Blacc Sam Recalls Churches Refusing To Host Nipsey Hussle’s Funeral

During a recent interview with Big Boy, Blacc Sam opened up about the tragic and untimely passing of his brother, Nipsey Hussle. The West Coast icon was murdered outside of his store in 2019, shaking the hip-hop community and leaving his loved ones devasted. Blacc Sam was no exception and described experiencing a loss of faith following Nipsey’s death.

“[I] just couldn’t understand it. It was like the Twilight Zone after that. Everything I believed in — my faith was shattered,” he explained. “Still can’t understand it, honestly. Just a twilight zone, man. [I] don’t understand. [It] shook my whole belief and whatever I believed in.”

Blacc Sam Recalls Struggling To Find Venue For Nipsey Hussle’s Funeral

Nipsey’s funeral was held at the Crypto.com Arena, formerly the Staples Center, in April of that year. According to Blacc Sam, however, finding a venue for the funeral was no easy feat at first. “Honestly, it was God,” he said. “You know, it was Hussle and God because we were just going through it… Obviously, we gotta get this funeral handled the right way, we were trying to hit churches and you know, Black churches, Black preachers. Nope, nope, nope. So, we couldn’t find a venue.”

Eventually, Nipsey’s friend and business partner Karen Civil stepped in and was able to secure the Crypto.com Arena with the help of LeBron James and Roc Nation. “After weeks and weeks of we can’t get a venue … we got the Staples for bro. And so, at that point, it was like, alright man, we gotta make sure we do this the right way for bro,” he added. It’s a pretty reductive way of looking at artistry and collaboration, especially in today’s hip-hop climate that has some really salient examples of both extreme outcomes, but is mostly filled with friendly or distant competition on smaller scales. But a lot of times, these corny rap fans are right on the money with their thirst for beef… Did they get it right this time around? Well, Benny The Butcher himself finally has an answer on his new album, Summertime Butch.

For those unaware, there’s been some fan rumblings for some time now that J. Cole sneak dissed Benny on their “Johnny P’s Caddy” collab off the Black Soprano Family boss’ 2022 album, Tana Talk 4. Even some media figures like Math Hoffa speculated on this idea, taking incredibly competitive and flag-planting verses from each lyricist to their logical extremes. It’s similar to the conversation that once dominated Kendrick Lamar’s feature on Big Sean’s “Control,” as less knowledgeable fans (and rappers…) misrepresented K.Dot’s competitive invitation as outright disrespect. Her divorce from Offset still has many fans scratching their heads as to what exactly happened, especially after the former Migo’s social media rant on the matter.

Not only is this a sad reminder that Drizzy and Rozay aren’t cool anymore, but it also contributes to the ongoing saga of LeBron James’ alleged beef with the 6ix God, or perhaps vice versa. For those unaware, a lot of folks are interpreting Drake’s social media activity, as well as that of other OVO members like Chubbs, as sending shade LeBron’s way. Of course, that’s just on his behalf, as we didn’t really get any sort of affirmation from the Toronto superstar at press time: only mixed signals, interesting omissions, or possible shady responses. But folks might be wondering as to why this is even happening. Well, the most reasonable fan theory is that LeBron’s attendance at Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out” concert, as well as his overall support of both K.Dot and The Boy during their rap battle and clips of him dancing to “Not Like Us” and rapping along to Kendrick’s diss tracks, rubbed Aubrey Graham the wrong way.

Regardless of whether LeBron James and Drake are actually beefing, people obsessively connected this to the Kendrick Lamar situation and set up the damage already. Whether or not you think there’s something going on or not, it’s clear that everyone involved is in a pretty tight spot when it comes to optics.
