Fabolous made his studio debut 22 years ago on this day.

The Brooklyn rapper released his freshman album, Ghetto Fabolous on one of the worst days in New York: 9/11.

Despite the tragic day and being met with mixed reviews, the album was a commercial success. The collection peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 charts, moving 143,180 copies.

The album spawned three singles, “Can’t Deny It” featuring the late Nate Dogg, “Young’n (Holla Back)” produced by The Neptunes, and “Trade It All” featuring Jagged Edge.

The album also had production contributions from DJ Clue, Rockwilder, Timbaland, Rick Rock, Just Blaze, DURO, Omen, Rush Da Spyda, Armando Colon, DJ Envy, and Mono.

Billboard reported that Ghetto Fabolous sold over a million copies in 2003, making it certified platinum.

Today In Hip Hop History: Kanye West Dropped His Third LP ‘Graduation’ 16 Years Ago

tumblr e7f716743cceb85ca97a1f583c82bbd7 a8d3e080 1280

On this day in 2007, the “old” Kanye released his third studio album, the last of his scholastically themed albums, which is aptly titled Graduation on the Def Jam/Roc-A-Fella imprint.

With the success of his The College Dropout debut and his sophomore Late Registration, Kanye was already on an unprecedented ascension that popular culture was totally unprepared for. The concurrent releases of 50 Cent’s Curtis album and Graduation also created a unique promotion of both projects. However, with West as the newer, “rookie” artist, he was the favored underdog in the competition between the two. Graduation was the obvious winner in terms of sales, selling almost a half-million copies on its first day on the shelves.

Graduation offered several smash singles that gave Ye’ propelling momentum beyond his musical peers and set him well above the rest. Songs like “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” “Stronger,” and “Good Life” with T-Pain on the help-out made 2007 probably the best year of Kanye’s career. Aside from the fact that Graduation earned Kanye a Grammy and an AMA, this last installation of his tetralogy served as the last piece of happiness before tragedy struck when Ms. Donda West passed away from coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors due to or as a consequence of liposuction and mammoplasty just two months later.

Salute to Yeezy, DJ Premier, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, and everyone involved in the Graduation album. Definitely an important piece of Hip Hop history!

Today in Hip-Hop History: Jay-Z Drops His Landmark ‘The Blueprint’ Album 22 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 09 11 at 9.24.29 AM

On possibly the world’s most tragic day in recent history (9/11), Hip Hop mogul Jay-Z released one of his best LPs, The Blueprint, on his own Roc-A-Fella Records imprint. The fall of the World Trade Center obviously overshadowed the release on that date, however, before the end of 2001, The Blueprint introduced Jay-Z as the head honcho of the game that we see today.

With a full-scale battle brewing between him and Queensbridge legend Nas, Jay utilized this spotlight to showcase his versatility, his ability to make mainstream hits as well as take on an MC or two that think he’s not qualified to sword fight on the mic. Even though it was polled in NYC by Hip-Hop radio station HOT 97 that Nas defeated Jigga on wax 58% to 42%, however, with Hov’s acquisition of the presidential position at Def Jam just a few years later, it sort of ended up being a draw with Nas as one of Jay’s artists.

Some of the memorable tracks from the album’s theme were “The Takeover”, the initial blow threw at Nas, the romanticized “Song Cry”, the sinfully soulful “Heart Of The City” and the epic “Renegade” track featuring Eminem.

Shout out to Jay and the entire staff at Roc-A-Fella for this timeless Hip-Hop classic!

Pras Michel Is Being Sued By Singer Dante Thomas For Financial Deceit

Former Fugees bandmate Pras Michel is facing some more heavy legal troubles in an already long string of previous visits. This time, the reason he is being brought back is over financial deceit from a past collaborator who nabbed plenty of big hits for him. That man is Dante Thomas, a pop singer who rose in popularity in the early 2000s. Both artists teamed up for a pretty big hit in 2001 called “Miss California.”

The track made big waves across the world, with it reaching platinum and gold status in several countries. “Miss California” is also on Thomas’ one and only album release, Fly, which came out in ’01. He believes that Pras is not living up to his end of the bargain, according to AllHipHop. Thomas claims that besides Pras not following their agreement, the rapper is teasing him that he will never get all of the earnings from the song and album too.

Will Pras Be Coughing Up Tons Of Money?

Thomas’ efforts to retain his money are obviously turning up no results. He is seeking at least over $1 million in total punitive, liquidated, and compensatory damages. The evidence that his lawyer, Marye Dean Esq, has might help him over Pras. “Pras [informed Thomas] that he did, in fact, have [Thomas’] money that was paid by Warner to Pras and that he wasn’t going to give it to him. Pras boasted that he had powerful attorneys, ‘the same attorney Micheal Jackson had’ and taunted [Thomas], stating that he wouldn’t be able to recover a dime from him.” With this developing story, more information will come out on the exact amount that Thomas is looking to collect.

What are your initial thoughts on this situation with Pras Michel and Dante Thomas? With all of Pras’ legal issues lately, do you think he will serve time at all? Based on the information, whose side are you on? We want to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest breaking news around Pras Michel and the rest of the music world.

Dame Dash Reflects On JAY-Z & Nas Feud

Dame Dash says that he wasn’t happy when JAY-Z apologized to Nas following their iconic feud. He reflected on the beef during a recent appearance on The CEO Show, while also admitting that he has deep respect for Nas. The conversation began with Dame recalling his response to being name-dropped on Nas’ “Ether.”

“I was in shock but I was happy. I wasn’t hurt,” he said. “I’ma tell you right now what happened. I was hyped that he said my name but also I knew what homie was doing and I thought it was a distraction. I’m like, ‘This is bubblegum shit.’ I go to do a fucking Rocawear campaign in Arizona, with Freeway I think, he was there. I land and this d*mb shit is on the radio and we took an L because he got in this man’s emotions.”

JAY-Z & Nas After Making Amends

From there, Dame admitted that Nas is “one of the cooler ones,” explaining that the way an artist ages is a true sign of who they are as a person. He continued: “But he’s one of the dudes that I consider straight vinyl – pure Hip Hop, unadulterated. I haven’t seen him do nothing corny, so I have a respect for him. And plus, he got at homie. He was the only person I ever seen really rattle him like that. Yo, bro, I couldn’t even talk to this dude, for three weeks I didn’t talk to Jay about any of that shit.”

Dame Dash On JAY-Z & Nas’ Relationship

Dame also put the blame for JAY-Z’s apology on Irv Gotti, whom he’s since fallen out with. “When he apologized and shit, I was like, ‘No!’” he said. “I was hitting him from the thing like, ‘Get off the radio! We looking cr*zy!’ And Irv did that shit. A Queens n***a, he gave him — pause — the banana in the tailpipe. That was a Queens thing — he didn’t even see that. Yo Irv, stay out my business.” Check out Dame Dash’s full comments above.
