Today in Hip-Hop History: Nas Dropped His Sophomore Album ‘It Was Written’ 28 Years Ago

On July 2, 1996, Nas unleashed the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut, 1994’s Illmatic entitled It Was Written, the album featured production from DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, and Havoc.

This time around, the fresh-faced, 22-year-old Brooklyn-born emcee consciously pushed the album in a more mainstream direction, hoping to secure a wider fan base. It worked.

The album proved to be Nas’ most commercially successful release, debuting at #1 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It’s viewed by music critics as one of Nas’ strongest records and remains his best-selling release, with over four million copies sold in the U.S. alone.

One of the album’s standout singles, “If I Ruled the World,” featured Lauryn Hill, who (at the time) was riding the wave of her recent success with The Fugees. Other guests included Foxy Brown, Dr. Dre, and Mobb Deep.

Rick Ross And Drake’s Beef Spills Over Onto Instagram After A Comment From Ross’ Ex

While Drake’s beef with Kendrick Lamar appears to have largely died down, his feud of Rick Ross has been picking up steam. Days ago, Ross got punched by some apparent Drake supporters in Canada, and now the rappers are trading blows on social media.

As HotNewHipHop notes, Drake shared a photo of himself on Instagram yesterday (July 1), sitting outside wearing a sleeveless Toronto Raptors shirt. Tia Kemp, Ross’ ex and the mother of one of his children, commented, “Drakeeeeee,” along with a starry-eyed emoji. Drake responded, “my goat.”

Ross didn’t take this lying down: He tagged Drake in a comment of his own and wrote, “pedo vs. granny.”

Earlier this month, Ross celebrated the fact that he had paid his last child support payment. Kemp didn’t like that, as she responded (as Complex notes), “Listen here, b*tch — every day I’m f*cking hustlin’. I heard you was over there talking about you the best Father’s Day gift you could have got was you sending your last child support pay payment or something. You stupid, silly motherf*cker. Who the f*ck give a f*ck about your child support payments, b*tch? And if I want some more, I’ll take my ass over to family court and get some while he going to college.”

Usher Finally Speaks On Controversial BET Awards Tribute

Usher had a massive day at the 2024 BET Awards over the weekend (Sunady, June 30), taking the stage to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award. However, everything surrounding him at the ceremony faced some scrutiny, including audio issues during his speech and the performance tribute to him. Folks thought that the female-led and near-17-minute-long homage from Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Chlöe, Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monét, and Latto could’ve included other male singers, while others thought that it accurately represented the Atlanta-based superstar’s influence and the state of R&B today.

Regardless of any backlash, Usher sent some very appreciative social media messages to his fans, to BET, and to his tribute’s performers, so it looks like he’s just grateful for the ride. “Reflecting on the incredible evening and mannn let me just say how grateful I am to @bet @betawards for the lifetime achievement award [prayer hands emoji],” he posted to his Instagram Story recently. “But I want to take a moment and give a very, very special thank U to these tremendously talented entertainers that graced the stage during my tribute. y’all did the DAMN thing!!! It was so amazing to witness each of your talents through the eyes of my own journey… thank U [heart emoji].”

“My tribute was amazing mannn…” Usher also added via Twitter about the BET Awards performance. “thank U to each and every one involved in the making of this moment [prayer hands emoji].” Meanwhile, here’s what BET had to say to him as an apology for his speech’s audio issues. “Celebrating global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and having him accept his award with a heartfelt speech was an honor,” a spokesperson relayed. “Due to an audio malfunction during the live telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted. We extend our sincere apologies to Usher as we couldn’t be more grateful for his participation in culture’s biggest night. Fans can catch his full uninterrupted speech across BET platforms and tonight’s encore on BET.”

We’ve got to be willing to forgive,” Usher said during the acceptance speech. “We’ve got to be willing to be open. I’m telling you, you’re standing before a man who had to forgive a man who never showed up, ever. And look what I made with it. Look what I was able to ‘usher’ in. But that’s what’s real. That’s what makes us human. That’s what makes us women and men.”

Fans Troll Rick Ross With Old Lyrics After Getting Stomped In Fight With Drake’s “Crew”

People across the internet are letting Rick Ross hear it after a vicious fight with alleged Drake fans. It is quite the bad look, as him and his crew were getting taken out left and right. One member of his entourage was repeatedly kicked and punched into the ground. Another got knocked out cold, and Ross even ate a nasty jab to the face during all of it as well. Drake seemingly appreciated what his fellow Canadians did for him, as he liked a post recapping the night’s event. 50 Cent piled on as well, writing on Instagram, “LMAO 🤣 THE GREAT ESCAPE! MEEKA CALL ☎ THE CHASERS, THEY ARE CHASING ME. 😆 LOL”.

Even his ex Tia Kemp was having lots of fun with it, showing absolutely no remorse. “They f***in’ his fat a** up. I’m glad they smacked the s*** out yo big a**”. However, Rick Ross is doing his best to downplay all of this. “I thought they were bottle service boys ha! Vancouver was fun, til next time”, the MMG label head said via an IG Story. However, his attempt to look tough after the fight is not working because fans are now getting in on the action.

Rick Ross made a feeble attempt to write a substantial diss track while Drake was trading records with Kendrick Lamar. The Mississippi native put out “Champagne Moments” earlier on in the feud and it did not perform well. Additionally, the lyrics and jabs taken were also not that strong and now the track and Ross are getting clowned again. After not doing much during the fight in Vancouver (besides getting socked), fans are trolling him with this bar, “Like his moves, but he never had a fight in school / Always ran“. Even though Ross has done his best to embarrass Drake at every turn, it seems he is the one with egg on his face.

What are your thoughts on fans digging up this lyric from “Champagne Moments” by Rick Ross after the fight? Does this make him look even worse afterwards, why or why not? Does this confirm Drake’s first win in the entire beef? Will Rick Ross recover from this quickly? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Rick Ross and Drake. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

Cardi B Clarifies She’ll “Never Turn Republican” Despite Not Supporting Joe Biden

Cardi B has told fans not to worry over her political affiliation and that despite not supporting President Joe Biden, she’ll never vote for a Republican. The topic arose on social media when one fan online wrote of Cardi: “She may have betrayed our country and turned Republican but at least she found a nice tune.” She fired back in the replies: “I will never turn Republican lol.”

Cardi began distancing herself from Biden before his recent disappointing performance against Donald Trump in the first presidential debate. Speaking with Rolling Stone back in May, she explained that she doesn’t like either of the main candidates in this year’s election.

“It’s just like, damn, y’all not caring about nobody. Then, it really gets me upset that there is solutions to it. There is a solution. I know there’s a solution because you’re spending billions of dollars on any f*cking thing,” she said. “[America] don’t pay for endless wars for countries that have been going through sh*t for a very long time. There’s countries [where] kids are getting killed every single day, but because the [US] won’t benefit from that country, they won’t help. I don’t like that America has this superhero cape on. We never did things to be superheroes. We did things for our own convenience.” Check out her latest comments on politics below.

Cardi B Speaks On Her Political Stance

Cardi made the recent clarification after sharing a snippet of new music on social media. She’s still working on her highly anticipated sophomore album, which is expected to drop at some point this year. It will follow her iconic 2018 album, Invasion of Privacy. Be on the lookout for further updates on Cardi B on HotNewHipHop.

If you’re not clear where Cardi B stands politically, let her be the first to tell you that she will “never” become a Republican.

In response to a clip of Cardi previewing a new song, an X (formerly Twitter) user wrote yesterday (July 1), “she may have betrayed our country and turned Republican but at least she found a nice tune.” Cardi replied, “I will never turn republican lol.”

The user’s comment was presumably referencing Cardi recently distancing herself from Joe Biden. In a Rolling Stone feature shared in May, Cardi confirmed she doesn’t intend to vote in the upcoming election, saying of Biden and Donald Trump, “I don’t f*ck with both of y’all n****s.”

Cardi also said, “It’s just like, damn, y’all not caring about nobody. Then, it really gets me upset that there is solutions to it. There is a solution. I know there’s a solution because you’re spending billions of dollars on any f*cking thing.” She added later, “[America] don’t pay for endless wars for countries that have been going through sh*t for a very long time. There’s countries [where] kids are getting killed every single day, but because the [US] won’t benefit from that country, they won’t help. I don’t like that America has this superhero cape on.
