Wiz Khalifa Surprise Drops 13-Song Mixtape “Wiz Owens”

Wiz Khalifa is one of hip-hop’s most beloved artists for a reason. His chill, no-drama persona is a breath of fresh air in an industry that tends to be dominated by the “divas”, so to speak. However, the Minot, North Dakota-bred MC has built a career on being easy-going both online and in his music. His brand of weed-smoking raps is arguably the best in the biz, as his overall streaming numbers prove that. He may not be at the peak of his powers anymore, but he has more than enough fans coming back for more. It’s why Wiz still continues to drop at multiple times throughout each year. 2023 was one of those stretches, as he put out four. Now, Wiz Khalifa is getting back on the saddle, releasing his Wiz Owens mixtape just hours ago.

Overall, this was a fairly unannounced LP, outside of a tracklist reveal two mornings ago. According to Uproxx, this all a part of a mini two-offering run, with this being phase one. However, it was not originally set up this way. Wiz was going to drop the album (now phase two) first. But those pesky sample clearances slowed things up and its why Wiz Owens is here in front of us. “Clearing the samples still so this is for in the mean time”, Khalifa said in a reply via X to a fan’s unhappiness with album not being out. This mixtape is 13 songs and contains features from Sosamann, 24hrs, and Young Deji.

GloRilla Hits The Gym With Moneybagg Yo In New Video “All Dere”

unnamed 34

Today, GRAMMY-nominated artist GloRilla released her new video, “All Dere,” featuring her CMG labelmate MoneyBagg Yo. Continuing her streak of party-starter anthems, Glo enlists MoneyBagg to be her gym partner and help the ladies get their bodies right. Whether it’s Glo transforming into a cycling instructor or MoneyBagg becoming a personal trainer, the CMG stars look to help these women maximize their results in the gym before the end of summer.

Glo’s success this year comes from her 12-track project Ehhthang Ehhthang, which boasts big-name features, ranging from her Song of the Summer collaboration with Megan The Stallion on “Wanna Be” to her team-up with MoneyBagg Yo on “All Dere.” “Wanna Be” later earned the remix treatment when Cardi B was featured on the song, propelling the track back into the top 15 of the Hot 100 upon its release.

Ehhthang Ehhthang also includes her top 30 Billboard Hot 100 song “Yeah Glo!” After 23 weeks, the song remains a strong player on the charts, currently sitting at No. 50 this week. Her latest triumph came when she unleashed her Rihanna-cosigned track “TGIF,” which first became a viral hit when she teased the song when opening for Megan Thee Stallion on her sold-out Hot Girl Summer Tour earlier this summer.

Earlier this month, Glo was a presenter at the ESPYs alongside NBA star Draymond Green, where they awarded college phenom Juju Watkins with the Best Breakthrough Athlete award.

NYC Mayor Adams Blocks Ban On Solitary Confinement One Day Before Law Took Effect

Screenshot 2024 07 30 at 4.01.56 PM

NYC Mayor Eric Adams has been receiving backlash from community advocates after he blocked a ban on solitary confinement, blocking the city council’s bill over the weekend just one day before the ban was scheduled to take effect.

Community advocate Jumaani Williams criticized the Mayor’s “11th hour” decision to block the bill, saying, “King Adams trying to show what he can do in his kingdom. You are not above the laws, Mr. Mayor. Please stop abusing your power.”

Adams issued a State of Emergency just one day before the law for the ban would take effect, which was the same ban he vetoed, but was blocked by the City Council. “All we ask for is time for the judge to analyze these parts of the bill that the monitor stated is dangerous and can bring harm”, said Adams. The Mayor alleges that the staff and other resources necessary to carry out this type of ban just isn’t available.

The ban, also known as “Local Law 42”, was passed unanimously by the City Council last year.

It limits isolation to four hours per day, that inmate in confinement must be monitored ever y15 minutes and details reports have to be presented as to why the prisoner is placed in solitary confinement on a case to case basis. It also limits the use of handcuffs and leg restraints when an inmate is being transported.

A federal monitor overseeing reforms at Riker’s Island, NYC’s central jail system and the largest jail facility on the planet, wrote in a report that “the city’s correctional department is too dysfunctional to implement solitary confinement limits.”

Adams claims that he was negotiating with the City Council’s legal team in an attempt to scale back parts of the bill, but says that the negotiation was unsuccessful.

“I’m not going to put these inmates or my employees at Riker’s Island in danger,” said the Mayor.

This month, the City Council passed a resolution that would allow the Speaker of the Council to bring legal action against the Adams Administration in order to make sure this ban goes into effect.

Fousheé Announces Her Second Album, ‘Pointy Heights,’ With The Languid Single, ‘Still Around’

New Jersey native Fousheé — a former Uproxx cover star — made a splash in 2020 when her song “Deep End” was used in a song by Brooklyn drill standout Sleepy Hallow. She released her debut album, Softcore, in November 2022, showcasing a broad-ranging list of influences that encompassed everything from SoundCloud rap to pop-punk. On September 13th, she will follow up with her second album, Pointy Heights, taking inspiration from the reggae she grew up on courtesy of her Jamaican mother. Today, she gave fans an early glimpse of her new direction with “Still Around,” a languid single driven by a rambunctious bassline.

The last time Uproxx spoke with Fousheé, ahead of the release of Softcore, she said of her creative process, “I don’t want to do what anyone expects. I like to keep people guessing.” Anyone who expected her to continue releasing her unique brand of alt-R&B will definitely be caught off-guard by her latest musical shift.

She’s certainly been showing off a wide array of musical directions since her debut, teaming up with a diverse assortment of collaborations that includes R&B star Steve Lacy, experimental rapper Lil Uzi Vert, and multifaceted creative Childish Gambino.

Pointy Heights is due on 9/13 via RCA Records. You can find more info here.

Kevin Abstract Is Getting Mixed Signals On “BIG DOG”

Brockhampton alum Kevin Abstract is preparing to release glue, his second album since his former group split up in 2022. “BIG DOG” is glue‘s second single, coming after the Lil Nas X-assisted “Tennessee” in May. The latest song features Kevin Abstract getting back into his element as a rapper. “Tennessee” and Blanket, his previous album, were detours into more pop-sounding music. The song finds Abstract in a contemplative mood, rapping about a partner and their significance in each other’s lives. Abstract wonders if who he’s rapping about thinks about him as much as Abstract thinks about them. In the second verse, Abstract pledges to never put their relationship details out there. Whether through venting to strangers or other ways. The beat is piano-heavy before giving way to a bouncier instrumental. Romil Hemnani, Brockhampton’s former main producer, handles the production on this track with rising rapper/singer Quadeca, Popstar Benny, Mino, and Abstract himself. Additionally, “BIG DOG” features uncredited vocals from Quadeca.

Kevin Abstract has not set a release date for glue. However, fans expect it to release before the end of 2024. The album reportedly features an appearance from Ameer Vann. Brockhampton fans will remember Vann as the rapper who got kicked out of the group in 2018, shortly before the most successful period of the group’s run. Abstract kicked Vann out of Brockhampton for sexual misconduct allegations. Vann also reportedly orchestrated the robbery of former bandmate Dom McLennon’s friend. Earlier this year, Abstract posted Vann’s music on Instagram, suggesting that the two mended their relationship. The aforementioned “Tennessee” with Lil Nas X is glue’s lead single. Based on these singles, glue will attempt to strike a balance between pop-rap and hip-hop that leans more towards the traditional sounds of the genre. Hopefully, it comes sooner than later.

Kevin Abstract – “BIG DOG”

Quotable Lyrics:

Shadowboxin’ with the wrong n****s
Shadowboxin’ silhouette, rain water got me drippin’ wet
Rubberhead, thou wrapped in a rubber band
Sweat on his neck, spend a day at the beach
I fight the waves for you, you gon’ be safe with me
Let me get that sand out your hair, go get something to eat
Let me get that sand out your hair, yeah, yeah

Young Thug Trial: New Judge Denies His Latest Attempt At Bond

Young Thug’s latest motion to get bond has been denied by the YSL RICO trial’s new judge, Paige Reese Whitaker. His attorneys outlined the reasons he should have the opportunity in a motion they presented, last week. Responding to the motion, Whitaker said in court: “I am not going to reconsider any bond issues that have already been ruled on absent legitimate changed circumstances,” as caught by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In response, Thug’s lawyer, Brian Steele, claimed that the conditions the rapper is facing behind bars warrant his bond. “Those are not the kinds of changed circumstances that speak to the Ayala factors. So I’m not going to reconsider the bond,” Whitaker argued back. In the original motion, Thug’s legal team put forth several arguments as to why he should get out on bond. They included the fact that he’s not a flight risk and is also innocent until proven guilty.

Young Thug’s Attorney’s Arrive At Fulton County Courthouse

Brian Steel, attorney for rapper Young Thug, right, arrives at the Fulton. County Courthouse on November 27, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia. Opening statements will begin in the case against 31-year-old US rapper Young. Thug and 28 others, who are facing a racketeering indictment accusing the defendants of a number of offenses that support an overarching conspiracy charge, including murder, assault, carjacking, drug dealing, and theft. (Photo by Christian MONTERROSA / AFP) (Photo by CHRISTIAN MONTERROSA/AFP via Getty Images)

“In the Great State of Georgia, unlike other States, for purposes of pretrial bond analysis, the presumption of innocence remains with the person accused of an offense, even a capital offense, from arrest and even during trial…” the motion read. “That means, prior to and during trial, Courts view the criminally accused to be innocent of the charges waged against him/her. It has been written that the most fundamental premise of our criminal justice system is that the criminally accused cannot be punished for an offense until the prosecution proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt… Thus, the granting of a reasonable pretrial bond must be preserved. Otherwise, the presumption of innocence, secured only after centuries of struggle, would lose its meaning.”

Whitaker took over the case after the recusal of Judge Ural Glanville last month. Be on the lookout for further updates on Young Thug on HotNewHipHop.

Cardi B Asserts That Others Are Using Her As A “Marketing Plan” And Fans Don’t Want To Hear It

It’s no secret that Cardi B is taking her sweet time getting her sophomore album out on the open market. 2018 was the year she put out her GRAMMY-winning debut LP, Invasion of Privacy. Since that run in the late 2010s decade, the New York rapper has been going fairly strong thanks to a couple of big singles such as “WAP”, “Up”, as well as several features. With all of this time in between full-length projects, her Barti Gang has been waiting around for the drought to come to an end. You could argue that her staunchest critics want to see the hitmaker do the same, but perhaps for a different reason.

It’s clear it has to do with the fact that she is making headlines because of her constant rants on the industry, politics, and her personal life. Additionally, the haters are fed up with Cardi B’s victim/overly defensive mentality when it comes to receiving any negativity. A lot of people are feeling this way after asserting that her contemporaries are using her as a “marketing plan”. It’s not really clear what caused her to lash out, but, according to The Jasmine Brand, it might have something to do with listeners labeling her recent Rob49 collab a bust.

Regardless, she is done being quiet. “If somebody not bothering or me throwing shots clearly I’m not talkin about them… I was having a very fun July.. I don’t sub btches or bother them.. yall p***y was tickling when these h*es used me as a marketing plan but I gotta stay humble huh?”. This left a multitude of fans groaning over her continuous complaining. “Ah, the sympathy and payola has now ran its course. 🍅🍅🍅 girl, log TF outta ya diary, (twitter) and get in a booth. 😌😤 this lady got every excuse why she still hasn’t dropped her sophomore album yet. Lol”. Out of all of the comments, this one accurately describes a lot of people’s feelings toward Ms. Cardi B.

What are your thoughts on Cardi B claiming people are using her as a “marketing plan”? Do you think this is a valid take, why or why not? Who do you think she is referring to? C Stunna Drops “Still Stuntin” Gangsta Grillz Mixtape With DJ Drama

Florida’s C Stunna is coming through this summer with his latest work. On July 26, the rising star released his highly anticipated Gangsta Grillz mixtape, Still Stuntin. The tape is his first of 2024, and his first since 2021’s Stone Cold Stunna. The legendary hip-hop tastemaker and creator of the Gangsta Grillz series DJ Drama hosts the tape. This is the latest in Drama’s Gangsta Grillz revival, which began when Tyler, The Creator enlisted him for the Grammy-winning Call Me If You Get Lost in 2021. Still Stuntin places heavy emphasis on C Stunna’s flexing, as well as his ability to provide high-energy, heavy-hitting tracks, a trademark of Florida hip-hop.

The tape features the buzzing single “Curtis Jackson” with Philadelphia rapper Skrilla. The video for that song has over 2.2 million views on YouTube since C Stunna released the song in April. “Lose Control” features Real Boston Richey. The two of them rap over a bass-heavy beat in line with the current sound coming from C Stunna’s home state. It is not surprising that they brought the energy, as it’s what they do best. “No Pad or Pen” features a verse from a fellow rising star, former XXL Freshman Luh Tyler. He is on the road to releasing his own project in August. Still Stuntin is a confirmation of C Stunna’s rise through the ranks over the last few years. Above all, the mixtape is a celebration of the effort he’s put into building his career, effort rewarded in part by receiving a DJ Drama co-sign.

Aminé Joins The Brat Movement With ‘360.5,’ A Remix Of Charli XCX’s ‘360’

Brat Summer continues. Charli XCX’s new album Brat has been the moment and the movement for summer 2024, and it’s so popular that seemingly everyone is hopping on the wave.

That includes Portland rapper Aminé, who cheekily remixed Charli’s Brat single “360” as “360.5,” winking toward his own mixtape history. You may remember that between albums, he released a pair of tapes, ONEPOINTFIVE and TWOPOINTFIVE to work out new directions for his music between Good For You, Limbo, and Kaytraminé.

Contrary to what the “.5” in the title may suggest, though, Aminé doesn’t half-ass this release, pairing it with a simple but smooth video shot during a recent trip to Italian island, Ischia. Hanging out on a balcony overlooking the water, Aminé raps directly into the camera, while Y2K-style Photoshop edits and emojis illustrate his punchlines.

Next up for Aminé is his inaugural The Best Day Ever festival, which BADBADNOTGOOD, Karrahbooo, Kaytrandada, Rayvyn Lenae, Toro Y Moi, and more. Meanwhile, Charli has seen her new album and its accompanying slang adopted by none other than presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, even as Charli herself has expressed an interest in “flex[ing] my creative muscles on other areas.” We can’t wait to find out what those might be, but for the foreseeable future, the Brat era is in full effect.

Watch Aminé’s video for “360.5” above.
