn’t feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we’re used to with her and that she is used to. So, she is not going to perform on the show.”
Gaga is reportedly in the thick of filming the sequel to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker franchise. The hitmaker will star alongside Phoenix as Harley Quinn, and it’s a casting that has caused a stir. Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips recently shared the first sneak peek at Gaga’s role. Additionally, the film is slated to hit theaters in October 2024. It’s rumored that the music icon’s approach to the character will be much different than Margot Robbie’s take. According to reports, the Folie à Deux Harley Quinn storyline will focus on the development of her character’s interest in The Joker. It will emphasize her beginnings as a psychiatrist who spirals into mania. We’ll keep you updated as more information about the feature is shared.
